00:00:08Morning by morning, new mercies I see,

00:00:16For I have given thy hand and have provided.

00:00:24Great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me.

00:00:54My name is Philip Jones, I'll introduce myself and tell you a little bit about who I am

00:01:06before we get started in earnest.

00:01:09So I represent PWMI, Prophetic Witness Movement International.

00:01:13If you want to know a little bit more about us, there's our web address there on the slide.

00:01:18And I've got some free copies of our magazine down below.

00:01:24Check those out, take one home and have a look at it,

00:01:26and hopefully you'll be inspired enough to take out a subscription of your own.

00:01:30So that's the advert over, that's the only one I'm going to do this evening.

00:01:34So what is the PWMI then?

00:01:35Well, it was founded in 1970.

00:01:37It's a prophecy organisation founded in 1917 by a group of pastors,

00:01:42including F.B. Meyer, some of you may have heard of him.

00:01:44And they were inspired to do so when they saw in the news

00:01:48that Jerusalem had been captured by the British Army.

00:01:51And they thought this was going to be a wonderful opportunity to,

00:01:54or a pathway to the restoration of the nation of Israel,

00:01:59which they'd been reading about in scriptures.

00:02:01And so they thought that this was a sign that the end times had begun,

00:02:06and that end times prophecies were as relevant then as they ever were.

00:02:10And it was time that they set up an organisation to bring

00:02:12teaching about the return of Christ to the churches

00:02:16as an aid to prayer, to holy living and evangelism.

00:02:21And they're non-denominational and pre-millennial

00:02:25in terms of our interpretation of end times prophecies.

00:02:29And we're exactly the same today, and we have exactly the same mission.

00:02:32So hopefully I'm going to be able to do a bit of that this evening.

00:02:35Now imagine you're going off on a holiday.

00:02:37In fact, you're there, and you're enjoying yourself,

00:02:41and you've heard that it's this beautiful country.

00:02:44So you decide, I want to see this country.

00:02:47I want to see just how beautiful it is,

00:02:49what it is about this countryside that makes it so lovely.

00:02:52So what do you do?

00:02:54Where do you go?

00:02:55That's an open question.

00:02:57Where do you go if you want to see the countryside?

00:03:00You go up.

00:03:04You go up to the nearest hill, to a viewpoint.

00:03:07You climb up a tower.

00:03:09Because it's from the viewpoints that you can see

00:03:10for miles and miles in any direction.

00:03:13And you can see the whole landscape holistically,

00:03:16how it all fits together, the extent of it.

00:03:18And it's up there, in those high points,

00:03:21that you get a sense of the grandeur,

00:03:24the beauty and the power,

00:03:26the majesty of these beautiful landscapes

00:03:28that we have in this country.

00:03:30And there's a few in other parts of the world as well.

00:03:34And you know, you can find those high points in scripture.

00:03:38Places where you can go,

00:03:40where you can see the grandeur,

00:03:42and the power, and the magnificence of our God.

00:03:45Where are they?

00:03:47What scriptures do that?

00:03:49What scriptures give you that view?

00:03:52It's places where you can see God working in power,

00:03:56at scale, intervening in this world,

00:03:59intervening in this universe,

00:04:02raising up nations, destroying armies,

00:04:05saving nations.

00:04:07You find it in the book of Genesis,

00:04:10the creation account,

00:04:12and the flood of Noah's day.

00:04:13But you also find it in prophecy,

00:04:17particularly end times prophecy,

00:04:19where you're going to see the Lord intervening in this world in power,

00:04:23to bring an end to human rebellion and human wickedness.

00:04:26You see his magnificence, his grandeur, and his power on show.

00:04:30Two parts of scripture which are most widely attacked by the liberal wing of the church.

00:04:38Now you know why.

00:04:40We're going to travel to one of those high points in scripture,

00:04:43and look at the grandeur of the Lord.

00:04:45You don't need to turn the television on very long these days before you hear the word Israel mentioned.

00:04:51It's in the news every day.

00:04:53It's in all the newspapers.

00:04:55It seems that little country in the Middle East divides opinion.

00:05:00Some people, perhaps a minority of people, are supportive of it,

00:05:04but a large number of people want to see it destroyed.

