00:00Right back at it here on the early line, Sports Grid Network, Sirius XM Channel 159, Joe Winnery
00:05and Donnie Wrightside here getting some NFL talking. Why? Because we have week number one
00:09of the preseason and some quarterback competitions are still to be determined right now. And we got
00:15to focus on the Colts because Adam Schefter sends a tweet out yesterday here, Joe. Colts first
00:19unofficial depth chart here of the season lists their quarterback position like this, Daniel Jones
00:25or Anthony Richardson, which we see at times, which means one and one A. These two guys are
00:30going to fight it out. And depending on what happens in practices in the preseason, who's
00:33going to be that week number one quarterback. But the issue that I have with this is the
00:37changing of the odds market, which is heavily favored right now on Anthony Richardson. And
00:42I do agree with that. Daniel Jones is not your future quarterback and you just want some
00:46closure if not to see what Anthony Richardson is about. Because if Richardson is really bad
00:50finally, we have to play him another season. That's it. It's going to be a wrap. We'll release
00:54him and we'll try to get our future quarterback maybe in the draft or via trade in the next
00:58year. Playing Daniel Jones doesn't do a lot for me at this point. But we were also led
01:02to believe early in the summer, like we had a debilitating shoulder injury once again
01:06for Anthony Richardson. We didn't know when he was going to throw the football. A few weeks
01:09go by. He's back seemingly fine at this point. So he does to me, Joe, had the inside track.
01:14But how do you operate and look at the Indianapolis Colts quarterback room right now and say,
01:19who's going to be that starter? Listen, this is exactly what happens, Donnie,
01:26when you draft a guy that has all of what? One year worth of college football experience as a
01:32starter in Florida. And we knew he had all the athletic ability in the world. But half the time,
01:38we also knew that he is a he's certainly going to be an injury liability because of the way he plays
01:44the game. And above the shoulders, was this really a guy after last year that you go,
01:50this is the leader of our clubhouse here. This is the leader of our team, the face of the franchise.
01:55Like, yeah, again, you forced him into this role when he wasn't ready for it. And now you're trying,
02:01you're basically trying to figure out whether or not you can throw him out there to the wolves,
02:06let him fail. And then we can say, hey, we gave him every opportunity to succeed. No, you didn't.
02:10You set him up to fail because you were in such a rush to throw him out under center in his first
02:15year. And he wasn't ready for it, Donnie. It's as simple as that.
02:19You know, it's going to be interesting to watch this play out too, Joe. Week number one,
02:23they're at home against the Miami Dolphins. I don't think we've got one good bit of, you know,
02:27feel good vibes out of Dolphins camp. And when you're at home, week number one,
02:31the expectations, you're probably going to win that game. You should win that game.
02:33Let's just say the Colts win that. Week number two, they are at home again. It's still hard to win on
02:37the road specifically early in the season. And the Denver Broncos come to town. Now the Broncos,
02:41we could probably agree are the better team, but then week number three, Joe, you're on the road at
02:46the Tennessee Titans week four at the Rams. You can win that Titans game. You probably lose to the
02:50Rams, but then you come back home and play the Vegas Raiders. This schedule is not that daunting
02:55in the month of September. So whoever gets that leg up really is like, Hey man, I want to start
02:59week number one. That's a legitimate chance for a victory. Now, granted, if it was against the Eagles,
03:04so let's just say the Kansas city chiefs, the Buffalo bills or the Ravens, like, Hey Daniel,
03:06you take game number one, get blown up. I'll be certainly the starting game number two. When
03:10let's just say we take on the Miami Dolphins. So these guys are looking at this as a great
03:14opportunity to get some wins early and it's still some confidence in the franchise. But if we are
03:19looking at this and if it is a neck and neck rates, which they're saying, do we actually believe
03:23that? Cause I still want to go back to, they brought Daniel Jones as a veteran presence in case
03:29we had to hit the eject button. At least we have somebody who's competent, who's been in the NFL,
03:33not going to embarrass us. And it's hopefully going to be there on a week to week basis.
03:37I would be so stunned, Joe, if week number one, non-injury, Daniel Jones is the quarterback,
03:43then actually just question what the franchise is actually doing at that point.
03:47Well, they're not setting them up for success. I mean, that's the bottom line. There is nothing
03:53that we saw. Does he have talent? Is he the best athlete that we have seen? Yeah, he's all of those
04:00things, but you got to be more than that. If you're going to be a starting franchise quarterback
04:05in the NFL. And I never thought he was ready coming out of Florida. I thought it was ridiculous that
04:11they didn't, they threw him in there like the way they did and set them up. And then we got a guy
04:15walking off the field, taking plays off. Cause he's tired. Like I just, how is this playing in the
04:21locker room? Donnie, is this really a leader among men, which is what you need in that locker room?
