00:00:00Well, Castillo Corrales is up next. WBC lightweight champ, Jose Luis Castillo, who's as hot as he's ever been in his three most recent bouts.
00:00:09Castillo has beaten top shelf competition in Juan Lascano, Joel Cosmajor, and Julio Diaz.
00:00:14Five years ago, Castillo first won a share of the lightweight title, but his momentum was slowed by a pair of close losses to Floyd Mayweather Jr.
00:00:22Now, he's reestablished some steam, and he faces Corrales, another fighter who's managed to rebound from a momentum-busting loss to Mayweather.
00:00:32Tonight's main event, an intriguing battle.
00:00:35Diego Corrales in his dressing room, and if he seems relaxed, well, that's the norm for this guy.
00:00:40Corrales is only 27, but he's already been in a number of high-profile showdowns,
00:00:45including the fights against the likes of Floyd Mayweather Jr., Joel Cosmajor, Ocelino Freitas.
00:00:52Tonight, a major crossroads for the former junior lightweight and current lightweight champion and his trainer there.
00:00:59On the right of your screen, trainer of 14 months, Joe Goosen.
00:01:04Al Burstein, with more on their partnership.
00:01:06Well, thank you, Steve.
00:01:07You know, the role of a trainer in a boxer's career has been analyzed and often debated.
00:01:12That role and the relationship that comes with it are textured a little differently in each case.
00:01:17Now, for Diego Corrales and his trainer, Joe Goosen, their story is part of a bigger mosaic.
00:01:30It seems wherever there's a press conference, weigh-in, or title fight in the junior lightweight or lightweight divisions,
00:01:36you'll find the presence of trainer Joe Goosen.
00:01:39You had Casamayor, who fought Freitas.
00:01:42You've had Corrales, who fought Casamayor.
00:01:45You went against Freitas with Corrales.
00:01:48You're kind of this central character in a soap opera.
00:01:51Yeah, it's a little bit more nerve-wracking than a soap opera,
00:01:54when you're dealing with this type of talent that you're facing and working with.
00:01:59Goosen's current partner in this lightweight drama is the unassuming Diego Chico Corrales,
00:02:04a curious complement to the colorful Goosen.
00:02:06And he is Hollywood.
00:02:09You know, he has the hair, the clothes, his whole demeanor is stopped.
00:02:16That is Joe.
00:02:17And if they don't look at anything other than me fighting,
00:02:19and it's been all the time concentrated on Joe, hey, it doesn't bother me at all.
00:02:23This soap opera began with Goosen in the corner of undefeated Joel Casamayor,
00:02:30losing a bitter decision to Asselino Freitas.
00:02:33Surprisingly, Goosen and Casamayor reemerged as a force in the division
00:02:37when they stopped a courageous Corrales on cuts.
00:02:41Give me one round!
00:02:41The drama then took an ironic turn as Casamayor abruptly severed his seemingly happy relationship with Goosen.
00:02:51It caught me completely off guard.
00:02:53We had spent many years here winning world titles, training and winning fights, developing his skills,
00:02:59and they made the move, and they live with their decision.
00:03:05The plot twists continued as Goosen switched corners,
00:03:09joining Corrales in his rematch against arch-rival Casamayor.
00:03:13He really pressed Joel with a jab most of the night and kept him on the end of his punches.
00:03:19Under Goosen's tutelage, Corrales exacted his revenge against the trainer's former fighter.
00:03:24You talked about the mixed emotions, and afterwards you did embrace Joel Casamayor.
00:03:30What was going through your mind during that period?
00:03:33What was going through? That's kind of hard to think back to it.
00:03:36I was a little sad for him, to tell you the truth.
00:03:39I think that was really my overall emotion.
00:03:42I was sad for him because, you know, he had to lose that fight.
00:03:48When Corrales faced Asselino Freitas, the story came full circle.
00:03:51But Chico not only captured the WVO lightweight title, he avenged his trainer's loss.
00:03:57He was like, you know, here's the big one that got away.
00:04:00It was something I really wanted. It was a fight I really wanted, but it was that one for him.
00:04:08To fight the good guys, that upper body's got to be in constant motion.
00:04:12You don't want to be a sitting target.
00:04:14Despite their perfect 2-0 record in world championship fights,
00:04:18the gregarious trainer and his soft-spoken fighter definitely agree on one thing.
00:04:23There's always room for improvement.
00:04:26If you could change something about Joe Goosin, what would you change?
00:04:29I would dress him differently.
00:04:30I am challenged clothes-wise, yes. I'm stuck in the 70s.
00:04:36Now, we've known Joe Goosin a long time, and you know what? Chico's right.
00:04:43He probably is, but Joe made the point.
00:04:45However, I can still fit into those clothes I had in the 70s, so that's a point for him.
00:04:49Do you think the extended layoff will be a factor for Corrales?
00:04:53We know this 9-month layoff is a long one. There's no mistaking that.
00:04:56However, the last time he had a long layoff, it was a 2-year layoff when he was incarcerated for spousal abuse.
00:05:03And when he came back off that layoff, though, he fought a series of tune-up fights.
00:05:07This time he's going right into the lion's den in a very difficult match.
00:05:11However, he said that he was very sharp right at the beginning of camp.
00:05:14Joe Goosin confirmed that. We'll see if they're correct in that.
00:05:18This thing is so close to call. Is there a perceived favorite in the main event?
00:05:22Well, there is an actual favorite, at least in terms of the betting.
00:05:26A 6-5 favorite is Corrales.
00:05:28But that may be simply because Corrales is a little better known here,
00:05:33where the betting would take place in Las Vegas, and people understand him a little better.
00:05:37I think this fight is absolutely about as even as you could get.
00:05:41It is so even, in fact, that experts are very divided about who the winner will be.
00:05:46But most boxing pundits do agree on one thing,
00:05:49that for Corrales, good strategy and technique are just a bit more important.
00:05:59Corrales can't afford to languish on the inside,
00:06:01where Castillo can find a hundred ways to hurt him.
00:06:04The Corrales jab must be used often and with a lot of conviction.
00:06:08Now, to win, Corrales has to hit the charge in Castillo with multiple counterpunches.
00:06:12Castillo should come in behind the jab, not lunge in head first.
00:06:20And the left hook is a powerful punch that Corrales can be hit with.
00:06:25The inside is the place where Castillo not only can punch,
00:06:27but muscle Corrales and sometimes a little bit more.
00:06:30And here is Jose Luis Castillo, someday hopes to be mayor of his hometown,
00:06:40Empame, in Sonora, Mexico.
00:06:42Whether it's the boxing ring or the political ring,
00:06:44Diego Corrales may turn out to be his toughest opponent.
00:06:48He comes in with his idol, his hero, Mexican legend,
00:06:53Julio Cesar Chavez is there in that entourage.
00:06:56He's a realist. He knows he'll never reach the rock star stature of Julio Cesar Chavez.
00:07:03But he thinks he could be up there with guys like Barrera and Morales, people of that ilk.
00:07:09It's been a frantic schedule, but the wait's finally over for the always tenacious Castillo.
00:07:14Now, all that's left is for Castillo to win.
00:07:17And despite the brevity between fights, he is supremely confident.
00:07:21We talked about the longer layoff, obviously, of Corrales,
00:07:24but he's fought, Castillo's fought four times in the last year.
00:07:28And two months, not a long time in between, Steve,
00:07:31when you come into one of the most important fights of your life
00:07:33because you want at least a six-week training period.
00:07:35So, will that short period hurt Castillo?
00:07:38Yeah, there's a lot of doubt because of that.
