00:00This is a job interview from hell.
00:05First prize, you get to work for me.
00:08Second prize, don't exist.
00:10From across the country,
00:1215 of Britain's brightest business prospects have come to London.
00:16Pressure. That's what business is all about.
00:19Pressure. Are you tough enough to put up with it?
00:22They're here to compete for a job with a six-figure salary,
00:26working for Britain's most belligerent boss.
00:29You ever open your mouth like that again
00:31and don't even bother to come back in this ballroom?
00:34Do you understand me?
00:36Famously hard to please,
00:38Sir Alan Sugar controls a vast business empire.
00:42Once again, he's on the hunt for an apprentice.
00:46To come in with a loss is inconceivable.
00:49You'd better say some more because, I tell you what,
00:52you're halfway out the bloody door.
00:54To land their dream job...
00:56No, that's not OK. That is not OK.
00:58...the candidates need to work as teams.
01:00You either want my constructive criticism or you don't.
01:03No, it's your body language, Kim. It's not helping.
01:05...but shine as individuals.
01:07Dance in your pants, dance in your pants.
01:10I think that's verging on being silly now.
01:13Because in the end, there's only one job.
01:16You're fired. You're fired.
01:17You're fired.
01:18A total mess.
01:19You're fired.
01:28Previously on The Apprentice...
01:30Oh!
01:32...the task, find the true value of ten items...
01:35Oh, wow, it's a toilet chair.
01:37It's a bog.
01:38I think some might be red herring.
01:40Yeah.
01:41...then sell them for the highest price.
01:43It's very important that we know the fair value of everything.
01:46Team leader Ben started strongly.
01:48Oh, £100. Thank you very much.
01:51Brilliant.
01:52Brilliant.
01:53But quickly lost his nerve.
01:55Will any of you take them off me for a pound?
01:57All the shoes.
01:59On the other team, project manager Philip continued his feud with Lorraine.
02:04I don't know, something told me about that rug.
02:06Ah, right, that's funny though.
02:08I did actually say it very early on this morning.
02:11His decision to ignore her cost the team dear.
02:15I've got great instinct.
02:16I want to know why you didn't take any notice of it.
02:19Because, yep, maybe I thought I knew better.
02:21But they still managed to squeak to victory.
02:24I don't know what you're smiling for.
02:25A loss is a loss, yeah?
02:27On the losing team, Deborah came under fire.
02:30I cannot put up with someone with a mouth like yours.
02:35But it was Norrell who ended up in Sir Alan's sights.
02:38I don't know what you've been doing here.
02:41You're fired.
02:42Now nine remain to fight for the chance to become The Apprentice.
02:49Oh!
02:50Oh!
02:51Oh!
02:52It's the phone!
02:53Oh!
02:54Woo!
02:55Hello, this is Sir Alan's office.
02:56Sir Alan would like you to meet him at the London Gateway.
02:58Pack an overnight bag and the cars will be with you in half an hour.
03:00I don't know what I'm doing.
03:01I don't know.
03:02I don't know what I'm doing!
03:03I don't know.
03:04What's the London Gateway?
03:05I don't know.
03:06I don't know.
03:07I'm getting ready to go abroad.
03:08I'm packing my swimming shorts, flip flops and my sunglasses just in case.
03:13We need to pack.
03:14What's the London gateway?
03:15I don't know.
03:16We need to pack.
03:17Getting ready to go abroad.
03:19I'm packing my swimming shorts, my flip flops and my sunglasses just in case.
03:25I think we're going somewhere nice and exotic.
03:27I do hope we're going somewhere hot.
03:29Bikini clad woman.
03:40The London gateway.
03:41What it is, I'm not sure.
03:42Gateway suggests that it's a gate to somewhere.
03:45Do you know what I mean?
03:49Just seeing a big sign for Luton, 26 miles.
03:53We can go to Stansted this way as well.
03:55Yeah.
03:56Oh, here we go, London gateway, look.
03:58London gateway services.
04:03Hmm, a service station.
04:06Good afternoon.
04:07Good afternoon.
04:21Good afternoon.
04:22Good afternoon, Sir Alan.
04:24We are standing here at the start of the M1 motorway, the gateway to the north. And that's where you're going. You're going north.
04:34Well, I've laid on 12 companies for you. Each of them have got products. They'll pitch those products to you and you'll choose two companies to represent. And from then on, you're going to go and sell their products to dealers in the Manchester and Liverpool area.
04:51And let me give you another warning here. Everybody is going to have to do some selling. Everybody is going to be given an order book. I'm not going to listen to, oh, I was doing marketing, Sir Alan. No, you're all doing selling.
05:06The team that comes back with the most amount of orders is going to win and the team that doesn't will lose. And in that team, one of you will get fired. Everything clear?
05:26Yes, Sir Alan.
05:27Good. Now I'm going to change the teams up a little bit. Mona and Howard, come over to Empire.
05:34Ben and Yasmina, come over to Ignite. I'll see you back in the boardroom in a couple of days' time. Off you go.
05:56Manchester and Liverpool. So much for selling olive oil and balsamic vinegar in Italy.
06:04It would be embarrassing guys if we lose this task.
06:08You shouldn't underestimate the competition, but I'm really, really confident in this team's ability.
06:12I'm very strong on sales. I know you're strong on sales. I know that Kate's strong on sales.