04:26Or is he just a sacrificial lamb going, you know what? The reason we brought Daniel Jones is,
04:31is because as soon as he either gets hurt or throws four interceptions, we can, then we can
04:37bring in Daniel Jones and be good to go. I don't see how this ends well for, for Richardson at all
04:43with this team. And also it's, it's not as if you look at the Colts as it's a barren wasteland of
04:49talent. Their defense is decent. They have a good offensive line. One of the better running backs in
04:53football. You got out in the draft and signed, who I thought was probably the best tight end in
04:57college football last year in Warren at a Penn state. You have legitimate wide receivers. There's
05:01no reason. And also Shane Steichen to me is a very good offensive coordinator. He just hasn't had that
05:05quarterback, which is what you need to win in the NFL. So it's not as if, you know, the barren desert,
05:10as you just said, you start week one, like, what do you want me to do with this team? Like,
05:13there's no weapons. There's nobody to throw to. What do you want me to do here? There's plenty of
05:17weapons here to have a good offense enough to move the football effectively here. And it's just up to the
05:21players, but I got to be honest. It just feels like the Colts season comes down to this play
05:26Anthony Richardson as much as you can. You know, he's not going to be good, but at least next
05:30off season, Joe, you know exactly what to do. Like, is there any thought process in your mind?
05:34Like Anthony Richardson starts and by week 10, you're like, wow, he's one of the best quarterbacks
05:39in the NFL. Like that doesn't even cross my mind, which is what a first round draft pick should
05:43actually be when he plays in the NFL. Yeah. The only thing that crosses my mind is will he be
05:50healthy by week three? That's the only thing that questions my mind. Will he be healthy? Because
05:55he, he doesn't play the position smart enough to be a starting quarterback yet. It's one thing if
06:02you're bringing this guy off the bench, but you didn't draft him in the third round. You drafted
06:06him with your first pick Donnie and you moved up to go get him. So here's the problem. Now the
06:12organization from the top down has a mandate in order to get this kid on the field as much as possible
06:19here. And let's see what we have because if he's not the answer, we got to move on. You're not
06:24giving the guy a chance to actually succeed. And I think that's the biggest problem I have with it
06:29here. Donnie is I don't think he's ready to be a starting quarterback in the NFL.
06:33And here's where you get yourself in trouble. Like usually Joe, it's like, Hey man,
06:36drifted this guy late third round. What a project. He is going to be sensational if it works out,
06:40but if not, it's not a big deal. We burned a third round pick. You don't like it, but you can live
06:44with it. Round number one, pick number four. That can't be a project that can't be. He's going to be
06:49ready in five years. Like even dating us back like to the 1990s, like Steve McNair comes out of Alcorn
06:53state. He was a much more accomplished pastor than Anthony Richardson, but they're like, okay,
06:57he's more of a project. Let's sit him down. Let's get him in a good organization. Steve Fisher's the
07:00coach. We'll take it slow and look how it worked out. He had a great career in the NFL. Anthony
07:05Richardson was throwing up like, Hey kid, we know you can't pass, but you're electric. And I have an
07:08ownership group and a general manager that just wants to see you out there. Let's see what we can do.
07:11And it hasn't worked out in any way, shape or form. Maybe it does this year. We're just not
07:15counting on it. How about the Cleveland Browns locker room and their quarterback situation?
07:19Joe and Donnie, we're getting to that next. We're not even at the first preseason game for the
07:24majority of the NFL teams. And we are having quarterback controversies in a lot of spots
07:28here. Not even a controversy, Joe Ranieri on like, who's going to be the starter, but who's going to be
07:33number two, three, four, five, or be traded or cut from different teams and in different
07:38environments. We're talking right now about the Cleveland Browns. And we have a clip
07:41here of Shador Sanders talking about prime time here in Cleveland.
07:45Like, I look, I look at it at my own point of view. Like, um, I don't want him coming
07:52to see me right now because I want to, I want to get to where I want to go then for him to see me.