00:07:40The square-jawed Castillo, never down in 59 pro fights, 15 years of action.
00:07:45But he's never gone up against the power of Diego Corrales.
00:07:48Castillo says he welcomes Corrales.
00:07:51He is extremely bold, feels he's got the beard to stand up to Chico's heavy fists,
00:07:57even invites a toe-to-toe throng.
00:08:02Off two hard-fought fights, one quite recently, as we have been pointing out,
00:08:06could that be a disadvantage, particularly with a fighter like Caliber?
00:08:10There's Julio Cesar Chavez, along with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.,
00:08:15in the crowd, giving Castillo a big thumbs-up.
00:08:19And there's a real affection between these two men.
00:08:21Castillo doesn't feel he lives in his shadow.
00:08:24He says, I'm just happy to be associated with Chavez.
00:08:28And, of course, Chavez's former chief sparring partner,
00:08:31which gave him a lot of confidence to get to this level.
00:08:35Diego Chico Corrales, very personable outside the ring,
00:08:49transforms himself into one of the fiercest fighters going today,
00:08:53looking very focused.
00:08:55We saw what he did versus Freitas, made the proud Brazilian quit.
00:08:58He was the first guy to really hurt Casamayor.
00:09:01His power can simply change a fight.
00:09:03He said he'd walk through hell to beat Castillo.
00:09:07That may truly have to happen against a relentless, busy-punching Mexican.
00:09:14We've got two guys who personify toughness, power, and courage.
00:09:19Let me get up here in front of you.
00:09:33Al Corrales and Castillo are just as excited about this fight as the media and the fans.
00:09:56They really are.
00:09:57You know, Corrales had an interesting moment with Castillo on Wednesday when they had an open workout.
00:10:01He said, you know what, he hugged him and he said, you know what, we're going to make some history.
00:10:06And they know that's a fight fans fight.
00:10:08He's working for the history of the sport.
00:10:11That's what drives him, says Corrales.
00:10:13He is mentally and physically prepared for the hardest fight of his career.
00:10:17And he's working his crowd, looking at all four corners of this ring and getting them to respond.
00:10:21Well, these guys want to fight the best to show who is the best in the lightweight division.
00:10:26That's why we are here tonight.
00:10:29Diego Corrales is ready.

00:10:46Let's size them up as we check out the tale of the tape.
00:10:51Corrales has the youth.
00:10:54Castillo has always been thought of as a big lightweight.
00:10:57That would make Corrales the Yao Ming of the division.
00:11:00Chico with the slight edge and reach at yesterday's weigh-in.
00:11:03Castillo, Corrales both right on.
00:11:05Tonight, Castillo 146, Corrales a plus-12 at 147.
00:11:11And a look at the notable rules for this unification fight.

00:15:26Ladies and gentlemen,

00:15:46Once again, a referee in charge,
00:15:49Tony Weeks now to give instructions.
00:15:51On the same day as the Kentucky Derby,
00:16:07we'll see two of boxing's top thoroughbreds,
00:16:22hoping to power their way to glory.
00:16:24Until now, Castillo could only think about or talk about
00:16:27Corrales' crushing power.
00:16:29Tonight, he expects to find out exactly how it feels
00:16:32and how he'll react if Chico connects.
00:16:34The power of Corrales has been his godsend,
00:16:37but against the smothering attack of Castillo,
00:16:40the answer may be the jab.
00:16:42Chico not used to fighters actually coming at him of late
00:16:44with Freitas and Cosmajor,
00:16:47his last two opponents.
00:16:48Very different story tonight.
00:16:50Here we go.
00:16:51And maybe one thing that people should remember
00:16:54right from the get-go,
00:16:55Diego Corrales came up from junior lightweight
00:16:57to ultimately beat Freitas for the title.
00:16:59Castillo is a big, strong, lightweight
00:17:01who has been at this weight class
00:17:03for essentially his whole career.
00:17:05Castillo never dropped or KO'd.
00:17:08He's been stopped four times on cuts.
00:17:11However, he is historically a slow starter,
00:17:14particularly his last couple of fights.
00:17:17But he said if Corrales comes at him,
00:17:19it'll be a brawl, a grueling slugfest.
00:17:22Interesting to see what Pat Corrales takes here
00:17:24at the outset.
00:17:25And already we're seeing Corrales
00:17:27happy to stay on the inside with Castillo.
00:17:29We'll see how this plays out.
00:17:30He's trading hooks with Castillo.
00:17:32He's staying right in there with him.
00:17:34Some would say that's a mistake.
00:17:35We'll see.
00:17:36He is looking, Corrales,
00:17:38to force a shootout with Castillo.
00:17:41Looking to establish an early presence
00:17:43just as he said he would,
00:17:45knowing Castillo is a slow starter
00:17:47and get stronger as the fight goes on.
00:17:49No, I can't do that.
00:17:50No, I can't do that.
00:17:50No, I can't do that.
00:17:52No, I can't do that.
00:17:54Already 20 weeks for the warning to Castillo.
00:17:58Castillo is a rough customer on the inside.
00:18:00He'll lose his head, elbows, etc.
00:18:02Some call him dirty.
00:18:06A lot of body work by Corrales early, Steve.
00:18:09That's interesting.
00:18:11And there it is.
00:18:13Meanwhile, Castillo coming right back.
00:18:14He said to beat Corrales,
00:18:16he'll have to stay close,
00:18:17throw a lot of punches,
00:18:18pressure him.
00:18:19Don't let Chico think.
00:18:20This is going to be a great fight.
00:18:22I can tell you right now,
00:18:23Corrales is making it have to be a great fight.
00:18:26They will look to wear each other down.
00:18:30In other words, as mentioned before,
00:18:31a war of attrition, perhaps.
00:18:35On the surface of it,
00:18:37as you hear the fans chanting for Castillo,
00:18:40and there are a lot of Mexican fans here
00:18:42for Cinco de Mayo,
00:18:43on the surface of it,
00:18:44you would think this is a very risky move
00:18:47for Corrales early.
00:18:48But so far, he's kind of making it work.
00:18:52Fabbit punching by Corrales,
00:18:54getting the caution from Tony Weeks.
00:18:56A solid, highly regarded referee.
00:19:00Great bodywork by Corrales.
00:19:01And how about this?
00:19:02So far, Corrales has rabbit punched
00:19:04and punched low once.
00:19:05So he's the guy that's pushing the envelope.
00:19:08Usually it's Castillo who's blamed
00:19:10for those roughhouse tactics.
00:19:15Corrales claims he sparred 16 rounds one day
00:19:18with four sparring partners.
00:19:19He said,
00:19:20I am as ready as I could ever be for this fight.
00:19:22Comes off a monster training camp.
00:19:24Twenty-three different fights all told.
00:19:27One of his sparring partners,
00:19:29Jose Santa Cruz.
00:19:31And here's an exchange
00:19:33as they go toe-to-toe
00:19:34as advertised in the center of the ring.
00:19:37And I think the one mistake
00:19:38Corrales is making
00:19:39is he's hooking with a hooker.
00:19:41Don't make the left hook
00:19:42your primary weapon.
00:19:43And Corrales is doing that.
00:19:46Wow.
00:19:47So an action-packed opening round.
00:19:59You've got to make sure
00:20:00that chin is buried
00:20:01every time you start
00:20:02banging with him.
00:20:03Now that left hook
00:20:03is working good on the inside
00:20:05and the body shots are working good.
00:20:07Faint a little bit more
00:20:07with that jab.
00:20:08He's looking to counter your jab
00:20:09with that right hand.