00:05:10It divides opinion.

00:05:12And it also divides opinion in the church.

00:05:15There are people in the church, perhaps even the majority in the church,

00:05:20particularly in the West,

00:05:21that believe that modern Israel has no significance

00:05:24in terms of God's eschatological plan.

00:05:29That's a posh word for end of things.

00:05:32They don't believe that Israel has any further role in the redemption of mankind.

00:05:38They don't think Israel has any role in God's kingdom,

00:05:41which he's going to establish on the earth.

00:05:44And these people fall into a camp that follow what's known as replacement theology.

00:05:50It's a doctrine that says that because the Jews,

00:05:54the majority of the population,

00:05:56and the religious leaders of the Jews in the first century past time,

00:06:01because they rejected the Lord Jesus as their saviour,

00:06:04because they rejected him as Messiah,

00:06:06that the Lord not only withdrew the promise of the messianic kingdom from that generation,

00:06:12but he cast Israel aside for all time and for all purposes.

00:06:17And all the promises that he'd made to Israel through the patriarchs in the covenants

00:06:23were transferred to the church.

00:06:25And the role that he had in mind for Israel also transferred to the church.

00:06:31In fact, it's fair to say that all the blessings that were offered to Israel,

00:06:35the church gets.

00:06:36And all the curses that were threatened to Israel,

00:06:39they keep.

00:06:40Now, we in the premillennial camp,

00:06:46premillennial simply means that we believe in the return of the Lord Jesus Christ

00:06:50before the millennial reign,

00:06:52the 1,000 year reign of Messiah on the earth.

00:06:56We don't believe that at all.

00:06:57We believe that, yes,

00:06:59when the Jews rejected Jesus as their Messiah in the first century,

00:07:03he did withdraw the offer of the messianic kingdom for that generation.

00:07:07But he said at the time that he's going to give it to a people

00:07:11that will bear the fruit of it.

00:07:13And what he meant by that was a future generation of Israel.

00:07:18And we believe that prophecies,

00:07:21lots and lots of prophecies throughout scripture,

00:07:24foretell of this,

00:07:26the restoration of the nation of Israel,

00:07:28both in terms of its physical restoration and its spiritual restoration.

00:07:32Now, those in the replacement theology camp,

00:07:38replacement theology is one name for what they believe,

00:07:40this doctrine sometimes,

00:07:42what do they call it?

00:07:44Supersessionism,

00:07:45sometimes fulfillment theology,

00:07:46but it all amounts to the same things.

00:07:49How can they miss?

00:07:51We in the premillennial camp,

00:07:52we can't understand how replacement theology believers

00:07:54can't see the truth in these prophecies.

00:07:57And the reason they can't is because they have got an inconsistent hermeneutic.

00:08:03What do I mean by that?

00:08:04It means that they're inconsistent in the way they interpret prophetic scriptures.

00:08:09So if there is a prophetic scripture

00:08:11where the prophecy is obviously fulfilled in the past,

00:08:15they say,

00:08:16oh yes,

00:08:17we interpret that literally.

00:08:19We use the standard method of interpreting scripture.

00:08:23We take the plain meaning as the truth.

00:08:25But whenever they encounter a prophecy

00:08:27which obviously has not yet been fulfilled,

00:08:30therefore relating to the end times,

00:08:32they say,

00:08:33no,

00:08:33we don't interpret that literally.

00:08:35We interpret it allegorically or spiritually.

00:08:39So if we see the word Israel mentioned in that prophecy,

00:08:42that means the church.

00:08:45Now,

00:08:46they have a problem in that

00:08:48there are prophecies which talk about the restoration

00:08:51of the nation of Israel physically,

00:08:54the political Israel.

00:08:57And if they consistently applied their inconsistent hermeneutic,

00:09:02they would say,

00:09:03aha,

00:09:03this prophecy is now being fulfilled in history

00:09:07and therefore we need to interpret that prophecy literally

00:09:10instead of allegorically.

00:09:12But they don't.

00:09:14And when asked why they don't,

00:09:17they say this,

00:09:18we can't do that

00:09:19because God said in the law

00:09:22that he was only going to draw the Jews back

00:09:25from the scattering amongst the nations

00:09:27to the land

00:09:28once there had been corporate repentance.

