Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff with alongside Liberal Minister Eric Abetz and Kerry Vincent at the Longford Football Club speaks about the release of Tasmania Planning Commission report on Macquarie Point Stadium. Video by Josh Goodyer
00:00We will ensure, as we've always done, that the Macquarie Point Stadium and all the dreams and the aspirations and the economic and social opportunities presented with the Macquarie Point Stadium, the precinct and indeed the Tasmanian Devils footy team will come to fruition when it comes to those matters that were concerning Tasmanians around safety.
00:30and transport and other key matters, they can all be resolved. What the report has massively underestimated though is the economic and social value of such a precinct redevelopment and the opportunity with that of course with the Tasmanian Devils AFL team.
00:49My passion and my commitment to this project, the Tasmanian Devils and the aspirations of our young people has only strengthened my resolve as a result of the report today.
01:02Here we have an opportunity that people have been dreaming of and fighting for for over 40 years to have our own AFL and AFLW team, the Tasmanian Devils, who are already, already doing such a magnificent job with Auskick, participation up over 40%, young people, less screen time and more sport time.
01:26Well, everyone was saying that things couldn't be done, couldn't address noise, couldn't address safety, couldn't address transport, they can all be addressed.
01:33This is an opportunity that we cannot miss out on. This stadium is constructible and what the TPC have done, I thank them for their work, but they have massively underestimated the value economically and socially to this project.
01:51Given that Nathan Buckley this morning mentioned that he'd take the job today if the Devils offered him a head coaching role, how important is it to get the infrastructure on time and delivered in a timely manner so that the Devils can actually keep moving forward with their own field roles?
02:04Well, it's very important. It's very, very important. And can I say that every week delay is a further cost on the Tasmanian taxpayer.
02:18And so we need to get this done and get this done quickly. We have been talking about this as a state for four years, intensely, and it's time to get this done.
02:34And so the fact that we've got someone of Nathan Buckley's stature wanting to come to Tasmania and build a team is just a great example of already what is happening when it comes to the Tasmanian Devils.
02:55And can I say to that very good question, we will get this done and we will deliver this project and we will not let our young people down.
03:08And this is important that every single member of Parliament puts aside the politics of the day, which I know are intense and no one knows that more than me.
03:20But put aside the politics of the day and think about the opportunities of the future.
03:28And that's what we want our independent members of Parliament, in fact all members of Parliament, to consider.