08:00I don't want him to come and see me, you know, get a couple reps and, you know,
08:03he's cheering like a good dad. Like, nah, you can't be proud of me right now. I got to get to
08:07where I'm going. And I know it's a lot I got to do to get there. So it's kind of like,
08:12I just want everything that I'm doing is just like focus on this time. And I don't want no
08:16distractions because we know out of media, we know how everybody will take it and take away
08:21from the team, uh, just from him being my own dad showing up. So, you know, it's a gift and a curse
08:27at the same time. Is he also saying Joe Ranieri? Well, sooner or later, my dad's probably gonna be
08:33the head coach after we win three games this year and he'll take over the Cleveland Browns. Then I
08:37want my dad to come see me play because I'll be the starting quarterback here. Look, Shador Sanders
08:41is a good football player. Was a very good high school football player. Had a lot of success in
08:45college, but the wavering constraints of where he was supposed to go and what his talent actually
08:50measures up in the NFL. There's a lot of baggage around Shador. He's not a bad kid at all.
08:54We're not saying that, but just the coming from where he came from in Colorado, your father's
08:58prime time. He's always chiming in. And I think he's trying to say like, Hey dad, don't need you
09:02here in camp yet. Let me try to earn my stripes without you first. See if that happens.
09:09Great. Uh, in theory. Right. But I mean, this is another one of these situations and I, and I,
09:15it's unfortunate for Shador, right? Cause you, you know, you can pick your friends. You can't pick
09:20your family, right? Donnie. Uh, your father is one of the most well-known, uh, one of the greatest
09:25football players to ever step on the field, two way athletes. And you had to grow up living in that
09:31shadow your entire life. That's not his fault, but he also, along with that has never really had to
09:37experience any sort of failure. Donnie, like there's never really been a situation where this
09:44is Dion's kid and he's going to be there. And he's the starter here is the starter there.
09:48This is kind of, this is a very important spring for him because this is going to test him. And it's
09:54going to tell us a lot about him. Nobody is handing you anything because of who you are and who your
09:59father is. You're going to have to go out and earn it. I don't know that he's ever had to do that to
10:04this point in his life here, Donnie. So we're going to learn a little something about Shador Sanders
10:08here. And if it means that it's better without his dad at camp, and that's what he's saying here,
10:13I agree. Then do what you got to do to take care of you, because this might be the first time where
10:17dad can't bail you out here right now. No, certainly. And he could, dad also couldn't
10:22influence where he went from that draft position of, Hey, I know exactly where my kid wants to go.
10:27Meaning that he probably thought he had a choice of top five teams here in the first round that he
10:31could just measure and say, this is where he'd fit in perfectly. So a little humble pie for the kid.
10:35But again, everybody starts with that clean slate. It is true. Once you get
10:38to camp in a certain direction, we don't care where you were drafted. You outperformed somebody,
10:42you're going to be on that football field. Now, again, there are extending waiting circumstances
10:45where he drafts a quarterback number three overall. Yeah. They're going to try him out for
10:48the next three to four years, even if he's not as good as anybody on that roster. But from Shador's
10:52perspective, that's probably the case. Tyler Huntley, Shador Sanders, Dylan Gabriel, Joe Flacco,
10:57Kenny Pickett, Deshaun Watson. There's a lot of names on that list. Not a lot of good names on that list.
11:01So he can earn a job on this football team. Do you think there's a chance though, Joe? Honestly,
11:06even if he doesn't get injured, we play this up right up to August 31st. And it's like, well,
11:12we just had to make a decision as Cleveland to cut Shador Sanders loose. Is there any chance he
11:16gets cut? Or do you think he definitely makes this Cleveland football team? All of depends on him.
11:22Is he a good teammate? Is he making progress? Is he a distraction? You know, you are a what? A fifth
11:31round pick, Donnie. For the Browns at this point, they don't care that you're Shador Sanders. You're
11:37a fifth round pick. The minute you become a problem, it's a business decision, right? Okay,
11:44see you later. Bye-bye. Be somebody else's problem. They're going to give him every chance
11:48to succeed. But if he does get cut, it's simply because there's something else going on that's
11:55it's just not worth you being around as a fifth round pick to be that kind of distraction.
12:00We've asked this question multiple times, Joe. I'm going to ask you this again.
12:03Does Shador Sanders, if I listed a total of a half of a game to the over under starts for the
12:09Cleveland Browns this year in 2025, are you going over the half game? Are you going under,
12:14which means he doesn't start?