06:17I'd buy anything of her.
06:18Yasminas.
06:198.45pm. Manchester City Centre. Before turning in, the teams have to pick project managers.
06:32I really want to project manage and I really think I will be really good at this given the passion that I have.
06:38I'm happy to do it. I really want to do it. You sound like you desperately want to do it.
06:41It's not desperation to correct you James, it's passion.
06:44Yeah, I was just saying you're desperate to want to do it, not your desperate woman.
06:48Yeah, I have a desire. I really do.
06:50I like being in control, simply because I can't see anyone in the team who can do a better job than me.
06:56Or I can't trust anyone else to do a better job than me.
06:59I haven't PM'd yet. I mean, I would definitely put myself forward to PM on this one.
07:04Although as a team, I want to make sure that you guys are happy with that.
07:08Not because I've just, this is the first time I'm PM, but because I'm the right decision.
07:12Lorraine, I will support you in being PM for this task.
07:14Thank you Kate, that's good.
07:15I can assure you I'll support you all the way.
07:17Good man Ben, thank you. Yasminas.
07:19Yeah, bring it on. Let's do it.
07:20Great, thank you Yasminas.
07:21I've come under a lot of criticism for maybe not supporting you enough and not giving you enough opportunities,
07:25so I'd only be too glad to give you one.
07:26Thank you Phillip. So we've agreed, I'm your PM.
07:31Right, the first thing I would say, particularly you Ben because you haven't worked with me,
07:35is that my thinking has to come from an inside gut feeling.
07:41I'm a little bit of a slow burner in terms of my thought process.
07:45I don't necessarily get the idea immediately, but it will come.
07:49And that's kind of, in the last few tasks I have to say that's happened
07:52and unfortunately I haven't driven it through.
07:54But now that I'm PMing, I will be driving my decisions through.
07:58Cool. Yep.
07:5910am .
08:10The Manchester Hilton.
08:12Inside, a dozen up-and-coming British designers, each keen to get their product into the shops.
08:25let me introduce team ignite my name is Lorraine Tyre and I'm the project manager on the on the
08:35team today hi Peter I'm wanna nice to meet you you can give us a few minutes overview of your
08:39product okay my products called drill mate both teams must choose two products they think they
08:45could sell into the shops and department stores of the Northwest tomorrow what makes the lojo
08:50ball unique is the fact that we put the zip on it and when it's open it becomes a seat excellent
08:56for Xbox gaming don't think it's gonna set the world on fire no I don't either you put it against
09:01the wall and you drill through it and all the dust drops down into it I think it's a maybe
09:08for this afternoon to get the team started sir Alan has set up appointments with two major
09:14retailers the product is called Ladalympic a hardware superstore in Liverpool and the Manchester
09:21branch of a high-end home furnishing chain today I'm showing you my coat wrap design it's a coat
09:29wrap yeah it's basically this is my signature piece this is what's got my name out there I
09:34really like it I've got great instinct from that one he mad seriously he's an acquired taste for sure
09:41but I believe that he's an artist all the sort of feelings about it aside we need to think bottom
09:46line business and I don't think that product is going to make as much money hi what I invented is
09:53a thing called the lovers lead okay I've just split up my girlfriend I was taking my dog for a walk I
09:59was wishing she was still with me and I thought so I'll show you exactly what I come up with it's the
10:07lovers lead it's a double-handed dog lead so two people can walk the same dog so we can walk hand
10:16in hand we can walk oh cuddling oh and we can just walk if we're friends for me that product's
10:25embarrassing play can I just ask you a couple questions about the packaging is that how it
10:29sits on the shelf itself so it would hang on the shelf here yep also which I'm very proud of back to
10:35dogs I was endorsed it so ten percent of my earnings go to bats the dogs on thank you so
10:40much thank you cheers nice one guys he's got the whole package there isn't he I think it's going
10:45to be really easy to sell I'll buy into lovers lead are we all agreeing that we're going for lovers
10:50lead yes while the lovers lead is grabbed by mona's team hi guys another pet product catches the eye of
10:59Lorraine's this is the cat playhouse we came up with the idea mainly because cats love cardboard boxes
11:08do cats genuinely yeah and we get people ordering it going can you address it to tiggles another market
11:15is the ferret market we'll recommend it retails 15 yeah we say it to retailers at 650 massive mark up
11:23there as well it's good very very good morning I prefer the cat playhouse to the lovers lead I
11:28think we've got more chance of selling it in terms of mass orders the margins are better on the cup
11:32there because we're cold calling tomorrow guys let's make no mistake about that today is set up but
11:36tomorrow we're cold calling hi everyone hi hello next up an expandable bag to carry shopping on a bike
11:44you can actually take really large carrier bags called the pot hook them over these and then all
11:50you do is you shut the lid and off you go I think that's brilliant does it affect the weight so if
11:58you've got all the weight of your shopping on one side does it not pull the bike down on one side no
12:01well we've done lots of tests and we haven't had any problems we'll shift them out the door for you
12:04no problem tomorrow brilliant thank you good luck guys the product I want to show you is called the
12:10lippy silk bag it's a sleeping bag with arms and legs Wow on the other team Mona takes a closer look
12:17at the final offering I have to try it a sleeping bag suit really ideal for summer camping like music
12:25festivals or even lounging about at home oh you look so comfy absolutely fantastic is it really warm it is
12:34really really warm that's definitely my favorite are we all agreeing that silk bag is what we want to go
12:39for it yes it's everyone in agreement 100% no doubts about it my only doubt my only doubt is what
12:44we're going to try and sell this afternoon I don't see either of our two retailers this afternoon buying
