04:54On the 19th of February 2015, I attended Crown Hill St George Bristol with my girlfriend Shawna Hoare
05:01In my car I had a large bag, a stun device, handcuffs, tape and mask
05:10I had developed an idea to scare Rebecca by kidnapping her.
05:20A few minutes after arriving, Shauna said she wanted a cigarette and went into the garden.
05:27I went to the boot of my car, I took out a bag, went upstairs to the landing before knocking on Rebecca's door.
05:34She replied, what, or hello, and I said, can I see you a minute?
05:44I cannot be sure which order things happened, but I used the items I had to subdue Rebecca.
05:52During the short struggle, my mask slipped and Rebecca was able to see my face.
05:59This caused me to panic and I strangled her.
06:02While she was partially in the bag.
06:11The significant thing is he admits that he's responsible for her death.
06:18So it was certain now that we were looking at a serious crime.
06:25We re-arrested Nathan and Shauna on suspicion of murder, and they continued to be held in custody.
06:38Now we had some conquering information that Becky was dead.
06:43We needed to find her.
06:44So he was asked what he was able to tell us about where she was, or where she might be.
06:58He revealed that she had been moved from Cotton Mill Lane to an address at Barton Court.
07:05So we got a warrant to enter and search the premises.
07:11We came through the front, through the house, and then into the back garden.
07:27And there was a shed just here.
07:31Nathan Matthews, they said he asked a couple of friends if they could do him a favour and store some stuff in their garden shed.
07:38He told them that it was a consignment of cannabis.
07:49I arranged for a forensic team to attend the scene, and they started looking at the shed.
08:00It was full. Very full.
08:03Items, property, suitcases, bags, just stuff.
08:12I gave the instruction that the bag that was closest to us should be opened in situ,
08:22so as we could ascertain what was in there.
08:24That bag was carefully opened.
08:30And inside was a wrapper.
08:35But you could see what it was.
08:39It contained a body part.
08:41We found a head, a torso, arms and legs.
08:53Each of the body parts was wrapped extensively with cling film,
09:01masking any potential smell.
09:03Nathan Matthews had killed her.
09:14Taken her home.
09:16Put her in a bathtub.
09:19And gone on this huge shopping spree for a body disposal kit.
09:24I found the fact that he queried the price of this all so shocking.
09:38Not only are you going to buy something to dismember your stepsister,
09:43but then you don't even want to pay full price.
09:47It's not any comprehension in his head of almost the enormity of what he has done,
09:56what he is doing.
10:04It's horrific that he'd even kill her.
10:07But the fact that he dismembered her,
10:12beggar's belief, really.
10:17As you enter Cotton Mill Lane,
10:21you had Nathan and Shauna's house on the left.
10:24And two houses down,
10:26on the opposite side of the road,
10:28was where Luke was living with his mum and his dad.
10:31So Becky's boyfriend is living within eyesight
10:35of the place where she was dismembered.
10:41Crawl beyond belief.
10:47We arranged for a coffin to be brought
10:57so things could be removed from the scene
11:03with respect and dignity.
11:05In your home address,
11:17with your family,
11:19that's where you should be able to be safe.
11:25And all that trust was breached.
11:28Back at the home where they last saw Becky alive,
11:40a heartbroken family came to pay their respect.
11:50Later, Becky's boyfriend did the same.
11:52After investing so much hope in finding her,
11:56they have been left devastated.
12:01It was such a shock.
12:04I'd been there from the beginning with them.
12:07And I don't believe you can cover a story like that well
12:10without getting some way involved.
12:14I was sat on a bed rocking violently backwards and forwards,
12:21screaming.
12:22I wanted to kill him.
12:26I was just devastated.
12:32And you just went into shock.
12:35You could see it.
12:37I just couldn't accept it.
12:42I would have described him as.
12:44A loving son.
12:47He's never lied to me.
12:50He's always been open and honest with me.
12:53You know, I loved him like he was my own son.
13:06I saw how hard it was for Angie,
13:08her son having destroyed this life
13:11of the man she'd married and loved
13:13and a child that she'd also helped to bring up
13:16and loved herself.
