The Marías Talk On Being Nominated for Best New Artist & Define Being Alternative Artists| MTV VMAs 2025

The Marías caught up with Billboard’s Kyle Denis on the red carpet of the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards.

00:04Doing great, how are you?

00:06Not too bad, not too bad. I mean, I'm with VMA-nominated artists right now. Best alternative.

00:12What does that mean to you guys to be recognized by MTV for your work this year?

00:17I mean, good.

00:19It's really special. We've always wanted to be nominated in an alternative category, so it feels really good for us.

00:25It's nice to celebrate something as a band and reflect on all the years we've been together and everything we've gone through together.

00:32It's a special night.

00:35Best new artist. We hardly feel like a new artist. We're almost 10 years in and it's just cool to be here. This is so fun.

00:41From booking our own shows at Pizza Parlors to now being nominated as Best New Artist is pretty cool.

00:48I'm going to ask you guys to define the word alternative for me. What does that mean to you guys individually?

00:53Start over there.

00:56I guess just different from pop. Not necessarily popular music, but can be perceived in a mainstream way, I guess.

01:05I would have to agree entirely with Jessie. Yeah, I think just something a little bit different.

01:12A little left of center.

01:15It honestly doesn't mean much to me.

01:17At this juncture. I'm just happy we're in it and I'm happy we're considering it.

01:21And we're all happy that you guys are here and nominated tonight.
