00:00Welcome to the video from the Car Magazine Tuning Blog.
00:04Today we're talking about the Ford Explorer,
00:06a fully electric SUV based on the VW Group's modular electric platform
00:11and now available with a new entry-level version called Style starting at around €40,000.
00:18The new Explorer's styling was unveiled back in March 2023,
00:22while the technical specifications weren't released until about a year later.
00:26However, the model has been available to order since March 2024,
00:31and deliveries began in August of that year.
00:34The new Explorer, in a sense, replaces its more-than-5-meter-long plug-in hybrid predecessor,
00:41which Ford had offered in Europe since 2020
00:43and which was discontinued shortly before the launch of the all-electric model.
00:48At around 4.5 meters long,
00:51the current Explorer is around 12 centimeters shorter than the VW ID.4,
00:55to which it is technically closely related.
00:59In terms of height and wheelbase,
01:01there are hardly any differences to the Volkswagen,
01:03while overall the Explorer competes more closely with the Skoda Fabia.
01:08Other compact SUVs, such as the Renault Scenic Electric,
01:12are also direct competitors.
01:14The model range now includes four different drive variants.
01:18New additions include two rear-wheel drive versions,
01:23one with 125 kilowatts and a 52 kilowatts battery,
01:27and one with 150 kilowatts and a 79 kilowatts battery.
01:33This new 150 kilowatts version is offered exclusively in the mid-level select trim level.
01:39The new entry-level 125 kilowatts variant, however,
01:43is available in the style and premium trim levels.
01:47These are joined by two more powerful variants,
01:50one with 210 kilowatts rear-wheel drive and a 77 kilowatts battery,
01:55and one is an all-wheel drive version with 250 kilowatts and 79 kilowatts.
02:02Both top-of-the-line engines are available in the higher select and premium trim levels.
02:06The newly introduced styled trim level is currently only listed in the price list.
02:13It is not yet available in the online configurator.
02:17The same applies to the sister model, the Ford Capri,
02:20which features similar technology but a coupe-like body.
02:24In the styled trim level,
02:26the price list now starts at around 40,000 euros for the base version with 125 kilowatts.
02:32The select line is around 49,000 euros for both the 150 kilowatts and 210 kilowatts versions.
02:41The premium variant with 125 kilowatts costs around 46,000 euros.
02:48The 210 kilowatts version costs around 53,000 euros,
02:53and the all-wheel drive version with 250 kilowatts costs around 57,000 euros.
02:58There are some interesting technical details.
03:02The fuel consumption figures have been slightly revised upwards since the initial presentation in March 2024.
03:08While a minimum of just under 14 kilowatts hours per 100 kilometers was specified for the base version at that time,
03:16Ford now specifies a minimum of 14.5 kilowatts hours.
03:20According to Ford, the 210 kilowatts variant with the 77 kilowatts battery has a maximum range of up to 602 kilometers.
03:31There are also differences in charging capacities.
03:35The new 79 kilowatts-hour battery can be charged with up to 185 kilowatts.
03:41The 77 kilowatts-hour battery can only be charged with 135 kilowatts.
03:45The smaller 50 kilowatts-hour battery, on the other hand, offers a maximum charging capacity of 145 kilowatts,
03:52which is more than the larger 77 kilowatts battery.
03:56Charging time is between 25 and 28 minutes, depending on the version.
04:01Approximately 15 kilometers of range can be recharged per minute,
04:05which corresponds to a charging speed of around 15.2 kilometers per minute.
04:11Ford has also made some changes to the interior.
04:14The cockpit is dominated by a 5-inch display behind the steering wheel.
04:19The P, N, R, and D driving modes are activated via a bulky lever on the right of the steering wheel.
04:26In the center is a vertically mounted 14.6-inch touchscreen,
04:30which can be folded up like in the car brakes.
04:33Behind it is a small secret compartment.
04:36A customizable home screen and large slide controls for the climate control are intended to simplify handling.
04:42The center console offers generous storage space.
04:46Two USB-C ports are located in the front, and two more are located in the rear seats.
04:52The trunk holds between 540 and 1,400 liters, depending on the rear seat position.
04:58The Explorer lacks a frunk or additional storage space under the hood.
05:03The new base-styled trim already includes a solid basic equipment package, LED lights, rain sensor, 19-inch steel wheels,
05:13electrically adjustable heated and folding exterior mirrors, dual-zone automatic climate control,
05:18front and rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera, and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
05:24A variable trunk floor is also included.
05:29A comprehensive package of assistance systems is also standard, including adaptive cruise control,
05:35lane departure warning, blind spot warning, and a collision avoidance system.
05:39The next higher trim level, Select, adds 19-inch lightweight wheels, keyless entry and start, heated seats and steering wheel,
05:49and illuminated exterior door handles.
05:51The premium equipment also includes matrix LED headlights, 20-inch alloy wheels,
05:59an electrically adjustable driver's seat with massage function, a through-loading compartment in the rear seat,
06:05a sensor-operated tailgate, and an inductive smartphone charging pad.
06:09The list of optional extras includes a driver assistance package with a head-up display and surround view camera,
06:18a high-quality audio system from Bang & Olufsen, a large panoramic glass roof, and a trailer hitch.
