00:00:01What a great goal!
00:00:02Oh, what a goal!
00:00:03Oh, look at that!
00:00:04Absolutely phenomenal!
00:00:06Rudy O'Hall!
00:00:09Welcome to Match of the Dead.
00:00:30Ten days until Christmas Eve and we've got a flurry of festive football for you.
00:00:55Five games on tonight's show, plus all the Premier League goals from yesterday.
00:00:59Joe Hart and Theo Walcott are the gifts that keep on giving.
00:01:03Or at least they better be this evening.
00:01:05Off the back of an important midweek Champions League win against Real Madrid,
00:01:09Manchester City travelled to fifth place Crystal Palace,
00:01:12having won five of their last six in the Premier League.
00:01:15Steve Wilson was there.
00:01:19Palace may have beaten City at Wembley 211 days ago,
00:01:23but they haven't beaten City here in ten years.
00:01:26Given their current form, they just might be backing themselves today,
00:01:30especially with some good news from the treatment room.
00:01:33Ismaila Saar and Jean-Philippe Mateta both start.
00:01:36Saar having recovered from an ankle injury.
00:01:39Mateta's been past fit after a knee issue.
00:01:42Eddie Nketiah sits out.
00:01:44City's Jeremy Dock, who is missing with a leg injury.
00:01:47Reinders comes in.
00:01:48That's the only change from the win in Madrid and the victory over Sunderland.
00:01:59Adam Wharton clipped over the top beautifully.
00:02:03This is a big chance and it's hit the bar.
00:02:06Pinot against the woodwork.
00:02:08Huge opportunity.
00:02:10Well, he may just, had it gone in the back of the net,
00:02:15have found himself having it ruled out for offside.
00:02:18It would have been very, very tight.
00:02:20Big opportunity.
00:02:22Well, it's been an exceptional season to this point.
00:02:27They've made so few changes.
00:02:30Crystal Palace and Oliver Glasner.
00:02:33They're working with a very, very tight squad,
00:02:35but doing it superbly well.
00:02:37Camada has done really well.
00:02:42Threads a lovely ball into his smile of Saar here.
00:02:45Saar!
00:02:48Well, flashing across the face of Donnarumma
00:02:50before Jean-Philippe Mateta could arrive.
00:02:53Just unable to combine with Mateta.
00:02:56But promising again for Oliver Glasner's side.
00:03:03Guardiola.
00:03:07Nico Gonzalez.
00:03:14Well, that's been given it.
00:03:19Well, I think you could argue that Richards
00:03:21was really just holding his ground there,
00:03:23which you are entitled to do.
00:03:25Cherky looks keen here.
00:03:28Oh, it's Foden.
00:03:29Oh, it's pushed around by Henderson.
00:03:31It's still in play.
00:03:32Reinders.
00:03:34And the flag has gone up.
00:03:36Well, trying to catch Henderson out at his near post.
00:03:39Reinders was offside when the ball came back to him.
00:03:41That's why the flag went up.
00:03:43Had this gone in, it would have counted.
00:03:45I don't actually think it was on target from Phil Foden.
00:03:48The England manager tucking into a nice little bag
00:03:53of Sunday afternoon sweets.
00:03:55It doesn't like licorice ones by the look of it.
00:03:58Mattias Nunez for Manchester City.
00:04:04Everyone in that final third of the field apart from Donnarumma
00:04:08as Nico Gonzalez finds Mattias Nunez and Bernardo Silva.
00:04:14Nunez to the delivery.
00:04:17Haaland with a header.
00:04:18Brilliant.
00:04:19Well, it's a really good delivery.
00:04:24And before it was even on the head of Erling Haaland,
00:04:28you knew what was going to happen.
00:04:30Erling Haaland gives Manchester City the lead.
00:04:33Well, it's half in which he hasn't featured a lot.
00:04:39But that doesn't matter because when he needs to feature,
00:04:43no one does it better.
00:04:45It's a fantastic header from Erling Haaland.
00:04:48Absolutely textbook.
00:04:50Pino here.
00:04:52Oh, he's found a little gap.
00:04:53Pino.
00:04:54Mateta.
00:04:55Donnarumma came out.
00:04:56Made contact.
00:04:57Well, VAL McDonough has had a look and no penalty there.
00:05:15Clipped by Richards tidily.
00:05:17Well watched.
00:05:19Ruben Diaz.
00:05:20O'Reilly can find Foden.
00:05:22Nico Gonzalez.
00:05:26Not sure that was a good decision.
00:05:28He's lost it.
00:05:29And Wharton!
00:05:31And that's why they've hit the woodwork.
00:05:33Well, Nico Gonzalez will be a very relieved man here.
00:05:37That was a poor decision.
00:05:39Was always going to be put under pressure.
00:05:41It's a good strike by Wharton in the end.
00:05:44But hit the woodwork, not the net.
00:05:46More frustration for the home side.
00:05:49It looks like they're on the brink of agreeing about whatever it is they're discussing.
00:06:02Foden.
00:06:04Nicely done.
00:06:06And here goes Chizani Reinders.
00:06:09That's a good save by Henderson.
00:06:11Well, Reinders here ignored the onrushing Haaland to his left-hand side.
00:06:19That's a good save by Henderson.
00:06:20That's a good save by Henderson.
00:06:21That's a good save by Henderson.
00:06:26Cherki.
00:06:38That's a really good break.
00:06:39Wharton just caught him, but he went on and Phil Foden scores brilliantly.
00:06:44oh boy he's hit a rich vein of form six in his last four now
00:06:52jerky does ever so well and foden checks his angles checks his rangefinder
00:07:03and sweeps it beyond henderson two absolutely clinical goals from two fantastic footballers
00:07:14well you've got a feel for him really crystal palace have done so much so well today and
00:07:19yet they have not tested donnarumma ismaila sarr tino hughes wharton
00:07:26cross and a great header from guardiol but it's sarr onto o'reilly not sure who will hughes shot hit
00:07:40ismaila sarr blocked by guardiol well this was threatening again will hughes shot it's a good
00:07:53block this richards and ketia eddie and ketia that's a good hit well finally someone has
00:08:10stunned the palms of joan luigi donnarumma and it's eddie and ketia will hughes nice hughes ball in and
00:08:20ketia climbing beaten in the air by o'reilly and a slip from tyreek mitchell and here goes savinho
00:08:26henderson backpedaling savinho and that's a penalty well you don't even need the referee to give that
00:08:35henderson is contesting the decision
00:08:39well the slip from palace was really unfortunate and savinho accelerated away
00:08:49dean henderson is claiming that's not a penalty but i don't think
00:08:53he has a leg to stand on and once he got hold of savinho neither did the brazilian
00:08:59harland missed his only premier league penalty this season but scores that one
00:09:11crystal palace nil manchester city three
00:09:15and harland has two of them
00:09:18not even a hint of doubt
00:09:24well perfection is hard to achieve but he won't stop aspiring for it for his team
00:09:34i just want to ask you about phil foden he's in a terrific vein of form at the moment i mean
00:09:40scoring goals assists everything is there yeah it is today didn't do a good game today didn't play
00:09:46good uh he lost a lot of balls he was so in a rush in every every action and if he has to be with
00:09:52one tempo i had to play more calm keep the ball pass the ball and in the right moment make a change
00:09:57the gear but at the end was so many times he's so young so at the end had margis improve he listened
00:10:03and and i think uh yeah i'd say that he's been doing an incredible terrific season
00:10:10yeah it's a good thing that he said that because i agree with him myself um i knew i could have done a lot
00:10:15better today but um yeah that's the standard i set myself and so does he so yeah he knows there's
00:10:21more to come from me and hopefully i can get to there it feels um a little bit wrong but we have
00:10:26to accept it this is uh how big games are decided there was in small margins and i think city was
00:10:32better in the inside the boxes yeah and uh we're having 16 to 7 shots at the end but losing three no
00:10:39yeah it's a tough moment but i think the performance today to be honest was was uh better
00:10:43uh than in the cup final and we will come to that palace performance because there was a lot to
00:10:49like about it from from their point of view manchester city had to show real resilience that's what
00:10:54pep guardiola talked about after the game in order to get the win yeah three nil on paper but
00:10:59that certainly doesn't tell the full story man said you really had to earn it today cellars park
00:11:03is such a tough place to go and they had to really sit there to get they went toe-to-toe palace
00:11:08from the off you'll see the press here pino getting their head down sending them back mateta following
00:11:13it up city didn't really have anywhere to go and once they do they turn it over quite easily
00:11:18and then you've got that battle you've got mateta he's occupying diaz sar's going to come in with
00:11:24guardiol ball bobbling around but that's fine premier league palace are a good team you've got to get
