00:00normally I hop on a golf cart and we go around just a block over and there's this tropical

00:12tunnel that you kind of go through it leads you down a little hill and you come up over

00:18the hill as soon as you come to the top of the hill you can see the ocean it's been a nice

00:23transition from being a little bit more landlocked to where we have water all around us go out there

00:29and really look at the sky look at the ocean all the birds flying around and it's really just to

00:33go out there and say what you're thankful for it it's kind of a it's a religion in a way to me wait

00:38a second here we have my favorite color it's just like a peach coral is my favorite I don't know why

00:47they never get old to me I love them go get it there you go come on come on we always try to

00:55remind ourselves like never want to take it for granted we've created this space so perfectly fit

01:02for our lifestyle that when we come home we're so happy to be here you walk in and you get this

01:10feeling that you're definitely you're at home and all of a sudden the dog runs out to you and she's

01:16ready to go to the beach and it's just it's just a great feeling that we feel when we're down here it's

01:21so our own slice of paradise is how I feel like this is um home it just feels like home now

01:28we're having a heat wave you gotta have a little cinnamon on top oh and we're set

01:44want to come outside we got coffee come on let's go have coffee gotta stay hazel stay

01:53come here come here what are you doing i'm maria this is my husband jim we are at salt cured our

02:03cottage in volano beach florida where we are empty nesters we have two children riley and

02:10duster and a yellow labrador named hazel so in total salt cured has four bedrooms and three and a

02:21half bathrooms inside and then we have an exterior bathroom under the detached garage and our lot is

02:29about a third of an acre we're in northeast florida and so we're about three or four miles north of

02:36st augustine area called volano beach volano beach just a block off the beach and a couple blocks off

02:42the undercoast of waterway so we got water on both sides of us one of my best friends was in a ceramics

02:48class with jimbo in high school so she set us up but the funny thing is the night we met it was the

02:54powderpuff football game and so he was a cheerleader so he was just a cheerleader so yeah that was that

03:02was our first date so anyway that was that so

03:05my business partner moved down here probably about 25 years ago the only time it seemed that we could

03:12get together was to get out here and go surfing so that was our office basically you know we kept

03:17on saying hey this is where we this is where we need to buy a lot and so i think maybe seven years

03:23before we actually built the house and we found this lot we literally broke ground and i want to

03:28say march or february of 2020 built through that summer and around we were ready to move in and like

03:34november 1st and then when we did move here and i still worked in jackson it was an hour drive each

03:39way so his business partner that's lived down here all along they would say yeah it's a long drive but

03:45when you come over that bridge and you see the ocean in front of you it's all worth it

03:49i owned a landscaping company for the past 25 years we used a lot of different colors with instead of

04:00flowering the plant leaf you know some variegations emil green type plant and textures we wanted it

04:07tropical with some palm trees which are you know native to the area i love porches this is everything

04:16i would ever want of in a porch we've got ceiling fans plenty of depth if we have company over we can

04:22even set up a bar out here i just bring my little boom box out on saturday and sunday mornings and

04:27we have coffee time out here

04:29so when you come in the front door we come straight into our little tiny living room

04:37but it's the little living room that could

04:41we enjoy coffee in here wine have plenty of fireside chats in here

04:48i am a scrapbooker that's years and years since the kids were born

04:54so this is like when my son played with legos i mean you know you just can't beat these days

05:01the stairs just ends up being a good catch-all i had an aunt who put things like stacks of books

05:12on her stairs and i thought if she could do it i can do it and this is just a great little um

05:23so lauren and i are uh best friends we met in high school we even had kids at the same ages

05:35we were in each other's weddings we had you know our first child our second child just coincidentally

05:43she branched into interior design many years ago i like too many things um like my style can go in 12

05:51directions and i knew i would prefer to have it cohesive and i knew that she could help me achieve

05:58that but she would keep me on track like a couple of things i thought oh i won't remember that light

06:03that cone-shaped pendant i just thought for sure i would have and you were just like okay and then

