00:33are classic and yeah here they are oh yeah yep exactly what we're

00:44talking about okay if you're not sure what's going on right now that means you

01:14sense all right we've got factory fresh coated g12s on the whole kit right now

01:25let's start out with what that sounds like

02:29now coated g12s are basically my favorite batter head for pretty much

02:49everything they're a little bit thicker than a normal 10 mil batter head the coating mellows them out in a

02:54nice kind of way they're a little more durable than a thinner head tons of sustain

02:58while still having a little bit more mass than your standard 10 mil batter head

03:02this makes perfect sense in terms of the physics of it because we've got more mass

03:05and once we get it moving it's gonna sustain for longer it's 20% thicker than a

03:10standard single ply batter head so there's more room for more sustain and

03:14that's kind of the maybe my favorite thing about these heads you know they match

03:18durability and sustain and tone in a really beautiful way now we do a lot of

03:21experiments here and we have some tools but sometimes you just don't have the

03:25right tools or skills for the job and that's where our friend David comes in he

03:29has built up a amazing channel full of just like wild experimentations a lot of

03:33which are centered around drums and a lot of which are centered around drilling

03:36holes in things and you've seen a hundred rivets in a symbol and his low volume

03:41cowbell it looks vaguely like a cheese grater and we decided to hit him up you

03:47know we've been kind of pals on the internet for a while and wanted to do

03:50something with him and so we sent him a set of our favorite heads to kind of

03:53see if we could adjust the tone and dial him in a bit of a different way and now

03:58you're going to get to hear the result

04:14all right so now we've installed the modified heads that we just got from

04:18David they are tuned to exactly the same pitch as the other ones were in the

04:22exact same place so we're not gonna go through a lot of tunings we're just doing a

04:25straight-up comparison of the behavior of these vent hole modified batter heads

06:53now looking at these heads David had a really great idea which is to

07:19not do what you would expect based on vented heads that exist in the market of

07:24having the vents all be the same size and instead he chose to graduate them

07:27from smaller holes on the ten that are nearly the size you'd expect from a

07:31factory vented head down to fairly large ones like you could almost stick a pencil

07:35through on the floor tom now this makes perfect sense because we're dealing with a

07:38whole lot more air that needs to get out of a floor tom there's tons more space in

07:42there so if we want to have that same quickness we do have to graduate them

07:46similar to the way some people choose different head thicknesses or things like that for their

07:49toms what this results in is really really even response from very differently sized drums

07:55so they still sound like a family even though these modifications have been made to

07:58the batter head where a lot of our tone is coming from now we'd like to do a back-to-back

08:02comparison so you can really hear the difference in the change in the note length

08:06but also you can hear how the sort of tone of it is not that different it's almost

08:10more like a gate or something like that

08:40so you can hear the difference between the ears and the ears and the ears but they know the

08:42that one is so much more like that

08:44so you can hear the difference in your mouth's mouth's mouth on the back-to-back

08:47and when you turn around to the right-to-back

08:52just can hear how the sound is coming from now on the right-to-back

08:56because this is very interesting that there are two parts of the right-to-back

11:23maybe non-drummer or non-musician even,

11:25might not necessarily detect

11:27that there's much of a difference here.

11:28They might not detect that there's a difference at all.

11:30But us as artists and as creatives

11:32who are trying to make music, trying to make art,

11:34and trying to find a sound that we love,

11:36that inspires us to play better or differently that day,

11:40these subtle things really do matter.

11:42And where we end up with our sound

11:44is sort of an amalgamation of the little choices we make,

11:46whether it's the thickness or the ply count of your heads,

11:49the tip on your sticks,

11:51or modifying the heads, taking material away,

11:54muffling them, putting rings on there.

11:56All of this stuff takes us to where we're going

11:58to get the sound that's gonna make us play

12:00and create the way that we want to.

12:02A great way to think about these choices,

12:04and both the individual choices and also the collective

12:07that is greater than the sum of the parts,

12:09is it's kind of like presets.

12:11We could get close to these sounds spending time tuning

12:15in the same way that you can get close with two sticks

12:17that aren't quite the same

12:18or two heads that aren't quite the same.

12:19But on the other hand, we were able to swap out

12:22all these batters and tune them to pitch

12:24and have this sound in about 10 minutes.

12:27And if I was trying to modify the heads in real time

12:29that were already on there and go back and forth

12:32and listen and change and listen and change,

12:33it's gonna eat up a ton of time.

12:35Whereas if I brought a second set of heads to the studio,

12:38which I almost always do,

12:39just like an alternative if we need a different sound,

12:42swapping them out is super fast.

12:43And if they're heads I'm familiar with,

12:45I mean you really can't beat that.

12:46It's really a quick change that takes you

12:49into a whole different place.

12:50It's gonna make you make different decisions

12:52and they sound fantastic.

13:03Now if you're new to our channel here,

13:13get closer to a certain sound that we're after.

13:15It's all about experimentation and demystifying

13:18the challenges that exist for drummers,

13:20especially considering that this is an instrument

13:22where a lot of the time,

13:23tuning and tone take a backseat to technique

13:26and styles and things like that.

13:28Whereas you can't really take lessons in guitar

13:31without learning how to tune the guitar,

13:32but you can become a professional drummer

13:34without ever having spent much time

13:35thinking about how to tune the drums.

13:37On the other hand, if you are a long time viewer,

13:41this is kind of par for the course

13:42with things that we like to do here.
