'We're Going To Stay Here For Awhile': Trump Speaks To National Guard, Police In Washington, D.C.

On Thursday, President Trump spoke to police officers and National Guard troops in Washington, D.C.

00:11You've got to be very careful. You don't want to slip or fall like somebody else I know.

00:22Hello everybody. It's great to be with you. You guys are doing a fantastic job and gals

00:27doing an amazing job and we appreciate it. The numbers are down like we wouldn't believe but

00:34we believe it. Where do I stand here? Right where? Okay. Hello. It's a healthy attractive looking group of

00:45people. That's good. Well I just want to thank everybody very much for being here. I wanted to

00:52do this. We've had some incredible results. The results have come out and it's like a different

00:59place. It's like a different city. It's the capital. It's going to be the best in the world. We're going

01:05to do what you're doing with law enforcement and very importantly also we're going to physically do

01:10it. We're going back to Congress for some money and we're going to redo a lot of the pavement, a lot of

01:16the medians, a lot of the graffitis all coming off real fast. It's going to come down real fast.

01:22We're working with Clark Construction there. One of the big ones. They're the biggest here by far

01:27actually. And we're going to be not so much building. It's cleaning and fixing and redoing and

01:34putting brand new surfaces down on your roads and streets. And when people come in from the airport all

01:40the way to the Capitol or the White House or any place else they're going, they're going to say, boy,

01:43this place is spotless. So we're doing that. Most importantly, though, we're going to have

01:47a crowd of people that are going to be happy. You know, I've received more phone calls from people

01:54in the last four days than I ever have. I've been here now four years plus. And by the way,

02:00I think we had about the best seven months. They're saying that any president said we've done a lot of

02:06work. We've done a lot of good work, including the biggest tax cuts that you've ever had. I know you

02:10guys don't care about taxes, so you don't care about saving a little tax, but you saved a lot of tax

02:15actually. But we've had a great, great period of time. But I've never received so many phone calls

02:22thanking me for what we've done in Washington, D.C., from people that haven't gone to a restaurant

02:28in literally in four years. And they said, you know, what you've done is it's unprecedented because

02:35they said it was just unsafe. We couldn't do it. We'd go out and you'd see the stories. You'd read

02:43the stories. You'd see all of the things that are happening. And they said, we just we couldn't

02:48we couldn't stand it, sir. Now I take my wife and my kids to dinner. One of them said he's gone out

02:54four nights in a row and he hadn't gone out for four years. So it's a it's a great tribute to you.

03:01And when I look at you people, I understand why, because there's no games, right? We're not playing

03:06games. We're going to make it safe. And we're going to then go on to other places. But we're

03:11going to stay here for a while. We want to make this absolutely perfect. It's our capital. And

03:16I guess it used to be many years ago, say, but it's certainly not had a very good run.

03:24And you got to be strong. You got to be tough. You got to do your job, whatever it takes to do your

03:28job. You got to do your job. But the crime numbers are way down. I'm looking at you saw some of the

03:33stats. They just read them out to me inside the numbers that we haven't seen here ever, actually

03:39ever. And I think it's probably right now. It's to me, I feel very safe now. And I'm hearing people

03:46are very safe. But I know within two weeks, it's going to be Pam. It's going to be at a level that's

03:52even far superior. So I just came. I just wanted to thank you all. You're doing incredible.

03:57You're incredible people. You make the country run, frankly. You make the whole place run.
