00:00It's time to go 10,000 feet up and four miles back into the heart of the hunt in this week.

00:06S. episode of our Predator Explained series.

00:10Join me as we break down the terrifying new creature, the deranged human, and the deeper lore surrounding the Yatia.

00:24Let's start with a quick recap.

00:26We last saw the Predator in the jungles of Guatemala, where it was stalking a group of elite Special Forces soldiers.

00:34After taking out most of the team, the Predator was eventually killed by a soldier named Locke.

00:39But as we know from the previous movie, Predators can regenerate from even the smallest of cuttings taken from their bodies.

00:47And the head of this particular Predator was chopped off and taken by a rival guild of hunters for their trophy room.

00:52This movie takes place a couple years before the original 1987 film.

00:57So what is happening to the head of the Predator?

00:59How does it get from the jungle of Central America to the frozen wastelands of North America?

01:04They are questions I hope to answer in this episode.

01:06The movie opens with a bang as we watch a group of four men get dropped onto a frozen lake in the middle of nowhere.

01:12It's here that we learn that this particular game reserve called Badlands is home to some of the most dangerous creatures in the world,

01:19including grizzlies, wolves, and mountain lions.

01:21Not exactly the kind of animals you would expect to find in the jungle.

01:25This immediately tells us two things.

01:28A. These humans have traveled to the past, specifically to an area of North America 12,000 years ago during the last Ice Age.

01:37And B. They have traveled to a completely different planet.

01:40I mean, who else would be foolish enough to hunt such dangerous creatures without proper equipment or training?

01:45But the humans aren't alone.

01:48We quickly learn that they are being stalked by one of the most elusive and deadly creatures in the universe.

01:53The Utya.

01:54For once.

01:55They aren't the hunters, but the hunted.

01:58As soon as the humans set up camp for the night, they are attacked by a never-before-seen type of creature.

02:03This thing is a predator, but unlike any we have ever seen before.

02:08Its armor seems almost translucent, allowing the creature to blend into its snowy surroundings.

02:14Its dreadlocks have also been replaced by long-flowing icicles that resemble blades.

02:19And instead of a mouth full of gnashing teeth, this creature has a single, elongated tooth similar to that of an ice fish.

02:27Finally, as if straight out of an alien nightmare, the creature's head explodes, revealing a second, smaller head underneath.

02:34Think of it like a Russian doll, only far more terrifying.

02:38Now, don't get me wrong, this creature is clearly a predator, but this movie is obviously not taking itself too seriously.

02:44So what is going on here?

02:45However, I believe this creature is not only meant to be a more formidable opponent for the humans,

02:51but it's also meant to pay homage to some of the creatures that inhabit the Earth's badlands.

02:56If you look at the creature's head shape, you can see it bears an uncanny resemblance to an owl,

03:01animal that is perfectly adapted for hunting in the snow.

03:05In fact, the entire design of this creature seems to be based off of owls, right down to its translucent feathers.

03:12The only difference being that the owl is a master of stealth, while this creature is a master of deception.

03:19By the way, its head explodes and reveals another head.

03:23I think it's safe to say that this is by far one of the most unique creatures in the Predator franchise,

03:28and hopefully it will and be the last.

03:30In my opinion, the best part about this movie is the introduction of another human hunter.

03:37His name is Royce, and he's played by Danny Trejo.

03:40Unlike the other three humans in the movie, Royce is actually prepared for the hunt.

03:45He's got traps, guns, and even a dog.

03:48Unfortunately, none of these things help him much, as he is eventually captured by the UTA.

04:04But at least he goes down in style by blowing up the creature's ship.

04:08Talk about a fiery end.

04:10So what is the meaning of all this?

04:13What do these frozen wastelands represent?

04:15In order to understand this, we need to look no further than the title of this movie, Badlands.

04:20The word Badlands comes from the French term Les Moveses Tears,

04:25which translates to the Badlands or the Bad Waters.

04:28In Canada and the northern United States, Badlands are regions rich in clay.

04:34Shale and mudstone formations which have been eroded by wind and water into strange shapes.

04:40But to me, the term Badlands means something more.

04:43In my opinion, the term refers to the bad or evil lands inhabited by creatures who are equally as bad or evil.

04:50In short, the Badlands are a place where good people go to die.
