Seaside communities are being put to the test as Erin approaches areas vulnerable after other hurricanes in recent years.
Transcript
00:00now eastern florida was largely spared by aaron's wrath however there have been multiple days of
00:08dangerous rip currents and also beach erosion it's also served as a litmus test for this place
00:14in daytona beach shores this area was extremely hard hit from nicole back in 2022 and you see
00:21these big black bags these now line the beaches and are becoming the new beach in this part of
00:27volusia county when nicole destroyed it now about 20 condominiums were uninhabitable in 2022 after
00:35nicole's strong storm surge made these areas dangerous to live in multiple homes also fell
00:41into the ocean and city planners realized they had to do something to try and mitigate the loss
00:47and the risk for future tropical systems so aaron indirectly was a test for them and we've talked to
00:54many residents over the last couple of days and so far i think things are looking pretty good the
00:59army corps of engineers came in and they used dredging of the inlet and they took that sand from the bottom
01:05of the inlet and redistributed it all throughout the neighborhood so they built up the dunes and they
01:12replaced all the trap bags which they put in earlier to protect the dunes from the surf they took those
01:20out and just filled it in with more sand now many of these small seaside communities are still in
01:26active recovery much like is the case here in daytona beach shores as well as wilbur by the sea there are
01:31still many places that are not inhabitable and they are hoping that will change in the coming months and
01:37maybe year or so now conditions are expected to markedly improve here along eastern florida as we head
01:44towards the weekend reporting in daytona beach shores i'm leslie hudson for accuweather
