00:00My name's Mike Rowe, and this is my job.
00:08I explore the country looking for people who aren't afraid to get dirty.
00:14Hard-working men and women who earn an honest living.
00:17How long have you been doing this?
00:1821 years.
00:19Doing the kinds of jobs that make civilized life possible for the rest of us.
00:24Now get ready.
00:27Oh, man.
00:28To get dirty.
00:30Coming up on Dirty Jobs, I visit a reptilian resort.
00:38Great.
00:39Full of unpredictable rascals.
00:41Good. Turtle poo. I was missing that.
00:44And cute, cuddly creatures.
00:46This is a poisonous snake, for real.
00:48Sure, definitely.
00:49To visit a place like this.
00:50That adds a lot of python crap on me.
00:52I'd pay a lot of money.
00:54And hold on, man. I got like $20.25.
00:56In fact, I'll give the shirt off my back.
01:00I need your shirt.
01:01My shirt?
01:01Just do it.
01:02Why am I lying on another man who's lying on an alligator?
01:08Oh, God.
01:08The first sign I saw said snake farm.
01:23The second sign promised an experience.
01:26People ask me all the time how we get our ideas for dirty jobs.
01:29And the truth is, here in Texas, outside of San Antonio, we just follow the signs.
01:34Saw it right off the interstate here.
01:36Anyhow, my favorite sign is up here by the door.
01:40Closed today due to maintenance.
01:42That's the kind of sign that makes a guy like me wonder, what kind of maintenance do you do at a snake farm?
01:52Eric and Dara Traeger are the proprietors of the snake farm, and I'm guessing Eric and Dara.
01:56That's right.
01:57How are you?
01:58Good. How are you?
01:58I'm well, thanks.
01:59The sign says closed, but the door's open.
02:02Yeah, we thought the sign would keep people up.
02:04Yeah, well, you got the wrong guy.
02:06You're holding a snake.
02:07Dara, what kind is that?
02:08This is a caramel albino ball python.
02:11I see.
02:11And what are you holding, Eric?
02:12This is a piebald ball python.
02:14Piebald?
02:15Piebald.
02:15May I?
02:16Absolutely.
02:17How many snakes do you have here on the snake farm?
02:19We have about 500 different types of snakes.
02:21And how long have you owned the place?
02:22We just got it.
02:23Is that why you're closed?
02:24I got it.
02:25Yeah, we're closed for maintenance.
02:26We're moving things around and cleaning up a bit.
02:28When you say moving things around, what do you mean exactly?
02:31Moving some snakes, moving some alligators and crocodiles, and moving the animals.
02:36Where'd you come from?
02:37What were you doing before this for a living?
02:39Chiropractors.
02:40Both of you?
02:41Yeah, we met in chiropractic school.
02:44So you're driving down the road.
02:46You can come in.
02:46You see a reptile.
02:47Maybe get an adjustment and then be on your way.
02:49Yep.
02:50All right.
02:50We like taking care of people and animals.
02:52All right.
02:53Well, the point today is that I followed the signs and you guys are moving snakes and whatever,
02:58and I'm here to help.
02:59So what can I do?
02:59Absolutely.
03:00We're going to start off by Apollo.
03:02Apollo always comes out on this little shelf here when we're open for the kids.
03:05Good grief.
03:06Apollo is a lot of snake.
03:07He's an albino Burmese python.
03:09Kids love him.
03:10Put him around their shoulders.
03:11The parents take pictures of him.
03:13Really?
03:13So he sucks it up.
03:14Let's take him out.
03:14He's an attention hug.
03:15Let's take him out.
03:16Let me take this from you.
03:18Easy there.
03:19He's got a good grip on you.
03:20Yeah, he does.
03:21All right.
03:21There you go.
03:22I'll help you out.
03:23An albino snake.
03:24This just slides?
03:25Yeah.
03:26Just slide it this way.
03:28All right.
03:29Go slow.
03:30That's a beautiful snake.
03:32What does Apollo weigh?
03:34Apollo weighs about 90 pounds.
03:35What you do is you get your hand in here and just let him know that you're here.
03:38Uh-huh.
03:39And I'll let you and Dara go ahead and...
03:41Dara, me and you, okay?
03:42Yeah, sure.
03:43Uh, excuse me.
03:44Let's all start unrolling him.
03:46Get in the middle there.
03:47Just unroll him.
03:48Yeah, just unroll him.
03:49He's got that perfect circle going.
03:51Uh-huh.
03:52And...
03:52Has Chris smashed something to pull?
03:55Ooh.
03:56Good Lord.
03:58Good Lord, I might have pooed a little on that one.
04:01Oh, crap.
04:03What was that?
04:03It was a plate glass sliding door.
04:05Oh, my God.
04:06I think something tore loose once again.
04:08Good news is we have other pieces of glass.
04:10Hey, we just came by to help.
04:12We're sorry about all the damage.
04:14You know, I'm locking the door next time.
04:15You know what?
04:16You really should.
04:17Yeah.
04:17You leave the door open.
04:18You never know what kind of jackass will wander in here.
04:20You guys stay away from the venomous.
04:22All right.
