Measles vaccination drive expands in east of DR Congo as conflict persists

A campaign to vaccinate tens of thousands of children in eastern Congo’s Masisi Territory continued Monday, as local health authorities battled a measles outbreak that has left thousands of children sick.

00:00A missile vaccination campaign is still ongoing in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, in the Masisi territory.
00:08The campaign is mainly targeting thousands of children in the region, but has recorded alarming number of cases.
00:15Local health care workers were supported by doctors without borders,
00:18who had been called in to support them as the outbreak took off over recent months amid an ongoing conflict
00:26that is now one of the world's largest displaced persons crisis.
00:31Well, the first challenge is from a population estimation point of view,
00:35because from the point of view of the vaccination campaign, the target population that we estimated, we are now more than that.
00:43Why? Because there is a population movement.
00:46The larger Masisi territory that is home to Rubaya has been under M23 control since the group took large swaths of territory,
00:53including Eastern Capitals, Goma and Bukavu, earlier this year.
00:58The rebels' advances killed some 3,000 people this year
01:01and worsened what was already one of the world's largest humanitarian crises,
