02:07And America strong tonight. The Army veteran on a mission to spread smiles with a little help from his friends.
02:18From ABC News World Headquarters in New York, this is World News Tonight with David Muir.
02:26Good evening. Thank you for joining us on a busy Monday night.
02:29I'm Mary Bruce in for David.
02:31And we begin tonight with the remarkable high-stakes show of diplomacy at the White House.
02:36Three days after President Trump's summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin,
02:40Ukraine's President Zelensky and Europe's top leaders rushing to the White House in their own effort to stop the war.
02:47This was the scene. President Trump welcoming Zelensky to the White House today.
02:51Their meeting far more constructive than Zelensky's last visit to the Oval Office, which spiraled into chaos.
02:56The president had been insisting on a ceasefire, but after meeting with Putin, he now says it's not a must before negotiating a peace deal.
03:05In an extraordinary moment, Zelensky standing shoulder to shoulder with President Trump and European allies,
03:10calling for security guarantees for Ukraine as a condition to ending the war.
03:15And late today, Trump calling Putin after today's meetings,
03:18saying they are beginning to arrange a meeting between the Russian president and President Zelensky.
03:23ABC's Rachel Scott leads us off at the White House.
03:28Tonight at the White House, an extraordinary scene of diplomacy.
03:32Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and some of Europe's top leaders who had raced to Washington to back him up,
03:38meeting with President Trump in an effort to stop the war.
03:42From Trump, a warm welcome.
03:44Appearing pleased, Zelensky was wearing a suit this time.
03:47President Trump, sir, your message to the people of Ukraine as world leaders gather here today.
03:51In the Oval Office, both men seeming determined to avoid a repeat of their explosive clash six months ago.
04:00Thank you so much, Mr. President.
04:02If I can, first of all, thank you for your invitation and thank you very much for your efforts,
04:07personal efforts to stop killings and stop this war.
04:11President Trump hoping today's meeting will lead to a trilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
04:16I think there will be a reasonable chance of ending the war when we do that.
04:20Zelensky insisting on security guarantees in case Russia invades again.
04:24What security guarantees do you need from President Trump to be able to make a deal?
04:29Is it American troops, intelligent, equipment? What is it?
04:32Everything. It depends on the big countries, on the United States, on a lot of our friends.
04:39Trump making this commitment.
04:40We're going to make sure that if there's peace, the peace is going to stay long term.
04:46This is very long term. We're not talking about a two-year peace and then we end up in this mess again.
04:51Pledging American support.
04:53When it comes to security, there's going to be a lot of help. It's going to be good.
04:56They are first line of defense because they're there. They're Europe.
05:01But we're going to help them out also. We'll be involved.
05:03But on the question of an immediate ceasefire, the president unmoved.
05:07Heading to meet with Putin in Alaska, he called it a must.
05:11I want to see a ceasefire rapidly. I don't know if it's going to be today, but I'm not going to be happy if it's not today.
05:16But Putin said no and Trump backed down.
05:20Today, European leaders trying to change his mind.
05:23President Emmanuel Macron of France.
05:24To ask for a truce or a ceasefire, at least to stop the killings, as we discussed, is a necessity.
05:33And we all support this idea.
05:35German Chancellor Friedrich Meyers.
05:37I can't imagine that the next meeting would took place without a ceasefire.
05:43So let's work on that and let's try to put pressure on Russia.
05:47Trump unconvinced.
05:48I like the concept of a ceasefire for one reason, because you'd stop killing people immediately,
05:53as opposed to in two weeks or one week or whatever it takes.
05:57But we can work a deal where we're working on a peace deal while they're fighting.
06:01The president confident Putin wants a deal.
06:04Earlier, a live mic picking up this conversation between Trump and Francis Macron.
06:08I think he wants to make a deal for me.
06:10You understand that? As crazy as it sounds.
06:12The president telling Zelensky and the allies he would soon call Putin to fill him in on the day's talks and discuss next steps.
06:20And Rachel joins us now from the White House.
06:22And Rachel, we've just learned that call between President Trump and Vladimir Putin has now taken place.
06:28So what are you hearing?
06:29Mary, the president posting on social media that he called President Putin to begin arrangements for a meeting.
06:35He says the first meeting that would take place would be between Putin and Zelensky,
06:39and that would be followed by another meeting that the president would then join.