00:11:29bodies around you've got to get people putting their bodies on the line making it as difficult
00:11:32as they possibly can now palace had a lot of half chances in the first half here high line from city
00:11:38nunez starting to learn how to play that right back position you can rely on him i think when we
00:11:43watched the game live we thought this was a really good chance but probably would have been ruled out
00:11:46cut for offside so palace's best chance would have been offside so that's not a problem but the
00:11:52point is they kept getting chances through the lines looks up palace are a quality team picks out
00:11:57sartre valio doesn't panic or riley gets himself back in sartre ends up running out of space it's
00:12:02almost a shot cross doesn't really come to anything you see it again wharton getting his head up great
00:12:08line from manchester city again good confidence in it they know they can play that line like i say
00:12:13people like nunez who's not necessarily a defender he's learning how to play in that role and that's
00:12:18the thing when you get these chances but up the other end that's why they dig in that's why they do
00:12:22these defensive duties because they know they've got quality to hurt look at that harland has barely
00:12:27touched the ball it's not a story anymore back peddling back across goal unbelievable finish so
00:12:33important for his team and even ticky tacky loves a bullet header every now and again
00:12:37and then nunez like i say defensively good nicking it getting on that front foot the game wasn't really
00:12:43going anywhere it was very much in the balance and we just heard him talking about phil foden wasn't
00:12:48necessarily as involved as he'd like to be but my goodness me the vein of form he's in at the moment
00:12:53the way he's able to eat from shoot from 22 yards he's a killer and late on in the game like i say
00:12:582-0 palace pushing that is what you want coming off your bench so vinio definitely warmed up didn't he
00:13:0480 yard run as the presence of mind to go around dean henderson earn his team a penalty the rest we don't
00:13:11have to talk about do we look see a celebration he's bored of scoring now scoring scoring is boring for
00:13:17all in harland look on phil foden his numbers have been fantastic over the last few games theo
00:13:23but pep guardiola was critical of his overall performance and said he was he was rushing a bit
00:13:27foden agreed with them this wasn't a wake-up call comment that he was making in the media this is
00:13:32clearly something that they've they've talked about and we saw them at the at the end of the game
00:13:36together yeah it was constructive criticism i felt and he recognizes the standard phil foden brought to
00:13:42the premier last year winning obviously the pfa player of the year that's what he expects and
00:13:46you know we're not savvy to it on the day-to-day basis but he sees what he does but on the match
00:13:50day it's where he really wants to perform and look for us he's playing fantastically well but for pep
00:13:55right now it's not quite the standard what he wants but look if you're still scoring performing well and
00:13:59scoring goals look there's a lot more to come from phoen if that's the case because that's going to be
00:14:02scary for arsenal as well palace don't have a good record against manchester city but on the evidence of
00:14:08of this game there's a lot to back up oliver glasner's claim that this was even better than
00:14:12the the performance in the fa cup final which crystal palace won because they did manage to get
00:14:19through and they did manage to create those those big chances yeah they were excellent like i say and
00:14:23that's that's credit to manchester city's performance today having to go that extra that extra uh note
00:14:29defending really well palace look really good they look really organized this season they're a real threat
00:14:34especially in the first half of games city weathered that storm and then as we talked about that
00:14:39quality harland and voden deadly yeah makes that win all the more impressive from manchester city now
00:14:45aston villa are now firmly in the mix for the title after winning nine of their last 10 premier league
00:14:51games they made the journey to london to face a west ham side who've gone four without a win

00:16:38conza trying to play it out of defense here dispossessed by fernandez and what a perfectly placed shot

00:18:01they are are checking to see whether there may be a possible offside here against duf
00:18:08you can see anthony taylor's position there he says play on
00:18:13ponza's half clearance bowen diverting it past bizot
00:18:19the check has been completed and the goal stands
00:18:24and the west ham captain gets his fifth goal of the season

00:22:19west ham 2-3
00:22:21west ham 2-3
00:22:22west ham 2-2
00:22:24aston villa 3-3
00:22:26Camara, Dinia, Camara, Marlon with the touch, Dinia, pushed away by Arreola and cleared by Potts.
00:22:46Time running out for West Ham if they're to get anything from this afternoon's match.
00:22:51Dinia, Rodgers, faced by Mavropanos, it's Morgan Rodgers right across the face of goal.
00:23:05Aston Villa coming out on top though, West Ham 2, Aston Villa 3.
00:23:11If we're honest, we want to start games quicker and be on the front foot but in the last couple of games I think we started slow
00:23:17and we've had to come back in the game and had to show a fighter determination, a character but each and every player has got that and the manager even more so.
00:23:25How much did you need that goal to make it 2-2 to come when it did, as early as it did in the second half?
00:23:31Yes, of course, we were losing. We needed firstly to keep calm, keep being consistent and demanding in our game plan and through it try to score, try to come back the result like we did and then play personality. I think we did everything.
00:23:51Offensively we were okay but defensively we have to be more aggressive, more individual aspects that we cannot allow players with such much talent like Rodgers to have this space to do their actions.
00:24:08So it requires a big effort from all of us to try and rectify so we can perform the way we are performing and take results because this is really punishing us.
00:24:18I'm just pretty confident right now, obviously scoring a few lately and when I've got the ball and received it I saw they were kind of dropping off a bit and I thought yeah I'm just taking a touch at my feet and just hit it.
00:24:26And I know I've got the quality from distance, I work on that kind of shot and I'm just really happy at winning and I'm grateful that it went in and that will do win the game.
00:24:32Theo, two more goals for Morgan Rodgers, almost a hat-trick for him. That's nine away goals for Aston Villa and all of them have either been to draw them level or to put them in front.
00:24:42He did both today. What did you make of his overall impact on the game?
00:24:46Well we look at, you know, big performances in really important players but his influence right now in this Aston Villa team is really standing out.
00:24:54You can just see the confidence in his play and what I really like is his intent from minute one.
00:25:00He sets the tone on how he's going to perform this whole game and it's just this initial give and go with Tillemans who connected constantly throughout the game.
00:25:08It's just to show that Wan-Bissaka, you're going to have a handful today.
00:25:11This is where we kind of see him at times in the middle of the park but he always likes to operate and move and always keep moving.
00:25:18You always keep your defenders guessing.
00:25:20And he operated a lot on the left-hand side today which we haven't really seen him play too often but it's these little touches here which are clever and already Wan-Bissaka is already concerned about him.
00:25:28And this is what we're talking about, what he's been doing from minute one, the different side of it where he can give it and go and show that other side of him.
00:25:35And at times as a defender it's an absolute handful to deal with and a fantastic cross as well.
00:25:42This is what I like at times, to be a good player you don't have to do too much movement.
00:25:45Messi's lived off that for many, many years but look, he gets his shot away and we've seen those going on another time.
00:25:50But this is his goal. Tillemans, who's been absolutely fantastic today, starts off, he's recognised already the weakness in Wan-Bissaka's game.
00:25:57He recognises it all the time, he finds his space and this is where you're going to get your goals but not just how he finishes it.
00:26:04First touch is fantastic, composed, confident, it's a man who's actually right now playing at his best.
00:26:09This is where we kind of feel Morgan Rodgers drifts into these spaces where he can recognise there's danger.