00:09:32And they point to scriptures like this

00:09:34in Deuteronomy 31 to 3.

00:09:37Now,

00:09:37at the end of the law

00:09:38which Moses gave to the Jews

00:09:40on Mount Sinai

00:09:41when he constituted them as a nation,

00:09:43right at the very end

00:09:45there's a kind of appendix

00:09:46or an annex

00:09:47and it's called

00:09:48The Blessings and Curses.

00:09:50And it talks about

00:09:51how God is going to bless

00:09:52the people of Israel

00:09:53in the land

00:09:55if they're faithful to him

00:09:56and remain faithful to him.

00:09:59But then it also talks about the curses

00:10:00which says

00:10:01what he's going to do to them

00:10:03if they are willfully rebellious

00:10:05towards him.

00:10:08And one of the consequences,

00:10:10the final consequence,

00:10:12is he's going to drive them out of the land

00:10:13and scatter them amongst the nations.

00:10:15And of course he did that

00:10:16in the first century

00:10:18starting in AD 70

00:10:20and completing in AD 30.

00:10:22And he says this,

00:10:24With all these blessings and curses

00:10:25I have set before you

00:10:26come on you

00:10:27and you take them to heart

00:10:29wherever the Lord God disperses you

00:10:31among the nations

00:10:32and when you and your children

00:10:34return to the Lord,

00:10:35your God,

00:10:36and obey him with all your heart

00:10:37and with all your soul

00:10:38according to everything

00:10:40I command you today

00:10:41then the Lord your God

00:10:42will restore your fortunes

00:10:44and have compassion on you

00:10:45and gather you again

00:10:47from all the nations

00:10:47where he scattered you.

00:10:50And what the people

00:10:51in the replacement camp say,

00:10:52replacement theology camp say

00:10:54is they didn't do that.

00:10:56They're back in the land

00:10:57in unbelief.

00:10:58They have the same attitudes

00:10:59towards Jesus

00:11:00and his claim to be Messiah

00:11:01as they did in the first century

00:11:03when God cast them out of the land.

00:11:06And therefore,

00:11:06modern Israel

00:11:08can't be the work of God

00:11:09and therefore

00:11:11it's an affront to God

00:11:12or at best

00:11:13it's meaningless.

00:11:16So,

00:11:17we have a challenge today.

00:11:19This is our challenge today.

00:11:20We're going to do a bit of research

00:11:21through the scriptures

00:11:22and we're going to try

00:11:23and prove them wrong.

00:11:25And we're going to do that

00:11:26by looking at

00:11:28scriptures

00:11:29which foretell

00:11:31the modern state of Israel

00:11:32as it exists today.

00:11:33The modern state of Israel

00:11:36is unique.

00:11:37There are a number

00:11:38of very unique characteristics

00:11:40about it

00:11:40such as the attitude

00:11:42of the international community

00:11:44towards it.

00:11:45Such as the way

00:11:46in which it

00:11:47came together

00:11:48as a nation

00:11:49over a long period of time.

00:11:51Such as the rebuilding

00:11:52of Dalek towns

00:11:53and cities.

00:11:54There aren't other nations

00:11:55in the world

00:11:56that have had that experience

00:11:57or have those qualities.

00:11:59So,

00:12:00what we're going to do is

00:12:01we're going to identify

00:12:02a list of those qualities.

00:12:03You can see them on the slide

00:12:04as long as you can see

00:12:06that,

00:12:06read the writing,

00:12:07it's fairly small.

00:12:09We're going to look

00:12:09at those characteristics

00:12:10and we're going to try

00:12:11and find prophecies

00:12:12in the Old Testament

00:12:14and in the New

00:12:15which match those,

00:12:18which predict

00:12:18those characteristics

00:12:19in detail.

00:12:22Not just vaguely

00:12:23but in detail.

00:12:25But really,

00:12:26that isn't enough.

00:12:27We also need to find

00:12:29prophecies which predict

00:12:30that God is going to

00:12:32bring the Jews

00:12:32back to the land

00:12:33in unbelief.

00:12:36Because that is the main

00:12:37crux of the argument

00:12:38replacement theology

00:12:39people have.

