Warnings in place and several fire bans declared in New South Wales

A heatwave moving across much of the country has prompted total fire bans. New South Wales is of particular concern from tomorrow temperatures are forecast to hit the low forties in some parts including in western Sydney.

00:00Just a few days into summer in NSW, ambulances warning people here in the state not to become

00:09complacent.

00:10They are stressing the importance of people to be conscious of heat-related illnesses

00:16that may eventuate as a result of the severe weather conditions we are seeing over the

00:22next couple of days in NSW.

00:24They want people to be conscious of some of the symptoms, things like headaches, dizziness,

00:29nausea or even vomiting.

00:31And they want people to adhere to the warnings and the conditions that are out there to stay

00:37hydrated, to stay cool where possible, not to go out if you can during the peak heat or

00:45the peak time of heat during the day.

00:47We know that today temperatures have reached to the mid to high 30s, closer to the east

00:54and here in the west above 40 degrees.

00:57One of the big concerns for authorities is just how unrelenting this heat will be over

01:04the next 48 hours.

01:05They say the concern with that is that people are not able to properly recover in the evening,

01:11and that is what makes heat waves so dangerous.

01:14Now, we have also heard from the NSW ambulance today saying that they have received an increase

01:20in the number of triple zero calls.

01:22They were expecting more than 4,000 triple zero calls today.

01:26They are assuring the community that they have the resources and the capacity to deal with what may

01:31eventuate over the next day or so.

01:35We know that Western Sydney and the Greater Sydney area is really bearing the brunt and feeling the worst

01:41of this heat as well.

01:43Now, in terms of the fire danger, you mentioned that developing situation in regional parts

01:50of New South Wales, the majority of the state today has been under a high fire danger warning, and that

01:56is expected to increase tomorrow to extreme fire danger warning.

02:01And that will apply to some areas in Greater Sydney, in the Illawarra and the Central Ranges as well.

02:07So, authorities are nervously waiting for those conditions tomorrow to see how that plays out.

02:14Those severe weather conditions will continue until Saturday, but we are expecting a cool reprieve come Sunday, Joe.
