00:00You may find another clue, pew, what's the Scooby-Doo?
00:03People started putting out all the-
00:05I know the whole- I know all the lyrics to it, but I'm like, what's the name of the song again?
00:12We'll start with the first one here. I'll read the first one.
00:14Go ahead.
00:15What's another night all alone when you're spending every day on your own?
00:20Which is pretty much the most famous line of that song,
00:23considering the I'm just a kid challenge.
00:25It's literally the one thing when we play live, it just gets louder on that line.
00:29So this one is the song, I'm just a kid,
00:31which was basically the first single off our first album back in 2002.
00:43Since then, it's become a huge thing online because there's the I'm just a kid challenge,
00:48which is basically using that part of the song.
00:50What's another night all alone when you're spending every day on your own?
00:54And here it goes, I'm just a kid.
00:56And that's the transition.
00:57That's the transition.
00:58To the old photos.
01:00If you haven't seen the challenge, basically, it's like recreating
01:03old photos from the past.
01:04And, you know, so people are kind of getting in place.
01:06And then when that chorus drops, it's that trend.
01:09Back to the kid picture.
01:10I'm just a kid.
01:11When you're spending every day on your own.
01:14And here it goes, I'm just a kid.
01:17I think as soon as we wrote it, we felt like this is super catchy, very relatable.
01:22And it felt like this could really be what Simple Plan sounds like.
01:25It was a good starting point to be like, I think this is who we are as a band.
01:31All right.
01:32Number two.
01:34Reveal.
01:35Chuck, you can read this one.
01:36To be on the edge of breaking down and no one's there to save you.
01:40No, you don't know what it's like.
01:44Welcome to my life.
01:45There you go.
01:46To be on the edge of breaking down and no one's there to save you.
01:52To this day, I think of all the songs we've written, I look at all the past discography.
01:56And this might be my favorite song.
01:58I think Welcome to my life is, you know, we kind of started this band.
02:02And we felt like there was a, it was a generation is early 2000s.
02:05You know what I mean?
02:06And people were just beginning to show their vulnerability, especially guys and bands.
02:11You know what I mean?
02:12Trying to show their vulnerability.
02:13And this felt like we were speaking to an audience of being like, hey, do you like,
02:17do you ever feel like breaking down?
02:18Do you ever feel out of place?
02:19Do you ever feel like you're not good enough or all these things you could be feeling of?
02:22Well, if you feel those things, Welcome to my life.
02:24I feel that way too.
02:25This song, I think opened the doors to us all over the world.
02:30Like, you know, that's when we started to tour in Australia a lot.
02:33That's when we went to South America for the first time in Europe, like everything sort of
02:36Asia.
02:37Like it just, this song was sort of the one that really like brought us to the next level.
02:42And yeah, I think still to this day, one of my favorite ones to play and
02:45probably my favorite single plant song.
02:46I love it.
02:50See the next one.
02:51All right.
02:51You say good morning when it's midnight.
02:55Well, that's a great song off our fourth album.
02:59So, so like a different era.
03:01Yeah.
03:01This is called, this song is called Jet Lag.
03:07This album, our album four was called Get Your Heart On.
03:10And it was kind of a return.
03:11We decided like as a band, we'd experimented a lot on the third record.
03:15And it was time to just do some rock songs or some pop punk songs that had the catchiness of
03:19the first album and not just keep it simple.
03:22No pun intended.
03:23I love the lyrical story about it.
03:25It's a story about, you know, the song is called Jet Lag.
03:27It's about being in a relationship, a long distance relationship and loving through the
03:31time zones and so many different angles poetically that we went at it.
03:35In terms of the lyrics, it was cool.
03:37Like I think often we try to come up with titles that are like, you read that you're like,
03:41that's, that can be a song title or it's, or it's not like an obvious word that you would use for
03:45a song.
03:46But when you're able to find a cool angle to that, to me, it really elevates the song.
03:50So this one, it's not like necessarily like, oh yeah, like what do you do with jet lag in the
03:54song?
03:54But we found a really cool twist and it makes it way more interesting in terms of songwriting
03:58and everything.
03:59All right, we're back again.
04:08Now it's 20 years later.
04:09Oh, you know which one this was?
04:10Yeah, that's, I can hear the voice in my head as soon as you say that.
04:15That was so much fun.
04:16We, we collaborated with Avril Lavigne on a song that she put out recently.
04:20And I'm, I'm drawing a blank on what the name of the song is.
04:23Young and dumb.
04:24Young and dumb.
04:25Yes.
04:25I know all the lyrics to it, but I'm like, what's the name of the song again?
04:29It took till 20 years later.
04:33We went on her first tour back in 2003.
04:35We opened up for her and which was a huge decision as a band because she's a little more pop
04:40leaning than we are.
04:41It was a big decision for us to go on that tour.
04:43And we're so happy that we did because we met so many new fans and made new fans and,
04:47and create a great relationship with her.
