Battersea power station new tube station entrance - interviews with Seb Dance, the deputy mayor for transport, and TfL commissioner Andy Lord
Transcript
00:00Battersea Power Station, so good they named it twice.
00:03Not only did they name it twice, they opened a second entrance.
00:07Let's go and take a look, see what it's like.
00:13So the brand new set of escalators are just behind me there.
00:16It's sort of leading in and out of the station. It gives you a choice as soon as you come through
00:20the ticket barriers. You can either go left or right depending on where you want to go
00:24in the wider Battersea Power Station development.
00:27Amazing achievement, just four years since we opened the line and now we'll give direct access
00:32into the main retail and commercial area of the power station development and of course
00:37even greater accessibility for the station with a new lift and two escalators.
00:42Now Battersea Power Station, like Nine Elms, another new station just further down the line,
00:47is on the Northern Line extension which opened four years ago. Now TfL is very happy with the
00:53passenger numbers. In the last year there were around 10 million journeys through Battersea
00:58Power Station station.
00:59Is it great to see Battersea Power Station, Steve?
01:02Well yeah, it's Battersea Power Station, a bit like London Bridge makes the London London Bridge
01:09somewhat superfluous. I think Battersea Power Station will suffice, but I do like saying
01:13Battersea Power Station station.
01:14Now what this also demonstrates is the cost of modernising the tube. This development cost 21
01:21million pounds and TfL couldn't afford all that by itself. The Battersea Power Station developers
01:26chipped in, as did Wandsworth Council, as did City Hall and that's really the way forward for TfL.
01:33It's got plans to modernise more than a dozen tube stations in terms of providing more step free access,
01:38but it needs developers to come on board and work with it and essentially help to split the belly.
01:43When I was a young whippersnapper it was completely derelict and for many years after I ceased being
01:48a young whippersnapper it was derelict. So it's fabulous to see new life breathed into it. It's a
01:53destination not just, not just as I said for Wandsworth, but for London as well. People come
01:57internationally now to Battersea Power Station. It's a new centre of the city and it's all been possible
02:02because of this transport extension.
