00:00Britain's best amateur designers are undertaking the biggest job interview of their lives
00:16competing to become a fashion designer at Britain's most loved fashion retailer
00:22marks and spencer this week it's the semi-final and it's menswear I'm just doing a black t-shirt
00:32really I'm taking some big risks it's not over until it's over Richard as always our designers
00:40will be under the watchful eye of the marks and spencer experts what it takes to be a great
00:45designer M&S is to be really forward-thinking trying to push the boundaries within menswear
00:50and really focus on new shapes new fabrics new innovations
00:53and this week's guest expert Ian Wright it's just perfect simplicity of it's beautiful
01:02who's dressed their mannequin winging it like a bird that doesn't worry I don't want to go home
01:08five what falls remain all competing for the dream job to dress the nation
01:20hello welcome everyone welcome back designers congratulations you are officially our M&S dress
01:33the nation semi-finalists for the first time this series the design studio is officially a women's
01:42menswear free zone that's right it's menswear week look at the sigh of relief on david's face
01:48yes I've got here I finally made it my passion is menswear that's my forte so say there's a bit of
01:57pressure because this is what I is what I do so I have to like deliver so let's meet this week's expert
02:03panel from M&S menswear director Mitch Hughes hi Mitch nice to meet you hi I'm our marketing director for
02:10Marks and Spencer on the birth weight welcome Akana thank you now super excited to introduce this
02:16week's special guest he's a legend in the beautiful game since hanging of his boots he's become one of the
02:24nation's favorite pundits and when it comes to style he never misses anything right
02:30right now in honor of uncle righty this week's face design challenge is what you might call bespoke
02:50Ian hit us with a brief so designers for your statement piece we'd like you to design and make a
02:56a men's smart casual jacket for me oh wow yeah all right and it's a jacket that you're going to wear
03:05on live television I will be wearing it on live TV yeah so please make it good a lot of pressure
03:12what have they got to do to transfer their skills onto your body I tried to keep it very simple and
03:18very classy I'm not good with a tight I like to wear boxy stuff obviously on the TV now there's certain
03:24colors and certain things you can't wear simply because of the green screen I tried to make it
03:28as simple as possible but at the same time really something cool about it simple with a little twist
03:35mm-hmm that's what my wife says about me Mitch how should they approach this design challenge a jacket
03:43is a key piece of any man's wardrobe so try and put your own kind of personal twist on such a
03:48fundamental piece of a collection but just keep Ian in mind throughout your designs throughout kind
03:54of making this garment think of everything that you've been briefed on and just remember it's a
03:58semi-final so we are expecting good things anyone who's designed does not meet the judges expectations
04:05will leave the competition after this challenge now you've got five hours to create something mighty
04:14for variety oh I see what you've done there and your time starts now let's go good luck it's good that
04:24I know it's weird isn't it feels a bit lonely over here having pre-prepared some design ideas they
04:39now have five hours to create a jacket fit for Ian to wear on live television paying attention to his
04:45brief of making it cool but simple I can't believe I've made it to seven files if I'm being honest I
04:51honestly thought I could go home in week one this week is menswear never done it do you think they
04:58look nice together the other combination was better never ever made anything for a man never designed
05:04for a man okay yes exactly what I wanted big week menswear week not a bra with knickers inside it's a
05:20whole new ball game for our designers right Anna it is so the majority of our designers are menswear
05:27designers so they'll be in their element they've been waiting for this and that will be fantastic
05:31and actually be really interesting to see how Katie and Sandy cope because you know they've had a couple
05:36of weeks now where they've already been able to play into their strengths so they might be a little bit
05:42out of their depth time will tell won't it I'm going simple because I've never made a jacket before
05:48let alone a men's jacket growing up my granddad would always wear the same jacket and it always
05:53had loads of pockets on it and he always had his pockets full of stuff whether it was like pencils
05:57probably a compass he was so good at everything so I've kind of done it inspired by that although I've
06:03never sewn a pocket Katie design taking inspiration from her beloved granddad's old jacket will have
06:10no fewer than six pockets with the top half made from a contrasting material to the main body of the
06:17jacket I had traced my boyfriend's shirt before I came I literally raided his wardrobe so that is
06:25kind of forming the main bit but being so new to menswear design does Katie know enough to impress the
06:32experts Katie has had some brilliant weeks because she's been designing loads of women's wear her
06:37own admission is she's never made a menswear jacket what do you think of the fabric she's chosen the
06:42design I love them it's the kind of colors that you don't really see too much mixed like that then like
06:48the solid color with the check kind of thing I would wear those no doubt about it you can see the
06:54way she's handling the garment she's loving it so hopefully a lot come through in the design I