04:24Well, Chris, I hope you're happy.
04:26We were looking for a way to start the show, and you came through again.
04:34Okay, sorry about the glass.
04:36Where were we?
04:37Oh, we're just going to take Apollo out.
04:38Right.
04:40Go ahead and grab his head.
04:41Lift him up.
04:42Mm-hmm.
04:43Start pulling him out, and I'll get the back half of him.
04:46The back half?
04:47Yep.
04:47Go ahead and start pulling him out.
04:48Okay.
04:49He's kind of heavy.
04:50Yeah, he is.
04:51Ugh.
04:56Great.
04:57And let's just set him on this ledge over here, where he usually goes.
05:01This is his usual ledge.
05:03This is where he hangs out.
05:04It's so odd.
05:05It's like a cat on a windowsill, except it's a snake on a ledge.
05:10Yep.
05:10This is what everybody comes year after year for, remembering it when they were kids.
05:14Everyone comes and gets pictures with them, and...
05:16Pictures of Apollo.
05:17Apollo.
05:17Yep.
05:20So, okay, if this is where we're putting Apollo, where are we putting these two?
05:25Well, we have a holding tank that we're going to put them in.
05:28These things are huge.
05:30Particulated python is the longest snake in the world.
05:32Good grief.
05:33Hey, how are you?
05:34Hey.
05:35Mike.
05:35Jared.
05:36Jared.
05:37Pleasure.
05:38What do you do here?
05:39Oh, I pretty much run the place top to bottom with the help of the ownership.
05:44You were here before Eric and Dara?
05:45Yeah, sure was.
05:47Okay.
05:48And these are, what's it called?
05:50Articulated?
05:51These are reticulated pythons.
05:52They're from Southeast Asia and into Indonesia.
05:56They grow upwards of 33 feet long.
05:59Our biggest girl in there is actually still a youngster.
06:01She's only about 17 feet.
06:03Are they as friendly as Apollo, who seems sedated?
06:06One in there is not too bad.
06:09The other two have nipped before, so we'll be careful when we pull them out.
06:14Nipped?
06:15Nipped.
06:16Nipped.
06:17Forgive me, but I'm just noticing your...
06:19Was your thumb nipped?
06:21Well, that would be a bite.
06:23That's a rattlesnake bite.
06:24Non-venomous snakes nip.
06:26Venomous snakes bite.
06:28Huh?
06:29Huh.
06:30Crocodile bite.
06:31Crocodile bite.
06:32I was thinking nip, bite.
06:34Yeah, I'm going nip, nip, bite.
06:37Dude, what?
06:38I mean, seriously, that's a rattlesnake bit your thumb off?
06:41Yeah, a rattlesnake bit the tip of the thumb.
06:43They have a hemotoxic venom, which kills the tissue.
06:46And swelled up real big, got compartment syndrome, got necrotic.
06:50And a few surgeries later, that's what they've got, so...
06:53Are we moving rattlesnakes today?
06:55We will be.
06:56We have to, we've got to move the rattlesnakes.
06:58Let me see your hands.
06:59I still have all my fingers.
07:00I still have all my fingers.
07:02Let me see your arms.
07:03What's going on with you?
07:04What's going on here?
07:05Seriously.
07:06What?
07:07I mean, this is...
07:09You bite the snakes?
07:10I used to compete.
07:12I'm learning a lot of interesting things about some fascinating people.
07:15The job is to move three of these combined.
07:17This must be 60 feet when you put them all together over in that area.
07:20First one we've got to move, Lucy.
07:23She's the girl in the water bowl.
07:24She's probably the easiest to work with, but she's also the heaviest.
07:28All right.
07:29Hook the snake.
07:30Pick up the snake.
07:30Move the snake.
07:31Seems simple.
07:32Good.
07:33First, kind of tap her.
07:34Let her know you're not food and you're going to pull her out there.
07:38Her name is Lucy?
07:39Yep, that's Lucy.
07:40Lucy, I'm Mike.
07:41I'm not food.
07:41I'm going to be pulling you out.
07:43All right.
07:43Go ahead and hook maybe under the first third of her body.
07:47There's no end to her body.
07:48All right.
07:50Go ahead and pull a loop up.
07:52Sorry, Lucy.
07:52That ought to do it.
07:55All right.
07:55You got her?
07:56Yeah, I got her.
07:57You can go ahead and put the hook down.
07:58All right.
07:59I'm going to need you to grab just a few feet down from me.
08:02Right.
08:06It's like a cable.
08:07All right.
08:08Like a steel cable.
08:09Now, follow me over here.
08:12You got it?
08:13Stick her in her holding tank.
08:14Right.
08:15Got the whole thing out?
08:16Yes.
08:18At least she was in the water, so she's a little bit harder to hold.
08:21All right.
08:21All right.
08:25She's hissing a little bit, wanting to come out here.
08:28Let's shut the glass a little bit.
08:30She doesn't want to go in there?
08:31All right.
08:32Just kind of focus her in there a little bit.
08:33Be careful, man.
08:33This is suddenly, you're down your last nine and a half fingers, man.
08:37I don't want to see any sudden mistakes.