13:18Darren had a lot of pressure from his side of the family,
13:21saying, you know, distance yourself from Angie.
13:23It's her son.
13:25And he was absolutely adamant.
13:28This is my wife.
13:29I love her and we're staying together.
13:31And I just remember being so struck
13:34by how strong they were as a couple.
13:36I don't know if I could do that, to be honest.
13:42I'd hope I could, but the idea of blame
13:45when you come of loss of life,
13:46and especially in such a horrific way,
13:49you know, the blame is the first place you go to.
13:52How they stuck together
13:54is a real testament to both of them.
13:59We was a little family unit, weren't we?
14:01Yeah.
14:02We'd be a little dysfunctional
14:03because we're all from, you know,
14:06different parents and partners
14:08and that sort of thing.
14:09But, no, we all linked together.
14:11We were quite a strong little unit.
14:14Which is why it was such a devastating shock
14:16that he'd done this.
14:17The school were doing an exam
14:31and a teacher said,
14:37we found Becky's body
14:40and then he said parts.
14:47I don't know why he said it like that.
14:51And then I just shut down really
14:54and the whole room went just silent.
15:00And everyone just started looking at me
15:02and then I just walked out.
15:10I didn't cry.
15:11I think I was numb, but I was angry.
15:13I was just feeling all these emotions
15:14and I didn't know how to deal with it.
15:17I found out my best friend's dead.
15:24And I just remember sitting there
15:26with my mum, just crying.
15:28Just, I felt very guilty
15:30in the sense that
15:32in my head I thought,
15:33if only that morning I'd gone round the house
15:35and just said,
15:37did you want to hang out?
15:38That might have stopped that hole from happening.
15:41But how can you do that
15:46to a member of your family?
15:48I couldn't do that to a stranger,
15:50let alone somebody I grew up with.
15:52Nathan's admitted to killing Becky.
16:05But what was really absent
16:07from that was why.
16:10Where's your motive?
16:11Why has this happened?
16:12Why has this 16-year-old girl lost her life?
16:22Nathan, can you give us your full name?
16:24Nathan Charles Matthews.
16:25So, Nathan, we've had a short break.
16:31Perhaps if I just flag up for the recording
16:34what this interview's about.
16:35It's about the kidnap and murder of Becky Watts.
16:39Rather than simply take at face value
16:41the written statement
16:42that you have given to us last night,
16:45then we need to explore
16:46what you've told us some more.
16:48I don't know what questions need to ask, but...
16:53How about if we start with
16:58this idea you had about scaring Becky?
17:04Well, obviously I came up with the idea to scare her
17:06cos, like, she'd leave things out
17:10on the floor of my mum to trip over her
17:13and obviously would talk to her.
17:15like, she'd say, nasty comments
17:20and talk to her, like, dirt on the floor.
17:25Complete lies.
17:28Becky always took care of Angie.
17:33Angie has multiple sclerosis,
17:37so Becky would always look out for her
17:39and help her whenever she needed it.
17:42So tell me what you thought you were going to do.
17:45what your plan was.
17:49Obviously stick her in the suitcase.
17:53Obviously put tape around her mouth
17:54so she wouldn't make any noise.
17:57The plan was, obviously, once I got her in the car,
18:00I was thinking of, like,
18:02a wooded area, you know, say,
18:05somewhere along the lines of, you know,
18:06you've got to start treating people better
18:08and then, like, make a threat of, you know,
18:12or this could happen again or worse,
18:14or something like that.
18:19Obviously I thought if I was, you know,
18:21able to scare her,
18:23and obviously her not be harmed,
18:27and obviously be released.
18:29Obviously when she got back,
18:31she obviously would have been scared
18:36and more appreciative of things
18:38as people are.
18:39He said he wanted to scare her,
18:46so he came into the room
18:48wearing a mask,
18:49and he said the mask slipped,
18:51so he panicked and strangled her.
18:55But he had tasers.
18:57You don't bring tasers,
19:01which are illegal in this country,
19:03to scare a 16-year-old girl
19:06when you yourself were, like, 28.
19:09It doesn't make any sense.
19:10She was really, like, slender.
19:13He would have been able to overpower her.
19:15He didn't need any of that.
