00:00Mike Reese, hello!
00:01What's happening, fellas?
00:02Great practice out there today, right?
00:05Real action.
00:06Am I a prisoner to the present moment to say that that was the best buzz that we've had here since Brady was here?
00:13Yes, yes!
00:14Meaning, I am a prisoner, or like, I'm accurate?
00:16No, you're accurate. We commented on it earlier.
00:18That was fantastic.
00:19I said it felt like things are back.
00:21The crowd is back, the energy is back, the attitude, the...
00:25Page is turned.
00:26Yeah, it feels like the old days a little bit today here.
00:28It was packed, you know, when you've got to fill up the ramp with fans, and you have tens of thousands of people here.
00:34I don't know exactly how many, but it was a lot.
00:36And they were into it, and they were engaged, and booing, and cheering, and it was fun.
00:41It was a good time down there today.
00:42Felt like the old days.
00:44The building should be happy.
00:45Right?
00:45And Bon Jovi, Amendola, Tatum.
00:48Like, it felt big.
00:50It felt big here.
00:50You got Vrabel jumping in the scrum, coming out with the cut.
00:54Just a lot of stuff to watch, too, I would say.
00:58As positive as I come with that, I would like to have seen him end stronger with the top offense.
01:06I thought Drake had pop in the end zone on that final.
01:10They were doing ball at the 25 with 45 seconds left.
01:16Situation and the practice.
01:17And they got it down to the nine-yard line, and I thought Drake had pop open.
01:23Good separation in the end zone.
01:25And he went to go throw it to him, and Bobby Wagner made a nice play.
01:29The linebacker for Washington tipped it, and it was intercepted in the end zone.
01:34And so I thought as, like, some good, some not so good, felt like that was, like, you would have liked to have seen that top offense finish with the exclamation mark.
01:42But overall, I think both teams come off the field, and they're pumped.
01:46Like, they both got better.
01:48Didn't look like there were any major player injuries.
01:51And I think for Vrabel, the mentality that he's trying to instill in the team, he set the tone himself by jumping in there.
02:00Our big takeaway today was the offense bounce back.
02:02It was a bounce back day for them, in our mind.
02:03I felt that way.
02:04Like, right off the bat, you know, Drake was decisive getting the ball out.
02:08Pop Douglas.
02:09It's funny, though.
02:10I tweet, you know, after the first sequence, Beatle, like, Drake dealing, pop, pop, and then pop drops one.
02:18I'm like, I got to not tweet until it's over.
02:20You know, because I feel like I jinxed him.
02:22No, no, I disagree with that.
02:24Really?
02:24Yeah, I think it's in the moment.
02:25I think people are really hungry for the up-to-the-minute, in-the-moment coverage of this.
02:31If they can't make it here, they want those updates on Twitter.
02:33So I think you're right to send that out.
02:35And then you update that, oh, and now pop, drop one.
02:39So I think you were doing the right thing.
02:40These are the hardest practices to report on.
02:43So much to see, right?
02:44Hard to have your eyes on everything.
02:46And so for me, Tim, I, like, just decided, I'm like, I'm just going to watch the offense today.
02:51Drake, I wanted to see the protection, and I just wanted to be able to drill down.
02:54I didn't see much of the defense other than when it was just the full team.
02:59So let's give the first-team defense on the one sequence that I watched at the end of practice.
03:05Ball in the 25.
03:06Washington's top offense, Jaden Daniels, out there, and they stopped him.
03:10Double-A, Alex Austin, on a fourth-and-seven pass to the back left corner of the end zone.
03:16Bats it away.
03:17And so first-team defense, where maybe they struggled at times a little bit,
03:23they finished with the exclamation mark.
03:25Flip it maybe for the offense.
03:27Stephon Diggs, not at the start of practice, then was there for seven-on-sevens.
03:30Do you think they're just kind of managing him?
03:32What do you make of that situation today?
03:33Well, I was interested in, I didn't know if he was on the lower field, you know, working out.
03:38So I don't know, Tim.
03:39I would judge based on what we saw.
03:41They were managing him, maybe keep him out of some of the full 11-on-11 stuff
03:46and let him work the seven-on-seven.
03:48But he wasn't on 11-on-11 at the end.
03:50So that's something I've got to dig a little bit on and find out how they're managing him.
03:54I would say of the receivers today, who impressed me the most,
03:59Pop would be probably at the top of the list, Mack Hollins.
04:02Mack Hollins.
04:02With a big touchdown catch.
04:04I thought Kyle Williams had a catch, and so Diggs would be a little lower on the list.