08:39All right.
08:41Look at the color here.
08:42I mean, I can't get over that.
08:44It almost looks neon.
08:45They're called reticulated pythons because their patterns are all broken up.
08:48Right.
08:49Full of color.
08:49It's to blend into their habitat.
08:53All right.
08:53Two more.
08:56These guys aren't quite as friendly, so it's a little bit different approach here.
09:02The first one, I'm going to grab behind the head just to make sure we don't get bit.
09:06You watch what I do because the next one, it's your turn.
09:10Okay?
09:10Okay.
09:11Coming up, they bite.
09:13I'll let you know if you need to worry.
09:15And they squeeze.
09:16Don't forget, these are constrictors, so around my neck isn't a good idea.
09:20But they have a secret weapon that's worse.
09:23That's a new one.
09:25Then, you have a rattlesnake pit.
09:26We have a rattlesnake pit.
09:27Guess where I'm going.
09:30Later, I get tough down at the crock pond.
09:33You're not very intimidating to him.
09:35Wow.
09:46See the hook, please?
09:55I'm going to need you to get over here on this side here.
09:58All right.
09:58And if you could get her head, she's back there in the corner.
10:06Get, kind of hook her, pull her head out to where I'll be able to grasp her with both
10:11hands here.
10:12There you go.
10:13Uh-oh.
10:13Now, what's happening with this bell bow?
10:15I'll let you know if you need to worry.
10:16That's just a little hiss, just a warning.
10:19This just seems, I don't know, unnatural.
10:22Maybe dangerous.
10:24All right.
10:25All right.
10:26So, you're grabbing this snake with a purpose.
10:29Yeah.
10:29Reticulated pythons are known to be a little more aggressive than most pythons.
10:34And she'll definitely show it because she's about to shed her skin.
10:37So, she's not going to cooperate with us too well.
10:39No.
10:40Now, if you could...
10:40What can I do for you?
10:41Come over here and maybe grab a little loop here.
10:44A little...
10:44Yeah.
10:45Something like this?
10:46Yeah.
10:46She's pretty heavy, so...
10:48Dude.
10:48Don't forget, these are constrictors, so around my neck isn't a good idea.
10:55Gotcha.
10:56Got it?
10:56Yep.
10:57All right.
11:06Oh, crap.
11:08I'm losing her head.
11:09There we go.
11:11Got it?
11:11Yep.
11:13All right.
11:14We'll go tail first a little.
11:16I'm going to fade this way.
11:17You guys go ahead head first.
11:18Head first.
11:19Okay.
11:20You got it?
11:20Yep.
11:23How many people normally do this?
11:26About five or six.
11:27We're a couple people short.
11:29Oh, crap.
11:30Yeah.
11:31That's a lot of python crap on me.
11:33When biting or constricting isn't working, musking is their next defense.
11:37Oh, jeez.
11:38That's what you see.
11:39Big snake just crapped all over me.
11:41All right.
11:42Dude.
11:42All right.
11:44All right.
11:45Go on in there.
11:47That wasn't so bad.
11:48No glass broken?
11:49No.
11:49Nothing broke, but I got peed on pretty bad.
11:51Crapped on a lot.
11:52Some of that crap's my own.
11:55Tiger reticulated python poo.
11:59That's a new one.
11:59I picked a heck of a day to come by the snake farm.
12:03I sure did.
12:05This one, same drill?
12:09Same drill, but you're the guy that's grabbing behind the head.
12:13A little hint of advice, don't let him get much slack, because that's when he can turn around and get you.
12:18This guy will bite, but you're up.
12:20You're up.
12:22What happens?
12:24What's a python bite feel like?
12:26Well, they've got nearly 100 teeth in their mouth.
12:29Every tooth is curved back, kind of like a fish hook.
12:32That's enough.
12:33That's all good information.
12:34All right.
12:35All right.
12:35The moral is grab them behind the head and don't let go.
12:37Yeah, don't meet their teeth.
12:42All right.
12:42Well, just kind of kneel down, get in a position you're comfortable with.
12:47Just go in fast.
12:49Don't hesitate, though.
12:50If you go in, you've got to go for it.
12:52Both hands?
12:54I'd recommend it.
12:59Oh, dude, it just feels like jumping out of it.
13:01It's all wrong.
13:02Really?
13:03Just grab her.
13:04Just another day.
13:04Ah, this is the big snake.
13:14All righty.
13:17All right, I'll follow you out.
13:18Roger.
13:28No.
13:31Nice.
13:34Big snake.
13:40Big snake.
13:42All right.
13:43When do I let her go?
13:44Right now.
13:45I'm going to back it up.
13:45All right, let her go.
13:46Okay.
13:47There we go.
13:48All right.
13:55Oh, nice and smooth.
13:56Like you've done it a hundred times.
13:58Yeah, that was the first time for me.
13:59That's big snake.
14:00Yeah.
14:01That's big snake.
14:02All right.
14:03It's a big snake.
14:04The snake's big.
14:05If you're looking for adjectives to describe the snake, I'd go with big.
14:09Big snake.
14:12That's kind of exciting.
14:13Yeah.
