00:00In the second test at Chennai in February 1993, the crowd witnessed a classic Kapil Dev masterclass,
00:06a display of fearless batting and raw power that reminded everyone why he was one of India's
00:13greatest all-rounders. Under the warm Chennai sun, Kapil Dev decided to take on England's
00:19fiery pace caller Devon Malcolm, and what followed was pure entertainment for every cricket lovers.
00:30Now at 442 for five. Malcolm, pace returns to the pavilion end. Malcolm taking over from Tufnel.
00:37Give you Tufnel's figures in a moment. Malcolm to...
00:43Oh, I say Kapil Dev hits that one many a mile. That's five over mid-off for six. What an astonishing
00:50stroke. Malcolm ran in, in fact, wasn't the fastest ball he'd ever bowled, but he's never received such
00:56murderous treatment as that, I dare say. And that's Kapil Dev's way of saying good afternoon,
01:04Devon Malcolm. What an incredible shot. It was a good length delivery and he just picked it up,
01:10laid it on the rise. And this is what makes it difficult for most bowlers to bowl to Kapil Dev.
01:16Not that time. I must say, I don't think I've seen such an exciting stroke for a long time. I can
01:27remember Ian Botham hitting Craig McDermott straight for a six at Edgbaston with that same sort of easy
01:36lunge into the ball. I'd like to think this boundary is a little bit longer than the one at Edgbaston,
01:42the straight boundary. It certainly is a long longer over here. If I remember about that match,
01:49England were chasing a score.
01:57Well, there's no doubt in Kapil's intentions. That's going to be four more. Is it all? Yes,
02:02it's gone over the boundary. Salisbury couldn't get there.
02:05India. So, India really treading on the accelerator now. And if we're going to have,
02:13well, an hour or so of Kapil Dev in this form, my goodness me, we're going to be in for some excitement.
02:19Well, it makes it look so easy. Just guiding it away. Bad bounce there for Salisbury. It's not the best
02:28of outfields to field on, particularly near the boundary.
02:39It's in the air, but it's four runs. My goodness me. Again, Kapil Dev opening his shoulders,
02:46and what a marvellous, no-nonsense blow. Henry, are you hungry? Isn't that lovely? I had a very
02:53good lunch, actually. But wasn't that another fine blow, Sonny? Oh, a tremendous shot there. The
02:58mid-on is up. And that means you're inviting Kapil to play the shot over the top. And particularly
03:05when India is looking for runs, Kapil Dev needs no second invitation.
03:14Take that. Well, Kapil couldn't get across to that. I suppose a quicker fielder might have done.
03:21And it's the end of the over. 4.76 for five. Well, Mike Gatting has appeared after tea. He's in the field. He,
03:31of course, fielded for the first session of the match yesterday, then retired to bed with the tummy
03:38troubles. And, uh, he said this morning when Charles Colville interviewed him, uh, before the start,
03:45that, you know, he felt all right lying in bed. But when you get here and run about the sun,
03:49it's not so good. And he said he was going to have treatment in the first part of the day and
03:53spend it resting. Well, that's obviously done the trick because there he is. I think his beard's
03:57grown a bit lighter, don't you?
03:59Kapil Dev just taking that away. A couple of runs. Does he have to hurry up the far end of that throw? Hit the
04:13stumps from Atherton. I think it would have found Amre short of his ground. I think he ran that second
04:19run a trifle casually. Yes, he did. And it was very thoughtful cricket by Michael Atherton on the boundary.
04:26Uh, Kapil Dev thought the throw would come to his end, so he was running fast. And Amre was just casually
04:31sauntering along. Michael Atherton. Look at that. Terrific throw. Oh dear, if he'd have collected it.
04:40Dear, oh dear. He didn't even have to hit the stumps. He just collected it.
04:43Well, that's gone away. Four runs to square leg. So Kapil Dev is now 33, which is two runs short of
04:575,000 in test cricket to add to a small matter of 414 wickets. Well, he just made a terrible mistake with
05:05the run out of Ian Salisbury. Then another easy lollipop full toss. That's just an experience
05:13from Ian Salisbury. We've got to keep pressure on batsmen at this level. You can't afford too many
05:18easy balls, too many mistakes.
05:2246 runs these two have put on and Kapil Dev has scored all but 12 of them. And he now needs just the
05:28single to become the first man to score 5,000 runs in test cricket in addition to taking more than 400
05:34wickets. Tuffnell is the bowler and the saucepan lids are poised. We're going to have the father and
05:45mother of clanging when this 5,000th run comes.
05:49And there it is, a Scamford single and Kapil Dev has now scored 5,000 runs in test cricket. The crowd
06:03are well aware of the importance of that single standing and cheering him, waving flags, the usual
06:10razzmatazz from these splendidly histrionic crowds.
06:21Well, there's the 50. It's been swept away for four runs. Kapil Dev goes to 53. The crowd stands,
06:30cheers, usual Indian celebrations. And goodness me, there have been many of them in this match.
06:38Sidhu 106, 165 for Pendulca, now 50 to Kapil Dev. What more of the Indians got to chair about in
06:49the next few days? Well, in due time we will know. Oh, look at that, a marvellous shot, using his feet,
06:57hitting it so hard.
06:58And when he hits the ball like that, one feels there's no one in the game who hits it much harder.
07:07550 for six.
07:10Well, I think that lady was wearing the earrings of the day on the first day of this match, but
07:15those are simply magnificent. Certainly, I mean, we won't see better earrings on the entire tour.
07:21How lovely. Haha, she knows we're on her. But they really are marvellous.
07:37Well, oh, they're going to get, no, they're not going to get an overthrow. 560 for six.
07:49Well, I think that's what I'm going to do.
07:56Kapil Dev started his assault with the majestic straight six of Devon Malcolm.
08:00The kind of shot that makes spectators rise to their feet. It was not just a hit, it was a statement.
08:07The ball soared effortlessly over the baller's head, leaving even Devon Malcolm stunned.
08:13After that, Kapil Dev whipped a delightful boundary off his leg, sending the ball racing past square
08:18leg. His timing was pure, and his intent was fearless. But Kapil Dev was not done yet. He
08:24continued to dominate Malcolm, cracking another four past mid-on and soon followed it up with
08:30yet another boundary off the same baller. It was vintage Kapil Dev, full of aggression,
08:35elegance, and authority. His bat spoke louder than the words that afternoon. The carnage did not stop
08:42with the Pacers when Ian Salisbury offered a tempting full toss. Kapil Dev dispatched it for
08:47a boundary with ease. Then came Phil Tufnel, and Kapil Dev danced down the pitch to drive him
08:53peerlessly to the fence. One shot straight as an arrow, another thumbed over deep mid-wicket.
09:00Each stroke echoed with the sound of confidence and class. By the time Kapil Dev innings ended,
09:06he had scored a dazzling 66 runs from 75 balls, laced with eight fours and a magnificent six.
09:14But beyond the run, this knock carried historical significance. During his inning, Kapil Dev became
09:19the first cricketer ever to achieve the incredible double, scoring 5,000 test runs and claiming more
09:26than 400 test pickets. As he reached the milestone, the Chennai crowd erupted in joy, waving flags and
09:33chanting his name. It was more than a celebration, it was a salute to a legend who had redefined Indian
09:40cricket with his courage and charisma. That day Kapil Dev did not just play an innings,
09:46he created a memory that still shines brightly in the golden pages of cricket history.
