00:00Uganda is on the verge of hosting over 2 million refugees by the end of the year as the number of asylum seekers continue to pour in through its borders from neighboring countries, according to the United Nations Refugee Agency, UNHCR.
00:15The East African country currently hosts 1.93 million refugees mainly from neighboring countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan and South Sudan.
00:26We used to live in Khatoum but we moved to Darfur because of the war. I am with my daughters. My husband passed away. We have been here for three months. We have nothing, no money. The children are not in school and they started getting sick. The situation here is really difficult.
00:42Since the start of 2025, an average of 600 people per day have arrived in the country. As resources continue to be stretched, refugees are being forced to make life-altering choices to survive, including dropping out of schools.
00:53I'm in Kiryondongo in Uganda where we have seen an increase of arrivals in the past months. The situation has become untenable. We simply don't have the resources for the basic needs, whether it's water, whether it's shelter. I'm seeing children that are malnourished. I'm seeing women that are desperate, having arrived here with almost nothing.
01:15Currently, Uganda's refugee response is only 25 percent funded. Uganda's progressive refugee policy allows refugees to leave, work and access public services, but funding shortfalls are drastically impacting aid delivery and threaten to endure years of progress.
01:29The cost of addressing the needs of one refugee in Uganda is estimated approximately at $16 per month in 2025.
01:35The cost of addressing the cost of addressing the need for a new refugee in Uganda is probably one of us.