14:14Get your blood going.
14:15I mean, I know it's old hat for you.
14:18You've been, would you say, breeding snakes since you were 13?
14:21Yeah, I let them breed.
14:23Had quite a puberty at that time.
14:24That's funny.
14:25Funny.
14:25Good.
14:28Plastic with rocks on the lid, never good.
14:30Yeah, these are the ones that are going to go back in that cage.
14:31And what kind of snakes are in here?
14:33These are red-tailed boa constrictors.
14:35They eat birds.
14:36They also eat mammals.
14:37So the teeth are a little bit longer.
14:39We're mammals.
14:40We are mammals.
14:42Yeah.
14:43Same drill.
14:44Yes.
14:45Grab the head.
14:45Right.
14:46On these, you can kind of.
14:48Huh?
14:48Just like that.
14:49Uh-huh.
14:49All right, cool.
14:51Hopefully, head's not over here.
14:53All right, here we go.
14:54Enormous snakes.
14:55More giant snakes.
14:56Look at those things.
14:57Shoot.
14:58Well, I think you can grab that one.
15:00Head's right there.
15:01I think you can, too.
15:03All right.
15:04You're the brand-new proprietor.
15:11All right, I'm in.
15:16All right.
15:16Here, I wasn't even watching.
15:18Oh, I got it.
15:18So, bring them up.
15:20Like that?
15:21Mm-hmm.
15:21He's got teeth.
15:25He's got pretty good teeth on him.
15:26Let's see those teeth.
15:30Now he's going to close them out.
15:31Yeah.
15:33He does not want to let go of my arm.
15:35Well, he's a boa.
15:36I'm told they're a constricting snake from South America.
15:39Colombia, actually.
15:40They eat mammals.
15:44Okay.
15:47It's your turn.
15:49Coming up, when we come back.
15:51I'm going to reach in and grab this snake.
15:53Don't go away.
15:54They're very quick, aren't they, too?
15:56They're very fast.
15:57Then?
15:59Western diamondback rattle sanks cause more human fatalities than any other venomous snake in North America.
16:05All right.
16:05Come on down.
16:06It's decision time at the snake pit.
16:10Later, fearsome creatures can also be filthy.
16:12Croc and alligator manure that settled to the bottom.
16:16Then we need to pressure wash it, get it cleaned up.
16:18Sure.
16:19Sure.
16:21Grab them right behind the head.
16:33They're very quick, aren't they, too?
16:35They're very fast.
16:36They hit birds.
16:37Birds are fast.
16:38They sit there, they're an ambush predator, and they're kind of like sitting there real still waiting for you to come up.
16:44Like this.
16:44Like this situation right now.
16:45This would be the situation.
16:46This would be an excellent scenario whereby the red-tailed boa could, uh...
16:50Looks like he's sleeping but ready to...
16:52He's ready to pounce, right.
16:58I heard him hiss.
17:00It's like I come in and he knows I'm coming in.
17:02Hissing is typically a, uh...
17:04It's defending, saying, I'm pissed off.
17:06Yes.
17:06Stay away from me.
17:07Right.
17:07Or I'll bite you.
17:08Right.
17:09Hiss and piss.
17:10Virtually interchangeable terms.
17:12Just means you need to grab them a little faster.
17:14Let's see.
17:23I'm glad you're getting this one.
17:26Okay.
17:30Solid as a rock.
17:32But this is my snake-grabbing hand.
17:38Ah, crap.
17:39Okay.
17:39What's that bulge in this, uh...
17:45That area there?
17:46That'd be muscle.
17:46Good.
17:47He's flexing.
17:48Good, great.
17:49Yeah.
17:52When we come back, I'm going to reach in and grab this snake.
17:55Don't go away.
17:57Welcome back.
17:58I was just about to reach in and grab the snake.
18:01Where was I?
18:02You were going to grab the snake.
18:03Right.
18:04Yeah.
18:06Okay.
18:09Really are wonderful creatures.
18:14I mean, they've been around from...
18:16From the beginning.
18:17Almost prehistoric.
18:18Almost prehistoric.
18:19Yeah.
18:21Hmm.
18:24I'm going to go ahead and grab the snake now.
18:26All right.
18:29I got your back.
18:30It's not my back I'm worried about.
18:36All right.
18:37You got it.
18:38Lift the other part.
18:39Back up.
18:42There you go.
18:47Okay.
18:48We can...
18:49Just throw his head up there.
18:51Okay.
18:51Cool.
18:58Okay.
18:58Good.
18:59Good.
18:59Good.
18:59Good.
18:59Good.
19:00Good.
19:01We're moving snakes.
19:02I've moved two snakes.
19:03Ten fingers.
19:04What do you want to do now?
19:10Wrestle a tiger?
19:11I think we need to go fish out some rattlesnakes.
19:14Fish out rattlesnakes.
19:16From where?
19:16The rattlesnake pit.
19:17You have a rattlesnake pit?
19:18We have a rattlesnake pit.
19:20Has a bunch of rattlesnakes in it and we need to move them.
19:22Well, it would, wouldn't it?
19:23It's a pit.
19:24It's a pit.