04:49We hung out a lot and we had a great time on her tour last year.
04:51And then she was like, she kept texting me.
04:53She's like, we should do a song together.
04:54And I'm like, 100%.
04:55I'm like, you tell me where and when we're in and we're in.
04:58And finally, this past year before the tour, we, she was like, hey, let's go to do this
05:03in L.A.
05:03You know, I'll be there at this date and whatever.
05:05And I'm like, we're there.
05:07Oh, I'm this that one.
05:10All righty.
05:10I think it's you.
05:11A one way ticket out of my life.
05:14Watching you fly away.
05:16I never liked you.
05:17So mean.
05:18Whenever I sing that part, I always think like, God.
05:22Back then it was, yeah, it was a bit of a weird, weird story that led to that song.
05:25Yeah.
05:26So this is, um, this is a song that was, uh, on a, on a big soundtrack called a New York
05:31Minute or a movie called New York Minute.
05:33This is like our first like appearance.
05:35This give me a sad card.
05:36This is our first appearance in a major motion picture.
05:40And this song is called Vacation.
05:49It was a Mary Kate and Ashley Simpson, uh, Jesus, Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, uh, movie.
05:55They were going to have this huge Hollywood, like, you know, real, like in theaters movie.
06:00And, uh, and they wrote the whole script around simple plan.
06:03Yeah.
06:04It's hard to believe that a, that a huge Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen movie, uh, that the plot
06:08of the movie is really about going to a simple plan show.
06:11The song is really about it's, it's, I don't even want to talk about it, but maybe we could,
06:15it's really weird.
06:16Like before the band got signed, we had a stalker, a bit of a stalker that would come to my,
06:21how my parents, I didn't have a house yet.
06:23That was my parents' house.
06:24And they would just wait in front of the house.
06:26And she was a young girl and it was a little bit weird.
06:29It was kind of, you know, creepy.
06:30And so we wrote this song that can't you just go on vacation?
06:33I'll, I'll buy your ticket for you.
06:34So we took that idea.
06:35We took that, that feeling of having a stalker and kind of pushed it a little bit more bratty
06:39and a little bit more, you know, like, get out of my life, please.
06:41You know what I mean?
06:43Awesome.
06:44We're crashing like waves.
06:45We're playing in the sand.
06:46That is definitely summer paradise.
06:54My favorite thing about this song is the fact that Sean Paul is a featuring on the song,
06:58which actually happened a bit sort of serendipitously because originally the song had a
07:03featuring by a rapper called K-nan, who's great, amazing.
07:06The song came out in Australia and because it was their summer before our summer over here,
07:10it started picking up steam and getting some success there.
07:13And unfortunately K-nan's label or whatever it was, there was something that they were like,
07:18where did we don't want to push this song right now?
07:20He's got a new record coming out.
07:21So they did not want us to push this as a single worldwide.
07:26Since it was always with a feature, we needed to replace it.
07:29And we got lucky because Sean Paul, who's on Atlantic Records at the time, same as us,
07:34we reached out to him and he was like, absolutely.
07:36So he crushed it.
07:37And I'm not sure which version is better, to be honest, but Sean Paul is such an iconic
07:43Jamaican artist, really brought that flavor, made the song super exciting.
07:46And then it became a worldwide hit for us.
07:48It was one of our, one of our, I mean, probably the latest, biggest song for Symbol Plan.
07:54Oh, Chuck, you're up.
07:55All right.
07:56Will you remember me?
07:58Because I know I won't forget you.
08:00Because I know I won't forget you.
08:03That's, I mean, it's my line, but also Mark Hoppus' line.
08:07That's this, that's this part.
08:08Yeah, the bridge.
08:09Yeah.
08:09The iconic bridge.
08:10This is the song, I'd Do Anything, which was the first song.
08:13I always love saying this because it's a Beastie Boy quote, but this is the first song off our first album.
08:18Remember me, because I know I won't forget you.
08:25This is the song that we sort of kick off the show with these days.
08:28It has everything that, that is simple plan.
08:31And it was the first song, technically, that we ever wrote together.
08:36Correct.
08:36That started this band.
08:39All right.
08:41Is it me now or is it you?
08:42I think it was me.
08:43Ain't it crazy how fast time goes for some wild kids and baggy clothes.
08:48I'm just so happy that we use the word ain't.
08:52I like country music and ain't it crazy how fast time goes.
08:55I just have a little bit of a, this is from our, this is from our new song.
08:57I'll let you, uh, yeah, Nothing Changes just came out.
09:01Ain't it crazy how fast time goes for some wild kids and baggy clothes.
09:07We wrote the song, uh, because we just put out this big documentary on Prime Video
09:12and it's sort of like a whole big retrospective, our 25 years as a band.
