Step back into the summer of 1984 at Old Trafford, Manchester, where Winston Davis produced a career-best batting display for the West Indies. Sent in as a nightwatchman by captain Clive Lloyd, Davis surprised everyone with a remarkable 77 off 146 balls, spanning 180 minutes, decorated with 10 fours and a six.
His partnership of 170 runs with Gordon Greenidge brightened a gloomy second day, setting the foundation for West Indies’ mammoth total of 500. That score proved more than enough to secure victory by an innings and 64 runs against England.
Winston Davis, better known for his fast bowling, showed his all-round value on this occasion, reminding cricket lovers of the extraordinary depth of the West Indies squad in the 1980s. Relive this rare gem of cricketing history and enjoy the elegance, resilience, and charm of a forgotten Caribbean hero.
00:00In this rare footage, we are transported back to Old Trafford, Manchester, July 1984.
00:06The fourth test match between England and the mighty West Indies.
00:09The stage belonged unexpectedly to Winston Davis.
00:13Sent in by skipper Clive Lyde as a night watchman, Winston Davis was expected to merely see of
00:18the shine.
00:19Instead, he blossomed into an unlikely hero, carving out a memorable inning of 77 runs
00:25from 146 balls in 180 minutes, laced with 10-4s and a soaring sack.
00:31On a day plagued by interruption for bad light, Winston Davis brightened the gloom with a career-based
00:37effort, sharing a crucial six-wicket partnership of 170 runs with the indomitable Gordon Greenwich.
00:44Early in his stay, he survived testing spells from Ian Botham, Norman Covins, and Paul Allard.
00:50So sit back, watch, and relish this forgotten gem of West Indies Cricket.

01:45beautiful shot through the offside
01:53and some great work in the field
02:00and that's brought the biggest round of applause in the morning as you would expect from the local boy Graham Fowler
02:06really was a magnificent piece of work there
02:10so many people would have given that away before

06:58Another excellent shot here. See how still he keeps. Keeps his head still.
07:06Nick Cook is coming on from the Warwick Road end. Busy sorting Herdy's field.
07:12Decides at the moment.
07:16So there's a very deep mid-wicket out on the boundary. There's a deep square leg.
07:24Both of them stays at slip. It's about to be joined by Gower plus a short leg.
07:33He does decide to have a swing. It's a brave man at short leg there.
07:46Quite sure Harold Bird's set in the field at the moment.
07:54He's brought the poke off a bit squarer.
07:56He's brought the poke off a bit squarer.
08:06All that elaboration on the leg side field short but outside the off stump.
08:10And that's wiped away for four.
08:14Four to six now to Winston-Davis.
08:28Shots that very finely. Couldn't have been missing by more than an inch or so.
08:42I think we'll find this is very close indeed. About an inch at the most.
08:54One more run added to take the score at lunch up to 342 for five.
09:05It's going to be safe.
09:08Just a yard in it for Chris Broad. He made good ground.
09:12But it also gives Winston-Davis his half century.
09:16And that is a very good innings from the man listed to come in.
09:20In this West Indian line up at number 11.
09:32Nick Cook.
09:34Well done. Well fielded. Saved runs there. Ian Botham.
09:43Just flicked down his gloves on the way through.
09:58Oh, it's gone down. And what disappointment for Nick Cook.
10:01They're never easy but it was straight forward enough to Alan Lamb away to his left hand side.
10:09Winston-Davis didn't really get hold of it properly.
10:13Norman Cowan just got the job now.
10:16Try and break this partnership.
10:22There's the full toss. That's four runs.
10:25Nice friendly delivery.
10:27And we might well see another spurt from Winston-Davis now.
10:36That really was an excellent shot because they're not that easy to pick up.
10:41But he hit that like a rocket.
10:47I think one of the Dodgers would have been proud of that, Tom.
10:49Pocock now has the chance to bowl into the breeze.
10:56Cook had that opportunity a little earlier.
10:59We've got shin guards on.
11:11Boxers.
11:13Face guards.
11:15Helmets.
11:17Still the Bassman managers to get through.
11:19Six of the best.
11:20And an umbrella or two up at the moment.
11:33Coming up towards tea time.
11:4925 past three now.
11:51Tea at 3.40.
11:524.37 will fire.
11:53They've seen no English success.
11:54Here's Pocock.
11:56Falling.
11:58And he thoroughly deserved that Pat Pocock.
12:00At long last, he might say.
12:02And in fact, he's probably saying so.
12:06What a good innings from Winston-Davis.
12:09Within 23 of his century, that might sound a lot.
12:12But it's a great achievement for number 11 to come in as night watchman yesterday evening.
12:27And back right through until just before tea the following day.
12:31Must be a very pleased young man.
12:33Brought him to the side in place of Marshall who was injured.
12:37And out now at the 77 bowled by Pat Pocock who thoroughly deserved a success.
12:46And one of those innings that will be remembered any time a tail-ender or a night watchman comes out and does something similar.
12:55They say, well, remember Winston-Davis at Old Traff at 984.
12:59But once settled, he played with freedom, confidence and resolve.
13:02His inning was more than a personal triumph.
13:05It provided the backbone for West Indies, imposing first-inning total of 500.
13:10A score that would eventually crush England by an innings and 64 runs.
13:15For connoisseurs of cricket, watching Winston-Davis in full flow is a pure delight.
13:19A reminder of the depth and strength of that fabled West Indies squad of the 1980s.
13:26In any other time or for any other country, Winston-Davis would surely have been a regular fixture in test whites.
13:33But fate placed him alongside a galaxy of fast-boiling greats.
13:37His opportunities limited by the sheer abundance of Caribbean riches.
13:42Yet on that Manchester day in 1984, Winston-Davis stepped out of a shadow and left his imprints on test history.
13:50A night watchman he may have been, but his innings shone with the morning light of unexpected brilliance.
13:55Winston-Davis was a tall right-arm fast-boiler from St. Winston's, who briefly shone in the powerful West Indies side of the 1980s.
14:04He was best remembered for his record-breaking 7-for-51 against Australia in the 1983 World Cup.
14:11He possessed pace and bounds, but found regular opportunities scarce as the West Indies already boosted a fearsome battery of quick-ballers.
14:18A capable lower-order best man, he occasionally produced valuable runs.
14:24Winston-Davis remains a respectable figure in Caribbean cricket, a reminder of the extraordinary depth of the talent of the Western days enjoyed during their cold era.