00:20:10He's going to come with that eventually.
00:20:11All right?
00:20:12But I'll tell you what.
00:20:13Nice turns on him.
00:20:15You were scoring first.
00:20:17You saw him.
00:20:22Referee Tony Weeks
00:20:23will give a warning to Corrales
00:20:25for hitting behind the head.
00:20:27Rabbit punching.
00:20:27Twice Corrales gets it done.
00:20:30Now Corrales went downstairs
00:20:31very effectively to the body.
00:20:34Ripping downstairs with the left.
00:20:36And he threw a lot of shots.
00:20:38There's the left hook downstairs.
00:20:39And the left hook was a big signature punch
00:20:43for Corrales in round one.
00:20:45But it's dangerous
00:20:45because he was countered
00:20:46by a better left hooker
00:20:48than Jose Luis Castillo.
00:20:50So this fight heating up early.
00:20:53Here we go.
00:20:54Round two.
00:20:55Out, out, out, out.
00:20:58Castillo in the red.
00:21:00Corrales in the white.
00:21:01There's a little bit of a danger here
00:21:08early for Corrales.
00:21:10He wanted to use the jab a lot
00:21:11in this fight.
00:21:13And he's not using it quite as much
00:21:14as I think he would like, Stephen.
00:21:16If he used the jab more,
00:21:17it would keep him at a distance
00:21:18from Castillo.
00:21:19And he wants to prove
00:21:20he has more than just a left hook.
00:21:25Showing he's not one-dimensional
00:21:26the last couple of fights
00:21:28really showing marked improvements.
00:21:31That's Castillo on the inside.
00:21:33He can rip those hooks
00:21:34for the body and the head.
00:21:35And if Corrales hangs in there with him,
00:21:36he'll give him an opportunity to do it.
00:21:38Yeah, that is Castillo's elbow.
00:21:43A right uppercut on the left
00:21:45hook by Castillo
00:21:46that tagged Corrales.
00:21:48This is a strategic nightmare right now,
00:21:51I think, for Diego Corrales.
00:21:54This was a ploy on their part
00:21:56thinking he could out-muscle Castillo.
00:21:57Maybe he will.
00:21:58And there he comes back.
00:22:00But wow, it's a tough way to go
00:22:01for Diego Corrales.
00:22:03Fists are flying.
00:22:06Both punches.
00:22:08Raining big shots.
00:22:11Julio Cesar Chavez
00:22:12is yelling to Castillo
00:22:13to throw the uppercut
00:22:14and he threw it early on
00:22:16and it was effective.
00:22:17So it turns out early
00:22:19a very inside fight
00:22:21from close range.
00:22:24A proverbial telephone
00:22:26booth type affair.
00:22:30What a surprise
00:22:30that Corrales chose this way to start
00:22:33but it's creating a lot of excitement
00:22:34for all of us.
00:22:36And on the inside,
00:22:37Corrales is scoring
00:22:38but back comes Castillo.
00:22:42He could just about put a piece of paper
00:22:45between them
00:22:45and that's it right now.
00:22:48Give him up, Diego.
00:22:48Give him up.
00:22:49And interestingly,
00:22:51it's Corrales throwing punches
00:22:52a little south of the border,
00:22:54not Castillo.
00:22:55Left hooks by Corrales.
00:22:56That's his signature.
00:23:00But Castillo stands right up to him.
00:23:05Oh, what a combination upstairs
00:23:07by Corrales.
00:23:09That lap hook hurt Castillo
00:23:11and that's a news headline.
00:23:15It momentarily stopped him
00:23:16in his tracks, Al.
00:23:18And then a big body shot
00:23:20by Castillo.
00:23:21And it was low
00:23:22but Corrales walked through it.
00:23:25This is truly amazing.
00:23:27Diego Corrales gets through this part
00:23:29and is effective doing this.
00:23:30He'll have made an amazing statement
00:23:32fighting for Castillo's fight.
00:23:36And Corrales continues to score.
00:23:45The second round
00:23:46even better than the first.
00:24:00Make sure you're working there.
00:24:02Acordate.
00:24:03Trabaja dos open
00:24:04y remata bajo.
00:24:05Y remata arriba.
00:24:06So te quedes.
00:24:10Corrales working downstairs
00:24:11and now Castillo ripping
00:24:13those left hooks downstairs.
00:24:15That's one of the things
00:24:16he does so well
00:24:17as Castillo
00:24:18fighting on the inside.
00:24:21Jose Luis Castillo
00:24:22with the uppercuts
00:24:23and the hooks.
00:24:25He's great on the inside.
00:24:27This is where he likes
00:24:28to do business.
00:24:30However,
00:24:31Diego Corrales
00:24:31Corrales
00:24:32coming back in this round
00:24:34with better hand speed
00:24:35on the inside
00:24:36than Castillo.
00:24:37That was the key there.
00:24:38And the left hook
00:24:39starting to get to Castillo.
00:24:41You would think it would be
00:24:42a mistake for Corrales
00:24:43to hook with him
00:24:44but in that round
00:24:45he hurt Castillo
00:24:46at least three times
00:24:47with his own left hook.
00:24:47So Corrales immediately
00:24:49jumping on Castillo
00:24:51and he continues to do more
00:24:55of the same
00:24:55as we enter round three.
00:24:57Schedules for 12.
00:24:5812.
00:24:58At this pace
00:24:59and at go 12.
00:25:01Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
00:25:03No, no, no.
00:25:03Come on, come on.
00:25:04Keep up.
00:25:04The conventional thinking
00:25:07obviously was that
00:25:08Corrales needed
00:25:09to be the boxer puncher,
00:25:10jab a lot,
00:25:11work on the outside,
00:25:13counter punch.
00:25:14Uh-uh.
00:25:14He has gone right inside
00:25:16with Castillo
00:25:16and for the most part
00:25:18has been very effective
00:25:19doing it.
00:25:20Corrales electing
00:25:22to, as they say,
00:25:24fight fire with fire
00:25:25and fighting Castillo's style.
00:25:29Inside.
00:25:32Both men doing good work
00:25:34down this series
00:25:34to the body.
00:25:35There's that hook
00:25:36being turned again
00:25:37by Corrales.
00:25:39Castillo is amazingly
00:25:40open for that punch.
00:25:42And Corrales
00:25:43very accurate
00:25:45with that punch.
00:25:46It is connecting.
00:25:49Right now,
00:25:50the difference seems
00:25:50to be Corrales' hand speed.
00:25:53And he's also
00:25:54throwing multiple punches.
00:25:56He's throwing combinations
00:25:57on the inside.
00:26:00Digging body shot
00:26:02by Castillo.
00:26:04Go for a sec.
00:26:05Go for a sec.
00:26:06And a left hook
00:26:06upstairs by Corrales.
00:26:08Castillo didn't have an answer.
00:26:13White uppercut
00:26:14on the chin
00:26:14by Castillo.
00:26:16That's been Castillo's
00:26:17best punch.
00:26:18He keeps landing it.
00:26:19And Corrales
00:26:20just waiting,
00:26:22it seems,
00:26:22to counter with the hook
00:26:23when he does that.
00:26:24Even though he's being hit
00:26:25with big punches.
00:26:27Remember,
00:26:27Corrales has been down
00:26:28eight times
00:26:29in 41 pro fights,
00:26:31but five of those
00:26:32but five of those
00:26:32eight versus
00:26:32Mayweather
00:26:33and he had all kinds
00:26:35of personal
00:26:36and professional
00:26:37confidence.
00:26:38Now Castillo
00:26:38landing more regularly
00:26:39with the right uppercut.
