At the United Nations General Assembly, French President Emmanuel Macron confronted U.S. President Donald Trump during a bilateral meeting, urging him to end the Gaza war if he hopes to win the Nobel Peace Prize. The discussion escalated over the recognition of Palestine, with Macron clarifying that acknowledging Palestinian statehood does not mean ignoring the October 2023 Hamas attacks. Tensions between the two leaders highlighted global scrutiny over the ongoing Gaza conflict and U.S. involvement, sparking debates on peace, diplomacy, and accountability on the world stage.

00:00We have a lot of things to do together, and especially fixing, I mean, these crazy wars we have.
00:04It's been a terrible war, it should have ended, and Russia should have stopped it.
00:09October 7th was one of the most savage days in the history of the world.
00:14There's never been anything like that.
00:15We're talking about babies being sliced in half.
00:18You're talking about young children having their heads chopped off.
00:22You can't forget that.
00:23If you want another price, you should put an end to the war in Gaza.
00:27What's your response to that?
00:28Well, they say that all together.
00:30I mean, it's Gaza, it's Russia, it's everything.
00:34I think Gaza's going to come along.
00:36The day after in Gaza to stabilize the land, and we need a political perspective,
00:41and this is why we took this decision on recognition.
00:44Well, thank you very much, everybody.
00:46It's a great honor to be with a friend of mine, Emmanuel Macron, president of France.
00:51He's doing a really good job.
00:53He's fighting hard.
00:54He's fighting on a lot of fronts.
00:55He's helping with regard to the Russia-Ukraine catastrophe, and his words of wisdom mean a lot.
01:03And we've been friends for a long time now, really, from the first term on.
01:08And I appreciate you being here.
01:11It's really nice.
01:13Please.
01:15Thank you, Mr. President.
01:16I'm very happy to have the opportunity to exchange with President Trump and our teams.
01:22And indeed, we have a lot of things to do together, and especially fixing, I mean, these crazy wars we have.
01:27And I just saw the message you issued after your meeting with President Zelensky, and I think this is a very right one.
01:37I mean, if we back, concretely, Ukraine in this situation, given the Russian economy is suffering,
01:48I mean, there is this opportunity of a good future.
01:52It is.
01:53So we will back it.
01:54I think so.
01:54I think so.
01:55They're very enthusiastic in a lot of ways.
01:57It's been a terrible war.
01:59It should have ended.
02:00And Russia should have stopped it.
02:03But they've been three and a half years, and they've gotten not so far.
02:07So we'll see what happens.
02:09But the other side can fight, too.
02:11And they've proven that.
02:12Maybe it's a paper.
02:12It could be that Russia is a paper tiger.
02:15I don't know what they are.
02:16But three and a half years of fighting and killing everybody, of killing 7,000 people a week for nothing.
02:24For nothing.
02:25So it's a very sad situation.
02:27But most of you have seen the recent statement I put out a little while ago.
02:32And I'm glad you got it.
02:33But I feel that way.
02:34I really do feel that way.
02:35Let them get their land back.
02:37Yep.
02:37So we'll see how it all works out.
02:39And in the meantime, I hear France is doing well, and you're doing well.
02:43And he's been my friend.
02:45And we've gotten along on just about every subject there is to get along with, other than on occasion wine.
02:52I say, wouldn't you like to pay a couple of dollars to put the wine into America?
02:57But we've never – we've always treated you good, right?
03:00We will try to fix all these issues.
03:02But we have very good discussions.
03:05And I think peace has an objective everywhere.
03:08Right.
03:08And Ukraine as the Middle East is a very – it's a common objective we have.
03:12So we will work hard on that.
03:13Emmanuel has actually helped me with a couple of the wars.
03:16We settled seven wars.
03:17The biggest disappointment, but I think that will happen eventually, is the Ukraine and Russia situation.
03:24But we've settled – I thought that was going to be the easiest one because of my relationship with Putin.
03:29But unfortunately, that relationship didn't mean anything, unfortunately.
03:33But when I needed some advice and when I needed some help in terms of a country in that part of the world, you were always there.
03:43And you helped me settle some of these seven wars.
03:45I'm very proud of the seven wars.
03:47But you helped me settle them, and I appreciate that.
03:50Thank you very much.
03:51Any questions for the President?
03:53President Trump – President Macron just said that if you want a Nobel Prize, you should put an end to the war in Gaza.
03:59What's your response to that?
04:00Well, they say that all together.
04:02I mean, it's Gaza.
04:03It's Russia.
