Transcript
00:00it was a perfect storm we have capacity for about 200 animals but we were sitting at about 260 dogs
00:09in our kennels an overcrowded animal shelter and extreme heat kind of a combination of us having
00:16a large population and very little space to put all of them for the ones that really needed the
00:23air conditioning and needed some time away from the heat the end of july and early august brought
00:28record heat at the pet resource center in hillsborough county florida the vacuweather
00:33reel fill temps pushing the 110s for nearly two weeks dogs don't cool down like we do they release
00:41heat through their paws and by panting since then cooling fans are running splash pads are set up
00:47and these hot dogs are cooling off however they can so the staff at the shelter took just regular
00:54chicken broth also they took some cool whip and good old-fashioned peanut butter and made frozen
00:59pops for the pups to get their temperatures down fast but the shelter needed to get at least 50 dogs
01:06out of the heat and into temporary foster homes and fast an urgent plea to the community went out
01:12and they delivered the response was actually overwhelming we had over 350 foster applications
01:20submitted we had well over 300 adoptions in a one-week period for now staff are doing everything
01:26they can to keep the dogs cool but in a summer this hot relief may not come from fans or splash pads
01:33but from friendly fosters and adopters for accuweather i'm leslie hudson reporting
