In this video from the 2025 Real Simple Idea House, designers show how they use a moodboard to guide their rendering process. From choosing color palettes and materials to visualizing textures and light, see how a well-crafted moodboard helps bring design concepts to life before a single piece is built.

00:00When your expectation meets reality. I started with the walls. I wanted a moody, chic, sophisticated
00:06color, but I also knew I wanted texture, hence Venetian plaster. Next, the furniture. Always
00:11start with the bed. I wanted to lean into natural materials with the walnut bed, and I also wanted
00:16to keep it simple and modern. And then the rug. You need something soft under your feet when you're
00:21walking, and it also adorbs sound. Next, we went with this globe-like fixture that has three
00:27different points of light, and it also brings the eye up. After the light fixture, two bedside
00:33tables. I don't like matching furniture. So one is in travertine, and one is like a burl wood.
00:39We're going to do a sconce on one side, and a table lamp on the other. So you have multiple
00:44sources of light, but they're all at different heights. I like to use drapes because they just
00:49soften up the space, and this is where we'll repeat the color of the rug. Here, I wanted to pop a color,
00:54and to really play with what I like to call, it's like your grandma's quilt, but you make
00:58it modern. To bring it home, the picture above the bed. Now, it is tiny. I love like a little
01:05peekaboo window moment, and the colors really just pull everything together. And again, I
01:09like playing with asymmetry. And in the corner, a little greenery will go a long way just to
01:15add life to the space. I wanted the space to feel moody, serene, sophisticated, and chic,
01:20to appeal to multiple people, and not just one particular type of person.