06:58genuinely am enjoying it I'm having fun I think trying new things for the first time and sewing is
07:03what I find really fun I'm going to be doing a lightweight zip-up jacket I'm certainly going to try
07:13and create something intriguing this is my thought process it feels quite facey quite techie I'm a bit
07:21of a gamer myself I think it is going to have that sense of futurism definitely bit of fantasy it's going to
07:27make the wearer feel maybe a bit like part of an advanced human civilization Dalen has chosen a
07:34chef on fabric with stretch panels it's a futuristic jacket drawing on his love of all things sci-fi but
07:41it might not be the simple design that Ian is looking to wear on live television we've got Dalen
07:47here I've never seen anything like the natural design of a garment like that he's like going for it in
07:52terms of the mix match so he's trying to elevate quite a simple fabric so is it too much in respect
07:57so the materials the colors there's a lot going on with it because it's something that I'm thinking I
08:02might wear on the box you don't want to be too busy on there as a member of the M&S team the winning
08:08designer across the series will have to work closely with various brand ambassadors who are chosen by the
08:13company to represent their products so Ian's presence is an important test to see how they
08:19collaborate and listen to his ideas hey hi Dalen last week the customers absolutely love your design
08:29you pretty much smashed it didn't you thank you I'm not gonna be modest about it I'm taking some big
08:36risks with what I'm making what risk do you think you're taking so I'm incorporating stretch panels
08:42into this chevron suiting because when I was looking at sports pundits I basically just saw a lot of
08:49really ill-fitting blazes see them sitting down or standing up bit of both all right bit of both yeah
08:55I'm totally obsessed with double zips now so when you sit down you keep the shape I mean I love that
09:01for you but unfortunately this jacket is not going to have that double-ended zip because my pattern is
09:06is a longer jacket it seems Dylan has missed an important part of the brief listening to Ian David
09:15meanwhile has taken on board Ian's requests to keep things simple I am feeling confident this is my
09:22week everyone's been rolling me up for this week oh men's wear week men's wear week you're a men's
09:28designer now it's here I have to deliver David's design mixes elements of smart tailoring with
09:35casual street wear combining a jersey fabric with a formal neckline to blend the two styles together
09:41and there is the added pressure of designing for one of his idols the closest team to me is Arsenal
09:48so I support Arsenal so watching him like growing up and stuff like that I've always wanted to meet my
09:52forwards for it's really cool it'd be awesome for him just to wear one of my pieces even if I don't win
09:57a challenge but he tries it on I'll be like you're wearing something that I made so yeah that'd be
10:01exciting David from week one he's been so out of his comfort zone and he looks like he's just literally
10:09flying this week I thought he was going to go a bit more elevated on his fabric because I think you
10:13compare the fabrics around the tables he's probably gone for the with the most kind of basic fabric so
10:19he's really got a ghost on the design the fact that it is a fleecy tracksuity material and to wear
10:24it on the TV it just feels too sporty it'll be interesting to see like what the finishes on yeah
10:31that's exactly right yeah because he's going for something quite simple he needs to absolutely like
10:35excel in terms of detail doesn't he hope that he can he can do it we are getting one step closer to the
10:41final and I uh I'm gonna be there you're gonna see me there with my boy band friends we're doing
10:50our step clicks and the rain from the rain down all right you know we've got a statement piece
11:00Jackie what's your vibe I'm at a stage in my life where I'm I feel good man I just want to wear what's
11:06comfortable it needs to be very simple you know it means simple obviously for TV colors have to be
11:11understated kind of cool simply because of like a little green screen understated cool this sheer
11:17mesh and it's gonna be for the top panel so I have done a lot of research into like the textures and
11:23the colors and the palettes and the trends there's trends of marble textures coming up in next season
11:29so as like as 2025 it's very fashion-forward it's the reason why I've picked up Paul's design is a
11:35classic bomber style jacket with a padded marble patterned insert at the top I'm confident in it
11:42it's slightly cropped but it's more boxy drop shoulder baggy or sleeve and I want to be innovative but
11:47not too crazy that I think I've had the nail on the head with a brief hi guys good morning how are you
11:55yeah I'm really good thank you I'm having a really good day today it's very fluid everything's very
12:00like smooth flowing what do you think of the material choices Mitch cotton it's cotton canvas yeah cotton
12:05canvas and then this will be kind of wadded will it yeah so this is this is five layers so I tried
12:09to go for like five yeah so there's back in warden back in interface and then shift there kind of
12:15cotton mesh yeah it's meant to be worn outside so there is an element of ever as cold and wet you
12:21like it does kind of keep you warm but also it's functional for inner studio as well you've got a
12:26lot going on in the garment yes can't wait to see it yeah I'm looking forward to see this one good luck
12:30um Paul probably say the most ambitious of the designs we're not quite sure where we're going
