01:49Để có thể trở thành phố của New York City
01:53Nhưng mà chúng ta có thể tự hào và có thể tự hào
01:56và có thể tự hào và có thể tự hào với chúng tôi
02:00Và a cat
02:01Và a cat, so I forget the cat
02:02You forget the cat
02:03Ever since we got the dog, I don't care about the cat anymore
02:05I know
02:05Because she's so cute
02:06Good girl
02:07Good girl
02:09It also amazes me that there's just no one ever on this beach
02:18Yeah, we never run into anyone
02:20I like how secluded it is compared to everything else
02:23Like it's so beautiful but it's so, I guess, quiet
02:28This was a place where we could give them that freedom
02:33And the serenity
02:35And for them to grow up also connected with nature
02:39I'm Australian, I need a beach
02:46So I really miss the Australian bush
02:49Living in New York
02:50And so I was like, okay
02:52I'll bring the bush to me then
02:54We were looking for land
03:0710 out of 10 flip, Lolo
03:09I was pretty sure I would never find a house that I would like
03:13I can be picky
03:14We were looking to build something very contemporary
03:17Something that was sort of reminiscent of Australia
03:19You know, open, empty space
03:23Good
03:23Yeah
03:24We actually came down to this property
03:27To look at the block of land which is adjacent
03:29I came down here and I was like, okay
03:31It's gorgeous property
03:33But what's that cottage over there?
03:34It was a beach house trapped in a wood cabin
03:40So it just needed to be liberated
03:43We found out from the owners
03:45It was actually, they bought the design from a magazine
03:47It was a kit home
03:49So apparently it was like a mail order house
03:51That they'd sent away for the plans
03:54You know, it hadn't been touched since 1971
03:56So it was sort of, you know, wood panels everywhere
03:58A wagon wheel, a moose head in the house
04:01They owned the property for over 100 years
04:03They were just so lovely and so welcoming
04:06And I think they were touched that we weren't pulling it down
04:09You know, that we weren't just going to like bulldoze it
04:11For the amazing property, the amazing vistas
04:14So when we came to visit the property for the first time
04:19One of the things that we found out
04:21Is that the steps were completely grandfathered in
04:23Which is quite unique for this area
04:26Because you can no longer build or develop
04:28With these stairs down to the beach
04:30So that was a big feature for us to have in the house
04:32Here in this backyard area was all sand
04:38And it was basically completely barren
04:41So one of the things we wanted to do
04:42Was to create a backyard that we could enjoy
04:46That the children could enjoy
04:47And so we excavated, put in this retaining wall
04:51Planted these bayberries
04:53We purchased a property in 2013
04:58We started the renovation the day after we closed
05:01So Kate was already in here with a bucket of white paint
05:04And we got moving very, very quickly
05:07The aesthetic of how we've done this place
05:17It looks like a lot of Australian, you know
05:19Other homes, cafes
05:21This light, bright, some sort of light blonde wood
05:27Almost Scandi influence
05:28A lot of that aesthetic has been infused into this house
05:32We completely renovated the kitchen
05:35This had a drop ceiling
05:36Like just terrible like ceiling tiles
05:39Ceiling came up to about here
05:41And then when we blew it up
05:43We realised that we had these amazing beams
05:45And it was a shame to sort of hide them
05:47So we wanted to expose them
05:48As part of the kitchen renovation
05:50And then when you come in here
05:52We've got the living room, the dining room
05:53You know, we loved the sort of open plan of it
05:58The vaulted ceilings
05:59It was very sort of open and airy
06:01We just loved the sort of loft-like space
06:04And the sense of volume that we get in this space
06:07So this was a labour of love
06:12Because I loved the concept of the bell shape
06:15However, when it arrived
06:16It was on just on a thin, thin wire
06:19Like the regular electrical cord
06:21So I found like a shipping supply company
06:24And I bought this nautical rope
06:26The typical way would be to do it
06:28Just like, you know, tie it up
06:30And then have the electrical rope
06:31Sort of next to it
06:32But that would have bugged me
06:33So what I had to do
06:35Is I had unwound the nautical rope
06:38And then threaded the electrical wire through
06:41But these ropes that are designed for, you know
06:44Holding mega ships
06:45It was really hard to do
06:46So I could do about a foot a day
06:48I literally think I got blisters on my hands doing this
06:50Most Aussie houses are much more indoor-outdoor living
06:57You know, just being designed to really sort of nestle into nature
07:00Not take over nature
07:02But just let nature shine and do its thing
07:04That's something we really wanted to try and emulate here
