05:47Je me suis dit deux yeux rouges.

06:51...and they want to go out and look for it...
06:53...is because, well, this looks so harmless.
06:55But, to me, it seems quite dangerous.
07:00They have no idea.
07:03Don't just go willy-nilly out looking for something.
07:06You never know what you're gonna find.
07:08You never know if it's gonna go one way or another.
07:11You may not come home.
07:14Because these things have been around longer than you.
07:18So it's gonna outsmart you.
07:22The trestle, it is a very spooky place.
07:25People have been doing this thing since it was built.
07:29It gets more and more terrifying the more people that die.
07:33And a lot of people have died, especially young kids.
07:37I met Savannah in middle school.
07:53I was a really quiet kid and so was she.
07:57And I was sitting in the back of my class and she sat down next to me and started drawing in my notebook.
08:05From there, we hung out basically every day.
08:09She would try to sneak me out of the house almost with, you know, my parents were there.
08:19Me and Savannah really brought the best out of each other.
08:22I think she really complimented me as a person for being so quiet,
08:26to be able to actually express myself and learn how to have a voice.
08:33I've never had a friend until I had Savannah.
08:45On May 26, 2019, my friend Savannah Bright, um, went up to the Popelick trestle.
08:57A whole bunch of our friends had everyone over.
09:06I guess there was a lot of tension in the air there that day.
09:10They were just looking for that new adventure and she left with a couple of them.
09:19And they had gone to Popelick Park.
09:24I found out that they were at the park when Savannah had sent me Snapchat.
09:33And as soon as I saw that they were there, the first thought that came through my head was,
09:40don't go on the trestle.
09:43And I texted her and I said, whatever you do, do not go up there.
09:48And I thought that they would have listened to me.
09:52But I was wrong.
10:00If you're going to do those things, understand that there is a consequence.
10:07Because if you don't know what you're doing, you may regret it for the rest of your life.
10:13It hits a little close for me because I have had an experience with the goat man.
10:23It was middle of the night.
10:29I couldn't sleep.
10:30So what I normally do is I go out and I take walks.
10:35It's dark.
10:37There's no street lights.
10:39So it's peaceful.
10:41Then there's the big old cornfield towards the trestle.
10:45And I don't know where I started hearing this, like, I call it an auto-tuned cow noise.
10:56Like, I know it sounds really funky, but, um, it's like...
11:02I don't know what told me to, but I look to the right, I'm hearing this noise.
11:10And I see this giant, and it had the face of a goat.
11:21It's sitting there, and it's just whatever it had, it was shoveling it into its mouth.
11:27Just scooping it up and shoving it into its mouth.
11:31Just...
11:32I guess the best thing I can describe is I felt human that I could die at that moment.
11:40It was a predator, and it was gonna get me.
11:44And all I could think about was get home.
11:49I don't know if it's seen me.
11:56For me, it was, don't let it see you.
12:00For a firefighter, no day is the same.
12:16You never know what to expect when you come on.
12:19It could be a day that, you know, changes the life of other people, including yourself.
12:23I'm not sure how far it dates back.
12:28The story's about the half man, half goat.
12:31You know, if you go up on the trestle, he was the one that would throw you off.
12:34You know, I was told the story to as I was growing up as a kid and teenager.
12:38But it's not easy, because we do see a lot of death that surrounds it.
12:43You know, the worst call you can ever get in your life is a call from police or whoever
12:49that something has happened to your daughter or your son.
12:53When I got that Snapchat from Savannah, I felt as if something bad was going to occur.
13:05I had ran downstairs and my dad looked at me and asked, where are your friends?
13:10And I looked back at him and I said, we need to leave now.
13:13And we drove up there.
13:17It was already dark outside.
13:20It rained that day.
13:23It was just really foggy.
13:26And...
13:40I remember seeing caution tape or cop cars everywhere blocking off the whole road.
13:49My dad tried to get more information and that's when they told him that one of the girls had passed on the scene.
13:56I just kept praying, please don't let it be her.
14:02Don't let her be gone.
14:06I'll never forget that sight.
14:11Savannah, her body was still there on the trestles when we were up there.
14:17And her body definitely was, um, was distorted, I don't want to say that much.
14:26The girls were told that it was an abandoned trek.
14:34I guess they just went a few feet in too far to get off it.
14:42And, um, she had gotten hit by the train.
14:55I couldn't picture my life without her.
15:01Around 3am that night, her mom called me and said that she was gone.
15:07I don't think I'll ever have a bond like that again.
15:16I don't know if I'm allowed to say everything that I want to say right now.
15:25Is it okay if I say it?
15:29Yeah, please.
15:30Yeah.
15:31Um, I'm not sure what they knew about the story of the goat man.
15:38But I personally believe that helped motivate them.
15:39And that's where the thrill-seeking comes into play.
15:41And that's where the thrill-seeking comes into play.
15:42And that's where the thrill-seeking comes into play.
