Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Chinese Communist Party leader Cai Qi, an effort to improve ties at governmental, political, and people-to-people levels. The discussions focused on maintaining peaceful borders and enhancing trade, with the Indian Prime Minister noting that "when India and China move together it's not just 1.4 billion people but 2.8 billion people." This engagement comes in a complex geopolitical context, following the Prime Minister's visit to Japan, which is seen as a strong strategic signal. The broadcast explores the India-Japan partnership, covering investments, labour mobility, and defence cooperation, as a counterbalance to China's growing military and regional influence. The central questions remain whether China truly believes in a multipolar Asia and how it intends to move forward on the border issue.

00:00So, there is a very important aspect that Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised.
00:04He said when India and China move together, it's not just 1.4 billion people, but 2.8 billion people.
00:121.4 billion people of India and 1.4 billion people of China, they move forward together.
00:18And that is why peace and tranquility or good relations between the two countries benefits this entire region.
00:24At the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, the effort or the message is the region coming together,
00:32playing a bigger role in global decision making and also benefiting the developing world, the global south.
00:39That's that big message.
00:40Big story coming in.
00:41Prime Minister Narendra Modi, after meeting the Chinese President Xi Jinping,
00:45has also met the leader of the Chinese Communist Party.
00:48Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the Chinese Communist Party leader, Kai Ki, of the Chinese Communist Party.
00:58Now, this is again an effort to take this relationship forward, not just at government to government level,
01:04but political party to political party level, people to people level.
01:08The interaction is with direct flights beginning between India and China, with more trade between the two countries.
01:15The effort is that pluck the low-hanging fruit to improve ties while ensuring that borders remain peaceful.
01:22In fact, that's the point that when a member of the Chinese Politburo and of the Communist Party
01:29and Foreign Minister of China, Wang Yi, also Special Representative on the boundary issue,
01:35when he visited India recently in his interaction with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval,
01:40the message was very clear, that the recent friction at the borders, he said,
01:45did not benefit the people of India and the people of China.
01:49That is why China wants to move forward.
01:51But the devil lies in the detail.
01:55How does China want to move forward?
01:57When China talks of a multipolar world, does it also believe in a multipolar Asia?
02:01Does it believe in two Asian giants rising peacefully together?
02:05There are many, many messages and signals here.
02:08Of course, there is also an opportunity with Trump imposing tariffs on India
02:12and threatening to impose tariffs on China.
02:15What is it that India and China can get out of this together?
02:18Not because of our relationship of, you know, souring with the United States of America,
02:24but India's efforts to improve ties with China and China's efforts to improve ties with India
02:29had begun even before Trump tariffs kicked in.
02:32And that conversation started in 2024 on the sidelines of BRICS Kazan.
02:38I also want to bring in Dr. Sataro Nagavo into this conversation.
02:42He joins us from Japan.
02:44He's someone who watches this region very closely.
02:46India Today's Foreign Affairs editor, Gita Mohan, with me on this special broadcast.
02:50Dr. Sataro, one of the most successful visits of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,
02:56and though virtually every visit has been extremely successful to Japan from 2014
03:01when he'd visited Tokyo to Kyoto,
03:03this current visit, when there's talk of billions of dollars of investment,
03:08of skilled labor and semi-skilled labor,
03:11from space cooperation to defense cooperation moving forward,
03:14how would you view the Japan leg of the visit,
03:18and how would you view the current visit to China, to Tianjin?
03:22We're focusing on the schedule.
03:25The Prime Minister Modi visits Japan before he visits China to join the SCO.
03:32And after SCO, China is preparing the military parade against Japan,
03:38but Prime Minister Modi will not attend and return to India before it.
03:43This schedule has a message.
03:47So even if India try to talk with China about border issue or business issue,
03:55despite this, still there is a problem between India and China,
04:00and cooperate with Japan is good for India.
04:06That schedule indicates such a message.
04:08So that's why, currently, there is a power game in Asia.
04:14And three powers are very important.
04:16China, of course,
04:18but India is most rising important power,
04:21and Japan is also the old power,
04:23declining but still is in the self-restriction and spread presence.
04:28So this year, 80th anniversary after the World War II,
04:34and there are plenty of the anti-Japan movement in China.
04:39And despite this,
04:41Prime Minister Modi choose to come to Japan first,
04:44and after that China.
04:45This means that this is very courageous,
04:48and a strong message from India,
04:50because India is courageous, rising power.