00:26:41Got a right over the top
00:26:42by Jose Luis Castillo.
00:26:43This is where Castillo
00:26:44gets good work done
00:26:45and in this round
00:26:47he's starting
00:26:48to do it.
00:26:50Remember,
00:26:50Castillo gets stronger
00:26:51as the fight
00:26:52gets deeper.
00:27:00See,
00:27:01they traded hooks,
00:27:02but Castillo
00:27:03got there
00:27:03a little better
00:27:04with his,
00:27:05so while this
00:27:05has been a good strategy
00:27:06for Corrales early,
00:27:07will it continue
00:27:08to be one?
00:27:09I believe
00:27:09just a trickle of blood
00:27:11over the right eye
00:27:12of Diego Corrales.
00:27:16And a big left
00:27:18hook by Corrales
00:27:20to the head.
00:27:22Another one
00:27:23followed by a right hand.
00:27:25Corrales continues
00:27:26to land.
00:27:27And look,
00:27:27it's Corrales
00:27:28using his head
00:27:28a little bit
00:27:29on the inside.
00:27:30I'm going to tell you
00:27:31something, though.
00:27:31It's imperceptible,
00:27:33but I think
00:27:33Corrales is wearing down
00:27:34a little bit
00:27:35on the inside.
00:27:36That's what Castillo
00:27:37is hoping for.
00:27:39He's slowing
00:27:40Corrales
00:27:41and having his way
00:27:43here at the end
00:27:44of the third.
00:27:51Give him some water
00:27:54right now.
00:27:55I'm going to take
00:27:56care of this
00:27:56real quick.
00:27:58All right,
00:27:59now,
00:27:59what you've got
00:28:00to start doing
00:28:00is turning him
00:28:01a little bit more
00:28:02now, Diego.
00:28:03Okay?
00:28:04The only thing
00:28:05he's catching
00:28:05with a little bit
00:28:06is that uppercut.
00:28:07Right when you go
00:28:08to the left hand
00:28:08of the body,
00:28:09he's throwing
00:28:10the right uppercut
00:28:10off of it.
00:28:11So what you've got
00:28:12to do is you've got
00:28:12to double up.
00:28:13Once you've thrown
00:28:13that left of the body,
00:28:14you've got to...
00:28:15Keep throwing hard.
00:28:17Keep on.
00:28:18Breathe, breathe.
00:28:19Don't let him hit you.
00:28:24Don't let him hit you.
00:28:24Don't let him hit you.
00:28:28At the end of the last round,
00:28:30it was Castillo
00:28:31doing some great work
00:28:32on the inside.
00:28:33He had mixed in
00:28:34the short right hand,
00:28:35which became an important
00:28:36weapon for him,
00:28:37and then, of course,
00:28:37the hook,
00:28:38but throwing that
00:28:39kind of overhand right
00:28:41and getting in
00:28:41to Corrales.
00:28:44So a big second
00:28:45after that round,
00:28:46the old Corrales
00:28:46changed his strategy
00:28:47at all.
00:28:51Round four
00:28:52scheduled for 12.
00:28:56You know,
00:28:56Corrales has essentially
00:28:57made this a battle
00:28:58of left hooks.
00:28:59He's saying,
00:29:00my left hook
00:29:00is better than yours.
00:29:02I don't know
00:29:02if that's true.
00:29:03As good as his is,
00:29:05I'm not sure.
00:29:06You notice
00:29:06Corrales widening
00:29:08the gap just a bit
00:29:09here down,
00:29:10going to the jab
00:29:10to set up his right.
00:29:12That is a good idea
00:29:13right now
00:29:14as far as I'm concerned.
00:29:18Meanwhile,
00:29:18Castillo again
00:29:19unloading to the body.
00:29:22Manos libres.
00:29:22Manos libres.
00:29:23Corrales tying Castillo
00:29:30up on the inside.
00:29:31Out, out, out.
00:29:35Both these fighters
00:29:36have, oh my.
00:29:37What a left hook
00:29:38there by Corrales
00:29:39and Castillo
00:29:40comes right back
00:29:41with some sharp punches.
00:29:43Very hard to hurt
00:29:44Jose Luis Castillo.
00:29:45He's not a man
00:29:46you stop.
00:29:47Rock solid.
00:29:48He has never been down
00:29:49in 59 pro fights.
00:29:53The absence of a jab
00:29:55of Corrales
00:29:56is a real big surprise
00:29:57to me.
00:29:59Manos libres.
00:29:59Manos libres.
00:30:05They both fought
00:30:07great competition.
00:30:08I mean,
00:30:08Casamayor twice
00:30:09and Freitas
00:30:09in the last three fights
00:30:11for Diego Corrales.
00:30:14Mascano,
00:30:15Malelos for Castillo.
00:30:16And look at this action.
00:30:18It's amazing.
00:30:20Tremendous exchanges.
00:30:21First Corrales scoring
00:30:24with a series of punches
00:30:25then Castillo
00:30:26with a flurry of his own.
00:30:30Here's Corrales now.
00:30:31It's his turn.
00:30:33And back comes Castillo.
00:30:41And that one startled Corrales.
00:30:44A left upstairs.
00:30:46Another left upstairs
00:30:48by Castillo.
00:30:48And now an uppercut
00:30:50through the guard
00:30:52by Castillo.
00:30:55A grueling round.
00:31:00No, no, no, no, no.
00:31:01Still.
00:31:02Castillo just matching
00:31:03Corrales.
00:31:03Punch for punch.
00:31:04And you know,
00:31:05let's be fair.
00:31:07Jose Luis Castillo
00:31:08has not done anything
00:31:09untoward
00:31:10on the inside.
00:31:11Very little work
00:31:12with his head.
00:31:12Not too many low punches.
00:31:14He's been,
00:31:14he's fought a very fair fight.
00:31:16Now there's blood
00:31:17around the left eye
00:31:18of Castillo.
00:31:21So both fighters bloodied.
00:31:23No, no, no.
00:31:23Keep him up.
00:31:24Keep him up.
00:31:24And this fight thus far
00:31:25the war of attrition
00:31:28as advertised
00:31:28rages on.
00:31:30And this is a very tough
00:31:31round to Jax.
00:31:39Big punch there
00:31:40on the left hand
00:31:41by Castillo.
00:31:44What a round.
00:31:45You got to throw both hands.
00:32:13Throw it both hands.
00:32:14And watch the head.
00:32:19And remember
00:32:20to go to punches.
00:32:29As you look down
00:32:30at these two fighters,
00:32:33Corrales steps,
00:32:34steps on the foot
00:32:36of Castillo
00:32:38and kind of pushes him back.
00:32:39Come on, Joe.
00:32:40Here's where we may see
00:32:41a cut.
00:32:41Good right hand
00:32:42and the blood flowed
00:32:44after that
00:32:44from the eye
00:32:45of Jose Luis Castillo.
00:32:47And I do believe
00:32:47that is where the cut happened.
00:32:49So hopefully
00:32:49they will not call
00:32:50that a clash of heads.
00:32:51Come here.
00:32:51Hey, hey, hey.
00:32:52Meet up.
00:32:53White some of the grease off.
00:32:56Tony Weeks
00:32:57wants
00:32:57to Tibercio Garcia
00:33:00to wipe some of the grease off
00:33:02of the face of Castillo's.
00:33:03A fairly deep cut
00:33:04around the left eye
00:33:06of Castillo.
00:33:07He's got one of the best
00:33:08of the business
00:33:08in his corner,
00:33:09Miguel Diaz.
00:33:10to try and fix it.