06:43Still a lot of questions on when and where these meetings would take place.
06:47And of course, whether these two leaders, Zelensky and Putin, can make an agreement for lasting peace.
06:52Mary?
06:52We shall see.
06:53Rachel, thank you.
06:54Just hours before the talks in Washington, Russia launching more deadly attacks on Ukraine.
06:59Russian forces unleashing deadly drone assaults on civilians in Ukraine.
07:04At least six people killed, including a young child.
07:07The attacks underscoring Ukraine's calls for an immediate ceasefire.
07:11ABC's chief foreign correspondent Ian Pannell in Kyiv.
07:15This is why Ukraine and European leaders are pushing for security guarantees against Russia tonight.
07:22President Trump saying Vladimir Putin wants peace.
07:25But this was Russia's deadly message ahead of that high-stakes meeting.
07:29Drone and missile attacks on major Ukrainian cities, killing at least 10 people and wounding dozens more.
07:36Five drones striking this one residential complex, far away from the battlefield in Ukraine's second-largest city, Kharkiv.
07:45It's become a grim routine.
07:47Emergency crews clawing through rubble, searching for survivors.
07:52At least seven people killed.
07:54An entire family among the dead, including their one-year-old daughter, Mia.
07:59She and her family lived on the top floor of the building.
08:02Their neighbor, Hannah, saying, I saw the little one taking her first steps right in front of my windows.
08:09They were a beautiful family.
08:11Trump and European leaders discussing NATO-style security guarantees,
08:16potentially protecting Ukraine against further Russian attacks.
08:20But Russia's foreign ministry spokesperson calling any NATO contingent in Ukraine unacceptable.
08:26And despite all the talk of peace tonight, there is no ceasefire, with Russia's relentless attacks continuing.
08:35Mary, despite the optimism at tonight's meeting, any deal to end this war does still appear to be far off.
08:41But after that show of unity, the ball does now seem to be back firmly in the Kremlin's court.
08:47Mary?
08:48A deal far off and the attacks continuing.
08:50Ian, thank you.
08:51We do move on now to Hurricane Aaron, growing in size as it moves along the East Coast.
08:57States of emergency in the Carolinas.
08:59The first Atlantic hurricane of the season, now a Category 4 storm, with winds up to 140 miles per hour.
09:06Possible waves up to 20 feet high.
09:08Evacuations underway in some areas.
09:10ABC's Victor Okendo in the Outer Banks.
09:14Tonight, after battering the Caribbean, a state of emergency in North Carolina.
09:18Coastal areas bracing for up to 20-foot waves as massive Hurricane Aaron gain strength.
09:25Mandatory evacuation orders for the Outer Banks.
09:28Here in Rodanthe, officials are urging everyone to evacuate.
09:32The main highway could flood or get washed out entirely.
09:34And they're also worried about these homes that are not protected by a dune and could get pummeled by the surf.
09:41This video shows what could happen.
09:42This home left floating in the surf after Hurricane Ernesto slammed the area last August.
09:48Aaron, not expected to make landfall in the U.S., but as it rapidly intensified over the weekend, a glancing blow was enough to hammer St. Kitts and the Virgin Islands.
09:58And tens of thousands in Puerto Rico lost power.
10:02Hurricane hunters piercing the monster storm's eyewall.
10:05And those 160-mile-an-hour winds, the middle of the eye, a stunning sight.
10:10Now Aaron, some 600 miles across, preparing to turn north, hugging the East Coast.
10:17Life-threatening rip currents from Florida to Maine.
10:20Lifeguards racing into the water in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina.
10:23Officials say more than 50 people were rescued just today.
10:26Mary, people in the Outer Banks are bracing for a rough few days, especially here in Rodanthe.
10:33Officials tell me these homes are very vulnerable.
10:36Eleven of them have collapsed in the past.
10:39They're urging everyone to follow those evacuation orders.
10:42Mary?
10:43Okay, Victor, thank you.
10:44So let's get right to ABC's chief meteorologist, Ginger Zee, tracking the hurricane's every move.
10:49Ginger?
10:49Yes, Mary, right now Hurricane Aaron is east of the southeastern Bahamas.
10:56It's moving northwest at 10.
10:57Eventually, they'll start to move to the north.
10:59And right now, the tropical storm force winds are more than 230 miles outside the center.
