00:10He may be stepping back from the stage,

00:12but Billy Joel is making sure fans know he's still very much in a New York state of mind.

00:17In a new interview with People, the 76-year-old music legend opened up about a recent diagnosis

00:23that he called SCARY, a brain disorder known as normal pressure hydrocephalus, or NPH.

00:30It's a condition that's not widely understood even by those who suffer from it,

00:34and Joel admitted he hadn't heard of it until his own experience.

00:38The condition, which affects balance, vision, and even hearing,

00:41first became noticeable earlier this year when Joel felt like he was constantly on a rocking boat.

00:47That dizzying sensation eventually led him to seek medical help,

00:51resulting in a diagnosis that explained his symptoms but also meant major changes.

00:56It was scary, he admitted, but I'm okay.

00:59Joel emphasized that while the diagnosis was disturbing,

01:02he's getting treatment and staying optimistic about the road ahead.

01:05I know a lot of people are worried about me and my health,

01:08but I just want to let them know, don't worry, I'm not deathly ill.

01:12In May, he officially canceled all of his 2025 concerts,

01:16saying that the condition had been exasperated by recent performances,

01:20and that he'd been advised to rest and undergo physical therapy.

01:23A statement from Joel's team reassured fans that he's receiving excellent care

01:27and is grateful for all the love and support coming his way.

01:30His wife, Alexis Roderick, took to Instagram to thank fans for the outpouring of love,

01:35calling Billy the heart of their family and saying they're hopeful for his full recovery.

01:40Joel's daughter, Alexa Ray, echoed that support, writing,

01:43We love you and we got you, pop, and calling her father the most resilient man she's ever known.

01:48Though he missed the world premiere of his new HBO documentary, Billy Joel and So It Goes,

01:53those closest to him say he's focused on healing and on being there for his family.

01:58The two-part special takes fans through the highs and lows of his iconic career,