12:38on this one he's chosen a really quite vivid blue pattern a black elastic green and a green yeah a lot
12:47there's a lot going on it's hard he's got to push us and he's got to show us what he can do but I
12:51think the reality is if he's doing that fabric and that design and then Ian's walking in with the
12:56football pundits are we interested in an interesting debate you know we're looking at it from a
13:01point of wearing it and that would be very difficult especially with the pattern on the
13:06television so that's a worry what I've designed definitely says Ian right I've got a sneaky
13:12suspicion that Ian likes it Paul week in week out has designed things a little bit out there just
13:19wonder if it's like one step too far this week maybe
13:26just the nation brought to you by m&s
13:36just the nation brought to you by m&s
13:47welcome back to dress the nation where with one hour to go the designers are working
13:56flat out creating their bespoke jackets for Ian Wright I am sliding on all this fabric having
14:04come a close second in the statement peace challenge last week today Sandeep is hoping
14:09to better that and has her eyes firmly set on the end goal imagine working at m&s having that job would
14:16be incredible it'd be such a special thing to do I can't see myself forging that path any other way
14:23without going through this so yeah I just I want to do it I want to get there it would be great
14:31Sandeep has designed a jacket inspired by Ian's football career with two pockets on the front mimicking
14:37goals and lantern sleeves capturing the silhouette of a football hitting the back of the net
14:42so table here we've got Sandy doing quite an ambitious jacket by the looks of it what do you
14:50think of the design the color I love the color I like that look what's gonna happen with the pockets
14:54I think probably the sleeves would make me feel a little bit like the fabric she's got is quite a
15:01clean fabric so for me I think the big sleeve goes against the clean fabric so it'll be interesting how
15:06it comes out yeah hi Sandeep hey how you doing I'm all right how you getting on have you done menswear
15:14before I've made one jacket before my prince charming jacket so I made a men's jacket and I decided it
15:21would be my prince charming jacket so if one day I find someone and they put it on and it's the perfect
15:27fit then it's like a Cinderella moment yes we brought it with you I do let's have a look can I try it on
15:33of course you can all right okay let's see this could be the moment Sunday
15:45it's short in the sleeve so your ideal man's not six foot four okay I do like the idea you see it
15:53shows your creative side if it fits them and you like the way it fits them then it's miles better
15:59than a dirty that yeah be a lot easier how are you feeling about your sport um good it's not
16:08immaculate but I know I can tell babe brutal you've got ten minutes left so so so it's not gonna be pretty
16:20but it will be done I'm cutting the waistband out the jackets I've sewed it to the wrong side so the
16:29the sections on the outside when it's supposed to be on the inside all right how bad is that neck
16:33actually I think I might say oh it's a bit wide isn't it oh it's a bit wide time is ticking down the
16:40full-time whistle is almost upon us who's dressed their mannequin no one I don't want to go home
16:50putting on whatever these are called poppers I'm gonna do just one or two just to prove what I want
16:57to look like why is it so gapey terrible as well as three two times up step away your mannequins please
17:13designers it's a jacket it's done I just have to overcomplicate everything tonight what a twit if we
17:23were marked for tenacity then I would probably get 10 out of 10 you killed that that is I've
17:31definitely done my granddad proud of that jacket I think he'd wear it as well I like to think I
17:36could have done enough but you just never know overall I think I conveyed the concept of the
17:45jacket I knew it would be a bold ambitious jacket but I never came this far to play it safe I'm not
17:50sure that I've done enough to get through to the next round it's hard to tell with five jackets
17:56designed especially for Ian on their mannequins it's time to find out what the experts think
18:01whoever fails to impress them will be leaving the competition immediately we were a bit concerned
18:10about the sleeve actually it works really well I really like it I like the sleeves something to do
18:15with the goal and the ball kind of go which was created really quite nice and then I like the fit
18:19the actual shape is kind of really simple but these guys absolutely love it so you've hit the brief there
18:25you've done a really really good job this way well done thank you I like the shape of this jacket he's
18:33got a double zip so he's winning with me obviously the pattern and colors would be a problem for me on
18:38the TV I think you've designed slightly closer to your own personal interests and you have to the brief
18:44on this for me the colors and the patterns just clash a little bit it's just perfect how it is like
18:52that with that kind of neck probably wear it like that with a roll neck underneath I've been really
18:58impressed with actually how you brought together with this fabric because I have to say we were a
19:01bit concerned at the start of day because was it a bit too casual yeah but I think it's come out really
19:06well you know you have a clear brief and you stick to it every time and just producing an amazing
19:10garment well done thank you very much obviously for television I don't know what they'd say about
19:16the stripes when I sit down that would be quite it'd be quite long and that that wouldn't work for me