12:50you're right but who knows what we're going to sell tomorrow there might be more money on the table
12:54tomorrow that's what we don't know right we're going to go for silk bag and lovers lead please okay
13:00sir Alan has arranged two appointments for them this afternoon neither the lovers lead nor the silk bag is
13:06really appropriate for either of those two markets and I'd be surprised if they managed to make
13:10appointments tomorrow with anyone who's got buying power like these two 3 15 p.m. a chance to get first
13:20reactions to their chosen products and possibly notch up sales I think you just have to have confidence in
13:29what you've got to sell yeah completely we'll sell it in such a way they have to buy it yeah first in
13:35Liverpool city centre with 35 years of trading behind it an independently run hardware store
13:41Yasmina is with project manager Lorraine to pitch their bike bag and cardboard cat toy I picked up one
13:52of the slogans as I was walking in got an idea don't be shy share it and we've got to think that
13:58we're going to give you that message by I'm showing you our innovative products that we've got today
14:02this is a pod this is your bicycle pod stands for pop on delivery as I'm sure you're aware with rising
14:11fuel prices and the need to be eco-friendly more and more people in this country are turning to bicycles
14:18as a mode of transport you cycle to the shop you put your shopping in the pod close the pod and away
14:25you go as a cyclist excellent one of the major problems that you will find with that is that
14:31if you don't have the weight evenly distributed you'll have very great difficulty keeping that
14:35bike in a straight line I do agree with you and what we're suggesting is that you might want to buy two
14:39what we have here let me introduce you to our cat playhouse for cats let's underline who it's
14:52actually for first and foremost what quantities would you be looking at us taking from you we
14:58would like to think that you could potentially make an order of five to six thousand you'd expect us to
15:05sell 400 of those a week I believe you would do I believe you're a big enough store to do that
15:10disagree with that thanks a lot bye now bye-bye nice to meet you bye-bye that was the worst
15:19presentation or pitch I've done in 20 years back in Manchester on the other team project manager
15:29Mona along with James is clocking up appointments for tomorrow's sales push I'd really love to come
15:35and show the product to you and see if you'd be interested to place an order from me fantastic I
15:42look forward to seeing you then Jane while she phones Deborah and Howard have been sent to the
15:49hardware store to pitch their sleeping bag and dog lead if you're a couple you're married you can go
15:55and walk your dog together if you're a grandparent and you've got a dog who might be quite boisterous you
16:00can actually use it with your grandchildren as a training aid how to walk the dog generally I only ever
16:07see one person male or female walking the dog now this is a full body sleeping bag it's got individual leg items
16:20and arm items so it's completely different from the traditional mummy shaped sleeping bag the
16:25recommended retailer price on this is 89 pounds okay I'll see it's quite expensive it's 89 pounds and
16:33how much does a sleeping bag actually cost as opposed to your product at 89 pounds actually it's a good
16:40question actually yeah I mean it can vary if you get from bottom end right to the top you're asking us to
16:45take this product and put it on our shelves customers particularly these challenging times
16:50and look at the good value for money but you don't know how much your sleeping bag costs no not sure and
16:56what area of the business would you see us putting that product in do you guys sell tents no we don't do
17:01you have a gift department no from what you've said it doesn't seem to really fit into any of your
17:07product ranges does it now far too expensive all right we'll have a nice evening next appointment
17:14Manchester branch of the designer home store this is something that's different there's nothing like
17:21this out in the market at the moment we also any product if it kind of fits our values our brand values
17:27and my initial reaction would be that this is not something that you would see in a stylish design led
17:34business that it's just not very stylish stylish thank you thank you cheers we chose products that
17:44don't fit our retailers we decided to go for products that will sell tomorrow instead and so we sell
17:50tomorrow we'll sell tomorrow 8 15 p.m. arriving back in Manchester Lorraine and Yasmina try their luck let me
18:07introduce to you the pod okay this forms into a little bag that goes into the side of the back of
18:12your bicycle and inside it you can put your shopping okay as you can see it's a beautiful product it's made
18:19out of high high high polyester so it's completely wearable it looks like a really interesting
18:27product yeah what's the retail price I mean retails at 35 pounds one reason why we think it will really
18:35fit in with heels is obviously the look of the product because it's such a contemporary funky new
18:39modern product both of the products could have a place thank you the teams won't know till the
18:50boardroom if they've won any orders today in Liverpool still trying to get to grips with their products the
18:59rest of Lorraine's team Phil Kate and then we'll power a and be together to make it both shape I will
19:06it's part of the together hell looks like you're damaging the cardboard we could try and sell this
19:17yeah it's all right hello Kate speaking how do you get on with your meetings guys oh the pitches
19:32um well we've tried booking as many as we possibly could basically we've only got one so far okay how
19:42many calls did you guys make today would you say 10 10 15 I reckon probably more like 20 and then
19:50out of 20 calls you got one particular appointment yeah pretty much speak again in the morning oh dear
19:57that's not that many appointments set up no I'm not impressed because I know my own I know myself and
20:01I've done telly sales I think I'd be expected to get a lot more return on that I'm not sure what else we
20:06can do 9 a.m. the shops of the Northwest open up for business the teams have eight hours to add as
20:30many orders as possible to any they may have got yesterday in Manchester Mona and James hit one of