19:16So it just didn't add up at all
19:18what he was claiming happened.
19:21Was Becky stood up, Nathan,
19:23whilst you were strangling her?
19:24No comment.
19:27To what degree was she incapacitated then?
19:33No comment.
19:37Was she conscious at the time
19:39that you strangled her?
19:43No comment.
19:49Most people that get strangled
19:51get strangled with a ligature.
19:53The fact that he killed her
19:55with his own bare hands
19:56is rare.
19:57He will have seen her dying
19:58in front of his eyes.
20:00It was very personal.
20:05It appeared that Nathan went there
20:07with the intention of killing Becky
20:08and that his version of events,
20:10that it was an accident,
20:11just wasn't plausible.
20:12We have to investigate this whole offence
20:22and, of course,
20:23whilst you're being interviewed,
20:24Shauna is also being...
20:25I know Shauna's being interviewed.
20:27I want to talk about Shauna.
20:28So you don't want to?
20:30Okay.
20:31We had Shauna,
20:37who is Nathan's girlfriend,
20:40in custody.
20:43I think people were wondering,
20:45well, where does Shauna Hall come into this?
20:48Has she just been arrested
20:49because she's the girlfriend?
20:51We know that she was at Becky's house
20:56when Nathan killed her.
20:59So it was important to establish
21:01whether or not she played a role
21:03in Becky's death.
21:04Just so I'm clear,
21:06as far as the kidnap's concerned,
21:07you are not aware
21:09that Nathan was planning to do that
21:11on that day, okay?
21:12I couldn't even look at him
21:16to think that he'd be like that,
21:19even if he had those thoughts,
21:21let alone to actually carry them out,
21:24to know that at any moment
21:26I could walk down and think
21:27I'm carrying his children.
21:30I didn't...
21:33to think that I would know.
21:40Sorry.
21:42Take a minute.
21:45That's right.
21:49Becky was so excited
21:51when she found out
21:52that Shauna was pregnant again.
21:54She was like,
21:54I'm going to be an aunt again.
21:55And I remember
21:56Nathan said to her at one point,
21:59you're never going to be an aunt
22:00to my child
22:01or something like that.
22:02But Shauna was always
22:03really nice to Becky.
22:06Because I suppose the thing is,
22:08from someone outside looking in,
22:10is that what he's saying,
22:11is he's gone to the address
22:13with an intent to kidnap her.
22:15Okay.
22:16And it's been quite convenient
22:17that you're at the garden
22:19having a cigarette
22:20and he's doing what he's doing.
22:22Yes.
22:23Do you see what I mean?
22:23Yes.
22:25My mum said to him,
22:25I've had a really bad night.
22:28Can I have a fag?
22:29Can I get to Angie's?
22:29He said yes.
22:30And then he saw an opportunity
22:31for me who was planning it
22:34for months.
22:35I don't...
22:36I don't know.
22:37At their home address,
22:50there were phones,
22:52laptops found in drawers,
22:54found in cupboards,
22:56found in the attic.
22:58And we would start going
23:00through these devices
23:00with a real microscope.
23:07First thing we noticed
23:10was patterns in
23:11Nathan's browsing of pornography
23:13that was much more geared
23:15towards teenagers.
23:19There's a predisposition
23:20to sort of doing harm
23:22to teenage girls here.
23:23I remembered Nathan
23:27would make really morbid jokes
23:30about hitting Becky
23:31with a sledgehammer.
23:34And at the time,
23:35you don't think much of it.
23:37You just think
23:37that's a dark sense of humour.
23:40But Becky would also tell me
23:42that he had anger issues.
23:45She told me that
23:46at one point when she was younger,
23:48he inappropriately touched her.
23:52And she had told me
23:53before that he threatened
23:55to kill her.
23:59But she just thought
24:00it's not a serious threat.
24:09When we're looking
24:09at all of the content
24:10on devices,
24:11we're getting a much clearer sense
24:14of Nathan and Shauna's relationship.
24:16We're seeing these messages
24:25where if Shauna bought
24:26a packet of cigarettes,
24:28he would then have them.
24:29And if she wanted one of them,
24:31she would have to ask
24:32and he'd charge her a tenner.