19:21I think the thing for me on this one is about trying to balance what is absolutely your style and
19:26a statement style and essentially what the needs are of Ian and I think there's probably just something
19:31that hasn't quite met in the middle on this one I think there's a lot going on different colors
19:36you've certainly put everything into it I just sadly don't think it's come across as well as as we'd
19:42hope sometimes less is more I suppose it's a jacket I'd wear it's very simple as much as you like to go
19:49onto the TV with like unbelievable stuff you need to be simple so as people can focus on what you're
19:54saying but at the same time see that you're wearing something that's pretty cool and I think that that's
19:58pretty cool I think it's fantastic for your first men's wear design and to come out like this it's
20:03it's really strong credit to you because you've done such a good job well done thank you all right
20:14designers now it's time to reveal the results our winner of the statement piece challenge designing a
20:24jacket for Ian Wright to wear on live television is David yes I'm happy could see myself in the jacket
20:45like that it was perfect in respect of how I can dress that up and now it can work on the box you must
20:50shift oh yeah 100% like I'm happy that you like it and I'm happy that everyone liked it and I yeah
20:56I'm just super happy that yeah well done I felt like I had to win it after this what how many weeks of
21:01doing different things that I don't know how to do and then it's my week for men's week so yeah I
21:05had to pull out the bag and I did so with David is the winner the rest of the designers have been
21:11ranked with the lowest place designer leaving the competition immediately in second place
21:17it's Katie congratulations the designer in third place is
21:26Sandeep
21:30so that means Paul Daylon one of you will be going home the designer in last place and leaving the
21:44competition is
21:53Dalen
21:56from the second you walked in you have just delivered your own unique style and it's so individual it is so
22:07clear that you have got absolute raw talent and it's horrible at this stage because nobody wants to go home
22:13but it just literally comes down to what was closest or not closest to the brief of what Ian needed so I am really really sorry this week but you have been
22:22so incredible thank you for having me
22:32I'm going home end of an era
22:34I would be lying if I said I wasn't surprised I think that my approach to design and my aesthetics
22:43actually just doesn't match M&S I think the thing that I've taken away as a designer is that I'm maybe a bit
22:49uncompromising and I think that was my downfall as well just not willing to budge on what I thought to be right I'll be walking out of here with my head held high
22:58feeling very proud and very satiated with my experience
23:03coming up on dress the nation
23:05with a place in the final look for grabs and I'm just doing a classic black t-shirt
23:10really the designers will have to go big
23:14Ben's web is always going to be hard I think this is the best thing I've made on this show
23:17yes Paul if they want to go through to the final the team with the must-have collection of the week and through to the final is
23:26Dress the nation brought to you by M&S
23:47Dress the nation brought to you by M&S
23:54Welcome back to dress the nation where our four remaining designers are just one collection challenge away from a place in the final
24:06but first winning designers David and Katie must decide who is joining their teams
24:11I've never worked with Sandeep before so I want to pick Sandeep
24:15come on up Sandeep
24:17thanks
24:18which leaves Paul with Katie come on Paul
24:20come on Paul
24:23it's time now to reveal your semi-final collection challenge
24:28we'd like you to create a full menswear outfit
24:31with an accessory
24:33you've obviously got the jacket now so it's all about what goes with it
24:37taking the aesthetics of the jacket and making sure your garments that go with it really elevate the outfit
24:42think about Ian think about his style and what do you think also that our customers would absolutely love
24:48it's not just Ian that you've got to impress you've got to impress the customers and the customer is always writing
24:56hey hey hey come on hey you love that one Ian yes my friend
25:01you can have a total of five hours to create a complete collection for this man and your time starts now
25:09right
25:10oh sorry
25:11with today's winning collection guaranteeing its team a place in the grand final
25:15it will need to not only impress the M&S experts and M&S customers but Ian Wright himself
25:21congratulations so far
25:23firstly what do you envision going with this what would you
25:26something like a workwear trouser
25:28you know what you could tape it at the bottom
25:30yeah
25:31probably a scarf
25:32a scarf
25:33a neckerchief
25:34nice
25:36okay
25:38Team Katie are making three items including a docker hat and t-shirt made by Katie
25:43and menswear designer Paul is making a workwear style trouser
25:48what accessories do you like using
25:52obviously a hat
25:53like a fisherman hat or
25:54yeah something like a docker
25:55okay yeah
25:56I probably would go with cord, baby cord or a workwear kind of vibe
26:03Team David is making a corduroy docker hat accompanied by a black roll neck top both made by David
26:09and aspiring womenswear designer Sandeep is bravely making her first ever pair of mens trousers
26:15I don't wear trousers
26:18I
26:19yeah I just I just don't I'm not familiar with them
26:23but here I am making some mens trousers
26:28having never made a pair of trousers before and with so many new unfamiliar elements to them