00:26:15And like you said there, when you give a time and space and the players drop off and they can do this, the technique, we've seen it recently against Spurs.
00:26:24I mean the way it just picks up the pace, the closer it gets to the goalkeeper.
00:26:27And look, I'm not a goalkeeper at times, I'd think maybe you could save it but Joe, you've just got to talk about this strike, the way the goalkeeper sees it late for me.
00:26:34Absolutely fantastic. Yeah Theo, if he talked about mastering that technique and I saw him score a goal against Leeds with that technique and Areola, it ends up being not that far away from him.
00:26:43It's just so unpredictable, it's not a predictable curve or swerve.
00:26:46He sets it with like the top of his ankle with not too much pace and it either dips or rises and that's why you see Areola such an athletic goalkeeper get beat with relative ease.
00:26:56I couldn't do that. But he is something special Morgan Rodgers and it was a really good comeback from Aston Villa.
00:27:03But this is becoming a bit of a habit for West Ham. Nuno talked about this and said, you know, we are really struggling to hold on to a lead.
00:27:11They led twice in this game. How much of a concern or how concerned should they be Joe?
00:27:16Of course they should be concerned. The Premier League is relentless. We know we've seen it in so many games this season.
00:27:21Taking the lead, that's not game over. You know, teams have got so much in their arsenal, so much on the bench coming back.
00:27:26You've got to stay focused for 90 plus minutes. And look, they weren't terrible today, but they were up against a good Villa side who didn't panic when they went behind.
00:27:33Three good goals and another loss.
00:27:36Obviously with a former Arsenal and Manchester City player sitting in the studio, we need to talk about the title race.
00:27:42Are Villa very much in this?
00:27:44I think so. I do. I feel like when you have a very difficult start, you can go two ways as a team, as a squad.
00:27:51But Emery's obviously got that confidence in them. They're playing with some good stuff at this moment in time.
00:27:55So for me, they would be a problem. But yeah, I'm concerned about your lot.
00:27:59Three points between the top three with Aston Villa starting to open up a little bit of a gap now between themselves and Chelsea in fourth, Joe.
00:28:07Yeah, they are. As expected, I think Arsenal and Manchester City up there. But Villa, I think the biggest compliment you can pay them is with a difficult start.
00:28:14They've beaten both Arsenal and Manchester City. They're definitely capable.
00:28:18Whether they can mount a charge is yet to be seen, but Arsenal and City are definitely going to be there at the end.
00:28:23They've got Arsenal again on the 30th of December. That's something to look forward to.
00:28:27Next, we've got the first Premier League Weir-time derby since 2016.
00:28:37One of the theatest and finest rivalries in English football is a man to reduce.
00:28:42I'm on the front page, on the back page, every page of every paper.
00:28:46Bitsley! Brilliant goal!
00:28:48I'm a hero. I'm your saviour.
00:28:50Here it is!
00:28:51It's in!
00:28:52Phillip Sutton at the score!
00:28:53I don't blame you!
00:28:54If you're looking at me, I would be looking at me too!
00:28:58Red and white tonight!
00:28:59It's okay for you to stand while I move!
00:29:02It's Weirside derby day!
00:29:04I don't blame you!
00:29:07Guy Mowbrie was at the Stadium of Light.
00:29:09It's been more than nine long years since the prides of the Weir and the Tyne last came together for a Premier League derby.
00:29:19The return of a special fixture.
00:29:22The Sunderland team shows three changes from last weekend's 3-0 defeat at Manchester City.
00:29:28Reinildo, Shemstein Talby and Brian Broby come in to start.
00:29:32And for Reinildo, Talby, Noah Siddiqui and Bertrand Traore,
00:29:36it's one heck of a game to sign off in before departing for international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations.
00:29:42For Newcastle, two changes from Wednesday's Champions League draw at Leverkusen.
00:29:47Anthony Alanga replaces Harvey Barnes.
00:29:49And with Joe Linton not 100% and on the bench,
00:29:52Lewis Miley comes in, joining Dan Byrne as the only two true locals to start the game.
00:30:00Before kick-off, Sunderland salutes their former player Gary Rowell,
00:30:04who sadly passed away yesterday aged just 68.
00:30:08A Sunderland lad.
00:30:10A hero to a generation.
00:30:12The scorer of their last Derby hat-trick in 1979.
00:30:16He always had incredible timing.
00:30:19In 137 years of meeting, there have been 157 previous matches with Newcastle ahead by just one win.
00:30:37And now they come together with Sunderland ahead by just one point.
00:30:43Ilanga.
00:30:45Up to Voltemada.
00:30:46And Gordon's got loads of room on the left.
00:30:48Voltemada can't find him.
00:30:50Gordon's furious about that.
00:30:52Look at Gordon, the pass is on, but he doesn't get it right.
00:30:57Two who know what it's like to score in one of these games.
00:31:03Jermaine Defoe and Kevin Phillips.
00:31:06Goodness me, there's some goals between those two.
00:31:08I don't think Steve Bauer scored that many.
00:31:10But he keeps good company.
00:31:13Michele, Traore.
00:31:17Here's Brobby.
00:31:19Upended by Malik Chao.
00:31:24And the referee's got the yellow card out, has he?
00:31:28Yes, he has for the first time today.
00:31:30It's Brobby for demanding that there should be a yellow card.
00:31:34Oh, the irony, in a game like this when we expect tackles to fly in,
00:31:41and the first yellow is for doing that.
00:31:43As Alan Shearer reminded me only this morning,
00:31:48it is really important, whether you're red and white or black and white,
00:31:53to play the game, not the occasion.
00:31:56Some can get a little too over-keen.
00:31:59But...
00:32:02Gordon.
00:32:06Michele's won it.
00:32:07Dan Byrne will get the next one,
00:32:08and Michele didn't even attempt to stop himself sliding into him.
00:32:14He's claiming it was pure momentum, but he's got a yellow card,
00:32:17and I don't think there's much argument about it.
00:32:20It is the definition of reckless.
00:32:22He's not getting there first.
00:32:25Now Sunderland try and break, but Brobby didn't get even as far as the halfway line.
00:32:33Tonali.
00:32:35Miley.
00:32:37Oh, has Brobby caught Miley there?
00:32:41Le Fay.
00:32:43Le Fay.
00:32:49Traore.
00:32:52Le Fay.
00:32:53Hall is there to stop the cross.
00:32:55And Brobby involved plenty this half.
00:32:58Got a yellow card for waving an imaginary card of his own,
00:33:01and then that happened not so long ago.
00:33:04A risky thing to do when you're on a yellow.
00:33:07Xhaka.
00:33:10Xhaka's cross.
00:33:14Ballard!
00:33:15Clung himself at it.
00:33:16Couldn't get over the top of it.
00:33:17Faiore takes possession for Sunderland.
00:33:32Faiore delivers.
00:33:36The cross is repelled.
00:33:38Sunderland get a throw.
00:33:40And Kiyeli.
00:33:42Winding up the big one again.
00:33:45Ramsdale stays back.
00:33:49Chao got it away, here's Xhaka.
00:33:52And Kiyeli, that's a good ball,
00:33:56Voltomar has headed it into his own net.
00:33:59Sunderland lead one minute into the second half.
00:34:03By far and away, Nick Voltomar's worst moment in a Newcastle game
00:34:09shirt yet.
00:34:10You don't do that.
00:34:12Not today, not in this game.
00:34:15Wrong goal.
00:34:17Wearside delirium has ensued.
00:34:20It's a wonderful cross from Mokiyeli.
00:34:24Voltomar, though, has bulleted that home as though he was trying to score for Newcastle.
00:34:30Couldn't have done any better with it.
00:34:33Sunderland one, Newcastle United nil.
00:34:37The place has taken off.
00:34:39Voltomar wishes he hadn't.
00:34:41Normally at the Stadium of Light, that scoreboard would say Sunderland one,
00:34:47then the name of the opposing team and their badge nil.