24:37So it was definitely
24:38a weird power dynamic
24:41playing out.
24:42Sheuna was estranged
24:45from her mum and stepdad
24:47because her mum said
24:49that she didn't like
24:50the relationship with Nathan.
24:53Nathan commented a lot
24:55on her weights,
24:56sort of would control food,
24:58would control her money.
24:59and he was quite paranoid
25:01about losing her.
25:04Element of almost like
25:07the victim being controlled
25:09within the relationship.
25:10But then
25:23he came across
25:25another message
25:26between Nathan and Shauna.
25:27So the first message
25:37is 9th of 12th, 2014,
25:40timed at 12.48.
25:43We've got Nathan to Shauna.
25:46Bring me back
25:47two pretty schoolgirls then.
25:49Shauna replies,
25:50yeah,
25:51I will just kidnap them
25:52from school.
25:53Yeah.
25:57Tell me about
25:59that text message.
26:00No comment.
26:06They're talking
26:07about kidnapping
26:09a teenage girl.
26:13Almost in a
26:14light-hearted
26:15context,
26:17like it's a casual
26:18conversation.
26:18next message
26:23is 9th of December,
26:242014,
26:25at 1814.
26:27It says from Shauna.
26:29Just went to
26:30Cost Cutters
26:31and saw a very
26:32in big caps
26:32pretty petite girl.
26:37Almost knocked her out
26:38to bring her home.
26:39L-O-L
26:40and there's
26:41crosses and zeros.
26:44Shauna,
26:45what can you tell me
26:45about that?
26:46No comment.
26:47Am I right
26:48in thinking
26:49that this girl
26:49was similar
26:49to Rebecca's age?
26:50No comment.
27:02Nathan's obvious
27:03fantasy around
27:04schoolgirls
27:05was really
27:05abundantly clear
27:06from these messages
27:07but what really
27:09stuck out as well
27:09was Shauna's
27:10knowledge of that
27:11and going with it
27:11and the fact
27:13that she even
27:13suggests
27:14bringing back
27:15a schoolgirl.
27:17and I think
27:19that was one
27:19of the key messages.
27:23This is something
27:23they've talked
27:24about before
27:25and now they've
27:25acted on it.
27:26Our inquiry suggested
27:44that having killed
27:46Becky
27:46they took her back
27:47to their house
27:48at Cotton Mill Lane.
27:49they put her in the bath
27:54and then it would
27:59appear that they
27:59ordered a takeaway
28:00almost as if
28:02nothing had happened.
28:03on the day that Becky
28:10went missing
28:11they've got web browsing
28:13history
28:13and we found
28:17a parody
28:18of the Disney
28:19Frozen song.
28:21Will you help me
28:22hide a body
28:23but it doesn't have to be
28:25in one thing?
28:30Having taken Becky
28:31back to the house
28:32put her in the bath
28:34ordered their takeaway
28:35they're there
28:37and sat there
28:37eating it
28:38watching clips
28:41on the internet
28:42of concealing bodies
28:43you get the distinct
28:46impression
28:47that Shauna
28:48was directly involved
28:48in it.
28:49And how do we know
28:51you weren't involved
28:51in the killing
28:52of Becky?
28:53There would be no proof.
28:57I haven't
28:58touched anything
29:00or been anywhere
29:02near her
29:03alive or
29:04dead.
29:09We knew that
29:10Shauna was present
29:11in the house
29:12when Becky
29:13was killed
29:14we know
29:15that she was present
29:16when Becky
29:17was removed
29:17from the house
29:18and taken back
29:20to Cotton Mill Lane
29:21we know
29:22that she was sat
29:23watching videos
29:24about concealment
29:25of bodies
29:26but most of that
29:28at the moment
29:28is circumstantial
29:29evidence
29:30so we needed
29:32to build
29:32a case
29:33with more
29:34direct evidence
29:35against her
29:36rather than
29:38a mere presence.