12:16I, I would say over the kid has got all the talent in the world. It's not as talent. I'm worried
12:21about it. It's above the shoulders. I'm worried about here, Donnie. I would say over this team's
12:27going to stink. So if Joe Flacco starting games in week 15, I mean, come on now, you got to try
12:32every one of those quarterbacks out just to see if they can be a franchise. And if not back into the
12:36draft, you go full slate of NFL preseason week. Number one starts on Thursday night. And maybe in
12:44Philadelphia, when Cincinnati shows up, could we hang another banner there? Can we show the trophy
12:47around? I mean, some people just ask and they can't get enough of this Lombardi trophy. But before we
12:51get there, there are some hotter topics to deal with. I'm Donnie right side. He is Joe
12:55and here and we bring in the one, the only, the host of game time decisions. It's Kevin
12:59Walsh. Interesting. There's a guy in the middle chair right now today. Kevin has a few to be
13:04on the early line. I feel good. I think you like accidentally stumbled into your nicest
13:09intro of me ever. So I don't want to say too much. I just want to want to bask in that for as
13:16long as I can. There you go out and about and away we go. Kevin's here ready to talk some
13:21action and always doesn't start with the Dallas Cowboys. No success on the field in championships
13:26in the mid 1990s. The salary cap implication of the 1990s really shattered the Dallas Cowboys where
13:31they used to go out, Kevin, and just pay everybody. You can't do that now. So you have to operate
13:35smarter. Yes, you make more money than any other team, but there are spending constraints that you
13:40must go along with in the NFL. We saw Jerry Jones based on camera saying, I can't pay these guys what
13:45they want because then we can't feel the rest of the team. Not understanding who to pay them two years
13:49ago with much cheaper price point and a lower salary cap and they could have used that elsewhere.
13:53Give me an update on what you're finding out or at least what you're looking at from Micah Parsons,
13:57Jerry Jones, and the Dallas Cowboys. So it is remarkable that Micah Parsons requested a trade
14:05and there is not a person alive who thinks he will be traded. We yesterday on game time, we spoke to
14:13Joseph Hoyt who covers the Cowboys for the Dallas Morning News and I even was like, I almost kind
14:20of had to keep pressing it and he was great and I appreciated it. So I was like, but if you had to
14:24pretend there was a world he was going to be traded or is there a return? Are there teams that make
14:31sense? Has anybody even faked the effort to come up with the, here are the six teams that you trade
14:37for Micah Parsons? So this whole situation feels ridiculous. He, I no longer want to be a Cowboy,
14:44but he shows up in a Cowboys Jersey to every single practice. Like, can you at least just put the Penn
14:51State hoodie on instead or, or, or something? So it's just the contract negotiations that they're losing
15:01my interest. I feel as the day goes on, I need someone to get traded. I, here's the thing.
15:07I understand that the NFL is King and they do everything right. In the NBA, when you request
15:12a trade, you get traded. So either James Harden needs to take up being an NFL agent, or we need
15:18to stop putting out the term trade request in the NFL when nobody gets traded.
15:24And he wasn't even original about it because he was second. McLaurin had said it the day prior
15:30that all of a sudden now he wants to be traded. But tell me, how is this any different than what we
15:36got with CD lamb last year? Dak Prescott the year prior. I'll go back to Zeke Elliott. This is how
15:43he operates. The old man. This is what he does. He's going to wait until the 23rd hour. And then
15:49he's going to step in and be like, see, I told you not to lose any sleep with it. It's all done.
15:54It's just par for the course for him. Isn't it?
15:55So mostly, and I almost think that that's maybe why he started to take shots at Micah because he's
16:02like, Oh, everybody's onto my game. Nobody's interested in me slow playing it anymore. So
16:07now I need to insult Micah Parsons and I might as well throw Dak under the bus anyway. Cause I don't
16:12really like Dak Prescott is a seemingly that the Jerry Jones model. The remarkable thing is he will
16:20probably end up paying Parsons, but it's that he is costing this team money by doing this where he
16:29could get Dak for cheaper. He could get lamb for cheaper. He could get Parsons for cheaper.
16:33And then a roster that needs more than just three guys, right? Would then be able to add talent
16:40elsewhere. Parsons is going to again, likely be on this team. Now I think Parsons could miss a week
16:46or two of football. I think that's on the board, but nevertheless, when Parsons out there,
16:51it's going to be a bad defense. Forget what it's going to look like. If Parsons does actually miss
16:55some time. It's crazy. And by the way, when I was on yesterday with newswire and Joe and I talked
17:01about this on the early line, Kevin yesterday, nobody's going to trade for Micah Parsons. I don't
17:05love the guy, but nobody can, but okay, three first round picture. You got it. Uh, and also he's
17:08going to be the highest paid player, maybe in the history of the sport. Got that too. That's not
17:11happening. It's almost like he's so good. He cannot be traded. Kevin.