00:34:50Today just visitors.
00:34:52The name is not being uttered.
00:34:55Tremendous levels of Derby Day pettiness.
00:35:07Up towards Isidore, really good ball.
00:35:09Isidore, really good try.
00:35:11And smartly saved by Ramsdale.
00:35:13Oh, he's done well with that, Wilson Isidore.
00:35:19The control and the attempt to finish, just magnificent.
00:35:24Delivermento.
00:35:27Murphy.
00:35:30It's deflected and Wiss has got to it, but not with enough contact.
00:35:34Rufus with a really grateful claim.
00:35:37That's as good as it's been for Newcastle for quite a while.
00:35:44Towering leap from Ranildo.
00:35:46Xhaka.
00:35:47He got something on it.
00:35:49Rufus has then gone down and a free kick's been given to Sunderland.
00:35:52Ranildo wants a word or two with Joe Willock as well.
00:35:55And the referee's in to try and defuse it.
00:35:58It's the first flare-up of Derby Day.
00:36:00And it's going off further up the field as well.
00:36:07Lewis Hall and Wilson Isidore have squared up to one another.
00:36:10Le Fay not far away.
00:36:12Where did that spark from?
00:36:14Told you it was anxious all round.
00:36:18That will do it.
00:36:23Sunderland have had a remarkable return to the Premier League.
00:36:28But never mind what's gone before.
00:36:31This was the one they wanted more than any other.
00:36:37Sunday night usually means early closing.
00:36:39Not here.
00:36:40Not tonight.
00:36:41It'll go on into Monday.
00:36:43It might go on into 2026.
00:36:46Sunderland won.
00:36:47Newcastle United nil.
00:36:50Tell us about the experience of the Derby from your point of view.
00:36:54Noisy.
00:36:55Noisy and good connection with our fans.
00:36:59I think we had the opportunity to score.
00:37:01And after that we stayed composed, calm.
00:37:03Even if the game was tense and tough, tight.
00:37:08But yeah, good maturity and happy for the lads.
00:37:12Huge disappointment for us in terms of result and performance really.
00:37:15I don't think we ever truly got going from an attacking sense.
00:37:18It was a game of real lack of chances for both teams.
00:37:21There wasn't a lot of classical goal mouth action.
00:37:23But we're disappointed with our output and we know we need to do better.
00:37:26You got that photo to keep at the end of the whole team in front of the fans.
00:37:29You weren't here two years ago when Newcastle did that after winning here.
00:37:32So was that something that the players thought about?
00:37:34Whose idea was that?
00:37:35Yeah, I believe that in life everything comes back.
00:37:38And we had some players that played this two or three years ago
00:37:42and the painful was still there from them.
00:37:44So I think it has a little bit to do with respect.
00:37:46Of course, the away team, they win here.
00:37:49You need to give the handshake.
00:37:50But to do a picture in front of our fans in the stadium
00:37:54is not what we will do if we go away.
00:37:57But yeah, this is a little bit of karma and we can do it
00:38:01because we are playing at home with our fans, with our support.
00:38:03They've been amazing all year, but even today.
00:38:06And we take this picture and we're happy.
00:38:10So just for comparison, this is what Newcastle United did in January 2024
00:38:15when they beat Sunderland at the Stadium of Light in the Cup.
00:38:19So Sunderland returned the favour.
00:38:21That and visitors on the scoreboard.
00:38:23Are we here for that level of pettiness?
00:38:25It'll be interesting to see if they get a result in Newcastle
00:38:28if they recreate a picture, wouldn't it?
00:38:29But look, it's a connection with the fans.
00:38:31It's going to be a bit hard when they're all the way up in the stands.
00:38:34Yeah, so true.
00:38:35But look, it's great.
00:38:36It's what it means to them.
00:38:37So it's a great connection to be part of the club.
00:38:39So yeah, fair play to them.
00:38:40Yeah, you've got to have a bit of fun with it, haven't you, Joe?
00:38:42Yeah, of course.
00:38:43And Newcastle deserved their win just like Sunderland deserved their win.
00:38:46However you want to celebrate is up to you.
00:38:48But you know, obviously it touched a nerve with a few of them.
00:38:50Yeah, and the way Sunderland approached the game,
00:38:52this was not a match that had a lot of goal-mouth action.
00:38:55No.
00:38:56However, the application can't be faulted.
00:38:58Oh my goodness me.
00:38:59When you look at that starting line-up,
00:39:00you're obviously not seeing any locals born in the city of Sunderland.
00:39:03But jeez, they represented like they were born in Sunderland today.
00:39:06It was an incredible effort.
00:39:08The tenacity, it was an absolutely brilliant game
00:39:10if you look for an old-school English derby.
00:39:12From the off, Broby setting the tone,
00:39:14but they didn't just press recklessly,
00:39:16they pressed really intelligently.
00:39:18They kept setting little traps for Newcastle,
00:39:20shutting them down,
00:39:21and then here we see Volta Marder.
00:39:23That is Newcastle's main man, absolutely no doubt about it.
00:39:26And if you want a stadium to erupt, bang, Ballard in,
00:39:29turns the big man over and they're on the front foot again.
00:39:32But as I say, it wasn't reckless.
00:39:34They were pressing on the front foot,
00:39:36sending Newcastle down little angles and little avenues
00:39:39that they didn't want to be,
00:39:41which allowed Sunderland to get on the front foot.
00:39:43They were able to push them back.
00:39:45They looked a little bit like they'd run out of ideas eventually.
00:39:48Pushing them on.
00:39:49Dan Byrne put under a lot of pressure here,
00:39:51down a blind alley.
00:39:52And this is what the stadium loves.
00:39:54If you're not creating goal-mouth chances,
00:39:56you want to see your team on the front foot,
00:39:58pushing your opposition back.
00:39:59And ultimately, it's an easy turnover
00:40:01when Ramsdale has to go long.
00:40:03This is Ballard threatening both boxes.
00:40:08This was one of the only real chances.
00:40:10Look, it wasn't too many chances in this game.
00:40:13But this is straight away in the second half.
00:40:15Look, you get a lot of chances from throw-ins,
00:40:17of course you do,
00:40:18but Sunderland have identified
00:40:19that it would be a weak header
00:40:20if it is a header away from goal.
00:40:22Xhaka, such an intelligent player.
00:40:24Mukiele, really good ball in.
00:40:26Volta Marder will not want to see that again.
00:40:28He's had such a great start in Newcastle's shirt
00:40:30and you feel for him,
00:40:31but that's not a good moment for the big man.
00:40:34But a little bit of in-house game.
00:40:36You know, you see Gordon's finally got his chance
00:40:38to open his legs.
00:40:40Nailed.
00:40:41And this is Xhaka.
00:40:42We talk about him.
00:40:43Such an experienced pro.
00:40:44This is the 93rd minute.
00:40:46He takes one here.
00:40:47He takes one for the team.
00:40:48He realises he's not going to get a foul for it.
00:40:50You've got to get up.
00:40:51You've got to get up.
00:40:5293rd minute.
00:40:53All hands to the pump.
00:40:54A little bit of Xhaka.
00:40:55Yeah.
00:40:56We've all seen that before.
00:40:57And as Roos gets nailed,
00:40:58it all bedlam breaks loose.
00:41:00But I'm telling you now,
00:41:01walking off the field as a centre mid with blood dripping from your eye
00:41:04and a 1-0 win.
00:41:05That is a great feeling.
00:41:06Yeah.
00:41:07If he wasn't a hero before then,
00:41:08he's going to be a hero after that.
00:41:09Look, in terms of the intensity from Sunderland,
00:41:12there will be people,
00:41:13Anthony Gordon amongst them,
00:41:14as we saw Dan Byrne who had to go to hospital
00:41:16and have his ribs x-rayed.
00:41:18He had problems with breathing after that challenge
00:41:20from Mukiele in the game.
00:41:23At times,
00:41:24did it threaten to boil over, do you think?