00:33:18But it doesn't look
00:33:19as if the blood
00:33:20would be going directly
00:33:21into Castillo's left eye.
00:33:23Looks like it would go
00:33:23around the eye.
00:33:24At least that's what
00:33:25they're hoping.
00:33:26Now, are we seeing
00:33:27a slightly different dynamic
00:33:28in this fight?
00:33:29There's jabs from Corrales
00:33:31a little more distance
00:33:32between these two fighters.
00:33:34Will that be the paradigm
00:33:35for the next few rounds?
00:33:36Corrales suddenly turning
00:33:40from puncher to boxer.
00:33:43Shooting the jab.
00:33:44Flicking it.
00:33:45Let me tell you,
00:33:46Castillo's landed
00:33:47some good jabs.
00:33:48He is a little underrated
00:33:49in that department.
00:33:50What a heavy body punch
00:33:53and then back comes Corrales.
00:33:58Out, out, out, out.
00:34:00And Tony Weeks
00:34:01is allowing them
00:34:02to fight on the inside.
00:34:03He's not panicking
00:34:04and breaking them too early.
00:34:06Two guys who have
00:34:08tremendous respect
00:34:09for each other.
00:34:12Corrales just walked
00:34:13into that straight right.
00:34:17Conor's leaving.
00:34:18Let's go home.
00:34:20Unofficially fresh row.
00:34:21All even.
00:34:23That is exactly what I have.
00:34:2438-38.
00:34:25Why not?
00:34:26In this round,
00:34:29Corrales has boxed
00:34:30fairly well,
00:34:31although you can't say
00:34:32Castillo hasn't landed
00:34:33some from the outside.
00:34:34Castillo!
00:34:35Castillo!
00:34:37Castillo!
00:34:38The chance of Castillo.
00:34:41Again,
00:34:42the trading of punches.
00:34:45Whenever Corrales
00:34:46gives himself
00:34:46a little room,
00:34:47he can land
00:34:48that straight right hand,
00:34:49but mostly he's
00:34:51fought in this posture.
00:34:53Body shots wickedly
00:34:55offered by Castillo.
00:34:57Missing there
00:34:58with the right.
00:34:59Corrales missing
00:35:00himself.
00:35:01This, like the fourth round,
00:35:02very difficult to score,
00:35:04although Corrales
00:35:04might have a slight edge
00:35:05to this point.
00:35:07Out, out, out, out, out, out, out, out, out, out, out, out, out, out, out, out, out, out, out, out.
00:35:12Coming down the left eye area of Castillo.
00:35:16But he's undaunted.
00:35:19He doesn't hold him back.
00:35:24If the fight is stopped by an accidental headbutt before the end of the fourth round,
00:35:28the fight has ruled a no decision after the end of four.
00:35:33They go to the scorecards.
00:35:34We're in round five.
00:35:42Out, out, out.
00:35:52The executive director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission
00:35:56said it was from an accidental headbutt.
00:36:05You have to work on one side.
00:36:08You have to work on one side.
00:36:09You have to work harder.
00:36:14Breathe hard.
00:36:22We need a little grease over here.
00:36:26You have to work harder inside.
00:36:29Throw uppercuts.
00:36:31You have to throw uppercuts and rights.
00:36:33You have to work hard.
00:36:36You have to throw uppercut.
00:36:38You have to work harder.
00:36:40You have to work harder.
00:36:41You have to work harder.
00:36:43I'm alive.
00:36:46You have to work harder.
00:36:47You have to pull up.
00:36:48Don't do it.
00:36:48wouldn't call it panic but somewhat of a sense of urgency developing in that castillo corner
00:36:57blood appearing by castillo's left eye about midway through round four we're now into round
00:37:03six they called that a clash of heads weaving it might have come from a punch but either way
00:37:08it's called a clash of heads that means if this fight would be stopped through to that cut
00:37:12at this juncture they would go to the scorecards but we'll hear what some grass to say
00:37:18take it jim steve i just talked to dr todd chapman he said that the cut is a concern but right now
00:37:24it's not necessary to stop the fight they will keep an eye on it tony weeks did tell the doctor
00:37:28it was an accidental headbutt steve all right jim thanks very much for that clarification
00:37:36so now it's an interesting situation in the castillo corner of course he needs to start
00:37:40to make sure he's winning rounds but they know at least he can't lose because of that cut
00:37:46slide out outright he could lose anything on the cards on this round
00:37:50daniel corrales is hitting a lot done using his hand speed and punching in combination a lot more
00:37:58now knockdowns thus far in the fight a host of heavy explosive punches
00:38:04castillo in the red corrales in the white with the red trim more body work by castillo and castillo
00:38:14goes low three straight times and make that four there you go
00:38:22corrales working well on the inside though say what you want say that it's castillo's style say
00:38:29but it's his office but corrales is fighting very well
00:38:37every once in a while corrales takes a step back
00:38:41and goes to the sweet science but it doesn't last very long
00:38:46vicious right hand cross
00:38:50by corrales
00:38:50this is a clinic on infighting by both these men they're doing a superb job of working the
00:39:20body in the head on the inside
00:39:24it has been intense from the opening bell
00:39:31the earlier part of this round belonged to corrales
00:39:33castillo came on a bit who closed the last half minute of this round the best
00:39:38castillo
00:39:44corrales waves him on he says come on bring more on
00:39:51and he's going to start putting on the pressure a little bit
00:40:05but you got to you got to suck it up right here baby this is what's going to separate the two of us
00:40:20right here you understand because if you don't put it
00:40:23here's the thing diego if you get i know that i know that but you cannot
00:40:38here's where castillo at the end of the round started really getting to chico corrales will this be
00:40:44enough to steal the round for him it might be because it was pretty dramatic at the end of that round and
00:40:49and here's the point where you could make the inference that castillo was hurt or stunned
00:40:56or corrales rather we heard corrales tell joe goosin i wasn't hurt but joe goosin was arguing
00:41:01saying i don't care you still can't fight that way two guys who are taking the term boxing warrior to the next level
00:41:08goosin is diego corrales's calming influence in that corner
00:41:18as we enter round seven look at what happens when corrales is on the outside how he can land
00:41:24the jab in a straight right hand instead for the most part he elects to
00:41:30work from the inside and it isn't that he hasn't done good work in there but that's where you give
00:41:36jose luis castillo a chance to get his good shots here blood streaking down around the left eye of jose
00:41:44luis castillo corrales with a a welt developing around his right eye under his left eye as well
00:41:53now does corrales have it in him to have enough foot movement after taking all those body shots
00:42:00early from castillo that's the question the scoring wow for castillo on two scorecards and even i have
00:42:09it even at 57 57 i'm with trim smith on this one they approach midway around seven non-stop action throughout
00:42:19it is painfully obvious that when corrales has some distance between him and castillo he can land
00:42:26jab straight right hands even hooks but when he's languishing on the inside he's giving castillo a
00:42:31better chance and the operative wear is painfully very close round here castillo and corrales continue
00:42:42to exchange vicious punches in toe-to-toe fashion
00:42:51oh what a heavy right hand by diego corrales but did it did it even move castillo no
00:43:02that's the issue here castillo so tough to hurt has never been knocked out never been down in fact
00:43:13the area under the left eye of corrales is getting bad and the irony is corrales is doing some
00:43:23phenomenal work here in terms of combinations let's hope that doesn't become a factor and close up the eye
