00:00With 54.5% of votes, Rodrigo Paz has been elected the new president of Bolivia,
00:16defeating Jorge Tutto Quiroga in the second round of the general elections.
00:20In Cuba, the Grand Magrabelde Festival concluded this Sunday in Havana,
00:28where delegations from over 30 countries discussed the role of leftist journalism in the world today.
00:38The Israeli occupation forces bond various areas of the Gaza Strip, in violation of the ceasefire agreement.
00:50Hello, welcome to From the South. I'm Sophie Fernandez from the Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba. We begin with the news.
00:56In Venezuela, the candidate of the Christian Democratic Party, Rodrigo Paz Pereira, was elected president according to official data from the preliminary results system Quick Count.
01:06The Supreme Electoral Court of Bolivia announced the preliminary official results of the Quick Count of Votes,
01:12that declared Rodrigo Paz Pereira as the winner of the second presidential round, with 54.6% of the ballot votes,
01:20while the far-right candidate Jorge Tutto Quiroga of the Free Alliance Party obtained 45.3% of the votes.
01:27The electoral body assured that this preliminary official results is after having preceded 97% of the votes.
01:33In that sense, the elected president will take office on November 8th.
01:37In his first remarks as Bolivia's president-elect, Rodrigo Paz reaffirmed that his government will have a new geopolitical alignment,
01:49after expressing his gratitude to regional right-wing governments, such as those of Ecuador, Panama and Paraguay,
01:55for recognizing his electoral victory.
02:03I would like to thank the president of Panama, who has already called us.
02:11I would like to thank the president of Uruguay, the president of Ecuador, and the president of Peru.
02:25And now, after being with you, we will have another number of presidents.
02:31Bolivia is recovering its international position step by step.
02:39We lost geopolitically and geo-economically.
02:45It cannot be that on August 6th, in the 200 years of our country's existence,
02:51not a single president of our neighboring countries had visited us.
02:56Among brothers, that is like not going to visit your brother or sister on their birthday.
03:01This cannot happen again in Bolivia.
03:04That is why the new dimension of Bolivia that we are building together will be with our hands,
03:09outstretched to the inside of the country to work with all men and women.
03:16Likewise, Rodrigo Paz reaffirmed that he has been in talks with the United States government,
03:21to be part of the solutions he seeks to promote during his term in office,
03:25which begins on November 8th.
03:31Gentlemen, we must open Bolivia to the world and resume our role.
03:35And for that reason, I would also like to thank Deputy Secretary of State Landorf,
03:40who on behalf of President Trump's government has called us to do what we told the country we would do.
03:47We are in talks for all support, assistance or cooperation to be able to forge a close relationship with one of the most important governments in the world,
04:00so that they be part of the solution starting on November 8th,
04:05so that Bolivia does not lack its hydrocarbons,
04:10and they fully support us together with other nations that I have mentioned,
04:16so that all the efforts we have made are for the Bolivian people and to begin government with determination in the transformation that we have to carry out.
04:28Now that he has been elected President of Bolivia, let's learn a little more about Rodrigo Paz Pereira,
04:36some of former President Jaime Paz Morora, who to his term was consolidated with the support of dictator Hugo Banzar,
04:43began his political career in 2002.
04:46His subsequent municipal administration was marked by allegations of corruption and controversial public works.
04:53He was a clear promoter of the destabilization that led to the coup against Evo Morales,
04:58and supported the regime of Janine Agnes, responsible for the Senkata and Saqqaba massacres.
05:04His government proposal, the 50-50 Agenda, is criticized for being a mechanism to suffocate the central government financially,
05:11and weaken its ability to implement unitary social policies.
05:15In essence, his project seeks to revive the neoliberal policies that deepen inequality
05:20and surrender national sovereignty to foreign capital in the past.
05:28For his part, during a statement, the candidate for the Free Alliance Party, Jorge Tutopiroga,
05:35congratulated Rodrigo Paz elected President for the 2025-2030 term.
05:40However, during the statement, his own party urged him not to recognize the results presented by the preliminary results system, CIREPRE.
05:49We respect the work of the CIREPRE in the first round, and we will respect it in the second round.
05:58I have called Rodrigo Paz Pereira. I wish him my congratulations.
06:03Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. No, please, please, please, please, please.
06:13I understand the pain that overwhelms us. Believe me, if there were systemic evidence, we would put it on the table.
06:23There is a provisional count. We are going to wait for the official count. We are going to have the records. We are going to compare them.
06:33We are going to do what works because the work does not end here for us. We have complaints and others that are being made.
06:42There are allegations of issues that are happening, but this is a preliminary result. We are conveying our congratulations, and we are going to do the verification work until Thursday with the records in hand.
07:00In other news in Mexico, the French writer Philippe Hristig presented his book Venezuela, the democracy that is a chronicle of the 2024 presidential election.