04:08Felt like Will Campbell had a good day in protection.
04:10I thought so.
04:11I didn't think it was a jailbreak, right?
04:13Like, you're looking for, like, was it not competitive?
04:17And again, I don't know if I'm misremembering, but when the Eagles were in here,
04:21there were times you were watching and you were like, oh, man.
04:23Oh, it was a mismatch.
04:24We looked it up.
04:24They had 15 sacks that day.
04:2714 completions.
04:28Was that Mike's tweet that we had read?
04:29Yes.
04:30We had read your coverage from the Eagles practice.
04:33It was a disaster.
04:33You had them down for 15.
04:34Thanks for doing that.
04:35They had given up 15 sacks.
04:37I was curious.
04:38You had written at the time, they gave up 15 sacks over the course of the practice.
04:42They completed 14 passes.
04:44So that was not today.
04:45No.
04:46It was much more competitive.
04:48Mike, I thought they looked like they belonged on the field
04:51and they were competing with a team that's coming off a run to the NFC title game.
04:54I agree.
04:55I agree with that.
04:56To me, the most encouraging day of practice this team has had all of the summer.
04:59I agree.
05:00Perfect timing.
05:00Yep.
05:01Then you head out to Minnesota next week.
05:03You try and cap it off.
05:04But I just think the guys we talk about, who's got the most pressure,
05:07whether it's the owner, whether it's the head coach, the offense coordinator,
05:10or the quarterback, that's a good day out there for the head coach,
05:13the offense coordinator, and the quarterback.
05:15I know he wasn't perfect, but he looked like he's in command.
05:19That's the biggest thing I'd take from Drake.
05:21And I know he had to turn over Friday night in the in-house scrimmage.
05:24But he's been really good at taking care of the ball.
05:26And he had to tip today.
05:27Yep.
05:27So that's three total.
05:29But I agree.
05:30And I would defer to you, though.
05:31You played quarterback.
05:32But what I see when I watch is it's decisive.
05:36The ball's out.
05:37It's like he's confident in that he knows where to go before the ball snapped
05:43based on the McDaniels offense.
05:45So it's not a lot of – and, again, I don't want to misremember last year,
05:50but it felt like last year it was more progressing through
05:55and maybe holding on to the ball longer and then running if nothing was there.
05:59Just go to MTAs and we threw four picks.
06:01First practice.
06:02Like, that is James.
06:05How about Booty?
06:06Coming on.
06:07Coming on.
06:08He's making a scene.
06:09Oh, no doubt.
06:10So receiver-wise, when Diggs wasn't there at the start, it was interesting to me.
06:15I wrote in my notes that so without Diggs, who's always been one of the top three guys,
06:19it was Booty, Pop, and Kyle Williams as the top three.
06:26And then Mack Hollins was the fourth guy.
06:29And so Javon Baker getting a little more run this week after making some plays.
06:34So Booty, he's in.
06:37Do you still believe they could have seven receivers on this roster?
06:39I do.
06:40Wow.
06:41I know.
06:41That's a lot.
06:42Because I only see two tight ends.
06:44So I figure, to me, it's Hunter Henry Austin.
06:46Don't you have to keep three, though?
06:47So is, I'm assuming with that, Kendrick Bourne is one of your seven.
06:52So I think he could be attractive to others in a trade scenario.
06:58Wow.
06:59So that would mean you have Baker making the team?
07:02Well, let's go through it.
07:03Let's do it next.
07:04Want to do that?
07:05Yeah.
07:05I just noticed a moment ago that Mike has this on the table.
07:08Yep.
07:09Which I cannot wait to hear about.
07:11Yep.
07:11Okay.
07:12I'm going to hold it like this.
07:13We did that last night.
07:14Yeah.
07:15I'm going to.
07:16We're going to get to this drumstick on the table as well.
07:18Don't touch the drumstick.
07:19Actual drumstick for playing drums.
07:21We can get to that with Mike Reese coming up next.
07:23Mike Reese of ESPN is with us.
07:26And we were talking about receivers.
07:29Yeah.
07:29Prior to the break.
07:31And you've said from the jump, you think seven receivers is in play for this team.
07:36Yes.
07:37I view it as a six receiver situation.
07:40You're probably right.
07:40And I think they should keep six.
07:41I think that's plenty.
07:43Yes.
07:43I think that's standard practice.
07:45And I would say it's four guys competing for the last spot.
07:50And I'm just saying they're all competing, even though I think some are eliminated already.
07:55Yep.
07:55But it would be Baker, Polk, Bourne, and Chisholm.
