00:0075-year-old Freddy Rivero was targeted in a particularly nasty and unprovoked attack in
00:12Islington on the 27th of February. A group of teenagers got off a bus and surrounded him.
00:19The youths, who at the time were 14, 16 and 17, pushed, shoved, kicked and punched him,
00:27with one of them filming the incident on her phone. Along with CCTV, mobile phone footage was also
00:37paid to the court, which showed one of the girls pulling his glasses off his face, then one punching
00:45him and him falling backwards. The prosecution said the oldest girl threw the fatal punch.
00:54Mr. Rivero died from his injuries a day later.
00:59Freddy Rivero was 75 years old at the time of his death. His daughter read a very moving victim
01:05personal statement during the sentence hearing today. She told the court that her father had
01:11many serious health problems, but he seldom spoke about his illnesses and pain. Instead,
01:17he retained his kind, polite, gentle and friendly manner. He was a loving and supportive father,
01:23a loyal friend who was wise but humble, and a central part of her life. He had friends from
01:30many walks of life, including his former work life and in the local community. Those who knew him and
01:37cared about him have expressed their sadness and shock at his violent death. It is clear from everything
01:44I have heard that Freddy Rivero was a thoroughly decent person who was very much loved. He is
01:50greatly missed by his family and friends, and I am conscious that no sentence imposed today could
01:55compensate them for their loss. The needless death of an elderly family man is heartbreaking for the
02:01family and understandably will have provoked feelings of outrage within the community. Sadly,
02:07there is no sentence that could overcome those feelings. I have focused on your welfare and future
02:14rehabilitation. It is not only in your interests, but in the interests of wider society, that you
02:20should in the future be capable of leading useful and law-abiding lives. The information before the court
02:27gives hope that this is possible.