07:10During the 25th edition of the International Book Fair. In his book, the author presents his experience as an international observer in the presidential elections held in Venezuela last year, dismantling the right-wing media's rhetoric that surrounds the Venezuelan electoral model.
07:27Hristig considered that Venezuela is the alternative to neoliberalism, and through an extensive analysis, he details the democracy model that the Venezuelan people have granted themselves.
07:39At the end of the presentation, the public received printed copies of the text as a gift from the To Read in Freedom Brigade, who also invited the public to download the free version of the book from its website.

08:07In Mexico, the Juan José Landeta Symphony Orchestra for the National System of Youth
08:15and Children's Orchestras and Choirs of Venezuela gave a concert as part of the closing activities
08:21of the 25th edition of the International Book Fair in El Zócalo.
08:25The audience described the performances as a world-class show, as well as expressing
08:29their gratitude to the Venezuelan government for extending cultural ties with the country.
08:35The South American group performed popular music pieces by Venezuelan and Mexican composers.
08:40Prior to the performance, the ensemble directed by Cristian Vázquez presented a concert in
08:45collaboration with members of the Eduardo Mata University Youth Orchestra and the choir of
08:51the Faculty of Music of the National Autonomous University of Mexico.
08:55And now, we have a short break coming up, but first remember joining us on TikTok at
09:07TheLazureEnglish, where you will find news in different formats, news updates and more.
09:11We'll be right back, stay with us!
09:34Welcome back to From the South.
09:36In Cuba, the Grandma Rebelde Festival concluded this Sunday in Havana, after three days of
09:41debates over the role of leftist journalism today, with delegations from over three countries.
09:47TheLazure was there, and our colleague Belén de los Santos brings us more details.
09:53The founding of the Cuban newspapers, Grandma and Juventud Rebelde, was the reason for this
09:58international gathering in Havana.
10:00The festival, Grandma Rebelde, brought together Cuban and international media for three days
10:05to exchange experiences and rethink the challenges and needs of leftist journalism in the 21st century.
10:12Here we gather at the Cuban media, we have television, radio and newspapers, not only those here from
10:20the capital, but also from the province who have come to this festival.
10:26Alongside us, there are also important international media from Asia, Europe and Latin America.
10:33This is also an opportunity to connect and exchange with our audience, with our people.
10:39In the year leading up to the 100th anniversary of his birth, this first edition of the festival
10:44was dedicated to Fidel.
10:46His commitment to building rigorous journalism close to the workers continues to inspire communicators
10:52of the new generations.
10:54Fidel was a man who always took the truth as his primary weapon, the press as his rifle,
10:59a powerful force for the battles he fought.
11:02I always think back to March of 1952, when Batiste staged the coup.
11:06What did that young Fidel, with so many revolutionary ideas, with such a strong desire to see a different
11:11Cuba do?
11:12He took to the press, as a weapon, in what was his first shot, that powerful article titled
11:17Revolution, Not a Swake.
11:20The days have been marked by cooperation and exchange.
11:24Representatives from media outlets from Venezuela, Brazil, Vietnam and the United States gathered
11:29in the Cuban capital, aware that the challenging international context, marked by a coordinated
11:34advance of the right worldwide, demands greater solidarity among the international working class.
11:41The people of the United States don't want foreign wars.
11:45The people of the United States are having a hard time putting food on the table, are having
11:50a hard time finding quality schools for their children to go to, have, don't have medical
11:57care.
11:58You know, people in the U.S. are suffering because they can't go to the doctor when they're extremely
12:02ill.
12:03And yet, we see our government spending so much money to enact wars that the people of
12:10the U.S. don't even want to participate in and in fact are against.
12:14We have to exchange experiences and share to discover how to do communication and journalism
12:20in the 21st century, especially with so many challenges and so many threats to the experiences
12:30that we, independent and leftist organizations and media, defend so strongly.
12:37Three days filled with debate, exchange and conversation with one common goal, to strengthen existing
12:43alliances to narrate the present from the wisdom of our territories.
12:48Belén de los Santos, Denise Arabi, para Telesur, desde La Habana, Cuba.
12:55Colombia condemns Donald Trump's accusation against President Gustavo Petro and denunces
13:00Washington's double standards in the fight against drug trafficking.
13:04The Minister of Defense assured that the statements of the President of the United States, Donald
13:08Trump, are a disrespect against national sovereignty.
13:12In addition, he reaffirmed that Colombian authorities are carrying out an intensive deployment to neutralize
13:16drug production and armed crime in the country.
13:19Meanwhile, the President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, responded to the testimonies of the
13:23United States and pointed out that the boat that was attacked in the Caribbean had no
13:28connections with armed groups.
13:30Via social media, the Colombian president declared, the boat belonging to the fishermen from Santa
13:42Marta did not belong to the ELN.
13:45It belonged to a humble family who loved the sea and fish for their food.
13:49What do you say to that family?
13:51Explain to me why you helped kill a humble fisherman from Santa Marta, the land where Bolívar died,
13:56which they say is the heart of the world.
