Xi's China Claims It "Drove Away" Trump's Warship | South China Sea Confrontation

China has claimed that it allegedly warned and drove away an American destroyer that was sailing near the disputed Scarborough Shoal in the West Philippine Sea. China claims control over the waters off the Philippines and considers it a part of the South China Sea. The Chinese defence ministry said the American warship USS Higgins "illegally entered China’s territorial waters off Huangyan Island". China accused the US military of "infringing its sovereignty", adding that America’s actions undermine peace and stability in the South China Sea. The US has denied China’s claims, saying that the warship was conducting a freedom of navigation operation. The US and China are locked in a trade spat over Donald Trump’s sweeping tariffs on Chinese imports. The latest rift also followed a crash between two Chinese vessels that occurred while chasing a Filipino patrol boat. The growing conflict in the South China Sea poses a massive risk to the global supply chains.
