00:00Guys, I was really looking forward to making this video, today we have something very special to me and that is the Asus Rock Alley X.
00:08As a PC enthusiast, I think it's amazing to have the opportunity to review this beast.
00:12And here it is, and it's a beauty, but I'm going to tell you in advance that this video isn't all going to be praised because it also has its dark side,
00:19although I honestly have to say that there are also many things that are very good.
00:21Hello, how are you? I'm TechnoForce and today we're going to do an honest review of the Asus Rock Alley X,
00:27a console handheld PC to play all your PC games. And with that said, let's get started.
00:36As you saw in the intro, I've tested several of the most popular machines today,
00:40the Steam Deck, the Lenovo Legion Go, the normal Asus and the X,
00:44and even one of the top Chinese ones called the AODEA1 Pro, although that one has honestly fallen
00:50into oblivion. Today we have to give the spotlight to the Asus Rock Alley X, which is the supercharged
00:55version of the regular Rock. And precisely how supercharged it is is what we are going to talk
00:59about in this video, but we are going to go step by step. First, we are going to talk a little bit
01:04about the design, because yes, apart from the color, some very important things have also changed.
01:09For example, starting with the inputs, the Rock Alley X only has inputs on the top,
01:14unlike other competitors. The first thing we see are the two USB inputs, one of which specifies that
01:20it has 40 megabytes per second. And that is because through this USB port we can connect it with the
01:26appropriate cable, of course, to a monitor that supports it and thus be able to use it as a
01:31desktop PC while we are viewing the image on the monitor. Then we have the other USB port that we
01:36will normally use to charge, although we can also connect other devices to, for example, have even
01:41more ports. Next we have the volume buttons and then, a very important change, we have the micro SD slot
01:48that in the previous version was on the left. We also have the 3.5 mini jack audio port and finally
01:55the fingerprint power button, which I have to add is practically necessary if you buy one of these
02:00because it's really convenient to be able to start Windows with a fingerprint, because honestly doing
02:05it with a code is a pain. And as you can see, we also keep the ventilation grills exactly where they
02:12were before. They've also redesigned their triggers, which are undoubtedly better now.
02:18Both the R1 and L1, RB and LB for the Xbox Ones, which is actually as indicated here, are slightly
02:26better and I personally love them because when you press them you notice the mechanical switches that
02:31have clicky switches that are very satisfying in my opinion. I hope you can hear it because it's
02:37wonderful. And then we move on to R2 and L2, RT and LT, which are wider, more comfortable and smoother.
02:45Honestly, in terms of buttons, I can tell you that there have been changes to absolutely all of them
02:50and it's a surefire success. The entire machine is much more ergonomic and comfortable and rewards the
02:56feeling of quality. Speaking quickly about the buttons, here we have some buttons that are a little
03:01higher than the previous model and that are also more pleasant to press. Another aspect is the DPAD,
03:06which has also been improved. Honestly, I'm not a big fan of this type of crosshead, but hey,
03:11the truth is that it works well. It may not be the best you can try, but it's not bad, it works well.
03:17Now, what I'm most excited about and what's better that they've improved are the joysticks.
03:22These sticks are noticeably better than the previous version. They have a different shape,
03:27a different texture and a different grip. All positive, obviously. In addition, the resistance when
03:32moving the joystick is considerably greater, which gives you a feeling of precision and
03:36quality. But it's not just a matter of feeling, it's also functional. They are certainly much
03:41more precise and the quality is very noticeable. There really is no comparison. If we turn the
03:46handle over and look at the back, we can see that the macro buttons have also been changed.
03:50They are now smaller and theoretically in a better position, which for me and perhaps my hands is not
03:55in the best position. But this obviously depends on the hands of each person. What I can assure you is
04:01that even pressing these is more pleasant than the previous one. And note that this video is not going
04:06to be a direct comparison with the previous model. However, it is inevitable not to be able to compare
04:11them because the improvements are there, they are noticeable, and what better way to do it than side
04:15by side. Okay, we have already talked about the entire design and the improvements to its buttons.
04:20Now, what else can we say about this Rockoli X? Well, for example, we can talk about its incredible
04:25battery. And while the previous model had a somewhat weak battery, here they have wanted
04:30to improve that section because it was really something necessary and what the community asked
04:34for. We have an 80W hour battery. That translates according to the tests I've been doing with
04:41AAA games in performance mode, 17W TDP calculated with a timer from 100 to 0 in 2 hours and 45 minutes,
04:50and in turbo mode at 25W TDP in 2 hours and 5 minutes. These tests have been done with the same
04:57brightness, with the same graphic quality and the same game. I've done this little test with
05:01Black Myth Wukong, all in 1080p at 60fps, all low quality. So yes, the Asus Local X has improved a lot
05:09in terms of battery life, if not more than double its initial battery life, and the truth is that this
05:14is very good news. The truth is that the autonomy that the Asus Local X gives us is more than enough
05:19for me. I don't have such long gaming sessions as, for example, I could do on my PC sitting in a chair
05:24with the keyboard and mouse or controller. The gameplay in portable mode is something a little
05:29more specific and less durable, so I think they've done quite well here. Now let's move on to the
05:34screen section, which is also a very interesting and important concept. I honestly think that I do
05:39have to criticize it here, but not because it's bad, quite the opposite. The truth is that it has a
05:44very good IPS screen, one of the best. I'm more into the looks. This screen is 1080p, 7 inches,
05:50120 hertz. And honestly, this aspect doesn't quite convince me for a laptop. I much prefer
05:56the 16D. And that's because of the chunky frames that we have both at the top and bottom. To tell
06:01you the truth, they distract me a lot, they bother me, but hey, it's more of a personal
06:05issue because as I said, the screen itself is quite good. Also, I have to highlight the
06:10VRR section that makes it super smooth, but it's not something that's going to change your
06:15life completely. Although it's still a positive point. Well, now let's move on to the software,
06:20where I do have to be harsh. First, let's start with the positive things that I see.