11:03We're going to see that expand even more as tropical systems do as they move north.
11:08And that's why you have a tropical storm watch now up for the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
11:12Also, a storm surge watch for up to four feet of water coming onshore.
11:16Remember, this is like a bulldozer pushing tons of water at the shore.
11:20And so from Wednesday night through Thursday, that's when we're going to get the closest clip with the storm.
11:26And why do we know that it's going to turn to the northeast?
11:28Well, we've got this ridge to the east that's weakening and that stationary front that's going to help eject it there right through that alley.
11:34Now, let's talk about the impacts because up and down the coast, rip currents risk is going to be high.
11:39But it's all about the waves and the piling up of that water, the coastal erosion that comes on top of this.
11:44As that thing pulls away to the northeast, it's still going to be pushing water all the way up to Nantucket.
11:49But Wednesday, you see some of the highest totals there, 10 to 15-foot waves in coastal North Carolina, Rehoboth Beach, up to Nantucket, Rhode Island, New Jersey Shore, up to 10 feet generally and some places even higher.
12:01Mary.
12:02As you've been warning, up to 20 feet in some areas.
12:04Hard to imagine.
12:05Ginger, thank you.
12:06Now to the airline strike, grounding hundreds of flights across North America.
12:1110,000 Air Canada flight attendants defying a second order demanding they return to work.
12:16The strike now stranding 130,000 passengers a day.
12:21ABC's Gio Benitez covers aviation.
12:23Work, won't fly, I'm paid work.
12:26Tonight, 10,000 flight attendants on strike, grounding a major North American airline.
12:30Go home.
12:33I'm paid work.
12:34Earlier today, Air Canada saying the Canada Industrial Relations Board has declared the strike unlawful, ordering their flight attendants to get back on the job.
12:43But the Canadian Union of Public Employees doubling down on their demands for better pay.
12:48If it means folks like me going to jail, then so be it.
12:53If it means our union being fined, then so be it.
12:57We're looking for a solution here.
12:59Air Canada forced to cancel hundreds of flights.
13:02We are harming our customers.
13:04And over 500,000 to date.
13:07Travelers frustrated.
13:09They said that we have canceled all our flights.
13:13Canadian officials say the country, already hit by President Trump's tariffs, cannot afford to take risks with the economy.
13:20In a year where Canadian businesses and families have faced too much disruption and uncertainty, they shouldn't have to shoulder another blow.
13:28And Mary, Air Canada says it is providing customers with a full refund, travel credit, or rebooking them on another airline.
13:35All flights will be canceled until at least tomorrow afternoon.
13:38Mary.
13:39And Gio, we know you'll stay on this.
13:41Tonight, authorities are investigating the deadly shooting of two police officers in Utah.
13:47The officers responding to a domestic disturbance call.
13:50The gunman suddenly opening fire moments after they arrived.
13:53Here's ABC's Aaron Katursky.
13:55Tonight, two Utah police officers are dead and another wounded gunned down responding to a domestic disturbance call, immediately taking fire.
14:03I got some officers down.
14:05The terror evident in police radio traffic.
14:08Shot fired, I've been hit.
14:10The first officer arrived last night at a home in Trimonton, north of Salt Lake City.
14:14Right away, officials say 33-year-old Ryan Bate emerged with a gun.
14:18Upon arrival, they immediately began taking fire.
14:22The first officer shot and killed.
14:24A second officer responding to assist, also fatally shot.
14:28Still shooting.
14:29Copy, still shooting.
14:30Bate then allegedly fired into a sheriff's deputy's vehicle, injuring him and his police service dog.
14:36Two officers down in the intersection, not moving.
14:41I'm hit.
14:42Authorities say bystanders eventually convinced the suspect to put down his weapon and he was taken into custody.
14:48Bate booked on two counts of aggravated murder and one count of assault.
14:52And tonight, Sergeant Lee Sorensen and Officer Eric Estrada remembered as heroes.
14:56Domestic calls are volatile, Mary.
14:59Responding to them is one of the most dangerous things police officers do.
15:02Tonight, the injured deputy is out of the hospital.
15:05The suspect is being held without bond.
15:07Mary?
15:08Just an awful scene.
15:09Erin, thank you.
15:11Tonight, the accused drug dealer known as the Ketamine Queen has agreed to plead guilty to charges connected to the death of actor Matthew Perry.