20:39the appointments they secured a camping stool okay no but nice shop thank you very good and right as I
20:47was discussing with you on the phone what we've got is a sleeping bag but with arms and legs on it
20:52all right thank you it comes in six different colors just a bit more freedom than a regular
20:58sleeping bag very good I'd be happy to try a few of them I wouldn't give you a massive order for a map
21:03this moment okay what quantity were you thinking because I have a minimum order what's your minimum
21:08order it's 24 24 pieces yeah if you go from 24 that will be 49 50 let's get the price down a
21:18little bit more can you increase the quantity a bit more the least I can go down to is 48 pounds
21:25that's the rock bottom and how many ever got to have to offer that price I won't say 60 but can we
21:33make you 50 40 and you've got a deal 45 and I shake your hand go on it's not it will it will shift
21:42obviously 45 and I shake your hand 45 at 48 pounds yeah yeah excellent thank you very much
21:48well done that's awesome 10 25 a.m. hello this is Lorraine calling from ignite pet accessories hi
21:59could I speak to the manager today if possible with just one appointment booked Lorraine's team set
22:05about finding some likely buyers she's based herself in Manchester we've got a product called
22:16the cat playhouse and basically told the other half of her team to cover Merseyside hi guys well
22:25Lorraine I've got some really good news for your side yes we just got a meeting for you guys later
22:31on with the biggest pet retailer in the UK fantastic but you're not talking small pet shops here you're
22:39talking super stores well done you guys good luck okay bye whoa result that is it's a shame we're not in
22:49Manchester now you've done the initial groundwork never mind doesn't matter what you know they can
22:54team effort it is a team effort why don't we both deal with this one and both do the pitch I'm going
22:59to decline on that one I'm going to take this one because I think I have got huge experience in
23:03corporate selling and this is a mess with with all due respect I think I'm just as good as you are at
23:07selling I'm not arguing about it I'm not arguing about it right but without listening to me no no I'm
23:12just saying I am leading the pitch as me whether you like it or not I've made that decision and you
23:17have to accept it all right okay Lorraine I'm going to listen to you because you're better at
23:21pitching than me you're better at selling than me and you're better everything than me no because
23:24right now I'm your boss and I've made that decision okay can you give me a reason why you're not going
23:28to let me help you on the pitch I said you can help me but I'm going to lead it do you understand
23:33the difference I'm going to lead the pitch and then you can pip in I think I think I do understand
23:36the difference but I'm just saying you know really patronizing no I'm just saying I'm not your
23:41eight-year-old kid Lorraine no I know I don't but there's no arguing we're wasting time I'm not
23:45arguing with you I've made a decision I'm going to lead the pitch and you can help out and I think
23:48that's fair enough okay let's go okay on the other team Deborah and Howard are already on their way to
23:57the HQ of the very same pet superstore this could win it for us because they've got 220 stores yeah we
24:05wanted to introduce to you it's known as the lovers lead as a product it's aimed at the 17.5
24:12million dogs in the in the country and anyone who owns them I personally and I hope you can I could
24:16see this in all of your stores up and down the UK how many leads we do we sell different types of
24:20leads we sell about 60 different types of leads you would have thought with 60 different types of
24:25leads that we thought of everything and actually you come to the table with something I've never seen
24:29before and and I like it I think it's got something about it but that doesn't mean to see it's going to be
24:35commercially successful so therefore we would want to to trial it I suggest on a regional basis
24:39and perhaps take 50 stores of our chain three or four and per store in the northwest so we'll be
24:45looking at 200 200 leads as a test yeah brilliant thank you thank you very much the city of Chester
24:57Philip Kate and Ben arrive at the one appointment they managed to secure yesterday this is the product
25:04you come to show you to do a cycle superstore snaps to the back basically if you were too heavy
25:10shopping bags yes you put the handles through the hooks okay distribute the weight there and the
25:16slacks taken up by the two stops which are adjustable okay and I can hold the bags in place there there is
25:23one basic problem that springs to mind when I look at it okay but it is going to interfere with you
25:29pedaling the bike we've been assured by the inventor that it's been tested and that it doesn't affect
25:34stability can we try it on one of your bicycles yes we can thank you she's a beauty thank you forget all the
25:49ride a bike it does look really really nice in some of the other colors as well it would just really
25:58stand out not a problem but what I would say David's look I mean we'd really like to give you the
26:08opportunity and the first people to have this product in your store there's no way of confidence
26:11to take a few and commit to us just to give us the general to get the process going and I don't feel
26:16that that is it's sufficiently workable to warrant purchasing and offering for sale in the store I'm
26:24ready to go yes thank you we thought this was the stronger one a dead end but their team leader Lorraine
26:34assisted by Yasmina is heading for her afternoon appointment with the big pet retailer oh my god
26:41if we sold 20,000 of those it's 130,000 pound let's go for 20,000 there's no reason why they shouldn't you
26:51make that introduction okay I'll do the instruction yes over to you yeah all right then let me go let me
26:55introduce you to and then I'll go into one okay perfect lovely all right what I would like to do
27:00ladies is introduce you to the cat playhouse now I know you're just beaming with excitement we've got
27:11the fire engine the helicopter and the tank so it's very focused on boys it would appear well I think
27:19it's fairly unisex at the end of the day whether your cat is a male cat or a female cat they'll still