06:24What I liked about the software is that with the buttons on the Asus, we can open both types
06:28of windows, either with the left button, the simple format that we have, all the shortcuts
06:33that we can use most often, and the full format with the right button where we can navigate
06:37through the entire menu, which is here where we will find our game library, which is really
06:42good, but I personally, since I have all the games on Steam, I use Steam in big picture
06:46mode, although we also have all the platforms together. In that sense, I really liked it.
06:51Then, if we continue browsing, we will see that we have different sections that are a little
06:55more technical, especially the most important one is this one, which is the most complete,
07:00where we can modify the shortcuts that we can put in the simple format window and where we
07:04also have all the important options to control our Asus. Above all, the most important thing is
07:09the update center, but each of these submenus has a very important purpose on this machine.
07:14On this side, everything is fine and in fact, I really liked it as a first impression.
07:18Now, what is it that I'm not happy about? There's one thing that surprises me that hasn't
07:23been patched yet, and that is that when we open the shortcuts window, any tap we make to
07:28configure a feature doesn't just affect this window, it also affects the game, for example.
07:34And that's something I don't really like. That also happened to the Lenovo Legion Go,
07:37for example, and they patched it because the community complained. At first, this doesn't
07:41seem like such a big deal, however, it's something annoying that they could fix, and
07:45the fact that they haven't done so yet is quite negative. At first I thought it was one of
07:49the best software made for Hange LPC, but I quickly realized that it's not true. It's
07:54too simple and lacks a lot of things.
07:57It's true that, for example, for a normal user, the options here may be enough, but for a more
08:03experienced user, they'll immediately miss certain features that make it more uncomfortable.
08:08But to add something positive to this, it is true that the simplicity of this little
08:13window software makes it quite easy to manage the basic options that we may need, such as
08:18showing the desktop, which is something that you will really need a lot, and also the option
08:23to end a task, which is a classic F4. Another thing that I didn't like is that with this software,
08:29it suffered a kind of error that I don't quite understand and it froze. And you will see a
08:34video here of what happened to me while testing and that everything froze too much and didn't work
08:39properly, which meant that I had to restart the console for everything to be correct. This is
08:44not something that is going to happen very often because so far it has only happened to me once and
08:48it hasn't happened again, but it is interesting to show you these things so that you can see what
08:51things can happen to you. And ultimately, the software is not bad, it is quite good, however,
08:56it is somewhat basic. Here Asus, the truth is that it could push and put a little more work into it.
09:01And once we've talked about all the features of this Rokali X in general, let's move on to
09:05performance. What I'm going to do is tell you a little bit about my experience playing with this
09:09Rokali and I can tell you in advance that it has given me very, very good results. I've been
09:13testing demanding titles like Black Myth Wukong, God of War Ragnarok, The Last of Us Part 1 and
09:19Spider-Man Malaralas, and it has given me exceptional performance in all of them. The truth is that
09:24as a user I have been delighted to be able to play these types of titles in my hands. I have also
09:29tried other less demanding ones, such as Scurs, which is a kind of Soul G that is very good, to be
09:34honest, and Skater XL, which is a less demanding game and the truth is that you can notice and take
09:39advantage of the 120 FPS. And then I have also tried a competitive title like Fortnite, in most cases
09:45I have been testing it with various resolutions and also with various graphical presets.
09:49For example, I was playing God of War Ragnarok in 900p with high quality, FSR enabled and frame rate
09:57at 17w and it gave me a performance of over 60 FPS. Of course, if you put it in turbo mode, it can give
10:06you up to 70 and some 80 depending on the area. I even tested it in 1080 and you could play it perfectly
10:12well in turbo mode. Now, if you wanted to play it at 60 FPS at 17w, you had to lower the quality.
10:18For example, something that surprised me a lot is that in Spider-Man, my Morales we have an FPS rate
10:23of over 80, even 90, sometimes reaching a hundred and something in some areas, which blew my mind and
10:29this is tested with high graphic qualities, also in 900p resolution and 17 TDP. So imagine the potential
10:36that this chip really has. I'm telling you that none of the games I've tested have given me less than 60
10:42FPS, but it's also true that if we want to play some titles in 1080p at high quality, we have to
10:48squeeze them to the max in turbo mode and we can't always reach 60 FPS. There we would have to play a
10:53little more with the quality settings, either in low or medium, it all depends on the titles, but playing
10:59in 1080p on this screen is something I don't recommend, unless they are 2D titles. For me, the best thing is
11:04to play in 900p, which has a very sharp quality, it almost looks like 1080p and I promise you that
11:10it looks spectacular in your hand. Even for those who want to save more battery, we can play it at
11:14720p, which also looks great, because on a 7-inch screen the quality is a little noticeable, but
11:19it's not a decisive factor. So that's it, guys, I hope you enjoyed this master review of the Asus