08:00Yep.
08:00Fighting for slot number six.
08:02I think based on the way they've played in camp, it would go to Baker.
08:05Baker's had the best camp out of those guys.
08:07Yep.
08:07I would say the easiest guys to get rid of are Polk and Chisholm.
08:12And I would say if Kendrick Bourne is healthy, they're likely going to lean in his direction and keep him.
08:17So I think that's fair.
08:20And I think Kendrick deserves to be on a 53-man roster, whether it's here or somewhere else.
08:26The only thing I would say on that Beatle is sometimes you get down to the sixth receiver and you're saying,
08:32if he's not like the sixth receiver is going to be active on game day, he's got to play in the kicking game.
08:38Kendrick doesn't.
08:39So I wonder if that potentially tilts the needle toward Baker, who could be a kickoff returner.
08:47And I'm not saying they would.
08:49Chisholm, again, you'd probably be doing that if you kept him more for the future.
08:53You don't want to expose him to possibly lose him because you see potential for the future.
08:58Right now, Bourne more valuable to you, but in the future, maybe Chisholm is.
09:02So that would be the thought process with him.
09:04And Polk, just right now, it would only be based on draft status from what I see.
09:09There have been a few flashes on the field, but I would say nothing compared to the other three that would make you feel convicted to say he would be deserving of that sixth spot.
09:20It's just a real shame that your second-round picks, your receivers that you picked in the second round, you know, in the last, what, decade, are not going to make the football team.
09:28Like, that's a bad miss.
09:31Every time you start talking about Polk sticking around, I get nervous because Tyquan Thornton stayed here four years.
09:38Four years that guy stood here.
09:39Yeah.
09:40Stayed here.
09:40Really good play.
09:41Remarkable waste of time.
09:43What's that?
09:44I said just a remarkable waste of time.
09:46Stunning.
09:47I'm not saying that jokingly.
09:48I'm saying how much time did this team invest in that player trying to make him what they thought he should be or what they had drafted him for?
09:57What a waste of time.
09:59Because he can run.
09:59That feels like such a waste.
10:00I play with Tony Simmons.
10:01Like, the guy could run.
10:02But then you put pads on guys, and it's different.
10:04And this is going to be the tough thing.
10:06Like, when you get down to your 53 and they're all sitting in that conference room, who's going to be arguing for Polk?
10:12Probably front office.
10:13It's their pick.
10:14No.
10:15Those guys will stand up for him.
10:16And it's going to be a decision.
10:17And Vrabel's going to have to make that.
10:19We've got to do what's right for the football team.
10:21Do you think Josh really wants to play him if he can't line up, can't catch the ball, can't get open?
10:26No.
10:27And the Baker one is interesting to me.
10:30So today at practice, he caught a touchdown pass, and he's caught quite a few the last couple days.
10:35Credit to him.
10:36But after the play, I don't know if you guys talked about this, he takes the ball, and he literally launches it up in the air.
10:43And my first reaction was, why would you do that?
10:47And the officials actually that are here, Sean Hockley's crew, didn't throw a penalty on it, which I think the coaches probably would like them to do that.
10:57Because if the whole point of having them here is to simulate a game situation, teachable moments.
11:04And so I think there's still an aspect with Baker on that stuff.
11:08The plays, the talent is starting to come out a little bit, but there's still some of those moments.
11:12That was one of those act like you've been there before type of things when he launched the football.
11:17I also did think, across my mind, Mike, that Vrabel has been on these guys about celebrating, right?
11:25Celebrate success on the field.
11:27And he's been preaching that, and I wonder if that was part.
11:31I saw that, and I was like, is that part of what they're preaching?
11:34Like, go nuts and celebrate and be over the top?
11:37No, that's individual.
11:38It's celebrate with your teammates.
11:40And I've heard the audio.
11:41Hey, and I remember him yelling, Drake, get down there.
11:43That's a big play.
11:44Go celebrate with your teammates.
11:45Like, that's what you're trying to preach.
11:49Yeah.
11:49So we'll see.
11:50We'll see how that goes.
11:51But I thought it was a nice bounce-back day.
11:54Things are shaping up for this team.
11:56We had a chance to talk to Christian Barr more earlier.
11:58Mike, he looks really good, doesn't he?
12:00So that's interesting, Beto.
12:02I haven't had a chance to see him.
12:03Oh, I mean just physically.
12:05Oh, physically he looks good.
12:06Yeah.
12:08Frankly, in the one-on-one drills, I was expecting more results, like when I'm watching him against the Patriots offensive linemen.
12:16But I don't know if that's asking too much.
