00:06fragrance. And indeed, it is. From an emotional speech from Angela Bassett and honorary Oscars

00:14to a star-studded turnout, here's everything that happened at the 14th Governor's Awards

00:18on Tuesday night. Hollywood's biggest names like Leonardo DiCaprio, Olivia Rodrigo, Margot Robbie,

00:24Bradley Cooper, Natalie Portman, and Charles Melton, among others, filled the Hollywood

00:29and Highland Center to honor Bassett, along with legendary filmmaker Mel Brooks, and film editor

00:34Carol Littleton, who were all presented with honorary Oscars, as well as Michelle Satter,

00:39who was given the Gene Herschel Humanitarian Award. Comic John Mulaney served as the ceremony's first

00:44ever host and brought down the house with jokes about the last year in film, as well as jokes at

00:49his own expense.

00:49For those of you that don't recognize me from the Tuesday night AA meeting in the Palisades,

00:54my name is John Mulaney. Here's what a great actor Angela Bassett is. She got an Oscar nomination

01:01for a Marvel movie. That's like getting a Pulitzer Prize for a Reddit comment.

01:07For her honor, Bassett, who many expected to win the Best Supporting Actress Oscar last year for her

01:13performance in Black Panther, Wakanda Forever, was introduced on stage to receive her honorary Oscar

01:18by her frequent co-star Regina King. Bottom line, Angela has lived a career for the ages,

01:24and I swear she is ageless. She is artistic excellence embodied in human form.

01:32Bassett accepted her award with an impassioned speech about the history of Black actresses in

01:37Hollywood that was a highlight of the evening.

01:39I call their names to acknowledge every one of them this evening for being beacons of possibility

01:45and hope for little black and brown girls. Elsewhere, Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick,

01:51who starred in the Broadway adaptation of The Producers, introduced Brooks, who won a competitive

01:56Oscar in 1969 for Best Original Screenplay for the film, and performed a song and dance number

02:01before bringing him on stage.

02:03It's springtime for Hitler and Germany.

02:09In his acceptance speech, Brooks referenced the previous Oscar statue he received.

02:13I miss it. I miss it so much. I never should have sold it.

02:19Then came the presentation to Littleton, who cut some of the most iconic films in Hollywood history,

02:24including E.T. She was introduced by Glenn Close, who called her a great humanist

02:29after the truth of a moment and a truly great human being.

02:32And finally, Satter received her humanitarian award and paid tribute to her son Michael Latt,

02:37who tragically was murdered just weeks ago.

02:40Tonight, I share this honor with Michael.

02:43The event was originally scheduled for November 18th, but was pushed into 2024,

02:49back when the WGA and SAG-AFTRA were still on strike.