09:17This is, it was already a big project, but we just thought if we have a new song
09:20that comes along with that, it's going to be even more special because yes, we're like,
09:25we want to celebrate the past, but we're also excited about this new chapter that's opening up and,
09:29you know, creating new music and still being relevant and not just, you know,
09:32playing the old hits and, you know, the song was inspired by that whole journey,
09:36that whole 25 years and the, and basically making the movie.
09:43Don't look back.
09:44You may find another clue.
09:47Yeah, this is Scooby-Doo.
09:48What's new Scooby-Doo?
09:49What a cool, that's another cool thing that happened to this band that we,
09:53I mean, that we agreed to do that ended up being such a cool thing.
09:59Way early in the band, before we were famous, before people knew who we were,
10:03we had this opportunity to record the theme song for what's new Scooby-Doo.
10:07And for years, a lot of people didn't even know who was doing the intro for what's new Scooby-Doo.
10:12It wasn't a big thing.
10:13It's really interesting how for years nobody talked about it.
10:16And then again, like, like I'm just a kid, TikTok happened.
10:19Yep.
10:20And then it changed everything.
10:22What's new Scooby-Doo?
10:22People started putting out all the, and they started to say like,
10:24did you guys realize that Simple Plan recorded the most badass cartoon theme of all time?
10:30And that was like the tag on TikTok.
10:32Everybody was like, man, this song slabs and it's amazing and all that.
10:35And it's like, and we never played it live ever.
10:37And then this started to happen and we're like, you know, maybe we should embrace this.
10:41We should give it a shot and see what happens.
10:43And when we play live, like it goes off.
10:45It's like, it has become one of those like moment that people wait for.
10:49You have fans coming up to our show.
10:51They're all dressed up Scooby and then we bring them on stage and they can have that moment.
10:56And they know like the word is kind of kind of going around that.
10:59If you get dressed as a Scooby, you might end up on stage, you might end up on stage with us,
11:02you know, jamming out to the song.
11:03So I don't know.
11:04This song was went from literally like almost 15 years, not even talking about it to like
11:10now one of the highlight of our set.
11:12Last one.
11:15Here we go.
11:17Chuck, you're up.
11:17Uh, yes.
11:20That's a good one to end it.
11:21That's what we end every show with.
11:22Right.
11:22Yeah.
11:23Might as well end this segment with really appropriate.
11:25Song is perfect.
11:26Because we lost it all.
11:28Nothing lasts forever.
11:30I'm sorry.
11:31I can't be perfect.
11:33You want to sing one?
11:35No.
11:35No, I can't.
11:37It would really ruin everything because we lost it all.
11:40See, you don't want that.
11:41There you go.
11:41That's pretty good.
11:42No, that's not bad.
11:43We lost it all.
11:45Nothing lasts forever.
11:48So the song perfect, which is the last song on our first album.
11:52It's the song that we pretty much close every show with.
11:55And it's a song that I think created a bond, a connection with our fans very early on back in
12:002002 that made us into a band that wasn't just going to stick around for a minute and then go away.
12:06Because I think that there's so many fans that come to us and say, like, this song got me through
12:10some difficult times with my parents and you really spoke to me.
12:14And having that deep connection with music, I think it lasts with you for a lifetime.
12:18Yeah, it's it's it's it's really interesting because this was such a personal story.
12:22Like we talked about in the movie a lot about like we were trying to explain to our parents that,
12:28you know, well, I was in law school.
12:30I was, you know, I I really wanted to be in a band and but I had this this school thing going on
12:36and my parents that was very important.
12:38And but for me, it felt like I really have to lean to the music.
12:41This is what we have to do now.
12:42Like this is it's now or never in five years, 10 years, it will be too late.
12:46But law school will still be there. I can go back.
12:48That's where the the whole genesis of the song came from.
12:51One fight, one night, kind of went around and was really mad and trying to figure out,
12:54like, oh, maybe there's some lyrics in there and just came up with this sort of line.
12:58Like, I'm sorry, I can't be your perfect son.
13:00And then I told Pierre and he's like, let's make it.
13:03I'm sorry, I can't be perfect.
13:04Let's let's make it for everyone.
13:05And we really ask ourselves, like, should it be on the record?
13:08Like, is it like, is it us?
13:10Is it too soft?
13:11Yeah, too vulnerable?
13:12And we didn't play it live for the longest time.
13:13And then one show, I remember, I think it was Burlington, Vermont.
13:16We were playing a small show and there was these three, four girls.
13:19I can still see them to my left, like when I was playing drums.
13:22And we started playing the song like, oh, there's not a lot of people here.
13:24Let's try it.
13:25And we started playing it and they started like really like bawling, like crying,
13:29not just a little bit, like full on.
13:31And people could see like the emotion.
13:33They could feel it and they could apply to their own lives.
13:35And this song has changed our career because we went from a,
13:38like Pierre was saying, like sort of like a fun band that had like,
13:41I'd do anything and addicted and all that.
13:43And then it went to a band that had, that people could feel like, oh,
13:47they see me, they understand me.
13:49They, they, they, they're just like me.
