00:00Foreign adversaries are now using the assassination of Charlie Kirk
00:04to further divide Americans, according to a report from NewsGuard.
00:12NewsGuard found most of the misinformation came from Russia, China and Iran.
00:17They found 6,200 mentions of Kirk's name across state-run media in those countries.
00:23A lot of it has been pushing anti-Western sentiment
00:26and sort of seizing on the news and the interest in the topic
00:30to push their respective geopolitical interests.
00:33Each nation had similar goals but framed it in a different way.
00:38Russia framed it against Ukraine, linking Kirk's murder to U.S. military aid for Kyiv.
00:45Several headlines in Russia even linked the killing to President Volodymyr Zelensky.
00:50Iran framed it against Israel, claiming the Israelis orchestrated the attack
00:55over Kirk's initial hesitation to military strikes on Iran.
01:00China spread false claims about accused killer Tyler Robinson to paint the U.S. as divided.
01:07A lot of the coverage we were seeing was sort of aiming to amplify
01:10a lot of the existing divisions and debates going on.
01:14NewsGuard also found this isn't the first time foreign state media
01:18has used big news stories to stoke division.
01:21With the Los Angeles protests earlier this year and the pro-Palestinian protests
01:27that broke out across U.S. college campuses last year,
01:30they similarly seized on these events to push their narratives about Ukraine or Israel
01:36or whatever enemy it is and trying to implicate them in that attack
01:41and sort of drum up support for, you know, their motive.
01:45It is important to fact-check any information you find on the Internet,
01:51especially on social media and from unknown sources.