27:23enjoy playing in it who are you targeting to buy it that's a very good question and one I will answer
27:31basically this product is diverse it is perceived as a gift item but obviously can be bought as a gift to
27:38the cat or kitten also now I suppose that I mean I'm very very direct in terms of my questions and I hope you're
27:47not sort of offended by that but it's I suppose you know what type of orders would you see yourself ordering
27:53um in a first instance I'd probably say about 50 test it okay what would make you give us a larger order at this stage in terms of
28:12I can see no benefit in us tying up cash and stock at this stage John sounds like a fair deal yeah I
28:20think so yeah we're good hi there Ben speaking just to let you know we pitched ourselves absolutely to
28:34the maximum we couldn't have done and a better job have we tried they tried every way possible to get
28:39out of not buying a thing from us and in the end we secured 50 units 50 units yeah
28:46so tell me how are you guys getting on we haven't got any yet
28:53okay right now I just need a sale from you guys because it's going to look pretty poor tomorrow in
28:59the boardroom otherwise yep we're aware of that okay see you soon thanks bye bye there's no urgency on
29:05them at all no what am I supposed to say get your asses out there and get selling maybe you should say
29:09that I set her up with the biggest pet retailer in the UK she's got a bloody pitch today because of us
29:16and she's turning around and saying it's gonna look poor in the boardroom tomorrow look poor in the
29:20boardroom it'll look poor in the boardroom that I set her up with that and all she could do was
29:25sell 50 oh she's mental I'd like to know what's causing distractions on the other team and I just
29:30hope for Kate Phil and Benjamin's sake yeah that it's not Kate's beauty 2 45 p.m. we've got a dog lead
29:42that we're we're here today to sell it's intended to be for like lovers for partners but you could
29:47actually do it with a kid if you want it almost like a training lead you can see you sell dog leads
29:51it's something that would sit nicely on your shelf at the end in Manchester Mona and James continue to
29:57clock up sales the other half of the team Deborah and Howard head for their next appointment I know
30:07that you've just set this one up and you've had to chat with him but I'm nervous that I won't get a
30:14sale today we'll get we will get a sale each of us I'll make sure of it I know but this is the
30:19opportunity for me to do one I just think that because I set this meeting up I want it to go my
30:24figures if he does agree to it I promise you that before the end of the day we will get another deal
30:28and it will if you haven't got one it will go to you but we're working as a team and we want to
30:32make the most money absolutely and that's the key point we're working as a team so you can get you
30:37can call and line up other appointments for this afternoon go for it I'm not stopping you I'm not
30:46going to suddenly give away leads that I've set up with clients to somebody else I can't do that
30:52otherwise there's no point in being in the competition you could do 10 at nine pounds yeah
30:56yeah don't tell you Deborah just needs raining in a little bit it's not how many sales can Debra
31:01make it's how many can the team make there's no point her making all the sales today and me not
31:05making any and short of grabbing the lead and wrapping it around her head to stop her I don't
31:11know what else I can do 4 45 p.m. the last chance to get sales into order books this is an extraordinary
31:27treat for any cat or kitchen getting inside it underneath so they can get out of it so we've
31:32been using this prototype all day it's a cardboard box in the end I've got I throw away tons of
31:37cardboard boxes every week so I've got to say I'm not really that interested come on finally we can't
31:43negotiate no and I'm not trying to negotiate I mean I'm saying that I'm not that bothered thank you very
31:48much the wages are a little bit lower up here it's quite clear to me now a lot of choice the product
32:00choice is completely disastrous yeah their order books empty one last appointment for Ben Philip and
32:07Kate at a top city centre department store so the product we have is the cat playhouse here's one we
32:16made earlier in true blue peter style this is the airplane it's not totally our market not as a gift for a
32:26friend frankly returning to London with no sales is a bit like the three of them popping into that cat
32:46plane and taking off to join the battle of Britain I ain't got a chance what we still didn't sell anything
33:07oh no no no no no 6 p.m. trading is over
33:17today's sales will be added to any orders that come through from yesterday
33:27now it's back to London Sir Alan and the boardroom
33:36department store yeah I've got a really really good feeling about it in what they were selling in
33:48store so we could be really really lucky and get a mass order on that that's what we're hoping for
33:54for I've just got a feeling let's do my head in and go through to the boardroom now
34:12good afternoon good afternoon
34:38good afternoon we'll start off with Empire Empire the team leader myself good team leader
34:50good cooperation from your team yes I did good out of the 12 products that were on offer you chose what
35:02we chose a dog's lead mm-hmm and we chose the sleeping bag so bearing in mind I'd laid on two appointments yes with the
35:14hardware store and the posh furniture store how did you go about choosing the products we definitely
35:22wanted to choose products that would associate going to sell at those retailers however we decided to choose the
35:28products we did simply because we felt that those be quicker to sell the two appointments that I made for you
35:38they both bought nothing both bought zero
35:42who did the pitch to them we both did we did we took a product each why do you think they bought zero each the the reason why they didn't buy any sleeping bags is that the the the the
35:56silk bag was not the product for either of those stores even so therefore the two things that I laid on for you were a waste of time I think far as you're concerned I lay on two places for you yeah the
