00:00Do you drink on the job?
00:02No.
00:03You ever hit anybody?
00:04On a job?
00:05Yeah.
00:07I don't think so.
00:08Martin Scorsese presented his new film The Irishman at the Rome Film Fest
00:12and continued his tour of widely publicized comments in criticizing theaters
00:16for throwing most of their weight behind Marvel and DC films.
00:19Scorsese said at the festival,
00:21The key that I'm hoping for is for theaters to continue to support narrative cinema of this kind,
00:26naming off other filmmakers including Noah Baumbach, Wes Anderson, and Paul Thomas Anderson.
00:30The director continued to criticize what is now viewed as cinema
00:33and clarified that his main wish is that the theaters support the films.
00:37But right now, the theaters seem to be mainly supporting the theme park, amusement park, comic book films.
00:42They're taking over the theaters. I think they can have those films. It's fine.
00:46It's just that that shouldn't become what our young people believe is cinema. It just shouldn't.
00:50Avengers!
00:56Assemble.
00:58A member of the Italian press also asked Scorsese why his film's protagonists are mainly men,
01:03showing few interesting female stories.
01:05A somewhat frustrated Scorsese immediately shot down the journalist's question, saying,
01:09No, that's not even a valid point. That's not valid. I can't.
01:13That goes back to 1970. That's a question that I've had for so many years.
01:17He continued,
01:18If the story doesn't call for it, it's a waste of everybody's time.
01:21If the story calls for a female character lead, why not?
01:24Scorsese and his producer, Emma Tillinger-Koskov, went on to point out that his films,
01:27Alice Doesn't Live Here, Age of Innocence, and Casino all feature strong female characters.
