Caroline Irving of Cemetery Road Action Group speaks to
Local Democracy Reporter Julia Armstrong about why her group backs a Sheffield Council parking ban on nearby Montague Street, Sharrow
Transcript
00:00So I'm talking to Caroline Irving who's one of the members of Cemetery Road Action Group known as CRAG
00:05and we're just next to Montague Street Caroline and there's a petition to get
00:12the parking back on this street and your group's opposed to that aren't you can
00:16you tell me why? Well it's kind of nonsense we had parking on here many many years ago
00:22and it led to lots of anti-social behavior lots of litter fly tipping the
00:29parking was used primarily for people working in offices in the local area
00:34starting at seven in the morning and leaving at the evening when the druggies
00:38and people were coming so there's no real call for it in the meantime working in
00:43partnership with the cemetery trust they have lots of events and happenings and
00:50keeping the bit of road clear of extraneous parking mean that they can get in and
00:56efficiently do whatever they need to do and it stops it being an inconvenience
01:01for anybody yeah so there's absolutely no good reason to bring any parking back in
01:06here. The other thing you want to do we're just a way behind you there's a
01:11like a pathway can you tell me about your plans for that as well? Yes there's a
01:14pathway that goes down to goes from Cemetery Road essentially down to Porter
01:21Croft School and the Eckertal Road and it's used by people to cut through down
01:26there for the shops and the buses and or even back up to the hospitals and schools
01:31the other side and it's very steep the bit from between Cemetery Road and Napier Street
01:37at the bottom and it also has the wildlife bit of the open green space and the
01:43cemetery to the other side and we just wanted to make that into a nicer
01:48experience for people coming through maybe make the path a bit windier so if
01:53you're pushing a heavy pushchair it's not quite so daunting yeah and also to put
01:59some extra climbing things in for the younger children and their siblings who
02:03may or may not be at the school so it's part of the climbing Sheffield to balance
02:10with this great big quite typical to climb rock yeah I'm just going to turn around for a
02:14second there's a climbing boulder here which is obviously not a real thing but
02:18it'll add to that so obviously from your point of view having cars here would be a
02:25bit of a disaster really it would be horrible it would interfere with so much
02:29that's happening to make it such a much nicer space there seems to be no good
02:34reason to do so