36:08first thing you should do is look at the products that are gone offer and look at the places because you know it's like a bet like placing a bet whether you liked them or not you should have chosen something which you thought to yourself this is a good bet that I can sell to these people you weren't going to sell a sleeping bag in a hardware store was you
36:29no we weren't sir Alan and we knew that before we left so you deliberately ignored my leads
36:35we didn't deliberately ignore it sir and we were confident that one of our products would go to one of the retailers
36:40hmm
36:41well
36:42bit of a waste as far as I'm concerned
36:47there because you're now left with having to go and sell stuff
36:50the next day
36:52yes
36:55over to
36:56ignite
36:58team leader
37:00I was a team leader sir
37:02right you wanted to be a team leader didn't you yes good team leader people I'd say she was good team leaders
37:08around you know back to some structure I would say I think she realized quite a lot on business instinct
37:16did you pay much attention to the fact that the two items that you chose should for starters be saleable to the two appointments that I laid on
37:27I'd like to think I brought it up certainly a few times according to this actually
37:32you've got some orders for your cat playhouse and and bike pods
37:38thank you yeah
37:42what I'm going to do is ask Margaret to read out the results for Empire well their total sales which as you can say were all made on day two
37:44were four thousand five hundred and one pounds
37:58uh four thousand five hundred and one pounds
38:08Nick the sales for ignite ignites total sales
38:14one thousand three hundred and two
38:17Empire you won thank god
38:19very well done you've got four thousand five hundred pounds of sales so your treat
38:26is going to be the vip rolls-royce type helicopter and it's going to take you right over london as
38:33the sun is setting so have a good time and i'll see you on the next task off you go
38:38thank you very much
38:52ben you sold nothing kate you sold nothing philip you sold nothing
38:58lorraine you sold 807 pounds worth and yasmina 495 pounds worth as you know one of you will be fired
39:08off you go
39:14ben kate and philip zero sales
39:22this is the bee's knees wow it's gorgeous
39:26i love it
39:27all of us have to go with these
39:29we're going down
39:31no don't say that
39:35oh
39:36thank you
39:50oh my lord
39:50look at the sunset
39:52what a beautiful sunset
39:54well done everyone we really deserve it
40:01oh dear
40:17oh dear
40:20right guys what do we think went wrong because we all agreed on the products
40:23yeah you know for my you know i've done telly sales and to make one appointment i have to say
40:29i've lost my job over that you didn't make so many sales the next day though let's be honest we
40:34did yeah we made five appointments we made five and we sold at four
40:39saran's going to file her in you know she's been bullshitting everyone for a long time so this is
40:42what you want to do go out there be project manager she blew it she blew it as simple as that
40:46a few home shows are going to come out mystic meg's going to be going back inside the crystal ball
40:50i mean i did the best job i possibly could have done i feel you know i felt that i didn't win
40:55and ultimately i sold more than anybody else
40:58philip he's supposed to be some sort of uh dynamic door-to-door salesman he didn't
41:03show any of that dynamite yesterday unless i put a bomb under his bottom yesterday i don't
41:07think i don't know what else would have moved him oh well it's what we signed up for isn't it a bit
41:12of pressure it is yeah
41:30hello yes could you send them in please yes ryan's ready for you now
41:37what the hell's gone wrong here i could made it clearer when i left you in that rainy car park
42:02on the m1 that i'm going to be looking at everybody's sales figures so you all knew
42:09that you had to actually do something yourself right there was no hiding no every single one of
42:15you have got to go and sell yeah you didn't sell you didn't sell and you didn't sell i mean what i
42:22would say on my individual level is that you know i've kind of come under severe criticism the past two
42:25weeks for not supporting lorraine in the role and for being too vocal for being too
42:29bullshit about for pushing people around so like i said i kept my mouth shut why'd you keep your
42:33mouth shut which is in front of customers i didn't keep my mouth shut in front of customers well look
42:37see this yeah philip order book zero yeah nothing in it yeah it didn't do very well i want to try
42:44it wasn't for the one to try it we tried all day sir allen to get appointments we turned down flat
42:49i actually pitched i rode the bike up and down the shop to show that the product worked in the
42:52professional bike shop he wasn't interested he had three of the best sales people involved in the
42:57in the process so far pitching you know i'm absolutely bewildered that we didn't sell anything
43:01but it was they did didn't they yeah they did who says that you had the three best sales people
43:06in that sub team i would say that you would say that yeah i would is that a fact i would say
43:10clearly not a fact is it that's not in this particular occasion in terms of performance up
43:14until this day i know i can sell and i know i can pitch and i have proven what went wrong then
43:19what went wrong is you can't pitch to somebody and sell to someone if you can't even get your foot
43:23through the door that's part of selling isn't it getting your foot through the door is part of
43:26selling just not there if the boy buyers but the other team had exactly the same difficulties managers
43:32weren't there some shots but they managed to get into more and they all sold i always told you never
43:38to underestimate me right and completely independent of this just to make sure because i like to make
43:45sure that everything i ask people to do is fair i got my own people to make some phone calls okay
43:51they found six doors completely independent of you and they managed to get in in the area that we
43:57were in now in the area that you were in in that area i personally didn't sense any urgency from sub
44:04team did you yasmina well um for me and we came up with the same obstacles people telling us they
44:08weren't there on holiday exactly same obstacles but i just want to know literally was making the
44:12calls banging out the calls oh we weren't what were we doing we're not saying that you weren't but we're
