00:00i want to ask you how did you navigate a lord that fans are so jealous about and while you
00:07write a fresh and unique story that was the great challenge of both series of of this show because
00:17there's so much to drawn and people know many people know the the lore and the canonical
00:23history of star wars so well i mean we we do but i think that that's what was exciting about saying
00:31okay now let's mash it up let's change it let's decide what makes sense for this new rebuilt version
00:38of the star wars galaxy and once you released yourself from the lore you could kind of cherry
00:43pick the things that were exciting to you and characters that you wanted to spend more time with
00:48and and character dynamics that you had never seen before like for instance having the the four
00:55skywalkers padme anakin luke and leia together on screen as a family we i just it occurred to us
01:02well that's something that we couldn't see or probably will not see in another kind of star
01:07wars content but we can do it on our show and that's where things started to get exciting and
01:13that's where we started to say okay we can bring in darth revan we can bring in cal kestis we can
01:20bring in jackson from the marvel comics we can have even different kinds of legos like lego like brick
01:24heads and and you know giant chewy and and all the other things that we did and so i think it was
01:30always trying to put the story first to say what is the best way to tell the story using the component
01:38pieces of star wars and lego no pun intended well i guess slight pun intended but uh you know using
01:45those component pieces to tell the best story that we could there was a a joke or there was a or a twist
01:53in that character that you think that you wouldn't get away with it and you were surprised that it it was
02:00it was approved not really i mean trying to uh fortunately like everyone has kind of been on
02:10the same page in this process since the beginning it's like we were going into this we were nervous
02:15that there would be a lot of that of you know oh you can't do that with this character you can't do
02:21that with this character but like everyone at both lucasfilm and lego kind of got it from the very
02:27beginning of what we were trying to do here is like we're we're celebrating lego and star wars but
02:33we're also with both series of the show like really trying to recreate that feeling of play
02:42of of dumping that bin of star wars lego that you have and just mixing and matching and playing with
02:47the characters and and creating your own star wars story and because everything that we've written
02:53and all the the character changes and twists have all been true to that spirit of play like i think
02:59everyone has just been on board with it so you know we were prepared to like have to fight for things but
03:05there was no fighting i i was pleasantly surprised that we got to do the landalorian uh that that was a
03:11character that i i didn't necessarily know just because you know there's just a lot you know i didn't
03:17know if billy d would want to do it or if if lucasfilm would want to bring those characters
03:24in and and they they loved it and billy was incredible and so i would say that was one
03:29character that i we we were like oh i hope fingers crossed and then we got and then it happened so that
03:35that was really neat what was the difference uh working in a in a lego production or in the nature
03:42of a lego production and working in the previous productions that you have been well i think that
03:48in lego because it is so tactile and so visually dynamic and because you we as a society understand
03:57how lego most people i would say in the world know how legos fit together they they have personal
04:05experience with lego they know how they play with lego and so you kind of have to factor some of those
04:10things into the story and into the storytelling and the ways that that you're that you're expressing
04:16those things but but the other benefit is because it's all lego as we're even writing and having
04:22initial ideas we can build it with the lego that we had you know in the first series when when we had
04:31the idea to mash up tie fighters and x-wing like i took my tie fighter and my x-wing from the shelf and i
04:38started doing it myself um you know this brickhead asoka her mouth is messed up because because i was
04:45figuring out how to animate like how does it talk and and so even when we're coming up with the story
04:51like i'm sitting there with a bin of lego and our director chris was doing the same thing of just
04:57like piecing it together and you can actually touch it and play with it and manipulate it in a way
05:04that you can't with when you're telling a non lego story yeah what did you learn in this production
05:10uh especially in this second uh the second series that is pieces of the past that you can or do you
05:17you think that you can apply in next productions that you work on it's a great question no one's
05:22asked us that um i think that the lesson that that we learned is
05:28you have to push yourself creatively to continue to take risks and to not be afraid to deviate from
05:41what worked in the first season and find a big new idea like forcehold for instance which is
05:49quite different than anything that we did in the first series of the show but we said you know
05:55this is a big swing it's conceptual it's a little abstract in some ways but if we really go for it and
06:04if we really put our heads together both as writers and as an you know the animation team chris buckley
06:10our director we can actually do something that's unique that we haven't seen a million times before
06:18but i think that continuing to find big ideas that make a sequel worthy of being produced that's i
06:27think the thing that we're going to carry forward not being afraid to say great we love the first
06:32thing we did what's the new big idea here and how can we articulate that to the best of our ability
06:37that that's something i think we're going to definitely carry forward
06:39you
06:41you
06:42you
