The mid-Atlantic is cleaning up today after a coastal storm hammered the region with gusty onshore winds, rain, rough surf and repeated high-tide flooding, swamping low-lying neighborhoods and chewing away at already eroded beaches.
Transcript
00:00Now some of the worst flooding here in the city of Norfolk came at the peak of high tide late Sunday afternoon over both of my shoulders flooded out cars. Now officials warn that the tidal flooding would be major in this part of Norfolk and there's at least 12 cars that are actually flooded out in this immediate neighborhood. The concern for the folks in the next 24 hours or so will be these high tide cycles which will continue to bring in some flooding conditions across this region.
00:30But it's also those persistent onshore winds that have been brutal in this part of the Delmarva and into Virginia Beach that caught most people off guard. Very similar to hurricanes that have come into the Gulf Coast as far as the intensity of the wind and what it does to the surf. But it's just pretty been pretty incredible watching the surf today and the waves very very high. I'm glad I'm not out there in the boats. It's rough.
00:59It's rough. Yeah, it's a rough day. It's beautiful though. It is. We're loving it.
01:06Now several thousand people were without power in the last 24 hours from these storms and this persistent onshore wind. Conditions will steadily improve in this region, of course, in the next day or so as the system pulls away from the region.
01:22But there is still the concern that during these high peak times there could be some coastal overwash and some coastal flooding. So folks are reminded to stay extra cautious over the next 24 to 48 hours. Reporting in Norfolk, Virginia, I'm Leslie Hudson for AccuWeather.