00:43:29this is truly extraordinary fight look at castillo he continues to work down to the body with the left hook
00:43:41both showing badges of courage on their faces back comes chico corrales and now castillo
00:43:48he almost went down for the first time
00:43:58his knees buckled and he held on
00:44:00he's dead he's dead
00:44:18you gotta throw that right hand
00:44:19you hear me it's all balls am i wrong okay giggle hey man i mean
00:44:26yeah water quick
00:44:31hey get to him with the jab
00:44:31give me up give me down now now
00:44:34mouthpiece
00:44:36not yet not yet
00:44:40corrales who had been hurt in this round throws a perfect left hook that nearly sends castillo down
00:44:47a bad break for corrales was that it happened with only about 10 seconds left in the round he had
00:44:52no chance to really follow up on it and of course you see the closure in that left eye there are so
00:44:57many dramas being acted out in this fight look at corrales showing the sense of urgency with his left
00:45:03eye nearly a slit a right counter by castillo with blood streaking from his left eye
00:45:18they take one step back and come forward again and rail away both winging punches you know in
00:45:25castillo's corner they want the right hand and it's been pretty effective for him even though
00:45:29we think of him as a left hook puncher a left and a right combination by corrales upstairs
00:45:34castillo back with the right hand offering now back to the body is castillo overhand right by corrales
00:45:46crowd reacting on every throw
00:45:55a questionable blow thereby castillo doesn't bother corrales he just marches forward
00:46:06and give tony weeks credit he's allowing them to fight not panicking and getting in and breaking them
00:46:12when he shouldn't both fighters tenacious relentless
00:46:25what could they possibly have left in the tank as this fight continues to unfold we're into round eight
00:46:31past the midway point the action just never lets up
00:46:40oh what a left hook by corrales opens the door for the moment
00:46:44when there's when there's just a little distance corrales is so much more effective wow except there neil
00:46:54still missing missing whizzing that right hand by the ear of corrales
00:47:05no signs of fatigue it's unbelievable at this frantic place the first part of this round won
00:47:16dramatically by corrales but castillo's winning the second part and judges remember the second part
00:47:21castillo jumping on corrales
00:47:26but he's able to regroup there goes a mouthpiece
00:47:31oh castillo wobbled by a left hand
00:47:35out there
00:47:38over there come here come here let's go let's go here we go
00:47:45here we go
00:47:47able to get the mouthpiece back in
00:47:51just a few seconds left in the eighth round
00:47:55again incredible action
00:48:00left hook by castillo just before the ball
00:48:05You got four rounds.
00:48:07Do not stop on me.
00:48:09Do you understand?
00:48:11It's about you or him right now.
00:48:13Let me have the end slow.
00:48:15End slow, quick.
00:48:17Okay, can you shut that up?
00:48:19That's the fucking end slow.
00:48:21You know what?
00:48:23Get on it there.
00:48:25Don't never stop walking.
00:48:27Look, let me just tell you some.
00:48:29Smother him.
00:48:31Kick him.
00:48:33Smother him.
00:48:35Keep your head off to the side.
00:48:37Oh, yeah.
00:48:39Yes, he can, Doc.
00:48:41Diego, look at me.
00:48:43You only got 12 minutes, 10 minutes.
00:48:45At the beginning of the round, Diego Corrales very, very effective.
00:48:51Look at that three-punch combination.
00:48:53Stunned Castillo.
00:48:55As the round went on and toward the end of it,
00:48:57it was Castillo doing the good work.
00:48:59The mouthpiece would fly out of the mouth of Diego Corrales.
00:49:03Challenge for the judges.
00:49:05Did you like the first half of the round for Corrales
00:49:07or the second part for Castillo?
00:49:09Now, this has got to be one of the greatest fights
00:49:13in the history of Showtime Championship boxing.
00:49:17You've been here longer than I have.
00:49:19Can't imagine too many being better than this.
00:49:21But Hagler Hearns here.
00:49:23Thrill eight, round nine.
00:49:25Thrill eight, round nine.
00:49:35Neither taking a pause or a break for more than two seconds.
00:49:39Thrill eight, round nine.
00:49:41You heard them tell Corrales you've got to keep punching.
00:49:45Corrales' left eye continues to close.
00:49:49These are, you can barely see out of it out.
00:49:53These are traditionally rounds, as you point out, Steve,
00:49:55that Castillo has done very well in.
00:49:57It couldn't be much closer.
00:50:03That is unofficial.
00:50:05I have the fight dead even as well.
00:50:09Oh, a low blow by Castillo.
00:50:19It's a warning.
00:50:21For the most part, we have seen not too much of that from either side.
00:50:27A great combination from outside, like Castillo.
00:50:31Castillo scoring with a left cross.
00:50:35Missing with the right upper.
00:50:37And another low blow.
00:50:39No, no, no, I can say so.
00:50:41You okay? You okay?
00:50:43No, no, I can say so. Come on.
00:50:45How big would it be to have a point deducted right now?
00:50:47One more. You have to think Tony Weeks will do that.
00:50:49It would be the third warning.
00:50:53Right hands, a series of rights and accommodations by Corrales.
00:50:57Castillo refusing to go anywhere.
00:50:59Another right hand that, that sent Castillo back materially.
00:51:03Castillo stumbling around.
00:51:05But then he comes back forward.
00:51:09Corrales throwing bombs.
00:51:13He's probably saying to himself,
00:51:15what's it gonna take to drop this guy?
00:51:17To drop this guy. Here's Castillo again.
00:51:19They traded right hands and Castillo's was more powerful.
00:51:29Now Castillo going downstairs.
00:51:31Left uppercut.
00:51:33You know, it's a misnomer to think that Castillo cannot throw combinations on the inside.
00:51:39People think he's an unskilled laborer on the inside.
00:51:41That's not true.
00:51:43He's a very skilled fighter on the inside.
00:51:45He doesn't just bully you.
00:51:47That's not true.
00:51:49And what a chin.
00:51:51Again, Castillo controlled the last part of the round.
00:51:53Will that win it for him?
00:51:59The right hand at the bell by Corrales.
00:52:03Right on the chin.
00:52:15At the beginning of the round,
00:52:17while he worked well on the inside,
00:52:19there's one right on the belt line by Castillo
00:52:21that could have been low.
00:52:23And Tony Weeks went in to give him a caution or a warning about it.
00:52:27Now this one, more dramatically low by Castillo.
00:52:33And Corrales pleads his case.
00:52:35You have to think that one more,
00:52:37there might be a point deducted from Castillo.
00:52:39But in between all that, as per usual in this fight,
00:52:41tremendous action.
00:52:43Look at the hand speed and combinations of Corrales.
00:52:45But Castillo was able to close out the round very effectively.
00:52:49He's been doing that in a lot of these rounds.
00:52:51And so combinations like this might go for naught for Corrales.
00:52:56We'll see.
00:52:57Very close rounds to judge.
00:52:58Come on, Joe.
00:53:02Round 10 scheduled for 12.
00:53:05Time, time, get over here, get over here.
00:53:10Time in, let's go.
00:53:12Tony Weeks checking the tape on the left club.
00:53:14On the left club of Castillo.
00:53:16They touch gloves.
00:53:17And here we go again.
00:53:21The WBCWBO unification lightweight title fight.
00:53:25Oh, what a left hook by Castillo.
00:53:28And Corrales is down.
00:53:30The mouthpiece comes out.
00:53:32Three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
00:53:38Come to me, come to me.
00:53:39You all right?
00:53:40You want to continue?
00:53:41Okay, here we go.
00:53:42Time, come in.
00:53:43Put it in.
00:53:44Put it in.
00:53:45They get the mouthpiece back.
00:53:46He was up at eight.
00:53:47Put it in.
00:53:48Put it in.