26:34she's going to need a lot of help from team leader David
26:38David David you got a minute I'm just trying to figure out how a fly looks
26:43I should have like worn jeans or something
26:45right the shield is going to go like here
26:48is it no
26:50no no this goes left over right so this this side is going to go over this side
26:54yes
26:55okay yeah
26:56all right
26:57okay
26:58yeah if I get just call me at every stage just come to that iron
27:02use that iron okay
27:03yeah all right perfect thank you
27:05good
27:06I mean if I did this regularly it probably wouldn't be such a challenge but
27:10er
27:11yeah it is it's it is a challenge but menswear was always going to be hard
27:16erm
27:17I'm not a man so I don't know I've never paid attention so close
27:21hi Sandy
27:24hello
27:25how are you
27:26I'm good thanks how are you
27:27really well thank you
27:28I like this material
27:29thank you
27:30that would look nice up against the grey
27:31yeah as soon as I saw it I was like perfect for trousers perfect for you and the M&S customer
27:37it's semi-finals you know this is like the final slog after today
27:41three of you will be going into a final so there's a lot to play for so just focus on these
27:46yes make them as great as you can just do what you've been doing all along because you've been
27:51brilliant and erm I'm sure these will be amazing as well
27:54I hope so
27:55okay we'll leave you to it
27:56thank you thank you Sandy
27:57see you later
28:00I'm so proud of my choices I've done what felt right for me I would love to be in the final
28:08erm it would be just amazing like that's what we're here for isn't it to just get all the way through
28:14it's just so close erm yeah I can feel like the sparkle returning to my eyes just talking about it
28:26I love how quick you're going Paul you're on it I love it
28:29yeah so quick
28:30no foot off the brake today I'm not talking to anyone
28:34over on team Katie menswear designer Paul has plenty to prove after coming second to last in the first challenge
28:41he hopes his tech on work wear trousers will prove to the experts he has what it takes
28:48was in fourth place on the last challenge he didn't deliver so he's under a lot of pressure today that if he doesn't absolutely blind quite an exceptional product that you love I think he's probably at risk here
29:00I've went with my gut and went with the lighter trouser
29:03they're a traditional work wear style trouser with standard yoke pockets and side zip concealed patch pockets
29:12if ever there was a time for my ADHD to kick in now is the time
29:16please ADHD gods make this work
29:19I am hoping that this gets me through to the final I'm just going to keep fighting
29:22to me this is like the redemption arc of a lifetime this would really really change my whole life and it would make everything valid that I've been fighting for for all these years
29:30where we come from you don't get to chase your dreams
29:32so for me to have the opportunity after years of fighting and trying to make the dream work it's life-changing
29:39Hi guys
29:42Hello Paul
29:43How you doing?
29:44I'm good
29:45You look busy busy
29:46Full steam ahead I'm making a Japanese style work wear trouser
29:51Yes
29:52So it's very minimalist but there's also a lot of detail which is still hyper me
29:56You're going for it
29:57How you feeling?
29:58I mean no one wants to come in like the bottom of the last if that makes sense because you feel like that roller blind is going to take you out next
30:04so you have to really really step it up which I think I am doing
30:07Look you're taking the right approach forget the last challenge just move on you've got a brilliant pairing with Katie
30:13I'm really positive about today and I'm going down I'm going down swinging
30:16Looking forward to seeing it Paul
30:17Thank you
30:18Cheers
30:20Where was I?
30:21He's gone for a classic Pacino colour which will always work and the people like that colour
30:25I like what he's trying to do
30:27He's gone for some cargo pockets which are invisible which I think is really cool
30:31If that cuts right then I'd wear that
30:33Brilliant
30:34Do you want to see what I've done?
30:36Yeah
30:37Yeah
30:38Choices are finished
30:39I've been flying
30:40Oh my god I love it
30:41Go Paul
30:42And whilst Paul is on the right path to redeeming himself
30:45Teammate and women's wear designer Katie is feeling less confident and playing things a little safer
30:52Men's wear is something I've never done
30:54Even though a t-shirt is like a very simple thing and a staple I've also never done a t-shirt
30:58So although you think it is simple and it is simple I know exactly how to construct it
31:03I honestly have no idea how today's going to go especially because there's so few of us you can't really hide amongst like you're very exposed
31:11Hi Katie you alright?
31:12So talk me through what's going on today then?
31:14I'm taking care of the top half of the outfit and Paul is taking care of the bottoms and so I'm just doing a classic black t-shirt
31:21Really? Okay and how are you going to innovate that t-shirt? How are you going to make it look a bit different?
31:25Yeah I am worried about presenting just a plain boring black t-shirt
31:29The difference between men's and women's is men's wear they like to have those little details
31:32Just like point of difference you know to make it just a plain garment to go to an elevated garment
31:36That is the thing I was worried about because it is just a black t-shirt
31:39It's already sold in M&S I'm sure in many different styles
31:43Yeah hopefully that's helped but listen good look I look forward to seeing you
31:46Okay
31:47Yeah thank you so much
31:48What am I doing?