44:18just i we're just bewildered at what why nobody wanted to buy a product that was clearly sellable
44:23well i set you up with the biggest retailer in the uk with respect ben did spot an opportunity
44:29went for it got you know got a senior buyer and got us a good meeting there's one point i'd like to
44:34pick up on lorraine when you went in to see the hardware shop when they asked you about quantities you
44:40you said you asked them to buy five thousand yes i did sir alan uh how can one shop buy five thousand
44:50it did look like a very very big you know supermarket no one could sell five thousand of anything in one
44:56shop i was obviously pitching too high what did your instinct tell you
45:01obviously i got that one wrong hmm not the first time bottom line was you blew it you didn't you
45:10didn't sell enough in the organized pictures and you didn't sell enough a pet at home you could have
45:14put a chimp in a pair of dungarees and wanted pets at home and sold more than 50 units i would have sold
45:18one absolutely disagree with you i think if you put me and kate in there with a soldier no we're not
45:22saying that that picture you know that we're just saying that because we would have sort of
45:25i think how do you know that i think i'm a better sales person than lorraine clearly not you didn't
45:29say anything we stick there in the liverpool for the afternoon and see if she gets on you know
45:32nothing about my sales technique all you've done since the start of this process is put me down
45:37actually and look what happens when i don't we lose and time again i proved you wrong actually
45:42lorraine you're so clever when we sat in here you talk the talking you're the most offensive
45:46person outside of this boardroom absolutely not the words that you use are unfathomable
45:51not in lorraine's defense she actually sold extremely well on the second day i don't disagree
45:55but what i'm saying is i think i could have done better and i think kia could have done better
45:58how do you know if you weren't with her i just know you just know yeah is it not the case though
46:04that one of your customers was also a department store yes that's correct you're pitching you're
46:10there she's not in sight she's off the radar so you can't blame her yeah you're there in a
46:15department store that sells a whole array of products yeah okay so why didn't you sell to
46:21them i think the pictures that they went to had got more potential than the department store that we
46:25were in oh you're sliding away from the point really here was a huge department store in liverpool
46:32yeah you're on your own and you didn't sell they didn't like it was a very different environment
46:36they were selling t-shirts at one pound each that's the type of place it was i mean i really
46:43don't want to hear you talking about that department store is there some bargain basement outfit it's
46:48been there a hundred years it's a fine story you had it yourself and you failed i didn't sense
46:54urgency nick at all and you know there was another in other times are you suggesting a deliberate lack
47:01of support then um i'm going to be completely honest with you i'm very straightforward sir allen
47:06um i believe i believe we seem to be i believe there's individuals in the team that still
47:12at task seven underestimate my ability it's nothing to do with your ability excuse me let me speak
47:17kate um know that i am pm and thought you know okay if we lose the task you know lorraine's up for
47:23the slaughter absolutely we know the structures to stay out of the boardroom at all costs i think it's a psychological
47:28thing with you philip in particular you're saying to me that had you got there let's go about what
47:33did lorraine sell last week we are not excuse me it's like why is it all this big defense over
47:37lorraine lorraine gets away with murder i'm not defending her i'm just stating the facts this is a
47:42factual process and i am actually you're dealing with instinct in the fact you're dealing with
47:46instincts such good i'm so strong i'm so strong i'm so strong i'm so strong what did you do before you
47:51come in here build up a con vendetta oh you're the victim again so you don't like it do you when people
47:57like you know tell you the truth through him you know you're going to get this mystic made character
48:00and the inspiration where's your instinct now i'm very very factual philip really lorraine no it's just
48:06outrageous isn't it lorraine you did say to me this morning i'm ignoring you are you finished
48:15right i don't care whether one of you or two of you or even three of you go today to be perfectly frank
48:22yeah it just makes our job a little bit easier so lorraine will you tell me which two people
48:30you're bringing back in this boardroom based on facts it will be kate and philip
48:36right yasmina and ben go back to the penthouse
48:42you three you're going to step outside there i'm going to have a chat with nick and margaret
48:47one of you will get fired okay thank you sir
48:59what a mess you know what i'm struggling with is this lorraine is whether she does alienate people
49:05clearly there is something wrong with this philip and kate towards her maybe there's a sort of a
49:11pincer movement going on well she had didn't alienate yasmina or ben did she well she's alien
49:16hidden jasmine in the past hello yes send them in please
49:34it is evident that the pair of you haven't got a good word to say about the rain
49:47and you are kind of fueling the fire also on this and that's where my concern is
49:52philip here your own words your worst qualities are arrogant cocky stubborn and a control freak yeah
50:06but i am arrogant i'm a big head and it's like i said last week you need slapping out of us and i
50:10think this way i improved incredibly i was responsive to lorraine and effectively we lost the task
50:15i was project manager the last task and no one was bitching about me at the end of the day and we
50:19won if i remember rightly that last task was a fool's win wasn't it didn't the other team just bomb
50:25out badly yes yeah you didn't make any money no it was a tough task around you didn't make any money
50:30but we won you won by default you lost money and you won by default yeah i kind of doing nothing right
50:36listen don't get impatient with me philip you know i'm not so honest just you know you kind of