00:53:49Put it in.
00:53:50There you go.
00:53:51Let's go.
00:53:52Let's go.
00:53:53Goose and try to get involved.
00:53:54What a dramatic moment here in round 10 as Corrales hits the canvas.
00:53:58Castillo.
00:53:59Castillo looking to finish it here.
00:54:01He goes down again.
00:54:02Takes the mouthpiece out.
00:54:05Three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine.
00:54:12Come here.
00:54:13Come here.
00:54:14You all right?
00:54:15You all right?
00:54:16I'm a penalizer taking one point off.
00:54:17Time.
00:54:18One point off here.
00:54:19One point off.
00:54:20One point.
00:54:21One point.
00:54:22Excessive spitting out of the mouthpiece.
00:54:24A point deducted.
00:54:25Come on.
00:54:26Come on.
00:54:27He's spitting out the mouthpiece.
00:54:30To make matters even worse now.
00:54:32You gotta fucking get inside on him now.
00:54:34Dreadful round for Corrales.
00:54:36Down two times here in the 10th.
00:54:38Again, Castillo going back to work.
00:54:44And if Corrales can get through this round, the dynamic of the fight has now changed to the point where he may very well need a knockout.
00:54:51With a minute 35 to go, he's got a long way to go, Corrales.
00:54:55But he just hurt Castillo with the right hand, or at least pushed him back.
00:54:59That was astonishing, and he hurts him with a hook.
00:55:01Corrales comes back.
00:55:02A straight right.
00:55:03And now Castillo against the ropes.
00:55:07Unbelievable.
00:55:08As it flows.
00:55:15They're all standing here.
00:55:17There they go.
00:55:18Corrales coming back after being on the canvas twice here in the 10th.
00:55:25Now Castillo steps back.
00:55:27Corrales winging.
00:55:29Castillo's in trouble.
00:55:31Leak steps in.
00:55:32And the fight is over.
00:55:34Corrales with a remarkable, dramatic turnaround to win this fight.
00:55:39Unbelievable.
00:55:41Here you play!
00:55:42I think it's over.
00:55:43Come on.
00:55:44I think the wind Punissance war is over!
00:55:47Hiding the music and the Way of the West.
00:55:48Here I think it's over.
00:55:49Hey see, it is over.
00:55:50I think I'm the way of the left.
00:55:51A fantastic fourteen now size is over.
00:55:52And now I think it's over.
00:55:55anh sent steht dealerع ¡H temperatures and down the zoom there!
00:56:05hell before losing this fight he may have that might be the single most extraordinary
00:56:11comeback within a round to win a fight that has ever happened certainly it's in the top
00:56:17two or three and interestingly not a lot of complaints in the corner of castillo and the
00:56:22reason it was right for turning weeks to stop the fight is because he was against those ropes
00:56:27and could have been hurt badly
00:56:35what an awesome fight what an awesome round round ten and what pressure on tony weeks as we look at the
00:56:51jubilant but tired and hurt fiego corrales
00:57:03going in this could be a fight that people would remember for years and i think that's right
00:57:08baby we're a savage over here
00:57:13diego corrales showing incredible heart and courage able to come back from two knockdowns in the 10th
00:57:41and thank you well it was an extraordinary round obviously with an amazing ebb and blow
00:57:54first it was jose luis pastillo looking for all the world like he had ended this fight the first
00:58:00knockdown was a crunching left hand right on the chin of corrales there was some doubt that he would
00:58:07get up even from this knock down the mouthpiece comes out and corrales keeping his wits about him
00:58:15looks at tony weeks very carefully tony weeks who did a superb job of refereeing does a good job here
00:58:21makes him come to him and now the second knockdown again it would be courtesy i believe of the left hook
00:58:31there it is down goes corrales he will go down here in just a moment or two
00:58:36that left hook sent him down he will take the mouthpiece out often a sign that a fighter is ready
00:58:44to quit not certainly the case with diego corrales
00:58:48he also lost a point because he took the mouthpiece out so now this is clearly a 10-7 round
00:58:56and diego corrales is in a position if he could think of that that where a knockout is necessary
00:59:02to win the fight but he's more concerned about survival at this juncture and then with castillo
00:59:09coming in to close the show here's the punch that turned it around a left hook that he didn't appear to
00:59:15even get the greatest leverage on but it landed right on the chin hurt castillo and from that point
00:59:20on even though he took some counter punches from castillo like that right hand corrales
00:59:27had new energy and he was able to get castillo now we will see the part where the fight is stopped we
00:59:34saw it not in slow motion but in real time before there may be some controversy over this i don't know
00:59:40but you can see castillo was hung up on the ropes tony weeks not wanting him to take any more punishment
00:59:47perhaps there will be some that will question that stoppage it's easy to say when you're not looking
00:59:52at it in real time his head was hanging there it might have been hit again
01:00:00well he was a rag doll he was certainly looked like he was out on his feet so it's hard to criticize tony
01:00:07weeks for that stoppage but clearly disappointed fans for jose luis castillo when their fighter was
01:00:13so close to victory so she goes the band following the nine month layoff diego corrales beats jose
01:00:22luis castillo he's number one in the lightweight division let's get the official word from our
01:00:29ring announcer of stimulated children ladies and gentlemen we have the time two minutes six seconds
01:00:39in round number 10 a referee in charge tony weeks stops the contest the winner by way of technical
01:00:48knockout he is now the wbc and the wbo lightweight champion of the world diego chico
01:00:59corrales
01:01:08ladies and gentlemen having a hand of recognition for an incredible effort after we hear from jim
01:01:14gray in the ring we are going to take another look at that sensational 10th round that dramatic

01:02:03said it's a great honor to be in there with somebody a great champion and uh he gave me give me a chance
01:02:09to prove that i'm a great i'm a great warrior a great champion um it's great chico let me ask you
01:02:13about that 10th round you're almost counted out twice you went down twice as we take a look at it
01:02:19down we take a look at it here this one the first time tell us what's going through your mind and how
01:02:25you had the wherewithal to continue it was a great shot i'll tell you what i actually expected him to
01:02:30to shoot up top he didn't he came downstairs with it i went down he landed a great left foot it was a
01:02:35great right on the button a awesome shot and here is the second knockdown what's happening here
01:02:41chico a little bit of buzz about me um just a good accumulation of punches did you have all of
01:02:49your wits about you right here and did you know you were going to be able to get up yeah i knew i
01:02:54was going to get up i mean when i got up i sat down my knees for a second um just catch my breath
01:02:59and uh got up and moved did you help yourself twice you spit out your mouthpiece and tony weeks
01:03:05threw it out of the of the ring did that give you some extra time about the first time
01:03:10honestly the second time yeah i think i was like wow but i didn't mean to drop is what it was i
01:03:14didn't i meant to keep it in my hand i didn't mean to drop it it came out of my pulled out and it
01:03:18dropped by accident you know it's bad grips with the gloves so but i didn't mean to like that then you
01:03:23get a low blow and you're going to go a 10-7 round right so if the if the match was tied and we don't
01:03:28have the official cards yet but it's pretty close you're in a position now where exactly you could lose
01:03:34this fight how did you come up with these punches right here to end this fight um just you know what i just
01:03:39caught with a good i caught with a good good left hook inside and i knew you know what not to let
01:03:44him off the hook and i he's a great warrior my my idea is just to finish it off once i hurt him
01:03:49i got i gotta keep it going and there's no way i'm gonna let him off the hook did you think tony
01:03:53should have stopped the fight you know what referee did his job and um we were throwing we've been
01:03:58throwing some hard shots the whole night we were we were bound to hurt each other eventually we were
01:04:03both throwing some great shots in there so you know the referee did his job because he did his job i did my job
01:04:08and um i'm happy with the way he came out how would you describe this fight an honor an honor to say
01:04:16to say with no no shorts it's an honor i mean like i said i've been waiting for an opportunity to come
