00:00Tears were shed, dancers filled the aisles, and fans packed theaters for Taylor Swift, the official release party of a showgirl, in theaters over the weekend.
00:10No surprise here, Swift's movie, which landed the same day as her 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl, danced to the top of the domestic box office with $33 million in ticket sales.
00:23Friday's album Drop kicked off a full weekend of Swift celebrations, from listening parties and midnight Target openings for the Vinyl Hunters, to a three-day movie event that had fans singing along in theaters.
00:41And according to AMC, Swift's film is the first album debut movie ever to open at number one at the domestic box office.
00:50This is the record I've been wanting to make for a very long time.
00:54But even with Swift calling this her most personal project yet, The Life of a Showgirl is dividing fans and critics alike.
01:02Some praise the creative risk, others say it's not her strongest era.
01:08Music site Pitchfork rated the album a 5.9 out of 10 Monday morning, Swift's lowest score to date,
01:14writing that a dozen albums in, Taylor Swift's never been bigger, and her music's never been less compelling.
01:22Still, Swift's star power is unmatched.
01:25Her film outperformed Dwayne Johnson's The Smashing Machine, which landed third with just $6 million.
01:31And Billboard reports Swift sold a massive 2.7 million copies of The Life of a Showgirl on day one.
01:38It's the second-largest sales week for an album in modern history, so even when opinions are split, Swift still wins the weekend.