17:15No, they, they would trade for him in two seconds. The chargers would trade from the
17:19Patriots would trade for him. What are you talking about? Donnie? He's arguably the most
17:24value. Stop. Yeah. I don't know if it would be three ones. I think it might be two ones.
17:29And then, you know, some of those add on picks, but Donnie, he's arguably the most valuable
17:34non quarterback trade asset in the league. It would be what him, Aiden Hutchinson, Justin
17:42Jefferson. I mean, Parsons is right. Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis. Oh,
17:49gotta be careful. Gotta be careful. You gotta be who wait. So look, Donnie, again, like if
17:58you told me that the chargers had an opportunity to bring in Parsons, they're like, ah, we got
18:04to trade and pay. Nevermind. We'll keep sticking with 56 year old Khalil Mack. Well, then the
18:10chargers are poorly ran and he's in his prime. So I, this rare, this never happens. You're
18:16not, you know, you're not trading the guy 26 years old heading into his prime. You'll
18:20pay him for whatever, whatever he wants. And we all know it. The same camp you said about
18:25Buffalo though, who, and I feel barrel because cook has done everything right. He has said the
18:31right things. He's done the right things. He showed up at camp. He wasn't a distraction,
18:35but now we're getting ready to play preseason football. And he's like, how many more risks
18:41am I going to take before I actually get my contract? I don't blame them. And I still think
18:46it's going to get done. Do you? Yeah, I think so. James cook is in one of those. We're, we're
18:51in a pretty interesting spot with some of this NFL stuff. And usually I feel like you get contract
18:57standoffs and you could get me like a 50, 50 split of, you know, fans blaming the athlete.
19:04I feel like all the organizations are in the wrong now. It's pretty fun. Everyone's like,
19:08just pay him because nobody believes these guys aren't actually going to get paid. And if you're
19:14James cook, like we don't know sometimes if running backs are going to get the, you know,
19:19the follow-up contract. This is the first contract realistically that James cook is trying
19:23to secure. So he should be very strict in his asking and whether or not he is going to show up
19:30and the bills need James cook as a safety net. I think there's a chance that one of the trio
19:35of Kincaid Khalil Shakir or Keon Coleman could break out this year. One of them, right? I don't
19:43think all three of them that's ridiculous, but what they need then behind that is the safety net.
19:47That is James cook. Like, I think we, he did finish tied for the league lead and rushing touchdowns.
19:54And it's not because Josh stopped running them in himself. He still had 12 of his own. James
20:00cook had himself a fantastic season, an incredible playoff run, and the bills will be worse if he's
20:06not on that roster. And running backs are getting paid now. And also second time around like, Hey,
20:11Derek Henry, come on down. We're going to pay you. We'll pay again the next year. Same thing
20:14with Saquon Barkley and the Philadelphia Eagles, big deal. And also re-up this deal in the off season.
20:18He's just looking and say, Hey man, I'm up there with these guys. At least pay me what I'm worth
20:21here. Maybe not at that level, but more than what I'm currently getting at this point right now.
20:25Let's take a quick look here, Kevin, the Dallas Cowboys and the Buffalo bills with their schedules
20:29here impact. If Micah misses a couple of games impact, if cook misses a couple of games, any worries
20:34that they will. I really think Parsons could miss time because I think Jerry is enjoying this
20:42because he's crazy. And I think that he will be, he doesn't want to be the first to break and
20:50Parsons at least has that COVID year of experience from college where he chase, they sat out a full
20:59season and obviously never missed a beat. Those guys hit the ground running, you know, what, once
21:04they hit the NFL. So for Parsons, is he all that worried about not playing against Philadelphia? Like
21:10realistically for Parsons, it's actually the dream opening opponent, right? Like if you were to go
21:14out there week, number one, you're playing the Cleveland Browns, defense is flying around.
21:18You're like, ah, not what I was hoping for. Instead, ideally the Philadelphia Eagles show up week
21:23number one on their P's and Q's, hang 35 on the Dallas Cowboys. And then Parsons could be like, see,
21:29you better get this deal done. So I think Parsons is more likely to miss time than James Cook.
21:34Yeah. In the 1990s, Emmitt Smith missing the first two games of a season. They went 0-2 to open up.
21:39Emmitt Smith came back. They won a Super Bowl later on that season. Also, we've seen some crazy
21:43negotiations like Jim Irsay, the former owner of the Indianapolis Colts. Jonathan Taylor's never
21:48going to play for us again the next day. Man, this guy's unbelievable. Big contract. Can't wait to see
21:52back on the field. So things change on a day-to-day basis.