04:05It's everything.
04:06I think Gaza is going to come along.
04:09We're going to have a very important meeting.
04:11And my next meeting, actually, is going to be very important with leaders in the region.
04:17And we're going to talk about Gaza.
04:19We're going to see if we can do something about it.
04:20We want to stop that.
04:21We want to get our hostages back or their hostages back.
04:24We've gotten all of the American hostages, as you know.
04:28And Alexander, all of them have been back.
04:31Steve Whitcoff has done a great job.
04:34And Marco always and everybody.
04:37I mean, we have – Scott got involved and strongly involved from a financial standpoint.
04:42We're doing some things that are pretty good.
04:46We put Iran out of commission.
04:48Very important.
04:49That was called the bully of the Middle East, and they're at a commission.
04:53Now we're going to have a meeting today.
04:54I think it's going to be a successful meeting with all of the leaders of many of the biggest – I would say the most important countries having to do with Gaza, indirectly and directly.
05:04And that's going to take place just in a little while.
05:06So I'm sure you'll be there, and we could have an outcome very quickly.
05:11What is your opinion of Palestine as a gift to Hamas?
05:16Well, I think it honors Hamas, and you can't do that because of October 7th.
05:21You just can't do that.
05:23But we want our hostages back, and we don't want them back in, you know, ones and twos and take the next two years to do it.
05:29We were the ones that got the hostages back.
05:32And I always said, I told Steve, I told Marco, I was always saying the last hostages are going to be the toughest ones.
05:39But you can't honor them by doing anything like you suggest.
05:44All you can do is say, we want our hostages back, and we want the war to end.
05:49We're going to want it to end.
05:50But you always have to remember, people forget October 7th was one of the most savage days in the history of the world.
05:58There's never been anything like that.
06:00We're talking about babies being sliced in half.
06:02You're talking about young children having their heads chopped off.
06:06You can't forget that.
06:08Would you recognize Palestine into hostages for back?
06:10And just perhaps to make it clear on that, I think it's why yesterday 11 countries did recognize Palestine.
06:18Not as, I mean, it was not a decision taken like that, neither by UK nor by Canada nor by France.
06:28It's just a big change.
06:30Nobody, President Trump is totally right.
06:34Nobody forgets the 7th of October.
06:37I went there a few days after, taking families in my hands.
06:42And we experienced all together these horrific attacks.
06:47And by the way, we lost a lot of French people in these terrorist attacks.
06:53But after almost two years of war, what is the result?
06:57Once again, they killed the top leaders of Hamas.
07:01It works.
07:02This is a great achievement.
07:04But at the same time, you have as many Hamas fighters as you had the first day.
07:09So it doesn't work to dismantle the Hamas.
07:12This is not the right way to proceed.
07:15So we need a full-fledged process.
07:17And we work very hard on the day after.
07:20And I totally share this sequencing.
07:22The release of all our stages, the ceasefire, the resume of humanitarian aid.
07:26The day after in Gaza to stabilize the land.
07:29And we need a political perspective.
07:31And this is why we took this decision on recognition.
07:36Well, I have to say that I'm on the side of Israel.
07:40I've been on the side of Israel, really, my whole life.
07:42And we are going to get a solution.
07:46And it's going to be a solution, hopefully, that's good for everybody.
07:49But it's time to stop.
07:50We're going to have that very important meeting.
07:53I think the meeting we have coming up in the next hour is going to be one of the most important meetings that we'll have here.
08:02And we've had some important meetings.
08:03We've had some great meetings.
08:05And I understand where you are and where other people are, too.
08:10And we just have to get this solved.
08:13We have to get the hostages back.
08:14We want to get the war over.
08:16That's very important.
08:17We're going to end the war, get the hostages back.
08:20And we want them all back.
08:21We don't want to have one, and then we'll give another two in about three months from now.
08:25We've been doing that for a long time.
08:27And in all fairness, we've gotten a lot of hostages back.
08:30But you have 20 hostages, and you have probably 38 bodies, dead bodies.
08:34And the people that I see, and I speak to Israeli families.
08:39I was speaking to American families before, but we got them back.
08:42But I speak to Israeli families, and they want the son who died.
08:47They want their dead son back as much as though he were alive.
08:50And it's an amazing thing to see.
08:53And it's a horrible thing, actually, to witness.
08:55But I've seen it a lot.
08:57So they have 20 hostages.
08:58They have 38 dead bodies.
09:00And we have to have them back.
09:02And we have to have them back immediately.
09:04Thank you very much, everybody.