50:40i can't seem to say anything right you criticize the rain i get in the neck i win as project
50:43manager i get in the neck i can't do anything right that's all you've done today philip is
50:47criticize lorraine if you could come out with something else constructive um i might listen
50:52to you that's all you've done from the minute you walked in this door today because she's trouble
50:56sir annan she's trouble week after week after week you'll get this again and again and again
51:00trouble before i think i've been one of the outstanding candidates over these past few weeks
51:04i've had listen look look you know the the body rocker thing yeah this bleeding thing's gone to
51:09your head or what okay you've done well there yeah in the design of it okay but that's it you know
51:15one swallow don't make a summer you understand because since then you ain't done that great from
51:20well i saw three items last week sir annan tell us about pants man
51:27kate yeah what i cannot understand and cannot get my head around is how you can go from hero to zero
51:35you didn't sell one thing this week believe me there's no one more frustrated about the day are
51:41you sure it wasn't a case of wanting her to fall on her sword it's a lorraine i'm absolutely positive
51:46i fully expected to be here today on the back of having no orders because that just isn't acceptable
51:51but i believe i've performed consistently throughout all of the tasks and that's been the reason that i've
51:56not been in the final three in the boardroom hmm lorraine slow burner in the thought process i've
52:05had reported back to me i have yes and i'm honest about everything that i am you know and i'm learning
52:10good to me is it slow but what does that mean a slow burner in the thought process what i meant by
52:14that sir alan is it takes me probably a couple of more minutes to dawn on me what the what i've been
52:19asked but when i'm when it dawns i'm bang on target unlike a lot of other people i just simply
52:24see on the basis why i was reserved and quiet it's like i say that i may ask you twice of all you
52:29for being too abrupt too forward with lorraine not giving me the opportunity i was very aware of that
52:33that i didn't want to be recognized as someone who hadn't learned from what i've been told
52:36no i just think they were out on a jolly day out to be perfectly honest you are pathetic and i think
52:42at the end of the day ultimately you know it's certainly you know driven down our sales figures
52:46unfortunately outside of this boardroom you know there is a close friendship going on here
52:52and i believe on that day you know it did affect their ability what's all this close friendship
52:57nonsense i don't like friends it has absolutely nothing to do with business and anyone that tries
53:02to it's implied that it does well i just need to keep tactic and it's not tactic it's a fact all day
53:07long there was no urgency and unfortunately i don't want to sort of bring personal issues into
53:12a business matter that i believe that it did affect their overall performance i would never
53:17compromise my business performance for personal reasons ever i've got no loyalties here philip or
53:22otherwise at the same token i don't think it was philip's strongest task i think he took a step back
53:30i think he was quite quiet throughout the day all i know is i'm here to win i'm here because i really
53:34want the job i have a difficult task to perform now it's gonna easily be solved in the most simplest of
53:46ways kate um you have performed well in the past weeks philip
54:09you're certainly a fiery person and i'm thinking now when i'm looking at you and listening to you
54:16sometimes i'm thinking about the hundreds of other people that that i employ and thinking of their
54:21reaction to you and it ain't good the picture i've got in my head it's not good at all
54:30lorraine the underlying concern that i have is that you alienate people
54:35you clearly alienate these two they think you're a waste of space some of your own words slow burner
54:44in the thought process do i need a slow burner no i don't need a slow burner you keep telling me
54:50that you know you're learning step by step by step i mean no disrespect you're not 22 years old
54:56no that's right some of these elementary things should have been learned already
55:05the rain i'm i'm still not clear about you
55:17but philip i think i'm clear in my mind that your bravado and attitude
55:23ain't gonna fit in my organization so philip you're fired
55:28go back to the penthouse
55:58i think he showed his true colors in the end to be honest with you
56:16so
56:26what was quite shocking was that um after phil had been given a dressing down by saran and said
56:38that you can't behave like this he just went and did the same thing in the ballroom again you know
56:42probably worse kate would turn on phil like that she's a clever girl she's a clever girl
56:47oh my gosh well done you irish woman all i can say is don't underestimate me
56:59i was literally being absolutely ripped apart did you bring up the kate and phil card i'll finish that in a second
57:10did you i had to in the end i was on my way out
57:15i feel absolutely insulted that you could ever suggest that anything that goes on in my personal
57:20life impacts on my business performance
57:27i'm disappointed you know i thought i had the potential to go a little further than this
57:30um unfortunately i crossed paths with lorraine it was it was the end of us
57:34yeah i've got a big mouth on us there's no doubt about it but i'm a much better candidate than she
57:37is and i think they'll remember me and i think they'll also remember the body rocker but unfortunately
57:42they'll also remember punsman one job now eight candidates remain sir alan's search for his
57:50apprentice continues next time you are going to rebrand the town of margate it's off to the seaside
58:03you've done any same-sex couple modeling i haven't okay that's fine it's not going to be kissing or
58:07anything like that but selling sun and sand not too much suggestive licking please guys we're not
58:13doing a porno is swept away by storms the leaflet backs up the poster honestly there was no message
58:21there at all if you're gonna do it do it you're fine see the extended taxi ride with philip online now
58:33at the apprentice website and of course he'll be joining adrian charles on bbc 2 in just a moment
58:38for the apprentice you're fired