12:17Or if it's a player that didn't play much last year that's still getting his legs under him.
12:23But physically, he looks great.
12:25He's been out there, if I recall, every practice, which based on where we were a couple months ago when we would ask the question,
12:32is he going to pair up with Milton Williams in there, we didn't really know.
12:36So that's a positive development, just his presence.
12:39And now I think it's about getting the presence to turn to the performance that they hope he can ultimately harness.
12:46You're an insider here.
12:47What are you hearing on Brady night?
12:48So I haven't seen the statue.
12:52Has anyone seen the statue?
12:53I haven't heard even.
12:54I mean, they're keeping a very good secret on that.
12:57Timing-wise, ceremony 6 o'clock outside in the pavilion.
13:03We will carry it live right here on 98.5 The Sports Hub, by the way.
13:06Tom will be here.
13:07Robert Kraft will be here.
13:08They're about 10 to 15-minute ceremony.
13:10They'll also broadcast it in the stadium.
13:13So if fans are coming to the game and they want a good view of it on the huge screen,
13:19I think they're encouraging the fans to come to the stadium and sit in the stadium.
13:23I think my hunch would be most will check the pavilion out and see if there's a better vantage point to see it close by.
13:31But if you can't, know that it's on the screens.
13:35So you're saying part of it's going to be indoors?
13:38I think it's outside there.
13:41He's saying they're going to broadcast it inside the stadium for those who go to their seats to watch.
13:47Yes.
13:47No, I heard that.
13:48You said it was in the pavilion.
13:49In the pavilion.
13:49So with that area, when I say pavilion, I think it's right outside the Patriots Hall of Fame.
13:54Right outside the pro shop.
13:55You've got to be ticketed to see it.
13:57You won't be able to walk up and see it because that is now inside the stadium on game day.
14:01I thought that's the cross pavilion.
14:03No.
14:04That's what I got to do.
14:05No, my bad.
14:06But I'm thinking maybe for security, you've got to do it.
14:08I don't know.
14:08So only people with tickets to the game will be able to see the statue.
14:12Yeah.
14:13Yes.
14:14And, Mike, I know you spent a lot of time with the offense today.
14:16Yes.
14:16But what have you made of the camp that Kyle Duggar has had so far?
14:19Sort of nondescript.
14:21Not too many plays that make you say, wow.
14:25Kyle, and quite honestly, not too many plays where you look at someone else making a play
14:31and saying Kyle was closest in coverage.
14:34So, like, not a great answer, Tim.
14:36Yeah.
14:37But a player that I would say, like, hasn't stood out one way or the other,
14:41which is probably a little disappointing relative to the investment that you've made in him.
14:47Right?
14:47And he is coming back from a significant ankle injury, had surgery.
14:51So maybe there's an aspect with him of still rounding into form.
14:55Mike Reese brought a drumstick with him today, guys.
14:58I am so happy.
14:59Look at this.
15:00Pass it along.
15:01All right.
15:01So I wanted to get my mind right for today.
15:04This is a big day.
15:05So last night I had the opportunity to go to Foreigner, great Hall of Fame band.
15:10So, down in Cohasset, sold out, joyous, great venue, right up close.
15:20South Shore Music Circus.
15:21South Shore guy.
15:22They did a drum solo.
15:25Oh, rat-tat-tat.
15:26And Chris, their drummer.
15:28Great.
15:29You're on first name basis.
15:30Tosses it out to me and not my finest moment.
15:33So what the moment called for would have been, like, that's what the moment called for.
15:40I went baseball.
15:41I tried to keep it in front of me, and it, like, bounced off my chest and in front of me.
15:46And I came away with it, but I'm sort of ashamed at what I did.
15:53A guitar pick as well?
15:54Yeah, I got a guitar pick.
15:55Oh, man, you were cleaning up.
15:57Wow.
15:57Look at Mike.
15:58Did you catch that one?
16:00Memorabilia Mike today.
16:01They fly those out.
16:02That was one that, uh, this is a guitar pick.
16:04Look at that.
16:05And just to give you, for those that are fans, this is going to, this is the guitarist who's
16:09going to take over as the lead singer for Kelly Hansen, who's retiring after 20 years.
16:15So really what I wanted to do, Beatle, was go down, thank Kelly for 20 years of keeping
16:20Foreigner's legacy alive.
16:22And this guy's taking over.
16:23And we determined, me and my friend Dave, who was with me, that he's ready.
16:27They're going to be ready for another 20 years.
16:29You sound like Capello.
16:31You sound like Mark Capello.