29:42back at the shed
29:53within the bags
29:56and suitcases
29:57were found
30:00some face masks
30:01and they were sent
30:03to our forensic
30:05service provider
30:06where they were
30:07examined for DNA
30:09on one of the face masks
30:14we found
30:15DNA that attributed
30:17to Nathan
30:19and on one of the other
30:25face masks
30:26we found
30:30Shawna's DNA
30:33the fact that
30:38her DNA
30:39was on a face mask
30:40which was found
30:41with the body parts
30:43gave every indication
30:45that
30:45Shawna
30:46helped Nathan
30:48we had sufficient evidence
30:55to charge both of them
30:56with murder
30:57she always put herself
31:13across being very timid
31:14even loved her
31:16like a daughter
31:17didn't I
31:17in the end
31:18she was
31:23always polite
31:24and nice
31:24like just
31:27a normal person
31:28you wouldn't think
31:30that somebody
31:31that seemed that way
31:32would be capable
31:33of this
31:34I just remember
31:55this quiet
31:56and just hearing
32:04the horse's hooves
32:05coming down
32:06the street
32:06the streets
32:13were packed
32:13with people
32:14throwing flowers
32:14it was nice
32:16that all the community
32:18came together
32:19and they were so supportive
32:22and so kind
32:23it affected a lot of people
32:28because they can see something
32:30of themselves
32:30or their children
32:31or their friends
32:32in Becky
32:33and just her innocence
32:35of vulnerability
32:35it was lots of tears
32:40I mean everyone was crying
32:41I don't mind saying I was crying too
32:44it was everyone was into tears
32:46I saw a little cough in there
32:55it was just a shock
33:03it started to really hit you then
33:06the burial
33:19they had this song on
33:21when she was being
33:22like lowered into the ground
33:23and the song got cut off
33:26I was like
33:29she must have hated that one
33:30I was like
33:33she thinks that song's rubbish
33:34put another one on
33:35what had been taken away from me
33:43was like
33:43my best friend
33:45someone that I had plans with
33:48for the future
33:48we used to make jokes
33:50saying that we'll get one of those
33:51two person mobility scooters
33:53when we're older
33:54and it's like
33:55I don't know how to explain it
33:58but it feels like a part of me
33:59was taken away
34:00like you lose your sense of navigation
34:02when somebody
34:04that life was so intertwined with yours
34:06is no longer there
34:07Nathan and Sean needed to go to prison
34:14they needed to
34:15pay for what they've done
34:18the world was looking
34:27at Bristol Crown Court
34:29photographers
34:31crews
34:32reporters
34:33journalists
34:34from every news outlet
34:35was there
34:36we knew that Nathan Matthews
34:47had killed her
34:48he admitted that
34:50but what the prosecution were trying to show was this was a murderer
34:52someone who went out with a clear plan
34:57to go to Becky
34:59and kill her
35:00however
35:04Sean O'Hall said
35:06not guilty to everything
35:08the defence very much
35:10wanted you to believe
35:12that she was
35:13a completely innocent bystander
35:16when Nathan Matthews
35:26stood on the witness stand
35:27it was just
35:30so hard
35:32to imagine
35:34how Angie must have been feeling
35:36her son
35:39is stood there
35:40talking about killing
35:41her stepdaughter
35:42and the dad of that daughter
35:45is there
35:46he's your husband
35:47occasionally I'd glance over
35:53to see
35:53like
35:54do you even have any remorse
35:56or guilt
35:56about what you've done
35:58but he'd never looked up
35:59at any point
36:00he just kept saying
36:03I didn't mean to kill her
36:04getting very emotional
36:06crying a lot
36:07and he was adamant
36:09that Shauna didn't know anything
36:10she didn't see anything
36:12she knew nothing
36:12it was all him
36:13Shauna kept to that story
36:17saying
36:18I had no idea
36:20this was going on
36:21I didn't see anything
36:22I have no part in this
36:24but then
36:26why is her DNA
36:27in that face mask
36:28the defence very much
36:35painted a picture of Shauna
36:37as a very vulnerable
36:39young woman
36:40we were told
36:43that Shauna
36:44had been fostered
36:45as a child
36:46she was 14
36:48when she
36:49met Nathan Matthews
36:51he was 21
36:52so there was a