19:24Well, that's not a good sign.
19:34The infamous rattlesnake pit.
19:36Are you kidding me?
19:38This is a pit full of rattlesnakes, he said somewhat self-evidently.
19:45One, two, three...
19:47How many rattlesnakes are in the pit?
19:50I think we're going to count them as we catch them.
19:52Jared, why are we going to catch them?
19:54Well, it's time to clean the pit out.
19:56As you can see, we've got people throwing coins in, trying to get the snakes to rattle.
20:00There's a lot of poop in there.
20:01So, for sanitary reasons, it's time to replace the mulch.
20:06But to do that, we've got to get the snakes out.
20:08That's where you come in.
20:10I don't want to sound, you know, obtuse, but, I mean, rattlesnakes are...
20:14This is a poisonous snake, for real.
20:16Sure, definitely.
20:17They're very dangerous.
20:19Matter of fact, most of these are western diamondback rattlesnakes
20:22that are known to cause more human fatalities than any other venomous snake in North America.
20:28I see.
20:29And is every snake in here a rattlesnake?
20:33The majority of them are, although we've got Texas rat snakes, coach whip snakes,
20:39maybe even a bull snake or two.
20:41They strike about a third of their body length,
20:43so if you stay three feet away from them, you're relatively safe.
20:47But there are some big snakes in there, so...
20:49Yeah.
20:50So, to recap, we're going to put a ladder here.
20:52We're going to go into the snake pit.
20:54We're going to take the snakes, put them into a garbage pail of some kind.
20:58Sure.
20:58And then we're going to change up their mulch and pick up the coins.
21:03And people throw the coins in.
21:04Why?
21:04They want to hear the snakes rattle.
21:07Okay.
21:08Do we have to keep the money, at least?
21:10Yeah, we'll let you keep anything you find.
21:12All right.
21:14Can a cameraman come down with us?
21:15Well, after we clear it a little bit.
21:19It's not quite safe yet, so we won't put too many lives at risk, but...
21:24Would it be okay to put Doug's life at marginal risk?
21:27Can he be on the ladder, at least?
21:29After we clear it a little bit, sure, we can do that.
21:31All right.
21:32Doug, were you paying attention?
21:35It's dangerous down there.
21:39You said, say, three feet from them, but there's not one area in here where you can be three feet.
21:43Well, I'll tell you what.
21:44I'm going to go down first and give you a little bit of room to work.
21:47That's what I like to hear.
21:48That's what I want to hear.
21:50All right.
21:53You want to hand me the trash can on down, please?
21:58Ready?
22:01There are roaches down there as well.
22:05Oh, jeez.
22:11Grab these close guys first here.
22:15All right.
22:16This guy isn't going to do you any harm.
22:21That's just a Texas rat snake here.
22:24They're totally harmless.
22:26Can you see he won't do you any harm?
22:28No, I believe you.
22:30Especially if I don't touch him.
22:33There's a lot of rattling in the snake pit.
22:39We'll go ahead and get this guy.
22:42He's obviously going to start moving around a little bit on us.
22:45I think, you know, I don't want to overstate.
22:49I don't want to overdramatize.
22:50But this is, you know, I think there are a lot of people that wouldn't go into an area
22:55that's enclosed full of poisonous snakes.
22:57You just don't seem to give a damn, Jared.
22:59No, it's just another day.
23:01All right.
23:01Come on down.
23:02Coming up, to catch a rattler, you need speed.
23:10Wow.
23:11Big snake.
23:12Heavy snake.
23:13Then I take a dip in the reptile pond.
23:15The heck is this thing?
23:17Where a 150-year-old turtle still has all its teeth.
23:21Wow.
23:21Wow.
23:22Wow.
23:22Wow.
23:22Wow.
23:23Wow.
23:24Wow.
23:24Wow.
23:24Wow.
23:25Wow.
23:26Wow.
23:26Wow.
23:26Wow.
23:27Wow.
23:28Wow.
23:28Wow.
23:29Wow.
23:30Wow.
23:31Wow.
23:32Don't mind that rat snake crawling out.
23:34I don't?
23:36I don't mind him.
23:37If we have to, we'll get him last.
23:41All right.
23:41That's my magic grabbing thing.
23:42You might want that.
23:43Thanks.
23:43I sure do.
23:44All right.
23:44So what you want to do is grab the snake roughly mid-body.
23:49Any particular one?
23:50Yep.
23:50Any one that...
23:51How about this cranky little one?
23:52Yeah.
23:52That would be a good one to start with.
23:58He's very small.
23:59Like, I can't even grab him.
24:00Look, I caught a stick.
24:02I caught the elusive diamondback stick.
24:06Very rare.
24:08All right.
24:08Now, when I'm down in here, don't be playing around too much here.
24:12Got that.
24:12There's only one ladder.
24:13That's one escape route.
24:15That's right.
24:15I will climb over you.
24:18I hear you.
24:19All right.
24:19Let's...
24:20All right.
24:21I couldn't get the little...
24:21I'm going to get this guy right here.
24:22All right.
24:24That's about mid-body?
24:25Yep.
24:25That's about mid-body.
