00:00Chinese leader Xi Jinping and North Korea's Kim Jong-un have pledged to deepen strategic coordination in the first formal summit in six years.
00:11She met Kim at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing Thursday and hosted him for tea and dinner afterwards, according to Chinese state media.
00:21The summit could hint at a restoration of ties between the two states after they grew more distant in recent years.
00:27The readout from the meeting did not mention the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula as previous ones have.
00:35North Korea's nuclear weapons program has transformed Pyongyang into the most heavily sanctioned state in the world.
00:43However, Russia and to a lesser extent China have become less openly critical of that program in recent years as tensions with Western powers have risen.
00:53In 2022, China and Russia for the first time vetoed a U.S.-led resolution at the UN Security Council calling for additional sanctions on North Korea over its renewed ballistic missile launches.