16:32Yep.
16:33Happy birthday, Eric.
16:34Thank you for, for all the music you've given us.
16:36What a good show.
16:37Yeah.
16:38I thought it was a great show.
16:39You know what?
16:39I'd go see them over the, can I look at the set list to give you a review?
16:43Yeah.
16:43Go set list.
16:44I'm going to tell you before you go in on it, Beatle, it's short.
16:47Good.
16:48So it's, it was.
16:49So you know that I'm going to like it.
16:50Yeah.
16:50He's going to like the set list because it goes to the, what do you got?
16:54So.
16:54Who do you like better?
16:55Foreigner or The Doors?
16:57Foreigner.
16:57Yeah, I agree.
16:58Such a better band.
16:59Yeah.
17:00Yeah.
17:00Great venue.
17:01Sold out.
17:02Real bad.
17:02Cool.
17:03Like, and Alan, I just want to, what do you got, Beatle?
17:06Give it to me.
17:06And then I, just leave me one second at the end.
17:08This is playing the hits.
17:09Ready?
17:09Yeah.
17:09Started out with double vision.
17:12Oh my God.
17:13Went to head games.
17:15What's jukebox hero?
17:16Cold as ice.
17:18Nice.
17:18Batting third.
17:19Sacrifice.
17:20Yes.
17:20Cold as ice.
17:22Number four, waiting for a girl like you.
17:24Oh my God.
17:24I've been waiting for a girl like you.
17:29Dirty white boy.
17:30Do I know that one?
17:32Yes, you do.
17:33Play that funky music.
17:34I dedicated that to Mike.
17:36No, that's not.
17:36Chris, Chris dedicated that one to Mike Reese.
17:38He's a drumstick.
17:40Dirty white boy.
17:41Feels like the first time.
17:44Oh yeah.
17:44That came up next.
17:46Urgent.
17:47Urgent.
17:48Wow, another hit.
17:49Yep, there's your solo.
17:50Then the solo.
17:51That's when I got this Beatle.
17:52Okay, then it was jukebox hero right out of that.
17:58Long, long way from home.
17:59I used to work out to that jukebox hero.
18:01And then two bangers to close it out, including one I know you like, which is,
18:05I want to know what love is.
18:07Why don't you just show me?
18:08And can I just jump in on that Beatle?
18:10Yeah.
18:10They bring up high school choir from Rockland, Massachusetts to sing with him.
18:14Shout out to Rockland.
18:15And then he says to the crowd, we've been doing this for 15 years.
18:20Bulldogs.
18:21And the reason why is there's too many cuts to music and arts programs around.
18:26Support the programs.
18:27It was a nice, like, moment.
18:29And then they finished up with Hot Blooded.
18:34Hot Blooded.
18:36Wow.
18:37That's a show right there, Mike.
18:40That's what I would tell Bon Jovi to do.
18:41That's what I would tell Toto to do.
18:43I'd say, hey, Toto.
18:44Play the hits.
18:45Hey, Toto, take a page out of a foreigner's book.
18:47Toto sucked, huh?
18:48Because everybody left that show happy, didn't they?
18:51It was happiness.
18:51Yeah, where's the bathroom break in there?
18:53There's not even a bathroom break there.
18:54What do you do?
18:54You can't walk away.
18:56You can't grab a beer.
18:57Yeah.
18:57Awesome, Mike.
18:59I'm glad you had a good time.
19:00Thank you, Beatle.
19:01Thank you for your late night texts filling us in.
19:03I love to let him know.
19:05Send him a picture, a little video.
19:06But wasn't that great, though?
19:07You heard everyone singing the song.
19:09Yes.
19:10Everyone together.
19:11You were right there.
19:11Everyone's happy.
19:13Well, yeah.
19:14He's mocking you.
19:15Isn't McCone?
19:15Is he mocking you?
19:16You were a closet freak.
19:16No, I was not.
19:17I was the gentleman.
19:19No, genuinely happy.
19:20I mean, we heard his musical abilities.
19:22I thought it was genuine.
19:22They had to do it acapella because they didn't have any instruments left.
19:25They kept throwing them at Reese.
19:27Drop the stick.
19:29Someone tweeted me.
19:30Half a drumstick and no guitar pick.
19:33They were all shirtless by the end of the show, too.
19:35He knew it was you.
19:36Someone tweeted me.
19:37Hot-blooded.
19:37How could you drop the stick?
19:41Mike, thanks for stopping by.
19:42See you, Mike.
19:43Appreciate you guys.
19:43Great to see you, pal.
19:44See you Friday.