24:26Oh, see, there's no way to get him in here without getting him within striking distance,
24:32so...
24:33Oh, you're pretty good.
24:34That'll work.
24:37Everybody.
24:38Wow.
24:47Wow.
24:48Big snake.
24:49Everyone, huh?
24:49Big, heavy snake.
24:51Can you support his body here?
24:52Thanks.
24:53It'd be hard to catch a roach with this thing, wouldn't it?
25:06This falls into that screwing around category, doesn't it?
25:08Yeah, it sure does.
25:09Sorry about that.
25:09That's kind of like Miyagi.
25:11Miyagi, right.
25:20Thanks.
25:20Thanks.
25:23How much money have you pulled out of here?
25:27Near $100 and change.
25:45Okay.
25:45Snakes go back in the pit.
25:49All right.
25:49Jared and I are now safely out of the pit,
25:51and he is bringing our garbage can full of snakes back to the lip of the pit,
25:56where I assume we will now reintroduce them to their freshly mulched environment.
26:00Doug's re-evaluating his entire career choice.
26:22Say hi to Dave Barsky.
26:24You guys are going to get along great.
26:25Well, Jared, snakes look happy.
26:35I think we're done.
26:36All right.
26:36Well, I appreciate your help.
26:38Happy to help.
26:39What else you got here on the snake farm?
26:41Oh, we've got all kinds of stuff.
26:43How about we, uh, clean out a crock pond?
26:48That should never ask.
26:49To the crock pond.
26:52All right.
27:01The snake farm covers three acres, has all kinds of different animals,
27:05but the main attraction outside is the big boys.
27:08This is definitely not your petting zoo.
27:11Eric figures it'll take about two years to get the snake farm into the shape he wants it,
27:18and the animals will definitely be the benefactors.
27:25All right.
27:28These are crocodiles and alligators.
27:32Yep.
27:33A couple things for you to know before you go in there.
27:35American alligator has the strongest jaw bite of any animal in the world with a jaw pressure of 3,000 pounds per square inch.
27:44Great.
27:46The crocodile is known to consume more humans a year than any other animal in the world.
27:52So, with that being said, let's get to work.
27:56After you.
27:57What exactly is the job?
28:07Well, if you take a look, we've got a partway emptied pond.
28:11We've already started it.
28:13The sludge that's left over, mostly crock and alligator manure that's settled to the bottom.
28:19And then we need to pressure wash it, get it cleaned up.
28:22Sure, sure.
28:23Simple as that.
28:24How do we interact with them?
28:27I mean, how do you approach them?
28:28How do you behave?
28:30Well, it's very important you don't walk up on the side of one.
28:33That's where they're the most dangerous.
28:35They can swipe you with their tail, knock you down to their level, and that's when they can take you out.
28:40So, definitely stay in front.
28:43They're, for the most part, slow on land, so there shouldn't be any problems.
28:47No, I wouldn't see what could go on.
28:48Give you an idea of what they are capable of, so you will respect them.
28:51Last time we were moving a Nile crocodile into here, which is that little guy over there.
28:57Yeah.
28:57He grabbed a hold of this fence here, this steel, death rolled, and twisted it up like it was a rubber band.
29:04So, you want to stay away from those jaws.
29:08I sure do.
29:08I sure do.
29:13Coming up.
29:14Yeah.
29:15Chaos and the crocodile pond.
29:18We're losing our ground.
29:19Look, I'm really not sure what to do.
29:23Woo!
29:30You ready to go?
29:31I'm just going to follow you.
29:32All right, let's do it.
29:33The whole thing seems ill-advised, but...
29:40So, what I'm going to do is give you this big pole and hook.
29:49All right.
29:49And we need to see, first of all, if we can't get that alpha male up out of the water.
29:54This is his turf, and he doesn't want us in there.
29:57Which alpha male?
29:59The really big guy there.
30:00He's just about 12 feet long.
30:03He looks like a sofa.
30:05Now, an alligator's skull, the skin is directly attached to it.
30:11So, if you tap him on the head, he's not going to feel it.
30:13He has no nerve endings in his skull whatsoever.
30:17But they do have a sensitive part on the tip of their nose.
30:20So, what I like to do, if I'm trying to move him, is lightly tap him on the nose and see
30:26if he'll cooperate and move on out of the way for us.
30:28Go ahead.
30:29So, if you're the guy with the pole, just come on up.
30:34Like I said, this is somewhat safe for you, this range.
30:39Just in pole's length there.
30:41You want me to tap him on the nose?
30:42We can tap him on the nose and see if we can't get him out of the water here.
30:52It's a big animal.
30:53That's not tapping.
30:55You're not very intimidating to him.
30:57You need to be a little more forceful and direct.
31:03All right.
31:04Hey, gotta go.
31:06Out.
31:07Come on.
31:07Beat it.
31:08Beat it.
31:10Out.
31:11Out.
31:12See, I thought he would do that.
31:14That's what I would do if I were him.
31:15I would back up.
31:16Okay.
31:17What is that?
31:18That's a little turtle.
31:19Nothing to worry about.
31:20But we do have alligator snapping turtles in the water.
