Afghanistan is facing a deepening hunger crisis, with millions of people struggling to survive as winter sets in and aid funding falls dramatically short, the United Nations has warned. According to the World Food Program (WFP), forced returns of Afghan refugees, severe drought, and reduced food assistance have left 17 million people at risk of malnutrition and starvation.

Children are among the most vulnerable, with clinics reporting soaring cases of severe malnutrition. Mothers like Saleha in Kabul say they cannot afford heating or stoves, and food is barely enough to survive. WFP workers continue to distribute aid, including food and nutrition support, but resources are insufficient to meet the growing demand.

The UN has called for urgent international support to prevent widespread suffering and deaths. The crisis highlights the compounded impact of conflict, climate, and economic instability on Afghanistan’s population, as humanitarian agencies struggle to reach remote areas in time.