31:55I need to elevate the t-shirt somehow I've got such little time
31:59Oh my god
32:02Turn down for what?
32:07Turn down for what?
32:09Turn down for what?
32:13Dress the nation brought to you by M&S
32:18The designers are over halfway through the menswear collection challenge
32:38With a place in the fine look for grabs Katie is worried her simple black t-shirt isn't going to wow either Ian Wright or the M&S customers
32:47So I am after speaking to Mitch I am going to try and elevate the t-shirt so I'm going to add a pocket
32:53I'm going to do it out of this fabric which is really lightweight and it mirrors the jacket and just hope the best
32:58Paul I'm literally doing that pocket on the t-shirt
33:01Yeah that's fine
33:02So it will be like that on the knees which I think is cool but I'm trying to get it to line up
33:06That's iconic yeah
33:07Yeah?
33:08So Katie obviously designed the jacket yesterday that you loved
33:11Yeah
33:12And she's trying to coordinate a black t-shirt to go under that
33:15Just a black t-shirt there's not much you can do
33:17The mens t-shirts a classic shape it's a classic garment but you've got to make sure it's spot on
33:22Someone very familiar with the details required for the challenge is menswear designer David who's finally in his element today
33:35I'm including red binding because inside the docker hat because Ian played for Arsenal so Arsenal are the reds you know
33:44Give it a nod to the team that he played for
33:46I'm wearing my number eight socks today as well
33:48That's his number when he played
33:50So I thought I'd wear them today
33:52In honour
33:53So we've got David over there
33:55What do you think of the designs what he's going for?
33:57I like it I like it
33:59It's such a nice grey jacket
34:01The black will really pop the grey out a bit more
34:03He just gets it just those little details
34:05Hopefully it'll be a nice surprise for you when you see it
34:07But I think he really gets it which you can tell
34:09He's really coming to his own in terms of menswear
34:12So here's the turtleneck
34:14And it's a good fit
34:16To elevate it a bit I put a number eight on the sleeve
34:19It's a small touch
34:20And then I put a number eight on the hat as well
34:23Which are Ian Wright's number that he played with
34:26So it'll be a part of the Ian Wright collection let's say
34:33What's he doing?
34:34He's putting Ian's on my
34:36Little detail
34:37That is amazing
34:40It's either Gerrards or yours
34:42I think for this one we could say
34:44Please say it's mine
34:45I think so
34:48So David is hitting the brief with regards to hitting small details
34:51And his teammate Sandeep also seems to have got the memo
34:55There is colour in the pockets
35:00And there's a peak of colour just there
35:02It's a nice little secret
35:04Designers fix up look shop
35:08You've got 30 minutes left
35:10Let's go Paul
35:13Final stretch
35:14I believe in you
35:15I'm not gonna lie I think this is the best thing I've made on this show
35:19Yes Paul
35:21Finished guy man
35:23I can go home
35:24Well done
35:25It looks so good
35:26They look great
35:28And then with the hat on
35:32And again like take my glasses off
35:34That's Ian Wright basically isn't it
35:37Yeah?
35:38Wicked
35:39I'm happy with that
35:40And whilst David's hat is almost complete
35:46Over on team Katie
35:48Things are not going quite so well
35:50Katie
35:51How are you getting on?
35:53Uh oh
35:54This is meant to be a hat
35:55I'm trying to see the vision
35:57Ian does like a
35:59A docker hat
36:00Do you know what you look cute in it
36:01I'm asking if you just turn it up there
36:02Aww
36:03It's good
36:04It's like a little window
36:05Do you want you on a little mat?
36:06Yeah I think it's winning
36:07Yeah is it winning though?
36:08We want it to rain
36:10But is this giving Lego heads?
36:12I can't see myself
36:13My hat's going to be way better than yours David is all I'll say
36:17I'd watch out if I was you
36:19Is it?
36:20Alright designers you've got 15 minutes
36:25Having completed his trousers already
36:27Paul is looking to cement his place in the final
36:29By adding an additional accessory to the collection
36:32In a bid to woe the experts
36:34I want to focus on the hat
36:36I want you to focus on the scar
36:38Because we just need an accessory
36:39I am making a neckerchief
36:41He wears a lot of scars on and off the pitch
36:43But they're usually quite decorative
36:45I think the purple and red are really strong
36:47Is the purple soft though?
36:49Yeah
36:50Show me just the purple
36:52Yeah purple
36:53I think Hugh will appreciate it
36:56I don't think the customer will appreciate a neck scar
36:58That's what I'm thinking
36:59How many minutes have we got left?
37:02You've got five minutes left designers
37:04Oh man
37:09I've got the real why is it really not?
37:14The back of the hat
37:17Yes
37:18Okay now I need to get my skates on
37:20David are you done?