31:24Alligator snapping turtles have the second strongest jaw of any animal in the world.
31:28So, you need to watch out for them.
31:29Super.
31:30We might want to take out some water.
31:32Yeah, let's take some water out.
31:34Take some water out.
31:35Yeah, take some water out there.
31:37It would be a little easier for us.
31:39Mike, I got your back.
31:40I'll be behind you the whole time.
31:44I'm there for you.
31:52We're waiting for the water to drain.
31:53You want to see the big alligator snapping turtle?
31:55Yeah, sure.
31:57Thanks.
31:57What the heck's he doing?
32:03Watch that guy.
32:04Can I come toward you?
32:05Put your stick in the way there.
32:09What am I doing?
32:09We're surrounded by alligators.
32:13There you go.
32:14Whoa.
32:18All right.
32:18What the heck is this thing?
32:20This is an alligator snapping turtle.
32:23Weighs about 150 pounds.
32:24It's one of the largest freshwater turtles you could find anywhere.
32:30They have the second strongest jaw pressure bite of any animal in the world at 1,500 pounds
32:36per square inch.
32:38What you'll see, this guy opens his mouth.
32:42See that little lure on the bottom of his mouth?
32:44Looks like a little worm.
32:46Yeah.
32:46What he would do is he'd hide at the bottom of the water with his mouth open, wiggle that
32:52lure, fish comes inside, smack, that's it.
32:56He's got dinner.
32:58How old is this thing?
33:00We guesstimate him to be 150 years old at least.
33:05Yeah.
33:05The reason we can come up with that safe guess is recently they found alligator snapping
33:11turtles approximately this size with musket balls lodged in them from the Civil War.
33:16I'm just going to say, this guy was alive maybe when Abraham Lincoln was.
33:20Definitely.
33:23All right.
33:24So the pump has got all the water out that it can get out, right?
33:27It's just about there, yeah.
33:28We're good.
33:29Now what?
33:29Well, since the filter can't submerge in the water, we've got to move the filter into
33:35a bucket and manually scoop the water out.
33:38Of course.
33:39But to do that, we've got to be able to get in there.
33:42And getting in there means moving all those alligators out of the way.
33:45Okay.
33:45So are we all going in?
33:47I'm going to get the power washer.
33:50We'll get the power washer.
33:50All right.
33:51It's up to me and you.
33:52All right.
33:52And that's the one we've got to watch, right?
33:54Got to watch him.
33:55And this one with the mouth open also.
33:59All right.
34:01Okay.
34:02So we'll start by pushing them just like this.
34:11They don't like that.
34:12No, he doesn't.
34:21All right, buddy.
34:22Come on.
34:23Time to cooperate.
34:25Surrounded by dangerous things here.
34:27Come on, Sam.
34:39Little guy.
34:40All right.
34:41All right.
34:53Now we know where he is.
34:55All right.
34:56All right.
34:59We've got to get him.
35:00So it's going to take a little more pushing.
35:02Right.
35:07That's that 3,000 pounds per square inch I was talking about.
35:10It's cute the way their eyes roll back in their head, too, when they do that.
35:12Yeah.
35:13Yeah.
35:17We're losing our ground.
35:18I'm really not sure what to do.
35:21So I'm certain that this is the part where all the teeth are.
35:26Eventually, this should annoy him enough to where he walks up on his own.
35:29Or just eats us.
35:30That's right.
35:32There's one behind you there, just so you know.
35:33All right.
35:34This one's not cooperating.
35:36See, what he's doing is he's saying, this is my water.
35:38I'm not leaving.
35:40So when they do that, we've got to jump on them, tape their mouth up, and move them onto
35:45the bank ourselves.
35:46Maybe it's the wind or maybe it's the noise from the interstate, but it sounded like you
35:49said you need to jump them and tape their mouth shut.
35:53Yes, but you misunderstood one thing.
35:56I said we need to jump them and tape their mouth.
35:59That's me and you.
36:01I know what we means, but...
36:04Then I'll have Eric run up and tape his mouth up for us.
36:09The tool of choice.
36:11You're going to tape an alligator's mouth shut with electrical tape.
36:13This is our weapon.
36:18Sure.
36:20Coming up.
36:21He's going to be moving all the sludge down to the middle.
36:24Right.
36:24That's where you come in.
36:26I do important work in a pond full of poo.
36:28Like a true snake farmer.
36:30And I get a quick lesson in alligator wrestling.
36:33You can't wait.
36:34The minute I hit him, you need to be on top of me, all right?
36:37You ready?
36:37Yeah, yeah, yeah.
36:38Ah!
36:47So, we're about to wrangle an alligator, because Jared says it's the only way it
36:51to get this big guy out of the pond.
36:54All right.
36:55That's what we're going to do.
36:56Yeah, yeah, yeah.
36:56I'm going to jump first.
36:57You be right behind me, okay?
36:59The minute I land on him, you need to be right on top of me.
37:02Hold on a second.
37:02Hold on, man.
37:03I got like $20.25 from my snake adventure.
37:06Here, take all that.
37:09Ah!
37:10So rude.
37:12I need your shirt.
