00:00Prince Harry's meeting with his father King Charles on 10th September, the first in over a
00:08year and a half, could herald a reconciliation after five years of bitter accusations following
00:15the couple's departure from Britain in 2020. Here are the key moments of the transatlantic royal
00:21dispute. In 2019, one year after Prince Harry and Californian actress Meghan Markle tied the knot,
00:37the first clouds began to gather. The couple sued several British tabloids for invasion of privacy.
00:44In a documentary broadcast on British channel ITV, Harry spoke of tensions with his brother
00:50Prince William, while Meghan discussed the difficulties she had coping with the pressure
00:55of joining the royal family. On January 8th, 2020, Harry and Meghan, who were given the titles Duke
01:09and Duchess of Sussex by Queen Elizabeth II on their wedding day, announced on Instagram that they
01:16wanted to step back from most of their royal duties, divide their time between the UK and North America
01:22and become financially independent. Queen Elizabeth refused the arrangement. On March,
01:28they made their last appearance with the royal family. They could no longer use their royal highness
01:33titles and lost the police protection and public funding they had enjoyed as members of the royal
01:39family. They moved briefly to Vancouver, Canada, before buying a house in Montecito, California.
01:46They also signed multi-year deals with media platforms Netflix and Spotify worth millions of dollars.
01:59On March 7th, 2021, an explosive interview with American talk show Queen Oprah Winfrey aired,
02:07in which Meghan said she had contemplated taking her life after joining the royal family. The couple also
02:14insinuated that the royal family was racist, claiming that a member of the family raised a question
02:19about the skin color of their son before he was born, as Meghan is mixed race. The palace did not
02:26comment, but the interview further damaged hopes for mending ties. In September that year,
02:32Harry initiated legal proceedings in connection with the loss of his police protection in the UK.
02:46On September 8th, 2022, Queen Elizabeth II died. Harry travelled to Scotland alone,
02:53after the rest of the royal family, because he was not immediately notified.
02:57On September 10th that year, William and his wife Catherine, Harry and Meghan,
03:02went together to greet the public in Windsor, trying to project an image of unity after the
03:08death of the sovereign. But the two couples barely spoke to each other. In December,
03:13Netflix released the documentary Harry and Meghan, in which the couple continued their
03:18criticism of the royal family, with Harry accusing them of failing to protect his wife.
03:24On January 10th, 2023, Harry published his memoir, Spare, a global bestseller, in which he recounted his
03:40childhood, settled scores with William, and criticised his sister-in-law Catherine and his
03:45stepmother Camilla. He launched a new lawsuit against British tabloid newspapers for illegal wiretapping.
03:54On February 5th, 2024, Harry crossed the Atlantic to visit his father, after learning that the king
04:07was suffering from cancer, for which he is still undergoing treatment.
04:11On May 2nd, 2025, Harry lost his UK appeal to regain police protection. After the blow,
04:27he told the BBC that he wanted to reconcile with his family, but that his 76-year-old father was no
04:34longer speaking to him. I don't know how much time my father has left, he added.