37:22What do you need?
37:23What do you need?
37:24A drawstring cord
37:25Redded on one of my loop turners
37:27Okay
37:28What do you want me to do?
37:29Start getting the jacket on?
37:30Yes chef
37:31David are you ready to dress the mannequin?
37:33Yep
37:34Cool
37:38One minute left
37:39If it's not on the mannequin
37:40It won't get judged
37:43Yeah put the jacket on
37:44And then
37:45I'll come into
37:46The hat
37:47Last minute
37:50Will you tell me when there's one minute?
37:52We've just had one
37:53You've got 30 seconds
37:55Yes
37:56Can you go round the back?
37:57Just go round the back so you can see it
37:58I can feel it
37:59Ten
38:01Nine
38:02Eight
38:03Seven
38:05Six
38:06Five
38:07Four
38:08Three
38:10Two
38:11One
38:12Designers
38:13That is it
38:14It's full time
38:15Step away from your mannequins
38:18Well done
38:19Yeah?
38:20Well done it
38:21It's done
38:22Well done
38:23Well done
38:24Ooh
38:25I'm feeling tired
38:26I'm feeling lots of adrenaline
38:28But I'm feeling really happy
38:29Knowing like I gave it everything I could
38:31That actually looks good
38:32I'd wear that
38:33At this point there's nothing else that I can do
38:35To impress the judges
38:37I would really love to get through to the final
38:39I want to do this for me
38:40I want to do this for five-year-old Paul
38:42Who learned how to sew
38:43Well done
38:44Smashed it
38:47The designers have completed their menswear collections
38:50Which will hopefully impress Ian Wright and M&S
38:55It's time for the experts to take a look
38:57So this is David and Sandeep's outfit
39:00The trousers are very very good
39:02It's lovely and clean
39:03And the use of the denim with the jersey
39:06You know obviously it's going to be comfortable
39:07The simplicity of this too
39:09Yeah
39:10Will really elevate that iconic piece really
39:12And I say topped off with a hat
39:14With a little number eight on
39:15Yeah
39:16Cheeky little bit of detail which is a nice touch
39:18To see in this
39:19Yeah absolutely can
39:20Yeah
39:21And I think from a commercial point of view
39:22Obviously black and grey
39:23Actually really commercial colours
39:24They've stuck to the brief in terms of
39:26Yeah
39:27You know wearability
39:28You know for you but also for our
39:29Mainstream customers
39:32So this is Katie and Paul's
39:35What do you think of these trousers then?
39:37I love them
39:38They're brilliant
39:39Yeah I really do
39:40I like the tapered nature
39:41I like the width
39:42I love the invisible pocket at the side
39:44Yeah from a marketing perspective
39:46I think if a stylist was putting this together
39:48I don't think the trouser and the jacket
39:51Necessarily go perfectly together
39:53Katie has done what I think is a gorgeous hat
39:56Yeah
39:57T-shirt which clearly coordinates with the jacket
39:59What do you think?
40:00The pocket was something that I wouldn't want on
40:04Elephant in the room
40:05Yeah
40:06For me my eyes are drawn towards
40:08The neckerchief or the cravat
40:10What do you want to call it?
40:11I think probably a bit too much for our customers
40:13When I was talking to them earlier on
40:15I talked about a neckerchief
40:16Obviously I'm talking about a smaller one
40:18As soon as you come in
40:19You can't not see it
40:20And that colour is very in your face
40:26I've only got some men
40:28The experts opinions aren't the only ones that matter
40:31We've invited M&S customers to have their say
40:34On whether either of these collections
40:36Would have them running to the tills
40:38I think I'd buy the jeans
40:41And the top
40:42Yeah
40:43Maybe not the hat and the jacket
40:44But the jeans are really cool
40:45I love the pleats
40:46Yeah
40:47And like the smart button
40:48And it looks like the fit is really nice
40:50Yeah, that's so cool
40:51This is nice
40:52I think the collar is quite nice
40:54It's like a combination of
40:56Kind of, you know, relaxed clothes and smart clothes
40:59See?
41:00My tongue
41:01Just don't make it busy
41:02You know what?
41:03I think this goes good together
41:04But it looks a bit basic to me
41:06God, these are restless today
41:08Yeah
41:09I do like this collection
41:12The T-shirt, I like the fit of it
41:15I wish it was a heavier weight
41:17Scarf, I think, is an afterthought
41:18I think the pocket might be a bit too big
41:22Seems a bit out of proportion to me
41:24I'll give you that one
41:25The scarf is not quite right
41:28Like, it just feels a bit misplaced, I would say
41:33The trousers, I really like beige
41:35But the narrow cut at the bottom
41:38I'm not really, that's not really my style
41:40The actual trousers are amazing
41:41I mean, I love the drawstrings
41:43The trousers are same
41:44And that hidden pocket's really cool
41:47With the customers' feedback taken on board
41:50The experts now have the difficult task
41:52Of deciding who will go home
41:55And with the remaining three going to the final
41:57They need to consider the designer's progression as a whole
42:02Let's start with Katie, shall we?