00:41:26A little bit,
00:41:27but I think they were good on his tackles.
00:41:28Obviously, the Dan Byrne one isn't great on the eye,
00:41:31but I think he'll appreciate that.
00:41:33The big man.
00:41:34He's a big fair player.
00:41:35We don't want to see anyone get hurt,
00:41:36but the intensity was incredible today.
00:41:38The other thing that Sunderland fans will be delighted about
00:41:40is that now they've overtaken Newcastle
00:41:43in terms of wins in this fixture.
00:41:45It was level coming into this one,
00:41:4729 games,
00:41:48and now Sunderland have 10 wins in the Premier League.
00:41:52And that's just one of those things in a derby situation
00:41:55that feels good, Theo.
00:41:57And as well,
00:41:58it's a great feeling at the whole club at this moment in time.
00:42:00They're here to stay, aren't they?
00:42:03Sunderland, I feel.
00:42:04You can kind of feel the whole connection to the club,
00:42:06but look, they are in a good moment and they continue to be like that.
00:42:09Yeah, they've got themselves in a really good position.
00:42:11Now, with three wins in five Premier League games,
00:42:14Sean Dyche has steadied the ship since taking over at Nottingham Forest.
00:42:18Today, they hosted a Spurs side who've won more matches away than at home.
00:42:22Your commentator is Martin Fisher.
00:42:26Forrest make three changes to the side beaten at Everton,
00:42:29including a Premier League debut for Brazilian keeper John Victor.
00:42:33Matt Sells ruled out with a groin injury.
00:42:35Murillo is back in defence.
00:42:37Callum Hudson-Odoi preferred to Danone-Odoi on the wing.
00:42:42Spurs named the same eleven that beat Brentford last Saturday.
00:42:46Only Benton Coor and Kolo Mawani didn't start their Champions League win
00:42:50over Slavia Prague on Tuesday.
00:42:52Dutchman Xavi Simmonds scored in both of those victories.
00:42:56Forrest have struggled to pick up Premier League points
00:43:02after their European travels this season.
00:43:05Losing four of their five games after being in action on a Thursday night.
00:43:10Just the one defeat for Tottenham after their Champions League exploits.
00:43:15Hutchinson, who's been a bright spark off the bench in recent weeks,
00:43:20feeding Savona to cross.
00:43:22Sangare's header against the post.
00:43:24And as far as Igor Jesus, in goes Williams.
00:43:27Chance is still there!
00:43:28Great save by Vacario.
00:43:30And then the flag up against Savona, far side.
00:43:34Well, after such a lethargic start by both teams, it bursts into action.
00:43:42Good overlap here by Savona, who was onside.
00:43:46And when it came into the middle, it's a bullet header from Sangare.
00:43:50And then Williams was on target with his effort.
00:43:53Vacario stopped it.
00:43:55And then up goes the flag.
00:43:57Thomas Frank unbeaten in his last four visits to the city ground.
00:44:02Winning two of them, including a 2-0 success back in May.
00:44:06Milenkovich is up there.
00:44:08Here he is!
00:44:09Should have done better!
00:44:11Well, he'd been up for a minute or so, waiting for a delivery like that from Nico Williams.
00:44:23Gray, pocket pinch by Sangare!
00:44:28And it's in by Hudson-Odoi!
00:44:30What a gift for Nottingham Forest!
00:44:35Archie Gray accepts his responsibility.
00:44:39And the Forest fans and the Forest players cannot believe their good fortune.
00:44:46Always a possibility when you try to play the ball out from the back.
00:44:53Tottenham have been doing this all afternoon.
00:44:56This time it's Gray rather than Bentancur who comes to collect.
00:44:59To knock it left to Van der Ven.
00:45:01Turn the other way.
00:45:02Sangare read it perfectly.
00:45:04And then unselfishly, as he was quickly closed down by Vacario,
00:45:09put it on a plate for Callum Hudson-Odoi.
00:45:12Spurs seem to have woken up at last.
00:45:19Kolo Mouane.
00:45:21Spence.
00:45:24Poor cross.
00:45:25Gray to hit it!
00:45:27Good save by John down to his right.
00:45:30Well, that would have been sweet, sweet redemption for young Archie Gray.
00:45:35Spence with the approach.
00:45:37And on the swivel, that's a good hit.
00:45:40John does well to keep it out.
00:45:43Oh, it's danger from Pedro Poro.
00:45:45Straight to Hutchinson.
00:45:47Spence recovered well, and Gray takes over.
00:45:52Finding Kudos.
00:45:53Steps inside Williams.
00:45:56Hudson-Odoi got back at him.
00:45:58If there is a criticism of Kudos,
00:46:00it is that sometimes he just holds onto the ball a fraction too long.
00:46:03At the other end it's Hutchinson.
00:46:06Igor Jesus.
00:46:07Gibbs-White is up there, waiting!
00:46:09And very nearly stretched to make it two.
00:46:12Excellent work from Igor Jesus.
00:46:16And Gibbs-White just held his run here.
00:46:19Knew that he was in danger of straying into an offside position.
00:46:22Held it, held it, and then attacked and couldn't quite get there.
00:46:25Sangare getting the neck muscles working to ensure that header reached Hudson-Odoi.
00:46:38Twisting Benton Kerr this way and that.
00:46:40Great ball!
00:46:41Oh, it's better than that!
00:46:42It's a magnificent goal!
00:46:44Callum Hudson-Odoi, his second of the game.
00:46:48And Vicario is beaten for a second time today.
00:46:54And Hudson-Odoi, who was gifted the first,
00:46:58brings brilliance to this occasion to get his second.
00:47:04Did he intend it?
00:47:06Well, we'll find out later, I'm sure.
00:47:10And Spurs, who have been so ordinary since we started,
00:47:15now have an even bigger mountain to climb.
00:47:22Anderson, look at the space for Hudson-Odoi.
00:47:25On for Igor Jesus.
00:47:28Oh, he's gone for goal!
00:47:30And it whistles just wide in Vicario's far post.
00:47:35Only got his first Premier League goal in the recent away win at Wolves,
00:47:38but in all competitions the Brazilian is on seven now.
00:47:43Sean Dyches continues to pick up welcome Premier League points.
00:47:51Murillo, lovely ball, Anderson.
00:47:58Hudson-Odoi wants it to his left.
00:48:01What a dissimilar situation in the position to where he scored his second.
00:48:05It's Sangari who... bless!
00:48:07Oh!
00:48:08What a hit from Sangari!
00:48:11And that is his farewell gift to his teammates
00:48:15and the supporters of Forrest as he heads to the AFCON
00:48:20with Senegal.
00:48:22That's the final nail for Tottenham, that's for sure.
00:48:28What a strike!
00:48:29And Sangari, who hadn't scored at all for Forrest in two and a bit seasons
00:48:35since the victory here over Leeds last month,
00:48:39has now scored two in five weeks.
00:48:43Three-nil would be Forrest's best win over Tottenham since 1987.
00:48:56In goes Douglas-Louise, his first involvement is a good one.
00:48:59Gibbs-White feeding Hudson-Odoi.
00:49:02Anderson just taking up a good position on the edge.
00:49:05Pattered into as he released that free-kick in a very inviting position here for Nottingham Forrest.
00:49:14They look like a team who just want to get off the pitch right now and get the plane home.
00:49:20Gib-White attacks it.
00:49:25Vicario away, Hutchinson with the reef bound.
00:49:32Well, the pressure had eased slightly on Thomas Frank,
00:49:36but this defeat and this performance in particular will just bring that all to the fore again.
00:49:43Another disappointing day for them in the Premier League.
00:49:48Nottingham Forrest three, Tottenham Hotspur nil.
00:49:52There's bound to be pressure on you again now.
00:49:55How do you respond to that?
00:49:57No, I think there's pressure on all of us, every game.
00:50:00We need to perform, there's no doubt about that.
00:50:03I'm pretty sure it's not a one-man band.
