Flash flood threat builds across Colorado

AccuWeather's Tony Laubach reported live from Colorado as severe storms returned to the region on July 30.

00:00Flood watches are in effect today across parts of Colorado's front range.

00:03Heavy rain will trigger flash flooding along parts of the I-25 corridor.

00:07Back here with a meteorologist, Tony Laubach, joins us now from Colorado Springs

00:11with more on what to expect in the days ahead, Tony.

00:16Yeah, Damian, well, you're looking at rush hour here in Colorado Springs,

00:21and we are currently active on a couple of flash flood warnings for the springs

00:25from storms that came through here a little bit ago.

00:27We saw some very heavy rain that moved in.

00:29You see the traffic here kind of slow.

00:31We're at the kind of beginning, middle parts of rush hour,

00:34but some standing water on the roads and places here along I-25.

00:38We'll show you some of the video here.

00:39Fortunately, the storms had some wheels to them,

00:42so we were not seeing the torrential rain really hang around in a lot of areas,

00:46but flash flooding, minor flash flooding reported in areas like Manitou Springs,

00:50the western side of Colorado Springs, some of what you're seeing here.

00:53Again, nothing too significant out of that round of storms.

00:56They were briefly severe, particularly north of Colorado Springs,

00:59where we had some small hail up in the Monument, Palmer Lake areas.

01:03In addition to that, further to the southwest, down near West Cliff,

01:07we actually had a confirmed tornado out of an isolated cell there,

01:11so that would put that just to the west of Pueblo.

01:13So an active day kind of along these areas.

01:16Flash flood warnings, several of them in effect,

01:18from about Monument down to Colorado Springs.

01:20Those going between 5.30 and 6.30 mountain time.

01:25Those warnings remain in effect as the storms have pushed through

01:28and will continue to push on through to the east.

01:30But again, it has certainly made a rush hour already off to a slow start,

01:34thanks to some of the standing water on many of the area roads here in Colorado Springs.

01:38Could be looking at multiple rounds of these showers and storms,

01:42particularly from Colorado Springs and points south.

01:44And we're also seeing some envelopment in the foothills just off to the west of Denver,

01:48so we could be looking at some strong storms that will work through those areas later this evening

01:54and probably kind of resetting and doing it again as we get into the day tomorrow.

01:58Again, right now the main issue is the flash flood warnings for the Colorado Springs area.

02:02Again, those going until about 6.15, 6.30 for Colorado Springs proper.

02:07Get a little further north up to Monument and Palmer Lake.

02:10Most of the rain is cleared out of that area.

02:12That flash flood warning issued with that storm as well.

02:14And again, that confirmed tornado, guys, down near West Cliff,

02:18kind of the surprise of the day, down in the mountains a little bit.

02:20So severe weather, certainly the secondary headline behind the flooding rains,

02:25and unfortunately will be a concern for us here as we go through tomorrow as well.