15:46People that go up on the train trestle that are looking for this goat man, uh,
15:49they're looking for the thrill-seeking.
15:50And that's where the thrill-seeking comes into play.
15:55People that go up on the train trestle that are looking for this goat man, uh,
16:03it's supposed to be silent.
16:06And then you know that the goat man has caught you whenever you see his eyes.
16:15And his eyes are...
16:18and his eyes are...

33:09Look what Savannah's family went through and all the past accidents that have happened up there.
33:18Look what their families and friends went through.
33:21And then you want to throw this festival celebrating the Goatman.
33:31Well, local urban legend is being celebrated in Popelik Park.
33:35The legend of Popelik features fun for everybody in the family.
33:39And if you want to have a good time and get scared this Halloween season, that's the place.
33:43This weekend is the first annual, hopefully, Goatman Festival.
33:48And it's just going to be a fun weekend.
33:51We're here tonight celebrating Goatman.
33:54My friends were like, oh, we're right next to the Goatman Bridge.
33:57And I was like, wait, what's the Goatman?
33:59Part of the legend is that it lures you to the trestle.
34:02I did go at night, and it was pretty freaky, but I didn't see any Goatman.
34:06Yeah, I've been to the trestle a couple of times.
34:09It spooks me a little bit.
34:11I wouldn't dare go near it.
34:13I'm too scared myself going there.
34:16People like to come and hike through the woods of Popelik and possibly look for the Goatman while they're there.
34:22And they can hear about the stories and legends.
34:25It's a great circus train wreck, the Popelik, and that abominable creature they call the Popelik monster.
34:33We're going to be selling a lot of cryptid merchandise, everything from action figures to T-shirts and all kinds of memorabilia.
34:40We are presenting the original costume, and what's left of it.
34:43We have Ron Shulnick, the director of The Legend of the Popelik monster, appearing.
34:47And he's going to be showing the film and doing Q&As.
34:50So my name is Ron Shulnick.
34:51I've been asked to introduce this film.
34:53We're happy that we're still celebrating the legend today.
34:57Oh, the Goatman Festival.
34:59Let me tell you.
35:01That festival, I have a lot of feelings about it, because on one hand, I love the stories.
35:06I love Halloween.
35:08I love cryptids.
35:10And when we're talking about a festival that brings in tourism dollars, the city is all about it.
35:15They want to have this story spread.
35:19But at the same time, they're playing this dangerous game where they're telling so many more people about it.
35:25What happens to the ramifications of that when more and more people know about the legend?
35:31Just take my word for it.
35:34Stay off the damn trestle.
35:36That post-script at the end was done after two people had died.
35:41During the two years it took us to make the film.
35:44I think it's natural that my perspective has changed of the film over time.
35:50What a journey.
35:51Oh, boy.
35:54It's tough that something that you do for the sake of art is connected with real human tragedy.
36:02But not telling stories, not celebrating folktales, is not the answer.
36:11This gives you a chance to speak out about these things.
36:14To promote not just the legend, but to promote the fact that this is a dangerous situation.
36:20We do get the occasional negative and the person that comes in that's very upset that we're promoting this entire thing.
36:28We're not in any way trying to exploit anyone that's ever been killed or injured in a train accident.
36:34Everything we do, we say, please stay off the trestle.
36:38Don't go to the trestle.
36:39If you want to have a Goatman experience, come to one of our events.
36:42Do not try and actually have a real experience because it is very dangerous.
36:47Who or what do you think is responsible for this series of accidents?
37:10It's not a who or what.
37:15It's an individual choice every single time.
37:19And it's not an accident.
37:22You chose to be there and take a chance and risk your life.
37:31So I've dedicated myself to trying to make a difference.
37:36Going to the schools, talking to the kids,
37:39trying to get people to realize that railroads can be a bad, very bad choice
37:44to be on or around a railroad track.
37:49You can blame it on anything you want to, and people do constantly.
37:54But you make choices, you pay the consequences.
37:59The Goatman has exploded in popularity,
38:03even though the deaths were absolutely linked to that story.
38:08that is not stopping teenagers from getting interested and to see it for themselves.
38:14Unfortunately, I think somebody else is going to die here pretty soon.
38:19This community, they don't emphasize these accidents.
38:28They only emphasize the legend.
38:31Well, this legend has caused me lots of issues with friendships.
38:41And I personally believe that if I was to have that kind of relationship again,
38:49then I would have to prepare for the exact same thing to happen.
38:53I never go a day without thinking about it.
39:05Savannah's death stopped nobody from going to the trestle.
39:08Someone went onto the trestle the very next day
39:11and even said, the Goatman didn't get me this time.
39:16This time.
39:19that in alus внit up in euron Kontra a key building in the Decreter Court for the future.
39:22It 거죠 so they did not get me this time.
39:25If I had anything but I could see it as a cowardly seeing it again,
39:29researching the next ab짜 and everything in my life will kick me home.
39:31But I didn't see if that's true.
39:34This is funny, that's why I don't get my ass.