36:55seven year
36:55age gap
36:56was there this element
36:59of coercive control
37:01we got to the end
37:13of the case
37:13and the jury
37:15gets sent out
37:16we knew
37:22Nathan Matthews
37:23had killed Becky
37:24but the argument
37:26of the case
37:27was
37:27was it murder
37:29after three and a half
37:35hours
37:35the jury
37:37came back
37:37everyone just
37:40suddenly runs back
37:41into court
37:43to hear what the jury
37:44had to say
37:45and Nathan Matthews
37:51was fined
37:52guilty of murder
37:55the jury
38:01the fact it came back
38:03within just a few hours
38:04that showed
38:06how much they believed
38:07that this was a clear plan
38:09he had gone to Becky's house
38:14with a kill kit
38:15with stun guns
38:18handcuffs
38:19a mask
38:20a suitcase
38:20and then afterwards
38:25a shopping spree
38:26to buy all of these things
38:29to get rid of her body
38:30and Shawna Hall
38:36was found
38:37guilty of manslaughter
38:39the jury just didn't believe
38:43her story
38:44when she said
38:48I was having a cigarette
38:49while Nathan was killing Becky
38:51I didn't see the body
38:53come down the stairs
38:54I didn't see it in the car
38:56I didn't hear
38:56him using a circular saw
38:58to dismember her
38:59in our own
39:01small little house
39:02it was laughable
39:04no one believed that
39:07I've done a lot
39:14of court cases
39:16and I've never known a judge
39:18to break down
39:19his voice just broke
39:22and you could just tell
39:24the emotion had got to him
39:25it just showed it
39:28affected everyone
39:29neither Matthews nor Hall
39:33has expressed any remorse
39:35for Becky's death
39:36the hard work
39:37and meticulous attention
39:38of the prosecution team
39:40has ensured that they've been
39:42brought to justice
39:42for their crimes
39:44I've got to really love this family
40:08I spent the day with them
40:11and they took me up
40:13into her bedroom
40:13that was quite
40:14a special moment
40:15I've put her bedroom
40:17back together now
40:17so it's all how it was
40:19wasn't always as tidy as this
40:20I can assure you
40:22but yeah
40:23this is how she
40:24likes it
40:25he wanted to make sure
40:28that their daughter
40:29was remembered
40:30in the right way
40:31it seems so quiet
40:32when I were here now
40:33you're really quiet
40:34you've got to start
40:36like Becky
40:37you're just used to noise
40:38and then when it's not there
40:40you really notice it
40:43I want a drink ready
40:44no it's fine
40:46I'm taking half of this
40:48I just miss her
40:51I wish she was still here
40:54I miss everything
40:56even the arguments
40:5710 o'clock every night
41:01I expect that door to come
41:03door to come through
41:04and say
41:04cook for some tea that
41:06but it never does
41:08it's ridiculous
41:11and yet we still
41:13listen out for it
41:24he made her a bench
41:29me and Courtney
41:31been there together
41:31a couple of times
41:32I usually go to
41:37Becky's grave as well
41:38every time that
41:44I have a milestone
41:45in my life
41:46such as
41:47getting my driver's
41:48license
41:48or going on holiday
41:50it always makes me think
41:52that she never got to
41:53do these things
41:54so it's quite bittersweet
41:56every milestone for me
41:58is something that she
42:00should be doing too
42:01and she's not
42:02this is 10 years on
42:06and they are
42:08turning to adults now
42:10you know
42:10and this is something
42:13that will never leave them
42:14it's part of their life
42:15forever
42:15as it is part of my life
42:17every time I look back
42:23at secondary school
42:24I always think of
42:25Becky there
42:26and Courtney there
42:27I just think about
42:31how she was as a person
42:32and all the good times
42:35that we had together
42:36she was an amazing person
42:40anyone would have been
42:43lucky to have Becky
42:44as a friend
42:44as a friend
43:14who has stayed
43:15for her
43:15and they're
43:16close to her
43:18high school
43:19but that was
43:19exactly what
43:21of course
43:22who has revealed
43:23that is
43:23due to her
43:24and I just
43:25went back
43:26and taken
43:27her
43:28and said
43:29yes
43:29and said
43:30just
43:32she
43:33went back
43:34and accessory
43:36and why
43:37did that
43:37well
43:40going back