13:58What do you say to the family of fisherman Alejandro Cajranza?
14:02He was a humble human being.
14:03In the sense, Colombia's Defense Minister Pedro Arnulfo Sanchez described U.S. President Donald
14:15Trump's remarks of all Colombian President Gustavo Petro as disrespectful.
14:19Any statement made against the President of the Republic, using such terms, is an affront
14:27to Colombia.
14:28He is the President of all Colombians, democratically elected, and as Minister of Defense, I can fully
14:36attest to his commitment to neutralizing drug trafficking.
14:41If there is one country that has used all its resources and sacrificed men and women in
14:46this fight and has stepped up this offensive in recent years, it is Colombia.
14:51I reaffirm that Colombia is a nation with absolute conviction and commitment to eradicating
14:59drug trafficking, armed forces, and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, who is the President
15:08of the Republic and the President of all Colombians.
15:14For his part, Colombia's Attorney General Gregorio Eljac demanded respect for the Colombian
15:19President Gustavo Petro in response to Donald Trump's statements.
15:22The President of the Republic represents the unity of Colombians and deserves all our respect,
15:31support and solidarity.
15:34There should be some factual evidence, which I do not believe exists, to make such a radical
15:40statement against the President of a democratic state.
15:43In other news, we go to Ecuador, where the National Police repressed protesters in the community
15:48of San Miguel de Común on the 28th date of the national strike against the elimination
15:53of the diesel subsidy.
15:55The protest was organized by the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador, CONAIE,
16:00not only against the elimination of the diesel subsidy, but to demand a reduction in the
16:04value-added tax from 15 to 12 percent, as well as a state attention to education and health.
16:12Meanwhile, government forces repressed the protest with tear gas and stones.
16:16To date, there have been three fatalities in Ecuador in the context of the national strike,
16:21two of whom were shot during clashes with the military and one died from inhaling tear gas.
16:27In other news, in the United States, mercenary Jordan Grudeau, mastermind of the failed Operation
16:38Gideon, confirmed that the so-called Los Soles Cartel was created by the CIA in the 1990s.
16:45Grudeau dismantled the imperial narrative that accuses Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro
16:50of heading a drug trafficking organization, pointing out that it was the U.S. government that
16:55founded it before the arrival of the Bolivarian Revolution.
16:58Grudeau referred to the name of Los Soles Cartel as a joke among Americans, explaining it came
17:05from the patch of the uniform and was imposed by agencies such as the DEA.
17:09The mercenary pointed out that, regardless of who occupies the White House, the ultimate
17:14goal is to protect the flows of resources deprived from these illicit operations and maintain their
17:19hegemony in the region.
17:28We have a second short break coming up.

17:43Don't go away.
18:10Welcome back.
18:11The Israeli Occupation Army bombed various areas of the Gaza Strip in violation of the
18:15ceasefire agreement.
18:17According to health sources, the attacks resulted in the deaths of at least five Palestinians and
18:22several injuries, mainly in the towns of Deir al-Bala and al-Saweda.
18:28According to official reports from the Palestinian Ministry of Health, the injured include women
18:32and children, who were transferred to hospitals that are overwhelmed due to the blockade imposed
18:37by the Israeli government since October 7, 2023.
18:46In this scenario, the Palestinian Ministry of Social Development reported that at least
18:5057,000 children became orphans since the beginning of the Israeli regime aggression against the
18:56people of Gaza.
18:58Israel's genocidal attacks include the use of all types of firearms, which resulted in
19:03the destruction of infrastructure and society in the Palestinian enclave.
19:07The ministry warned that children are the group most affected by the occupation's attacks,
19:11as they have lost their parents and have been deprived of education and family stability.
19:16Meanwhile, environmental resource organizations report that the Gaza Strip is facing a non-precedented
19:26environmental crisis, threatening to unleash a long-term humanitarian catastrophe.
19:31Intense Israeli bombing has destroyed ecosystems, rendering most agriculture and land unusual,
19:38and devastating water systems in the region.
19:40Currently, the situation, described by experts as freefall, can be summed up in three critical
19:49factors, contaminated water, destroyed farmland, and a broken electrical grid, which together
19:54are bringing the Palestinian enclave to the brink of collapse.
20:10In El Salvador, authorities declared an orange alert in the country due to the heavy rains
20:17recorded in the last few hours.
20:20Authorities warned of the high probability of flooding and rising over levels.
20:24Given the adverse weather conditions, they warned of the high risk of rockfalls, which could
20:29block roads and highways and affect communities near slopes and mountainous areas of the country.
20:35For their part, civil protection teams specified that the highest accumulated rainfall was 83.4
20:41millimeters, recorded at the Zaragoza station in the Department of La Libertad.
20:46They also stated that the low-pressure system moving over the Barlovento Islands in the Eastern
20:50Caribbean has the potential of becoming a disturbance in the coming days.
20:56And like this, we have come to the end of this news brief.