00:12:41And then,

00:12:43to cap it all,

00:12:44we've got to come out

00:12:44with a plausible explanation

00:12:46for why

00:12:47he's going to go against

00:12:49the curse in the law

00:12:51and bring them back

00:12:52in unbelief.

00:12:54Tall order?

00:12:55I think we can do it.

00:12:57Don't worry.

00:12:57Okay.

00:13:04Many people believe

00:13:05that the nation of Israel

00:13:06came into existence

00:13:07like that.

00:13:08And politically,

00:13:09it did.

00:13:11Just after the

00:13:12Second World War,

00:13:13they announced

00:13:14that they were a nation,

00:13:15they were recognised

00:13:16by the United States

00:13:16and there they were

00:13:17amongst the nations

00:13:19of the world.

00:13:19A nation springing

00:13:20into existence

00:13:21in a day.

00:13:22And there's a prophecy

00:13:23about that.

00:13:23But actually,

00:13:26God's been recreating

00:13:27that nation

00:13:27over a long period

00:13:28of time.

00:13:29And the Jews

00:13:30started to come back

00:13:31to the land

00:13:32in the 1880s,

00:13:33in the very early

00:13:341880s.

00:13:35I think 1881

00:13:36was the first year

00:13:37that Jews

00:13:38began to come back.

00:13:38And there's a picture

00:13:39on the slide

00:13:39on the left

00:13:40showing you

00:13:41some of the very

00:13:41earliest immigrants

00:13:43back to Israel.

00:13:44These are people

00:13:44coming from Ukraine,

00:13:46coming ashore in Jaffa

00:13:47in 1882.

00:13:50And that process

00:13:51is still going on.

00:13:53And there's a picture

00:13:54on the right

00:13:54showing some of

00:13:55the French Jews,

00:13:5730,000 of them

00:13:58that have come back

00:13:58to Israel

00:13:59in the last 10 years.

00:14:01Do you know

00:14:02that there are

00:14:0229 Jews

00:14:04arriving in Israel

00:14:05from the nations

00:14:06every single day?

00:14:07Right now.

00:14:09This process

00:14:09has been going on

00:14:10for 143 years.

00:14:13and counting.

00:14:14And there's

00:14:14a little graph

00:14:15that shows you

00:14:16the number of Jews

00:14:17that have been

00:14:17coming back

00:14:18every year

00:14:19to Israel

00:14:20since 1948.

00:14:22Lots and lots

00:14:23of them.

00:14:23Millions of them.

00:14:25And you can see

00:14:25two big spikes

00:14:27in that graph.

00:14:29The first one

00:14:29just after 1948

00:14:31occurred when

00:14:33the Muslim Arab

00:14:34nations

00:14:35were so enraged

00:14:36that Israel

00:14:37had become a nation

00:14:38again

00:14:38and that they'd

00:14:39failed to destroy it.

00:14:41They turned their anger

00:14:42against the Jews

00:14:43in their own country

00:14:43and expelled them all.

00:14:45And over 600,000 Jews

00:14:47were similarly expelled

00:14:48from those nations

00:14:51and many of them

00:14:52found their home

00:14:53in Israel.

00:14:54And the second spike

00:14:55comes in the 1990s

00:14:57and follows the fall

00:14:58of the Soviet Union.

00:15:00And there were

00:15:00very draconian laws

00:15:02in the Soviet Union

00:15:03that made it

00:15:04almost impossible

00:15:05for Jews

00:15:06to leave the country.

00:15:07They weren't banned

00:15:07but if they tried

00:15:09to leave

00:15:09they had to hand over

00:15:10all their property

00:15:11before they went

00:15:11and if they failed

00:15:13to get the right

00:15:14to leave

00:15:14they were treated

00:15:15as traitors

00:15:16and maybe lost

00:15:17their jobs

00:15:17and their place

00:15:18in society.

00:15:19So no one tried.

00:15:21But when the Soviet Union

00:15:21collapsed

00:15:22then they started

00:15:23to leave

00:15:24and that's that

00:15:24second spike.