00:50:05It would be very bad if it is.
00:50:07It was only on me, only on the players, only on the staff.
00:50:10It's all of us together and we will bounce back, I have no doubt of that.
00:50:14I thought the football today was a really good mix of our shape and our basics
00:50:17and the pressing lines and all them good things that you do off the ball,
00:50:20but also with the ball.
00:50:21We know we've got talent, but the glue that holds the performance together
00:50:24is the work ethic and the shape of the team, in my opinion.
00:50:26So I like them to work and I thought that was on show absolutely tonight
00:50:29and I was really pleased for them.
00:50:30The second goal, I'm not sure whether I should describe it as a worldie or a flute.
00:50:34Where would you put it?
00:50:35I'd say it's a shot cross.
00:50:37I think it's a mix of both.
00:50:39I think if the keeper doesn't come out, he gets it.
00:50:41If he comes out, that's what happens.
00:50:43So, yeah, I'm buzzing with that going in.
00:50:45I said it's a top performance and that.
00:50:46From them, it's credit to the team for the way they played
00:50:48and it helped me get the goals.
00:50:49When you've got two and there's the best part of 25 minutes to go,
00:50:53are you telling your mates to give you the ball at every opportunity?
00:50:55I was telling every one of them to pass it.
00:50:57I was like, listen, play it this side, play it this side.
00:50:59But now, sometimes you just get a two and I'm happy with that today.
00:51:02So, yeah, I'm delighted with the performance and as I said,
00:51:04happy with my goals, happy to help the team as much as possible,
00:51:06but credit to them as well.
00:51:08Happy with both of the goals, happy with the results.
00:51:11Sean Dyche happy with the balance of everything that he was looking for,
00:51:14from the hard work to the balance of play to their defensive duties.
00:51:18But I want to ask you in particular about their attacking prowess
00:51:21and the skill they have in going forward.
00:51:24Who's allowed that to happen is an axer setter, Sean Dyche.
00:51:27He's a man, management, the way he manages players, sorry.
00:51:31He plays the players' strengths and these five, four, should we just say,
00:51:36look, all stood out today massively.
00:51:38You can see here highlighted Hudson-Odoi, Jesus, Hutchison and Gibbs-White
00:51:43keeping the width.
00:51:44And this is the first chance early on with Sangari making a late run,
00:51:50which he's going to be missed in the AFCON, but look, that's what they're going to miss,
00:51:54his energy from midfield.
00:51:56And this is where the goal comes from.
00:51:58It's not a great press, however, he recognises the players.
00:52:02It's quite not lazy, but look, it's not great for Marjorie Gray,
00:52:06but Sangari, he smells danger.
00:52:09Sets up on a plate for Hudson-Odoi, tucks it away quite nicely.
00:52:12But this is the other side as well, Hudson-Odoi, for me, stands out.
00:52:16The work rate that Sean Dyche was talking about,
00:52:18which now access this freedom and this directness
00:52:21and for these players to finally actually be able to play with that freedom
00:52:25I spoke about early on.
00:52:28A bit of a half chance, I'd say.
00:52:30Maybe if he was on his toes, he might have got a tap in there,
00:52:32but look, it's the bright habits, they're getting numbers forward.
00:52:35Picking up spaces, they all complement each other really well,
00:52:38always keeping on the move.
00:52:39Look at the amount of numbers.
00:52:40We're talking about Sean Dyche teams maybe being defensive.
00:52:42Look, they've got five, six bodies in there.
00:52:44Half chance maybe could have been the second one there.
00:52:49Sangari, like I said before, he's going to be missed with these runs,
00:52:52but just to distract Archie Gray to access that space.
00:52:55And Hudson-Odoi, when you give him a one-on-one situation,
00:52:57he says about a shot crossed.
00:52:59Who cares? Who cares?
00:53:01Quite frankly, it's fantastic.
00:53:02And this is what I'm talking about, the complement each other,
00:53:04the freedom and the excitement and the confidence
00:53:07they're now playing with.
00:53:10At times, they're making Tottenham run after shadows.
00:53:13They really are.
00:53:15And just the way you see the players just occupy the centre-last,
00:53:19allow that space for Sangari and just watch this outside the book.
00:53:23Fantastic finish.
00:53:25And Sean Dyche will be really happy the way he's started his career
00:53:28at Nottingham Forest right now. They've been brilliant.
00:53:29And like you said, really noticeable the number of bodies
00:53:31that were able to get forward and were allowed to get forward
00:53:34for Nottingham Forest.
00:53:36But it's another defeat for Tottenham.
00:53:38They seem to have sorted out their home form
00:53:40and now their away form is suffering.
00:53:42But they seem like they're only ever one game away
00:53:44from an enormous amount of pressure being put on Thomas Frank.
00:53:47And he seems to accept that that's the situation as Spurs manager.
00:53:51Do you think his position is precarious every time they put in a bad performance,
00:53:57every time they drop points?
00:53:59I think it's just the manner of defeat that they've struggled.
00:54:02When they have lost, they've been really poor.
00:54:04You look at the Arsenal game, you look at the Chelsea game,
00:54:07here today, they've got quality in them.
00:54:09They've got good performances.
00:54:11They're doing well in Europe.
00:54:12They've got good numbers in Europe.
00:54:13And when they play well, for example,
00:54:15they beat Brentford with a fantastic performance.
00:54:17But when they lose, they lose badly.
00:54:19And we all know that when you're at the top,
00:54:22a team like Tottenham is going to be pressure.
00:54:24They are one point worse off at this stage of the season
00:54:26than they were last season.
00:54:28They got 22 points.
00:54:29They had 23 at this stage last season.
00:54:32Now, only the Premier League's top three
00:54:34have won more points at home than Brentford this season.
00:54:37Today's visitors were Leeds,
00:54:39who've only won once on the road.
00:54:41Your commentator is Mark Scott.
00:54:44The loss at Spurs made it back-to-back.
00:54:47Brentford defeats for the first time since Keith Andrews took over.
00:54:51But both of those setbacks were on the road.
00:54:54They have been a very different beast here this season.
00:54:58The Bees are four different from the team that started the tame loss at Tottenham.
00:55:02Hickey, Jensen, Janelt and Lewis Potter are in for Aja, Yarmuluk, Damsgaard
00:55:07and the suspended Shada.
00:55:09Al Tanaka's reward for his injury-type equaliser from the bench against Liverpool
00:55:14is a place in the Leeds starting line-up today as Ilya Gruev makes way.
00:55:19While only three teams have a better home record than Brentford,
00:55:23only Wolves have a worse away one than Leeds in the Premier League this season.
00:55:28Okafor trying to prod it through for Calvert-Lewin.
00:55:32It might come for Okafor anyway.
00:55:34Angles against him.
00:55:35Kelleher has to make the save.
00:55:37Slack stuff from Brentford,
00:55:39which very nearly resulted in the opening goal of the game.
00:55:43And it was an inadvertent touch backwards from Vitaly Janelt
00:55:47that gave Okafor the chance to surge through on goal.
00:55:50But it was too tight an angle for him to truly test Kelleher.
00:55:56Coyote.
00:55:59Got away from Stack nicely.
00:56:01Coyote.
00:56:04Jensen.
00:56:08Still Jensen.
00:56:10And it's a penalty kick.
00:56:14I was about to say he appeared to take a tumble a bit too easily.
00:56:18But John Brooks has given the penalty.
00:56:25They will have to check whether he was onside in the first place anyway,
00:56:30Dongo Wattara.
00:56:31And then they'll get to checking how much contact there was
00:56:36between Gumansson and Wattara.
00:56:38And I have to say that looks soft.
00:56:42Well, it's not going to be a penalty kick.
00:56:45Not because they've deemed that John Brooks made the wrong call,
00:56:50but because Dongo Wattara is in an offside position.
00:56:58Strauch.
00:56:59Oh, he's given that away.
00:57:00Hickey.
00:57:01Henderson.