42:05How has she performed in the collection
42:07And the statement piece jacket?
42:09I love her work ethic
42:10You can see she's really keen
42:11She's really passionate
42:12And definitely, you know
42:14I see a bright future for Katie
42:15She's had a couple of tricky weeks
42:17Garments that she's never made before
42:19She didn't really know what to do
42:20But she has literally give it 100%
42:22And that's what it's about
42:24But is there anything that does concern you
42:26About her?
42:27She very much
42:28The first couple of challenges
42:29Was almost designing for herself
42:31She produced beautiful designs
42:33Just can she put the M&S customer
42:35In the middle of every one of her designs
42:38And actually design for somebody that isn't her?
42:41Let's talk about David
42:42I think pretty much every week
42:43His design has either been the winner
42:46Or certainly in the top two or three
42:48One of the things that David does really well
42:51Is he puts the customer in the end use
42:54At the very heart
42:55Every single design
42:56And I think that for us
42:57Is like the sign of a really good designer
42:59Anna you have mentioned several times
43:02That you love the resilience of Sandeep
43:04Yes
43:05Could she be a good contender as a finalist for you?
43:08We nearly lost Sandeep in the first week
43:11Mmm
43:12If I reflect at how much I think she has grown
43:15Through this competition
43:17She's got a slightly safer style
43:19But she makes absolutely beautiful garments
43:22You're looking for someone to join your team
43:25And Paul as good as he is
43:28Seems to have missed the brief
43:29Quite a few times in challenges
43:31When I think across all of the different challenges
43:34His designs just seem a bit sporadic
43:38A bit crazy at times
43:39And I just worry how he will be able to translate M&S briefs
43:43Where you know our customers want very specific styles and qualities
43:48That said he seems to do better when he's in a team environment
43:53If you're in an office environment
43:55You're part of a team
43:56You have to work together
44:02With our designer's face decided
44:04It's time to find out which pair have got guaranteed places in the final
44:11So it's time to reveal which team has the winning collection
44:16And is through to the final
44:20I can tell you
44:22It was extremely close
44:26The team with the must have collection of the week
44:29Is
44:37David's team
44:39Congratulations David and Sandeep
44:41Not only have you secured a place in the final
44:43But you've got it
44:44Well done with the trousers
44:46Well done with the trousers
44:48I'm there
44:49I made it
44:50Through all the women's weeks
44:51I made it through all the stretchy fabrics
44:53And the kids wear
44:54It's good
44:55I'm happy
44:56I am a finalist
44:58I am a finalist
45:00I am a finalist
45:02I am a finalist
45:03I'm a finalist
45:04Well done David and Sandeep
45:06David and Sandeep
45:07Not only have you secured a place in the final
45:10But your jacket will be worn on TV by Ian Wright himself
45:15How do you feel?
45:16Yeah
45:20Speechless
45:21A rave of emotions
45:22Yeah
45:23So this means Katie
45:26Or Paul
45:27One of you will just miss out
45:29Just miss out
45:30On a place in the final
45:33And it's been an incredibly difficult decision to make
45:36This person has so much potential as a designer
45:40But unfortunately this week
45:42Their designs just haven't quite met the brief
45:46The designer leaving the competition is
45:48Paul
45:58Sorry Paul
46:02It's just my time
46:03It's just the way it is
46:04I'm so proud of myself
46:06This experience for me has been a rollercoaster
46:08It's had its ups, its downs, its twists, its turns
46:11You get excited to get on
46:12You're sad when you get off
46:14But ultimately it's not the end
46:15Like you can always keep fighting and keep going
46:17You've been amazing
46:19Thank you so much
46:20We all honestly miss your energy
46:21Thank you
46:22So, so much
46:23I've learned some great things off the people
46:24Made some friends for life
46:25And I can't wait to see them all again
46:28Next time on Dress the Nation
46:31It's the final
46:34I'm not going to get emotional
46:36I don't know what I'm making
46:38That's super ambitious
46:39Fabric can make or break a dress
46:41Come on
46:42I'm getting this done
46:43I'm going to blow everyone away
46:45Cutting corners
46:47Cutting corners
46:48The pressure is on
46:49Why do you want to work at M&S?
46:51Um, um
46:52What am I trying to say?
46:53How versatile are you?
46:55Um, me
46:56Sorry, let me try that again
46:58How do you think you navigate that?
47:00So, um
47:02And the catwalk
47:04Arraged
47:05I can't believe it
47:06Oh my god
47:07They're so glamorous
47:09Absolutely
47:10Superb