00:15:26And I believe

00:15:27this data goes up

00:15:28to 2023

00:15:29and I believe

00:15:31that we're going

00:15:31to see another spike

00:15:32in the years to come

00:15:33with Jews

00:15:35flocking back

00:15:35to Israel

00:15:36this time

00:15:37from the liberal

00:15:38democracies of the West

00:15:40because of increasing

00:15:42persecution

00:15:42that they're experiencing.

00:15:45There's now

00:15:469.4 million of them there.

00:15:497.2 million of them

00:15:50are Jews.

00:15:522.2 million of them

00:15:53are non-Jews.

00:15:56Mainly

00:15:57the Palestinians.

00:16:00So

00:16:00is there a prophecy

00:16:02in Scripture

00:16:03that foretells

00:16:05of this staged

00:16:06reconstruction

00:16:07of the nation.

00:16:09The staged

00:16:09bringing of the people

00:16:10back to the land

00:16:11over a long period

00:16:12of time.

00:16:14And there is.

00:16:15Many of you

00:16:15may already know this.

00:16:17Ezekiel 37

00:16:18verses 7 to 13

00:16:20says this.

00:16:21So this is the

00:16:22Valley of Dry Bones

00:16:23prophecy.

00:16:24This is where

00:16:25God in a vision

00:16:26showed Israel

00:16:27Ezekiel

00:16:29a valley

00:16:30and the floor

00:16:31of which was littered

00:16:32with millions of dry bones

00:16:33and he asked him

00:16:34to prophesy over the bones

00:16:36and as he was prophesying

00:16:38he heard a sound

00:16:39a rattling sound

00:16:40and the bones

00:16:41came together

00:16:42bone to bone.

00:16:43I looked

00:16:44says Ezekiel

00:16:45and tenders

00:16:45and flesh appeared

00:16:46on them

00:16:47and skin covered them

00:16:49but there was no

00:16:50breath in them.