15:18Prosecutors say she illegally sold him the drug, leading to his fatal overdose.
15:23The fifth and final plea in the case.
15:25Here's ABC's Trevor Ault.
15:27Nearly two years after the fatal overdose of Friends star Matthew Perry, the so-called Ketamine Queen,
15:34is now expected to plead guilty for supplying him with the dose that ultimately killed him.
15:39According to court documents, accused drug dealer Jasveen Sangha offered Perry a sample of Ketamine through a friend,
15:46and within weeks, 50 vials would follow.
15:49The actor had been open about his longtime struggle with addiction, speaking with our Diane Sawyer a year before his death.
15:55Addiction, the big terrible thing, is far too powerful for anyone to defeat alone.
16:01But together, one day at a time, we can beat it down.
16:05Your disease is just outside, just doing one-arm push-ups, just waiting, just waiting for you, waiting to get you alone.
16:12Court documents show after Perry's death, Sangha tried to destroy evidence of her involvement,
16:18texting their mutual friend, delete all our messages.
16:21Sangha is the fifth and final person charged in Perry's overdose, all of them pleading guilty.
16:27In the end, these defendants were more interested in profiting off Mr. Perry than caring for his well-being.
16:35Mary, Sangha was just weeks away from her trial, and she now admits, quote,
16:39I'm pleading guilty because I am guilty of these charges.
16:42She faces up to 65 years in prison.
16:45Mary?
16:46Okay, Trevor, thank you.
16:48And when we come back, the dramatic rescue, four young girls rescued from Lake Superior.
16:53Big price cuts for popular weight loss drugs.
16:55What's behind the move?
16:56Plus, Amtrak is warning of disruptions tonight after a major train derailment.
17:01The video, coming in next.
17:04Next here tonight, Amtrak is warning a freight train derailment in North Carolina is impacting its services nationwide.
17:12More than two dozen cars loaded with coal derailed this weekend outside Raleigh.
17:16The cars are blocking a line used for freight and passenger operations.
17:20And a dramatic rescue in Lake Superior.
17:23The Coast Guard saving four girls between the ages of 8 and 14 stranded on a rock while paddleboarding,
17:30using a helicopter to locate the girls, then hoisting all four from the rock
17:34and transporting them to their parents in a nearby field.
17:37And when we come back, big cuts to the price of some popular weight loss drugs.
17:43To the index now, drug maker Novo Nordisk is slashing prices for its popular weight loss drugs, Ozempic and Wagovi.
17:51A month's supply of either drug is being offered for $499.
17:55That's half of the prior list price.
17:57Patients can order the drugs from Novo Nordisk or at participating pharmacies.
18:01The company hoping to compete with cheaper compounding pharmacies.
18:05And when we come back, the Army vet who's dedicated his life to spreading the love with a little help from his friends.
18:13Finally tonight, the Army veteran and his special mission.
18:17Tonight, one Army veteran is traveling the world on a mission to spread joy.
18:23It all started when former Army helicopter pilot Kevin Bubles was deployed in Afghanistan.
18:28One member on the base always made him smile.
18:32Our chaplain brought this little black lab named Zach along.
18:35And it was just incredible how this dog could bring people together.
18:38So when Kevin returned to civilian life.
18:41What are they doing here today?
18:42Spreading smiles.
18:43He was inspired to start a new beginning with his family.
18:47Therapy dogs are for others.
18:49They help us spread joy and help people that are in stressful situations.
18:53And so we got Ellie.
18:54Now Kevin and Ellie are on a mission to spread smiles.
18:58Little sister Emma, also a therapy dog, joining in their travels.
19:02Could you hug Ellie?
19:04And it's not just service members feeling the love.
19:08You can come pet her.
19:09That's so nice.
19:11Helping out at children's hospitals and easing the stress of these college students during finals week.
19:16And overseas too, from London to the streets of Slovenia.
19:20You guys smile.
19:21I'm going to smile.
19:23Their infectious smiles brightening everyone's day.
19:28You're welcome.
19:29And right here tonight, Kevin on their dedication to the mission.
19:33Anytime you walk away from, say, the children's hospital and they're smiling, there's something powerful about that.
19:39Proving why dogs are man's best friend.
19:41I'm Mary Bruce.