06:08you showed me this fabulous gold lantern which came to be and just little things you know that

06:16are so much better the character that was added with the tongue and groove walls and the door and

06:21window trim and all of those touches really just set off that cottage feel yeah i think we viewed it as

06:28this was our house right it was even though it's her house but you know we were going to be doing

06:33this together yes we actually fist bumped it like let's do this and and it was just full steam ahead

06:40so we selected these chairs because we just needed a subtle pattern since we already had the statement

06:47making grand fronde pattern in the signature coral colorway i love it it made this house like when

06:54lauren presented this to me we're like that's the one these shells we have collected either here or on

07:03vacation i think these are like scallop shells i can never over i can't ever pass them by because

07:09i love the color so i just keep throwing them on the tray and then i end up adding another basket

07:14another basket you know there's a basket on the stairs i've constantly another spot to throw shells

07:21the island is a brighter blue than what what i would have expected i would have wanted

07:27but we love this fabric for the cafe curtains lauren and i found that and then we just matched the

07:35island to that this was my mom's um sugar bowl she that's her cute handwriting i have terrible handwriting

07:43she wrote that with a sharpie sugar so like yep there's our sugar bowl just those little things

07:49that just always put a smile on your face this is our mud room this tile people really love the colors

07:57and it was funny because it could go in several different layouts like you could make circles out

08:02of it or scalloped or all kinds of like a pinwheel pattern and we went with the scalloped shape thinking

08:08it was fun this is just like a big circle so we came in through the front door we made a circle through

08:17the kitchen and we still have the tongue and groove so this is our primary bedroom i like having the white walls

08:23you know a real simple color palette that was a dining room buffet from an aunt of mine and it was

08:30like a mahogany wood and i painted it and put new hardware on it transformed that into a dresser

08:37we were very particular about wanting the primary bedroom on the first floor for aging purposes um and

08:45these knees and so um we do have a bedroom upstairs designated for our son and our daughter who don't

08:50live here but i'm hoping one day they'll be filled with grandkids these spindle beds my husband grew up

08:56with at his grandmother's house and we were lucky enough to inherit i just think they're precious

09:03this is my craft space another cabinet to corral everything and put things behind there all my craft

09:10supplies i'm a big scrapbooker so this is what i'm currently working on i'm a firm believer in getting

09:19pictures off your camera roll into print i'll show you one of the best pictures of my mom and i'm

09:27telling you guys this is og beachcomber and this is her sister and they both died of breast cancer

09:34bless our hearts but i always say i'm sure they're tan up and has in heaven because they were always

09:40working on the tan and so i got mine honestly my mother and my grandmother they were really you know

09:51beachcomber type people they moved to florida from west virginia because they loved the beach literally

09:56that's why they moved like a lot of the shells i have in my house are from her house and this was a

10:02really special day um okay my mother definitely instilled the love of the beach and all of us

10:21and we did a really special outing taking her to the beach

10:35as often as i can get out here i love it it's kind of that uh same thing we said about going

10:40out the beach you know it's it's that reset and kind of religious type of feel you know birds flying

10:47around and blue skies oh look at that that's pretty cool we really like to be spontaneous we always

10:59want to encourage people to come stay here for a vacation you gotta you know we'll take you on the

11:04boat we'll go to the beach oh look who's helping um she loves produce embracing the beach cottage living

11:11is you know having family friends over enjoying the atmosphere

11:33our children love coming here our daughter lives in jacksonville beach so she's only about

11:4030 to 40 minutes away but we have we love having them come because it gets big empty nesters gets

11:46a little quiet you know so it's nice to have some commotion in the house thanks for coming jason i

11:53missed you good friends and family i feel very settled here like this is the final stop for me

12:00i don't have any desire to be in any other location you know sometimes people are always reaching for

12:06more and more and more more and i don't feel like i ever need anything more that was fun it's a good

12:12time yeah good family

12:17our location is just perfect i just feel like this is a home that we would want to keep for generations to

12:23come