00:16:50then he said to me

00:16:52son of man

00:16:53these bones

00:16:53are the people

00:16:54of Israel

00:16:54they say

00:16:56our bones

00:16:56are dried up

00:16:57and our hope

00:16:57is gone

00:16:58we are cut

00:16:58off

00:16:59therefore prophesy

00:17:00and say to them

00:17:01this is what

00:17:02the sovereign

00:17:02Lord says

00:17:03my people

00:17:04I am going

00:17:05to open your

00:17:05graves

00:17:05and bring you

00:17:06up from them

00:17:06I will bring you

00:17:08back to the land

00:17:08of Israel

00:17:09then you

00:17:10my people

00:17:11that I am

00:17:12will know

00:17:12that I am

00:17:13the Lord

00:17:13when I open

00:17:14your graves

00:17:14and bring you

00:17:15up for them

00:17:15so the part

00:17:18of that vision

00:17:18which relates

00:17:19to the bringing

00:17:20of the Jews

00:17:20back to the land

00:17:21is the bodies

00:17:22reforming

00:17:24first the skeletons

00:17:26come together

00:17:27bone to bone

00:17:27tenders

00:17:28sinews

00:17:29cartilage

00:17:30then muscle

00:17:31and other types

00:17:32of flesh

00:17:33and then skin

00:17:33covers them

00:17:34they are still

00:17:35dead

00:17:35they are corpses

00:17:36but they are whole

00:17:37so that represents

00:17:39the physical

00:17:40restoration

00:17:40of the nation

00:17:41the spiritual

00:17:42restoration

00:17:43comes later

00:17:44by a different

00:17:44process

00:17:45so that prophecy

00:17:46exactly predicts

00:17:48thousands of years

00:17:49before time

00:17:50because this was

00:17:51given to Ezekiel

00:17:52when the nation

00:17:53of Israel

00:17:54or Judah

00:17:54was in captivity

00:17:56in Babylon

00:17:57thousands of years

00:17:59before the event

00:18:00the way in which

00:18:01he would bring

00:18:02the people

00:18:02back to the land

00:18:03was foretold

00:18:04now rather than

00:18:06dive around

00:18:07to different places

00:18:08in scripture

00:18:08to find prophecies

00:18:10which match

00:18:11the characteristics

00:18:11of modern Israel

00:18:12I picked this one

00:18:14to get us started

00:18:15because there are

00:18:16a number of

00:18:16characteristics

00:18:17of the restored

00:18:18nation

00:18:18in this single

00:18:20piece of scripture

00:18:20and I've underlined

00:18:22them

00:18:22and this is

00:18:23Ezekiel again

00:18:24chapter 36

00:18:258 to 11

00:18:27I'll read it

00:18:28but you

00:18:29mountains of Israel

00:18:30will produce

00:18:30branches

00:18:31and fruit

00:18:32for my people

00:18:33for they will

00:18:34soon come home

00:18:35I am concerned

00:18:36for you

00:18:37and I will

00:18:37look on you

00:18:38with favour

00:18:38you will be

00:18:39ploughed and sown

00:18:40and I will cause

00:18:41many people

00:18:42to live on you

00:18:42yes

00:18:43all of Israel

00:18:44now that's a point

00:18:46worth remembering

00:18:46all of Israel

00:18:48and at the moment

00:18:49only 46%

00:18:50of world

00:18:51jewelry

00:18:51are back

00:18:52in the land

00:18:53that means

00:18:54we're only

00:18:54halfway there

00:18:55in terms of

00:18:56reconstructing

00:18:57that nation

00:18:58the towns

00:18:59will be inhabited

00:19:00and the ruins

00:19:01rebuilt

00:19:01I will increase

00:19:02the number of

00:19:03people and animals

00:19:03living in you

00:19:04they will be fruitful

00:19:06and become numerous

00:19:07I will settle

00:19:08people on you

00:19:08as in the past

00:19:09and I will make you

00:19:10prosper

00:19:11more than before

00:19:13so a bunch

00:19:15of characteristics

00:19:16there

00:19:16we're going to look

00:19:17at modern Israel

00:19:17to see whether

00:19:19they align

00:19:19and the first

00:19:21we're going to look

00:19:22at is

00:19:22the rebuilding

00:19:23of the

00:19:25ruined towns

00:19:26and the

00:19:27reoccupation

00:19:28of the land

00:19:29now

00:19:31when the Jews

00:19:33started coming

00:19:33back to Israel

00:19:34in 1880s

00:19:35there were only

00:19:37about 175,000

00:19:38people in total

00:19:39living in the

00:19:41land of Palestine

00:19:41including the West Bank

00:19:43and about 20,000

00:19:44to 30,000

00:19:45of them were Jews

00:19:46and they were

00:19:47mostly living

00:19:48in Jerusalem

00:19:49and then

00:19:51the whole land

00:19:52was derelict

00:19:53and most

00:19:54of the towns

00:19:54and cities

00:19:55were largely

00:19:56derelict

00:19:57as well

00:19:57not always

00:19:59completely derelict

00:20:00they would become

00:20:02archaeological sites

00:20:03there was usually

00:20:44occupied the land

00:20:48and it's been

00:20:50continuously occupied

00:20:51to some extent

00:20:52since then

00:20:53in Jesus' time

00:20:55it was a Roman

00:20:56colony city