00:57:02Lovely poke through here for Lewis Potter.
00:57:04Beaten away by Perry.
00:57:06And Pascal Strauch is the most relieved man inside the ground.
00:57:15Awful pass.
00:57:18Jordan Henderson with a beautiful ball that gave Lewis Potter the chance.
00:57:22He hit it a bit too close to Lucas Perry, really.
00:57:25And Padua.
00:57:26Calvert-Lewin.
00:57:27Tanaka.
00:57:28Oh!
00:57:29Okafor over the bar.
00:57:30Al Tanaka really stretched well to get his head to it.
00:57:32He was aiming for Noah Okafor, but what an awful attempt that was from the Swiss.
00:57:38He forwards by Ampadu.
00:57:39Coyote underneath it.
00:57:40Stacks in there.
00:57:41And now it's Calvert-Lewin.
00:57:42He's gone over and the hit comes in.
00:57:43And it was, uh, somewhat hard.
00:57:44Oh!
00:57:45Oh!
00:57:46Oh!
00:57:47Oh!
00:57:48Oh!
00:57:49Oh!
00:57:50Oh!
00:57:51Oh!
00:57:52Oh!
00:57:53Oh!
00:57:54Oh!
00:57:55Oh!
00:57:56Oh!
00:57:57Oh!
00:57:58Oh!
00:57:59Oh!
00:58:00Oh!
00:58:01Oh!
00:58:02Oh!
00:58:03Oh!
00:58:04Oh!
00:58:05And the hit comes in, and it was, uh, somewhat hopeful from the away fans.
00:58:11Hmm, bit of a drag from Collins, but they've, uh, checked and cleared it.
00:58:18Well, they've got a good spot, but they have not had much to actually spot.
00:58:25Brentford have never gone three Premier League games in a row without scoring, but that could
00:58:31change today.
00:58:33Slotted through here for Rico Henry, Henry's ball, Henderson!
00:58:42Jordan Henderson with his first Brentford goal, and what a big one it could be too.
00:58:51In a game, low on chances, Jordan Henderson has snaffled this one.
00:58:58Henry's onside, Leeds switched off, and the cutback got a deflection, which teed it up perfectly for Henderson.
00:59:07And he smashed home beyond Lucas Perry to make it Brentford one, Leeds nil.
00:59:16With Leeds throwing caution to the wind, finally, there's a bit of zip to the game, slapped away by Vandenberg.
00:59:28It's Ampadu with the arrow into the area, which isn't dealt with, Kelleher with a terrific save.
00:59:39When it bounced down here for Okafor and Aronson, they both went for it, and it needed dealing with from Quivine Kelleher.
00:59:49Eton Ampadu, Willy Nonto, Ampadu, a bit of room here for Ampadu, he has kept the ball for Leeds.
01:00:01Nonto, inviting Calvert-Lewin, 1-1, Dominic Calvert-Lewin at it again for Leeds.
01:00:09That's four games in a row that he's scored in now, and credit to Leeds for their response since falling behind.
01:00:20They will feel that is a deserved leveller from the head of Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
01:00:28Ampadu poked it wide to Nonto, who lifted it in beautifully.
01:00:33And that is meat and drink to Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
01:00:39First time he's scored in four straight Premier League games since 2020, and Leeds are levelled.
01:00:49Goodmanson.
01:00:51Leeds buoyed by that goal.
01:00:54Fancy they can go on and nick it.
01:00:55Goodmanson.
01:00:56Goodmanson.
01:00:58Ampadu.
01:01:00Ampadu!
01:01:03Whistle not far wide of Kelleher's post.
01:01:07That would have been some way to mark a century of Leeds games for the Leeds captain.
01:01:14Well, Bogle giving it to Damsgaard, and over the top from Dongo Muttara.
01:01:20Would have been quite a parting gift from the Burkina Faso international, who's heading off to the Africa Cup of Nations soon.
01:01:31Not had much to shout about on their travels this season.
01:01:35But given Brentford's form here at the GTEC, this would be a pretty decent result for them.
01:01:41I think the table probably doesn't lie.
01:01:44We faced a Leeds team that had a different prospect than what they were maybe three weeks ago.
01:01:50The results of that.
01:01:52Against big teams, the performance levels within that, they've deserved them.
01:01:55Knew it was going to be very difficult.
01:01:57They've changed the system and they've changed the way they've played in recent weeks, and it's difficult to play against.
01:02:01So we were always very respectful of that.
01:02:03We dealt with it in the main today, but I probably thought it was in the round of a fair result.
01:02:06We are the first side since ages who have won your point.
01:02:09They have beaten all the top teams.
01:02:10And then not just the point, but also the manner we played today.
01:02:14And also that we are so brave to play on the front foot and even to go in behind.
01:02:19So, yeah, we can take lots of confidence out of this game and definitely also a valuable point.
01:02:24I'm guessing it is Jordan's goal.
01:02:26It got a deflection on its way through, but that will be his first for Brentford since he joined.
01:02:31And that's the sort of goal that you expect him to score, arriving late and getting on the end of it.
01:02:35Yeah, he's played a slightly different role today, maybe a bit more advanced at the time with Vitaly playing a little bit deeper.
01:02:40I gave him the opportunity to get forward more and, yeah, finished it reasonably well with the help of a little nick.
01:02:47Well, Jordan, first of all, is it your goal?
01:02:49You tell me, I hope so.
01:02:50Well, it looked like it was sort of on target, then it got a deflection on its way through.
01:02:54It's coming in anyway, I think.
01:02:56I was a bit further forward and as soon as the ball was played in behind, I just tried to make the box.
01:03:01And thankfully, the ball sat up nicely and then I just tried to guide it towards the goal and thankfully it went in.
01:03:06I'll be disappointed that we've conceded the goal, which is why there'll be a bit of frustration we haven't won the game.
01:03:11They have awarded the goal to Jordan Henderson.
01:03:13I don't think they're going to change it now.
01:03:15And it was a really important goal for him.
01:03:18It put Brentford 1-0 up in the game.
01:03:20But overall, in terms of his performance, we're now starting to talk about him as part of the England squad again.
01:03:26But has the tone of that and the focus of that conversation changed a bit, Joe?
01:03:31Oh, the tone's totally changed and there's only one reason for that and that is that Jordan Henderson is a top player and a top pro.
01:03:38He obviously went on his journey to Saudi, ended up at Ajax.
01:03:41They didn't win the league.
01:03:42Everyone's thinking Jordan Henderson's finished.
01:03:44He's getting picked in England squads.
01:03:46Is he there to cheerlead?
01:03:47Is he there to set the standard?
01:03:48Absolutely not.
01:03:50We talk about Granit Xhaka as an incredible sign of the Sunderland.
01:03:53Jordan Henderson is exactly the same for Brentford, who suffered a lot this summer, losing, you know, strikers and their manager.
01:03:59He talked about he's playing in that more forward role today.
01:04:03He's just a brilliant footballer with great energy, such high standards.
01:04:06I played with a young Jordan Henderson.
01:04:08Really, really good tenacity about him and a great energy.
01:04:12But the experience that he brings as well as the quality, he's a top player and I think he's really driving this Brentford team.
01:04:18He's got lovely touches.
01:04:20I think the forward players are learning how to play with him, understanding his quality, setting them up on the front foot.
01:04:26He was involved in anything that was good today.
01:04:28Look, today was not a brilliant game of football, but Jordan Henderson is a top player.
01:04:32He's played in many tight games before.
01:04:35As I say, here he's occupying a little number ten role, something that he's probably enjoying.
01:04:39You know, we're used to him playing in the six, arriving late.
01:04:43And Lachie said he just wanted to knock it towards the goal.
01:04:46You tell me.
01:04:47Just about going towards the target, isn't it?
01:04:51Of course, and then he paid tribute to his late friend, Diego Jota.
01:04:55It was a special moment for him today.
01:04:56It was lovely.
01:04:57Yeah, a really lovely moment for Jordan Henderson.