01:04:22out here and show that i'm a real warrior i'm a true champion that will take whatever it takes to win
01:04:27a fight people counted me out so many times on every all the time he's counting me out so it was a great
01:04:32chance to come out here and prove and i was a warrior it was an honor it was an honor diego stick
01:04:37around with us congratulations this was this was the best fight i've ever seen thanks we're going
01:04:40to take a replay at the 10th round jose let's come in here what will you say diego to jose before we
01:04:47talk to him what would you like to say to him i'm proud i i'm proud to have met a great champion like
01:04:53that and to uh match match the medal with him it was just an honor i'm proud to have met such a great
01:05:00champion a graceful champion he's he's a true champion i and i respect him it was awesome it
01:05:05was a great honor to do this ricardo jimenez will translate
01:05:23i'm too i'm very proud to have fought a real true champion i thought the referee you know gave him
01:05:27all kinds of chances didn't give me enough chances but that's the way boxing is so is it your feeling
01:05:32that the fight should not have been stopped by referee weeks you know i'm you know i was hurt i'm not
01:05:48saying i wasn't hurt but i still had a chance i mean they you know he i showed that i could come back
01:05:53before in this fight but you know just the referee i thought it was a little early getting in there
01:05:57did you feel as though you had won the fight in the 10th round when you knocked him down twice
01:06:01i think the fight should have ended in the 10th round that he was he was hurt he should have been
01:06:20over i should have won in the 10th round would you like a rematch
01:06:23obviously you know yeah i'll take the rematch anytime he's one of the best 135 in the world
01:06:33so am i let's do it again muy bueno muchas gracias you're welcome all right steve quite a fight here
01:06:40tonight go go right ahead diego when you have it in closing to romero you know who's back there mexico
01:06:46mayor we love you we miss you back here you know you guys uh support your cancer research you know
01:06:53what cancer attacks a lot of people it attacks a lot of families you know it could be your your son
01:07:00your daughter your aunt your uncle your mom your dad your grandparents um support cancer research
01:07:07support these things because uh cancer afflicts a lot of people and it affects tons romero we love you
01:07:13we miss you take care and come back home soon diego thank you congratulations back to you steven now
01:07:19all right jim a very profound gracious diego corrales and i'll tell you what i wouldn't expect anything
01:07:27else from jose luis castillo saying he could have continued but i i can't personally dispute
01:07:33tony weeks's decision we're going to go back and take another look at that amazing 10th round here at
01:07:40mandalay bay in las vegas it's around that people will press in their memory books that's for sure
01:07:47an astonishing round and another candidate for fight of the year time in let's go yeah there was
01:07:54already a great fight this year this one equals it i'll tell you that early in the round
01:07:59it was a very good beginning for corrales until he got hit with this left hand he was really pushing
01:08:12castillo back and then got hit with this big left hand right on the chin 26 seconds into round 10 the
01:08:19left hook to the chin out come to me come to me you all right we'll continue okay here we go time come
01:08:25here put it in put it in put it in put it in there you go that left hook was that left hook was as good
01:08:34a left hook as castillo could throw and then he kept cranking that punch up and this was so early in
01:08:40the round steve that it was not really you would think this fight was going to be over there's two
01:08:46minutes left in this round and when the guy's going down twice already and did this hurt and losing
01:08:50the mouthpiece on both occasions seven eight nine come here come here and tony weeks all right very
01:08:58precise in what he did now this is the interesting thing as we flash forward he was very precise and
01:09:03looking at corrales took the point away for the excessive uh mouthpiece spinning out dropping out and yet
01:09:11where tony weeks if he does get criticism and this is fortunate for him to happen toward the end of
01:09:17this round will be some people will wonder did he rush in his other administrations when he would stop
01:09:22the fight here's where corrales is still in huge trouble and castillo rightfully probably thinks it's
01:09:28almost over so a knock down at 26 seconds in then 53 seconds in another left to the jaw doing the job for
01:09:35that's the oh now corrales starting to uh turn the drama around there's the hook that did it there
01:09:43was the right hand before it that was the hook that got castillo in some trouble and the most amazing
01:09:48thing is how did corrales marshal these this effort and these energies to come back like this and
01:09:54castillo was still throwing counter punches that's the fascinating part
01:10:00now castillo would get or corrales would get him in all kinds of trouble against the ropes at this juncture
01:10:05he's very hurt and shortly we will see tony weeks from outsider with camera shot come in to stop the
01:10:14fight when castillo was against ropes there were 52 seconds left in this round at that juncture
01:10:22and originally very few complaints from the castillo corner but of course we couldn't see all of what's
01:10:29going on in the right weeks could have disqualified corrales for spitting out his mouthpiece repeatedly i have no
01:10:34argument with the fashion in which he stopped the fight
01:10:40well you can make a strong case for his action there's no question about that because castillo was
01:10:44against the ropes and looked like he was in enormous trouble i'm not sure i do
01:10:53so the last order of business is the uh the scoring at the time of the stoppage
01:10:59interesting to see how the uh the official judges had it here is at the time of the stoppage and what it
01:11:06was a split decision for corrales and remember though that didn't include the round in which it
01:11:12might have been around that corrales would still have lost because even if he hurts castillo and castillo
01:11:18gets through the round and doesn't get knocked down probably uh castillo wins the round paul smith
01:11:23uh the only judge who had it for castillo 87 to 84 and vanderweal had it by one point three points the
01:11:31biggest disparity in favor of corrales by dr lou moret our unofficial judges at press row had it the
01:11:39same way a split decision for diego corrales and of course there was still some fight left so
01:11:44considering how hurt these men are who knows if it would have gone to decision and dan rafael of espn.com the
01:11:50uh only one of the trio who had it for this man jose luis castillo you know i think that
01:11:58diego corrales was enamored with the idea of making this a war i think it was he wanted to
01:12:04make a statement here tonight that nearly cost him his championship and a win here tonight
01:12:10and i would even go so far as to say if he had it to do all over again i think he'd be the boxer
01:12:14puncher well he he's a man who's used to taking risks he gave up his uh his title to fight freitas
01:12:21freitas was winning that fight and then he came back and did the damage to freitas and made him quit
01:12:27and now we see what he did against castillo and let's say this about jose luis castillo who fought a
01:12:32very very good fight here tonight i think i speak for everyone when i say a rematch would be absolutely
01:12:39spectacular and why wouldn't we want to see one a gallant effort by castillo and now diego
01:12:45corrales is speaking uh by headset to the international audience
01:12:51so tonight a real fans fight in terms of best versus brett best to prove who's number one that's
01:12:59what it was all about as we wind things down from las vegas let's take a final look at tonight's results
01:13:04in the co-feature juan manuel marquez retained his two featherweight titles perennial contender victor
01:13:12polo unsuccessful and perhaps his last shot at a world championship and as you just saw in a fight
01:13:18of the year candidate diego corrales shrugged off a long layoff to to beat jose luis castillo in a war
01:13:25chico firmly establishing himself as the number one lightweight in the world stupendous fight that'll do
01:13:32it from mandalay bay as we close out another edition of america's fight night first saturday of every
01:13:37month for al bernstein jim gray our entire crew steve albert saying so long and happy mother's day
01:13:43from las vegas nevada
01:13:55so