00:20:57it was their main

00:20:58port

00:20:59to get supplies

00:21:00into Israel

00:21:01when Israel

00:21:02rebelled against

00:21:03their rule

00:21:03in AD 70

00:21:04and 130

00:21:05they used that

00:21:07port to bring

00:21:07the Roman legions

00:21:08in to crush

00:21:09the rebellion

00:21:10and they renamed

00:21:12it because they

00:21:13put their own

00:21:13people there

00:21:14usually retired

00:21:15soldiers

00:21:16they gave it

00:21:16the grand name

00:21:17of Colonia

00:21:19Ptolemy

00:21:20Germanicus

00:21:21Stabilis

00:21:22it's catchy

00:21:23that isn't it

00:21:24can you imagine

00:21:25that on a signpost

00:21:26thankfully

00:21:27everyone adopted

00:21:28the name Ptolemy

00:21:29as its name

00:21:31and we see

00:21:31that mentioned

00:21:32in various places

00:21:33in scripture

00:21:34including the

00:21:35book of Acts

00:21:35in the

00:21:38Casada period

00:21:39it was the main

00:21:40port they used

00:21:41to bring their

00:21:42forces in

00:21:42to do battle

00:21:43with the Muslims

00:21:44to try to free

00:21:45Jerusalem

00:22:19a flourishing

00:22:20modern town

00:22:21that pattern

00:22:24was replicated

00:22:25all over the land

00:22:26including in Jerusalem

00:22:27God predicted

00:22:28long before

00:22:30he cast the nation

00:22:31of Israel

00:22:31out of the land

00:22:32that the land

00:22:33would become derelict

00:22:34and a ruin

00:22:34and that's exactly

00:22:35what happened

00:22:36we don't have

00:22:37much information

00:22:38about what that

00:22:39was like

00:22:40before the

00:22:41British mandate period

00:22:42because the place

00:22:43was such a backwater

00:22:45it was owned

00:22:46by the Ottomans

00:22:47most of the land

00:22:48was owned

00:22:48by absentees

00:22:49who lived in the

00:22:50big cities

00:22:51in the Ottoman Empire

00:22:52there were only

00:22:53175,000 people

00:22:55in the land

00:22:55I doubt whether

00:22:56much more than

00:22:58about 5%

00:22:59of the land

00:22:59was actually

00:23:00cultivated

00:23:01and we have

00:23:03testimony from

00:23:04travel writers

00:23:05who went through

00:23:06Israel in the

00:23:0719th century

00:23:07and earlier

00:23:08which testify

00:23:09to this fact

00:23:10some of them

00:23:11quite famous

00:23:12but I'm going to

00:23:12point out the

00:23:13writings of one

00:23:14guy

00:23:14a British Jew

00:23:15called Israel

00:23:16Zangwill

00:23:17you can see them

00:23:18in the photo there

00:23:19looking extremely

00:23:20distinguished and

00:23:21handsome

00:23:21and he was a

00:23:23playwright

00:23:23and a travel writer

00:23:24and he travelled

00:23:25through the land

00:23:26and he described

00:23:26it as a wilderness

00:23:28a stony desolation

00:23:30a deserted home

00:23:31and a land

00:23:32that had gone

00:23:33to ruin

00:23:34and by the time

00:23:35we have the first

00:23:36survey of land

00:23:38use in that

00:23:38country

00:23:39in 1943

00:23:40end of the

00:23:41British Mandate

00:23:42just 17%

00:23:44of the land

00:23:44was being

00:23:45cultivated

00:23:46and remember

00:23:47there had been

00:23:4860 years of

00:23:49Jewish immigration

00:23:49to the land

00:23:50already by that

00:23:51point

00:23:51and still

00:23:52only 17%

00:23:53of the land

00:23:54was being

00:23:54cultivated

00:23:55things are

00:23:57very very

00:23:58different today

00:23:59only 20%

00:24:01of the land

00:24:02Israel is

00:24:02actually

00:24:03naturally suited

00:24:04to arable

00:24:04cropping

00:24:05because of a

00:24:06shortage of

00:24:07water

00:24:07so the country

00:24:08itself is

00:24:09either arid

00:24:09or semi-arid

00:24:10but today

00:24:13nearly 30%

00:24:14of the land

00:24:15is being cultivated

00:24:16for arable

00:24:17agriculture

00:24:18which is

00:24:19quite an

00:24:20impressive

00:24:20achievement

00:24:21when you

00:24:21consider

00:24:22that 60%

00:24:23of the nation

00:24:24is sheer

00:24:24desert

00:24:25and can't

00:24:25grow anything

00:24:26and in that

00:24:27figure there

00:24:28all the area

00:24:29below that

00:24:31is the

00:24:31Negev desert

00:24:32where nothing

00:24:32can grow

00:24:33and they've

00:24:35achieved this

00:24:35miracle

00:24:37areas by the

00:24:41only talking

00:24:41about the

00:32:18all sorts

00:32:20and explain

00:32:20why they

00:32:23God intervening

00:32:23either

00:32:24they said

00:32:25that Britain

00:32:26France and

00:32:27America

00:32:27intervened in

00:32:28the war

00:32:28secretly to

00:32:29beat them

00:32:30because these

00:32:31are the three

00:32:31countries supplying

00:32:32Israel with their

00:32:32arms

00:32:33but in actual

00:32:34fact the

00:32:34opposite was
