00:00A new study commissioned by Marks & Spencer and youth mental health charity Young Minds
00:08revealed a significant disconnect between young people's mental health needs and parents'
00:13confidence in addressing them.
00:16According to the research, 38% of young people say they feel most comfortable turning to
00:22a parent or carer when struggling with their mental health.
00:26But at the same time, 35% of parents worry they might make things worse by starting the
00:32conversation.
00:34And nearly a third say they've avoided discussing mental health altogether because they're unsure
00:39of what to say.
00:40There are things at the NSPTC that we're worried about when we think about children's safety
00:44online.
00:45We hear from Calls to Childline that children are being groomed at scale online with perpetrators
00:50often creating fake profiles to build relationships and contacts with children online and then
00:56using this to groom and exploit children.
00:59We also know that children are exposed to a really wide range of harmful content online,
01:03whether that's age-inappropriate material, violent content or sorts of material that will impact
01:09their mental health.
01:10With one in four young people aged 16 to 24 now experiencing a common mental health condition,
01:16the findings point to an urgent need for more open and supportive communication at home.
01:23More than half of parents surveyed admit they feel judged when their child is struggling,
01:29and 45% say they would welcome a guide to help them approach these difficult conversations.
01:35Young Minds is working to close this gap through free confidential helplines and online tools designed
01:42to help parents and carers feel better prepared to support the young people in their lives.
01:48The research also highlights the importance of peer support, with 78% of young people identifying
01:55friends as a key source of help.
01:57Lisa Zuranyika, Director of Community, Culture and Services at Young Minds, said this research
02:05highlights how daunting some parents can find talking to their child about mental health.
02:10It isn't easy.
02:12She added that many young people are struggling with their mental health, and the reasons can
02:17find the complex.
02:18Not knowing what to say or fearing making things worse are understandable concerns, especially
02:23if parents feel ill-equipped to navigate these challenging conversations.