01:04:59He talked beautifully about it afterwards as well.
01:05:02From the point of view of Leeds United, they've got Dominic Calvert-Lewin on really good form.
01:05:06Having only scored once in his first ten league appearances, he's now scored in each of his last four.
01:05:11And it's gone incredibly well for Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
01:05:15This run of scoring in four consecutive games is the second best of his career.
01:05:19He's only managed five before that.
01:05:21What have you made of this change of form for him, Theo?
01:05:24Well, as well, the goals he scored recently against Man City, of course, he just needs to stay fit.
01:05:29And if he can stay fit, look after himself, he's matured as a player, as a person,
01:05:37that's the best opportunity they're going to get to stay in this league.
01:05:40And as well, he's going to, yeah, brilliant scoring against the top teams,
01:05:43but it's the, you know, the teams around them where it's going to be.
01:05:46But this is where I love to play him with him.
01:05:49When you just put it into a space, don't overthink it.
01:05:51When you have a player that stature up front, and it's another option that England have
01:05:55if no one's actually performing well like Harry Kane.
01:05:57So, look, I wouldn't shy away from him at all because he's brilliant if he can stay fit.
01:06:01Very England-lite on that conversation.
01:06:03Now, some things to look out for across the BBC.

01:07:00It really is Christmas now.
01:07:02Here are all the goals from yesterday.
01:07:08Jones only half won the ball there, though.
01:07:12Minta took a bit of a lash at it.
01:07:14Gomez back into the box.
01:07:15Eketika!
01:07:16Liverpool take the lead in seconds.
01:07:2248 of them.
01:07:27Salah will now take the corner.
01:07:29And his chanter's back in fashion.
01:07:32Salah in by Broeke.
01:07:33Can't get to it!
01:07:35Eketika got to it.
01:07:37The freest of free headers.
01:07:40Liverpool now have a position of control.
01:07:46That's a good ball!
01:07:501-0!
01:07:51That's the kind of football you expect from Chelsea.
01:07:55That's the kind of football and finish you expect from Cole Palmer.
01:08:00Gusto for Chelsea.
01:08:04Pedro Neto.
01:08:06Outside of Mikhelenko's done really well!
01:08:08And in stoppage time at the end of the first half, he tucks them into a two-goal lead.
01:08:18Burnley have everybody back.
01:08:20Harry Wilson to deliver.
01:08:21Went for the one at the near post!
01:08:24And it found its way through.
01:08:26Of Emile Smithrow.
01:08:28It's awful from Hartford.
01:08:33Cullen has options.
01:08:34Who gets up?
01:08:35Who is one?
01:08:35And Burnley are level!
01:08:39His third goal of the season.
01:08:41Excellent first touch.
01:08:42And the second one.
01:08:44Nice and cool.
01:08:45Into the back of the net.
01:08:50Floated in by Wilson.
01:08:53Out as far as Robinson.
01:08:55That's aimed back towards Harry Wilson.
01:08:57Lovely take.
01:08:59Onesata beautifully.
01:09:01And Calvin Bassi couldn't miss.
01:09:04And there are five Burnley players inside the six-yard box.
01:09:09And none of them close enough to the eventual goal scorer.
01:09:16Chuck Wasey with Robinson on the overlap.
01:09:18Now, Chuck Wasey instead trying to find Harry Wilson!
01:09:23Clinical from the Welsh International.
01:09:25And that's a finish of a man full of confidence.
01:09:33Now Anthony.
01:09:37Bassi got an important touch!
01:09:40And so too did Oliver Son!
01:09:42Who has given them hope with less than five minutes of the 90 to go?
01:09:51Saliba's tight on the goalkeeper.
01:09:53It's bending in!
01:09:54It's got it!
01:09:55All the way from the corner!
01:09:57The deadlock is finally broken!
01:09:59I don't think many people could have seen that coming.
01:10:03Almatéz Mano, the young man.
01:10:06It's in!
01:10:08Wolves have equalised!
01:10:09What a moment for them!
01:10:12Harukadari deflects it in!
01:10:17Saka gets the cross in.
01:10:19It's in!
01:10:24Oh, it's come off Muscara.
01:10:26It's an own goal.
01:10:28Well, what an end to the game.
01:10:29Only one more game to go then in this round of matches, at the end of which the players who play are going to play in Africa Cup of Nations will be leaving to represent their countries.
01:10:41Who do you think is going to be most affected by this, Joe?
01:10:46Well, look, we're going to see big numbers at Sunderland.
01:10:48Obviously, they've created that real harmony in the squad.
01:10:51They've got a great atmosphere.
01:10:52That's going to hurt them.
01:10:53No getting away from it.
01:10:53They'll feel like they're in a good enough spot to deal with it.
01:10:56But that's a lot of players.
01:10:57I think in a few positions, they've lost both of their options at the back.
01:11:02It's tough, but it's something that they'll have planned for in the summer, so I'm sure they'll be ready.
01:11:06Yeah, all the clubs know that this is going to happen.
01:11:08It's not taking them by surprise.
01:11:09But who else is standing out for you, Theo?
01:11:11For me, when you look at Manchester United and Bwema, who have spent a lot of money on him and how he's been influencing games.
01:11:17And if United are going to want to climb at a table, he's really important to them.
01:11:20And, of course, Everton losing two main players in the game and then die, who are really big factors right now.
01:11:25So they would be the big ones for me.
01:11:27It could be a difficult time for Fulham as well, Joe.
01:11:30Yeah, the three names, they really jump off the page.
01:11:33I think especially Iwobi and Bassi.
01:11:35Bassi's been incredible since he signed for my ex.
01:11:38Iwobi's just really come into form.
01:11:39You know what a top player is.
01:11:42Traquese, he looks really exciting at the moment.
01:11:45Exciting when he came on against Manchester City.
01:11:48But, you know, it's an important tournament.
01:11:50And, like I say, all these clubs knew it was coming and they had a plan for it.
01:11:52Yeah, really difficult, as you say, for Manchester United losing their right-hand side as it stands.
01:11:58But for Everton as well, with Gane and Diye, and you mentioned them earlier, Theo.
01:12:03Is that creative spark going to cost Everton over that period or that loss of creative spark?
01:12:09I think when you've got a player like McNeil who hasn't played a lot of football as well, it's an opportunity for him to really...
01:12:13That's what I think about.
01:12:14It's an opportunity for players to actually stand up and think, don't forget about me.
01:12:17So, look, I think they'll be missed, but there's some players that can come in and maybe do a job as well.
01:12:21But, look, Arsenal have none, which is always nice to see.
01:12:24Yeah, none for Arsenal, none for Aston Villa as well in terms of their title contenders.
01:12:29Manchester City lose eight Nori and Marmouj.
01:12:32And apparently Liverpool lose Mohamed Salah as well.
01:12:34He's going off to represent Egypt.
01:12:35There's been nothing said about that over the past couple of weeks.
01:12:38And that's quite an interesting one because in some ways that might just settle things down a little bit with Salah off at the Africa Cup of Nations,
01:12:48representing Egypt, where he is desperate to get his hands on that trophy, where Egypt are the most successful team and yet have never won it with Salah.
01:12:56Yeah, of course.
01:12:57And, you know, that was obviously difficult last week, turbulent week, but it seems like they sorted it, resolved it.
01:13:02He got his minutes yesterday and he goes away with everyone's best wishes.
01:13:05Let's take a look at the table then.
01:13:08Manchester City's win means that the gap at the top is once again two points.
01:13:12Third place, Aston Villa are a point further back.
01:13:15Crystal Palace have missed the chance to go fourth and Sunderland are in seventh.
01:13:19West Ham still in the relegation zone.
01:13:21Leeds are now three points above them.
01:13:23Nottingham Forest's win means they're five points clear of trouble.
01:13:28Thank you very much to Joe and to Theo.
01:13:30Manchester City and Villa keep up their title fight right into the festive period.
01:13:34And on the west side, it was Jingle All, Howie.
