Transcript
00:00Mark Wahlberg may be an accomplished actor, executive producer and entrepreneur, but
00:04the path to success hasn't always run smoothly. In fact, the Academy Award nominee
00:09admits that he and Leonardo DiCaprio butted heads before they starred together in 1995's
00:14Basketball Diaries. Appearing before a group of 500 high school and college students at UCLA
00:19for the 11th annual LEAP conference on Tuesday, Wahlberg said,
00:30And the actor assures us that any animosity they had toward each other before stepping on set
00:34quickly dissipated throughout the filming process, and the two formed a strong bond.
00:38The themes of this anecdote, respect and earning one's way to the highest level of success,
00:42is a key focus of the LEAP Foundation, a leadership program founded by dentist and the day's
00:47moderator, Dr. Bill Dorfman. Wahlberg was invited to speak at the conference because his story
00:51of coming from inner-city Boston to Hollywood resonated with the goals of the foundation,
00:56Dorfman told The Hollywood Reporter.
00:57The conference also includes other guest speakers like Anthony Hopkins and Singapala
01:01Abdul later in the week.
01:03According to Dorfman, 60 percent of these kids come from really poor families and their
01:07A-plus students. What we are doing is giving them an opportunity to give them the skills
01:11they need to learn to be successful in life. Throughout his address, Wahlberg spoke about
01:15the pinnacle of his career, saying he's never been more driven than he is now, and his
01:19downfalls, which included his previous arrest at the age of 16 for assault.
01:23Wahlberg's mantra for moving up in the industry was to work twice as hard as anyone
01:27else and never lose the hunger to keep going. It's having that marathon over a sprint attitude,
01:32Wahlberg said. If it was going to take 22 years, so be it.
01:36Before he took questions from the students, Wahlberg also brought down his morning routine,
01:40which starts at 3.30 a.m. every day with a prayer and a workout soon after. During his day,
01:45the actor told THR he also likes to mentor upcoming professional athletes at his home.
01:50I actually spent the last five days with various athletes in various stages of entertainment
01:54and athletics.
01:55We're talking about the future and what it takes to get to the next level, he said.
01:59The actor also got candid about a time when he injured his arm, which caused his daily
02:03routine to alter in a way that began to make him feel depressed.
02:06When I was down and wasn't able to do the things I'm used to doing, I started to feel depressed,
02:11and I never feel depressed, he explained. But the motivation is instilled in me. I was always
02:16prepared just in case, if I had to go back to Boston, that I would be welcomed with open arms.
02:21Wahlberg will appear in the upcoming action thrill in Mile 22, which is set to premiere August 17.