04:53That's a very important aspect that you raised, sir.
05:00You're saying,
05:01one, India is a very courageous power.
05:04India is a rising power.
05:06Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Japan
05:08was a very important signal that was sent out.
05:11You know, before we talk in greater detail
05:14about Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to China,
05:17or let me for a moment focus on his interaction
05:20with Chinese President Xi Jinping,
05:22as an independent analyst,
05:25how do you view what Prime Minister Narendra Modi said,
05:28and what Chinese President Xi Jinping said,
05:30and what this means for the relationship
05:33between the two countries,
05:35the economic relationship between the two countries?
05:39Of course, as a business,
05:42they try to promote,
05:43view from this friendship remark,
05:45that is a good gesture
05:48to temporarily the tension is calming down.
05:52But India today already mentioned
05:54that a peaceful border situation
05:57creates such kind of situation.
05:58Without this, it will not continue.
06:01And another aspect is,
06:02the problem is Pakistan.
06:04Pakistan is a permanent member of the SCO,
06:07and every time,
06:09always arrive China.
06:10And this time,
06:12China is inviting other South Asian countries too,
06:16like Maldives or Nepal.
06:19So these countries,
06:20China's plot is very clear.
06:22They want to expand,
06:24influence country around India.
06:26So view from India,
06:28what is the message is,
06:29of course,
06:30Prime Minister Modi already identified.
06:32So the friendship remark is one thing,
06:35but the background reality is another thing.
06:37Prime Minister carefully calculated this thing,
06:40and of course,
06:42through the negotiation,
06:43he tried to get the benefit,
06:46but at the same time,
06:48still,
06:49he knows that
06:49there is a problem
06:51between two countries.
06:57So,
06:58would China want to see
06:59the rise of a peaceful India,
07:02or in your appreciation,
07:04no?
07:04As you very rightly pointed out,
07:06there are three Asian giants,
07:08so three major economic powers in Asia,
07:12China,
07:12India,
07:13and Japan.
07:14Japan and India are very close,
07:16and I want you to talk a little about
07:19the cooperation between Japan and India,
07:22especially this visit,
07:24the talk of investment in India,
07:26the movement of skilled labor,
07:28and semi-skilled labor from India to Japan,
07:30the defense cooperation between the two countries,
07:32what is the signaling that goes out here,
07:36sir?
07:37This is very strategic,
07:39because China's influence,
07:41China's influence is spread to the global south,
07:44how to deal with it.
07:45India and Japan should cooperate.
07:48Because if both two countries cooperate,
07:51more bigger projects,
07:54we can do that.
07:55And India's location is perfect.
07:57India's influence is spreading
08:00all side of the Indian ocean region now,
08:04the Middle East,
08:05Africa,
08:05of course,
08:05South East Asia also.
08:07Why?
08:08Because India's rising,
08:09because India's location is perfect.
08:11So that's why if Japan invests in India
08:17and create factories,
08:19where is the market?
08:21Of course,
08:21Middle East,
08:22Africa,
08:23and South East Asia,
08:24all of these areas market.
08:26So that's why to develop these countries,
08:30infrastructure projects,
08:32India and Japan,
08:33should cooperate too.
08:35And so when the Prime Minister Modi visits Japan,
08:37that kind of topic has already agreed,
08:41because the Indian side has many projects in Africa,
08:45or India,
08:46Middle East,
08:47Europe,
08:48IMEK project.
08:50Japan side is Japan,
08:52Africa,
08:53Economic Zone initiatives,
08:55they just started.
08:56So in this case,
08:58collaboration between India and Japan
09:01is expanding influence of India
09:05in the global south region.
09:06So that's why this is a big matter.
09:10And defense cooperation also important,
09:12because China is building 148 ships
09:16joining the 2014 to the 2023
09:20Indian naval chief said.
09:23So this 148 is the total number
09:26of the naval ships of the Indian Navy,
09:28and Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force
09:30has the same number.
09:32So that's why China is creating
09:34the same size of the Navy every 10 years,
09:36such kind of speed is very fast
09:39and dangerous for the two countries.
09:41That's why two countries cooperate.
09:43Defense cooperation,
09:44strategic cooperation,
09:46economic cooperation,
09:47everything is very beneficial
09:50for two countries,
09:51but background reality is China.
09:55That is my current situation.
09:58So potential is very big.
09:59Very significant point.
10:00That is important.
10:01That is important.
10:02That is important.
10:05That is important.