07:09Because there's just so much beautiful stuff going on outside
07:12When we first bought the property, the deck was very, very tight
07:17Very small
07:18It was just not really a space
07:19That was particularly functional
07:21That we could enjoy
07:22So one of the first things that we thought about doing
07:24Was expanding the deck
07:26Redoing the entire deck
07:30And making it a true wraparound deck
07:32Was one of the ideas that we had
07:35The exterior of the house was not just building a bigger deck
07:39But we put in an outdoor kitchen
07:41Outdoor showers
07:42And really wanted it to be a place
07:43Where you would want to be outdoors all the time
07:46There's two outdoor showers here
07:52And then another one by the beach
07:54So there's a total of three outdoor showers
07:56And then three showers inside the house as well
08:00In this teeny tiny house
08:01We've ended up with six showers
08:02I don't know how
08:03I don't know why
08:04He likes to wash
08:05Yeah, I like to be clean
08:07So I think this folder really just shows
08:12How much care the previous owners put into this place
08:16And how fastidious they were with keeping it up
08:18Look at this
08:19I love it
08:20The original bath tub that they actually installed
08:23This is the quote from it
08:24From 1971
08:25The upstairs bathroom was pink
08:27And the downstairs bathroom was blue
08:32And it was one of these spectacular drop-in
08:35Kind of like all plastic numbers
08:38Oh look, yes, demonstrating it
08:39Yes, she's demonstrating
08:40That would have been Kate back in 1950
08:44Yeah, this is the kit home plans that they purchased
08:47And then these were the drawings that they did
08:50Just tweaking the plans slightly
08:52But this is what they built from
08:53This is one of my favorite pictures
08:57Because it's actually Chloe and Xavier
09:00Just after we had put in the new deck
09:02And looking out with their fake binoculars
09:05Like two little pirates
09:07They're able to just, you know, run wild
09:10And use their imagination
09:11I love this, like, profile shot of Chloe
09:16Just, like, just commanding the sea with her wand
09:19Dressed as a mermaid
09:20And they just had all this beautiful free time
09:23There was a swing on the beach
09:24They were able to just, like, wander around the property
09:27And let their imagination run wild
09:29Here comes a jealous dog
09:35Hi, picture cat
09:40Oh, now you pretend you like her
09:42Look
09:43She does love this beam
09:45This beam is kind of her safe zone
09:47It allows her to sort of, like, get up high
09:49And away from the dog
09:50So this is the primary bedroom
09:58It's actually open to the living room
10:04The dining room
10:04With this vaulted ceiling
10:05Which is a little unusual
10:06To have the bedroom open
10:07But I love it
10:08Because we're not a big AC family
10:11So we open up the doors
10:13And you get a really lovely breeze through here
10:15A lot of light
10:16So this is some artwork that I made
10:21And it says
10:23My pillow is saying
10:24Where are you?
10:25So that's something my son would say
10:27When he was about three
10:28Instead of saying
10:29I'm sleepy
10:29I need to go to bed
10:30He would say
10:31Mommy, my pillow is saying
10:33Where are you?
10:33And that was his cue
10:34To need to go to bed
10:46This is the kids' bedroom
10:47This is my little bit of Aussie
10:52These two boogie boards
10:53I actually bought in Australia
10:54Just I love the colour combos
10:55I thought they were really striking and fun
10:57We designed this built-in
11:01Queen over queen, actually
11:02And I was very adamant
11:05That I didn't want any support poles
11:07Or anything like that
11:08I just wanted to feel
11:09Like a floating platform
11:10It's a small room
11:12So we just wanted to keep it
11:13Sort of minimal and clean
11:15I just want everything feeling sort of light
11:18One of the real luxuries, if you will
11:44Is that quality time spent together
11:46That is harder and harder
11:47And more effusive to reach
11:49We unplug
11:51We drop into slow motion
11:54That's all that matters
11:57You know, it's just that time together
11:59Cheers
11:59Aussie style
12:01Cheers
12:01We've had incredible memories here
12:09But I think there's a lot more memories to create
12:11With our children
12:11This has been a home that had been loved and cared for
12:15For a hundred years
12:16And frankly hoping that it could stay in our family
12:18For the next hundred years
12:19There you go Kate, catch
12:21Thanks
12:22Look, she's so curious
12:25I know
12:26And of course the dream is one day
12:29That they would come with their children
12:31I'll let go
12:33I'll let go
12:34One, two, three
12:35That's it, we did it
12:36We did it
12:37We did it
12:38That is what I hope is in the future
12:43For us and for this house
12:45Memories can be created for a long time
12:47It's been created for a long time