37:13My shirt?
37:14Just do it.
37:15Why does it have to be Mike's shirt?
37:17Because I'm busy.
37:21All right, you got it?
37:22All right.
37:23You can't wait.
37:24The minute I hit him, you need to be on top of me, all right?
37:27You ready?
37:27Yeah, yeah, yeah.
37:31All right, hold on.
37:32Put his mouth down.
37:36Right behind his nostrils.
37:37Why is my shirt off, and why am I lying on another man who's lying on an alligator?
37:46I'm not liking it any more than you are.
37:48I promise.
37:51All right.
37:53Now what we're going to do is I'm going to slide off to my left.
37:55Yeah.
37:56I'm going to pick up his head.
37:57Uh-huh.
37:57You're going to help me pick up his body, and we're going to move him onto the bank.
38:00You ready?
38:00Yeah.
38:02One.
38:03One.
38:03All right.
38:12Losing his blindfold.
38:13He's kicking me in the testicles.
38:15Is that bad?
38:21Great.
38:21Good.
38:22Good.
38:22That's good.
38:23That's good.
38:25All right.
38:26You ready?
38:26Yeah.
38:27And down.
38:28Noah's mouth's taped, his tail still can whip you pretty hard.
38:32Uh-huh.
38:33So we've got to be careful when we get up.
38:34So you ready?
38:35Right.
38:35One, two, three.
38:40What happened here?
38:42I don't know.
38:44Somewhere in the excitement got a little cut.
38:46Can I have my shirt back?
38:47So the alligators are where they're supposed to be.
38:53The turtles, however?
38:55They got to go, too.
38:56All right.
38:56Those are still dangerous.
38:57We don't want them in there while we're working.
38:59Go ahead and grab one so I can watch how you do it.
39:01All righty.
39:05You want to get right behind their shell here.
39:07Yeah.
39:08Make sure you know where the head is.
39:10Sure.
39:10Like this guy, his head's submerged.
39:12You can't really tell where it's at.
39:14Yeah.
39:14Okay, now I saw his head come up.
39:18That's the safe place to grab them.
39:20Okay.
39:20Right behind the head.
39:21They can't stick their head in like most turtles.
39:23Right.
39:23Then grab them behind the shell right here.
39:25Got it.
39:26And you're good to go.
39:27Let's go.
39:35Excuse me.
39:39In the wild, alligator snappers eat just about anything.
39:43Fish, mussels, snakes, small alligators,
39:46other turtles, even fruit and nuts.
39:48Just your basic reptilian gourmet.
39:52Good.
39:53Turtle poo.
39:54I was missing that.
39:58There we go.
39:59So what's the basic job?
40:05All right.
40:06Well, while he's pressure washing,
40:07he's going to be moving all the sludge down to the middle.
40:10Right.
40:11That's where you come in.
40:12Yeah.
40:13Since the filter won't submerge all the way into the water,
40:16we need to manually scoop buckets of water into the filter.
40:20Sure.
40:22Buckets of water into the filter.
40:23All right, Bert.
40:24All right.
40:26What's going to happen?
40:29Go ahead and scoop some water in here.
40:33Fill it up.
40:36Got it.
40:37Now, once a vacuum's created,
40:39it's going to start pumping.
40:41You need to keep up with it.
40:42Got it.
40:43All right.
40:46There it goes.
40:47All right.
40:48Now,
40:48you were behind.
40:52So now we've got to create the vacuum again.
40:55Keep it up.
40:56You're going to have to go faster.
40:57Oh, yeah.
41:00Faster than that, Mike.
41:03There we go.
41:07That's it.
41:11Like a true snake farmer.
41:13I'm going to save my back for another job.
41:23All right.
41:24It's been fun.
41:25Eric, thanks.
41:28Well, I'm covered with alligator crap.
41:31How does such a thing happen?
41:33Well, you start by driving down I-35.
41:34You see a sign that says snake farm.
41:36You see another sign that promises an experience.
41:38You see another sign that says closed.
41:40You're going anyway.
41:42A python poops on you.
41:43Rattlesnakes try and bite you.
41:45Next thing you know,
41:46you're half naked,
41:46lying on top of that guy,
41:48wrestling a giant lizard.
41:50Just another day in Texas.
41:58So, whether you're an invertebrate
42:00or a guy with a bad vertebrae,
42:03I recommend the snake farm.
42:05Go ahead, Dara.
42:07Oh.
42:08Oh, God.
42:10Well, we're pretty much at the end of our rope here
42:17with the whole dirty job idea thing.
42:19You've got one.
42:21Discovery.com forward slash dirty jobs.
42:26You'll really get my goat.
42:34Barsky.
42:35Barsky.
42:35I like it.
42:36I will call that snake Barsky
42:37because it was heavier than I thought
42:39and it moved slower than I expected.
42:43Screw that.
42:43I'm just going over.
42:45I don't need that, man.
42:46That's no way to end.
42:48That's no way to end
42:48a perfectly average career.
42:49I'm just going over.
42:53Okay, just look down for me.
42:56Oh, that's what I'm talking about.
42:59All right.
43:01Oh, that's good.
