Virtual fencing now legal in NSW

Agriculture Minister Tara Moriarty spoke about the changes while visiting Orange Ag Institute.

00:00It is a lovely day today and I do have some very exciting news.

00:03Virtual fencing is now law or legal in New South Wales.

00:08This is something that farmers have been calling for for many years.

00:13The local member, Phil Donato, has been working with me and with the government

00:16calling for this on behalf of local farmers in this region.

00:21We've been working with New South Wales farmers.

00:23We've listened to the findings of a parliamentary inquiry

00:26that looked into the details of virtual stock fencing in New South Wales

00:30and now, after many months of consultation to make sure that we can get it right,

00:36it is now available for people to use

00:40and it is now legal for people to use in New South Wales.

00:43We've taken proper time to consider how the technology would work.

00:47We've got to make sure that we're protecting our biosecurity.

00:49We've got to make sure we've got the animal welfare conditions right.

00:52People will be required under the law to be trained in using this technology.

00:57They will have to be monitoring it to make sure that cows are safe and well

01:02while this technology is being used.

01:05But it's also a boost in terms of the things that it will monitor in animals.

01:10And this is a positive.

01:11It has taken too long.

01:12Our previous governments should have done this.

01:14Farmers have been calling for it for a long time.

01:16But I've listened to them.

01:17We've taken time to consult, listen to the experts, get it right.

01:20And now the law has been changed and this is available for people to use.
